Inside Broken Hearts, West Loop’s Reborn Dive Bar, Now Open | Eater Chicago

"Heisler Hospitality — the Chicago company behind Sportsman’s Club, Estereo, and Queen Mary — has long mixed corner-tavern domestic cans with deep cocktail programs and shown mastery in catering to diverse crowds. After the surprising closure earlier this year of Nights & Weekends (which opened in November 2021) because the bar was dead during the week and weekend patrons wanted more of a dance-party vibe, Heisler’s director of operations Jeff Donahue explained, “We don’t do nightclubs, that’s not our bread and butter.” On Friday, December 6, Heisler opened a new West Loop spot at 1009 W. Lake Street with a more rustic feel: exposed brick and weathered wood, the bar relocated from the center of the space, and additions that include a pool table, a stage in the back, and a photo booth. “You can sit and talk,” says the bar’s GM Anthony Mitchell. “It’s a place where you can watch live music; it’s comfortable.” The name nods to local hero John Prine and his song Souvenirs. Drinks are kept simple with shot-and-beer combos and a variety of beers, but specialty cocktails are on offer and taken seriously: “We don’t carry shit if you’re going to get a drink, it’s going to be well made,” Mitchell says. The stage will mostly feature local acts with the potential for national touring bands if demand grows; the goal is to channel alt-country much like the Empty Bottle. Programming starts with karaoke on Thursdays and a femme- and queer-focused DJ dance party weekly called Pink Pony Sundays. The bar is open daily from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m." - Ashok Selvam

On Lake Street and Morgan Street in Chicago and 1 block away from the green line CTA station. It was nice how they had a live country song band playing and they were great. They also had line dancers dance w the band. One of the band members attend Belmont college in Nashville which is a great college for smart and talented musicians who also happen to be Christian. Such sweet souls to be earnest about playing music while also being kind to souls. They have a pool table you can play while listening to music. They also have a booth for taking and buying pictures and then posting it on the wall. That is a very nice feature. It’s like a dive bar so no food. There are some charging stations under the bar table. It’s like a dive bar so no food. There are some charging stations under the bar table. It’s $4.75 an hour for street parking on the ParkChicago app.

We stumbled upon Broken Hearts walking west on Lake street. Thank God. We were in search of a top flight dive bar and this is IT. Felt like walking into a bar along a frontage road in Texas. They have all the classic American beers — and even Lone Star! Highly recommend.

Came in early on a Saturday night, I thought music was supposed to start around 9 like it said on their social media, but it started after 10. Very cute interior. Has a photo booth. By the time music started it was very crowded. Interesting blend of queer and traditional cowboys in the crowd. Did not pay a cover to see local country music that night! Queer friendly.

This spot is great if you’re looking for a West Loop bar on a Monday! They have a cocktail menu and they also have cheap $4 Hamm’s. The vibe is definitely classic Americana dive bar. Great for groups and they have free pool Sunday-Wednesday! FYI they don’t serve food.

So cute my favorite bar now! The vibes are immaculate, lots of space, not crowded. Outdoor area and live music

Cool little "fake" country dive bar. I love the decor, music, service and prices. I only say it's a fake dive bar because it's new, very clean, doesn't sell cigarettes and doesn't quite have a big crowd of locals. Still an awesome place I always enjoy. Get there, it's pretty cool.

Hands down my favorite bar in Chicago! Home away from home for me. My favorite bartenders in all the land. Great drinks and even better music. Sorry if you don’t get it, but I sure do! Love to all that runs this place!!!

We received the most horrendous service of experienced in a long time! The young man behind the bar ignore us the entire time. They didn’t even greet us when we first sat down just said what can I get you? And then he went back to talk to the girls. We asked for a lemon drop shot and got some blue drink. Which everybody should know like women drop shots are not blue, but we took it anyway. Now we had a Jager bomb and then we left.

Yelp
New bar in town! Live music on the weekends it seems, and they had a great band when I went! Some tables that are first come first serve and a nice open space in front of the stage. Bar really opens up when you go inside with pool table up front. Photo Booth in the back too!

Yelp
Came here last night and at first I was skeptical because I saw that it was a "honky tonk" bar and I wasn't sure if I was in the mood for some country music. I was pleasantly surprised when I entered the bar as it was very spacious and not divey at all. I came on a Wednesday night where there was a group of line dancers there and they danced their little hearts out. They had a line dance for every single song that played, I was very impressed. Although it was line dancing night, the crowd was still a great mix of everyone, which I loved. I heard Thursdays nights are karaoke nights so I may check them out on a Thursday next. It was a great crowd for a Wednesday night and I truly enjoyed myself. They had a good mix of drinks available from beer, wine, cocktails, and frozen slushies. I had to try their Ranchwater drink which is Topo Chico mixed with vodka and lime. The wait at the bar wasn't bad at all. Overall the deejay was playing great music from a mix of hip hop to country. Also a great place to people watch. They also have a taco restaurant right across the street and we were allowed to bring outside food in. Definitely a plus!! Plenty of tables and chairs available if you didn't want to dance and just hang out.

Yelp
I stopped in here after dinner and we overhead the bartender recommend this to some other folks for cheap and cool drinks. The drinks were not cheap but the ambiance and space is super fun. They have old TVs playing a VHS movie which is also projected on a wall. Music in the corner for dancing, very cool! Bartenders were nice and the drinks were good. Not overly crowded and bathrooms were clean.

Yelp
This place is a different bar everytime I come which I think tells you what you need to know about this place. On Thursdays they have Karaoke. It's really hard to hear the KJ at the end of the bar. I signed up for karaoke but had to keep checking since I couldn't hear names being called. After an hour I asked where my name was since I had tipped when I signed up. After establishing I wasn't going to sing I ended up requesting my money back since the purpose of tipping is to move up.... I was eventually refunded after sending two Venmo requests, but we spent so much time at this bar instead of going to a real karaoke bar.

Yelp
Ahh! This used to be Nights and Weekends, remember that! This is from the folks that's behind Estereo, Sportsman's Club, Revel Room and etc. They have live music every weekend. They don't serve food. Also, complimentary pool from Sun. - Wed. The staff and service are not broken.

Yelp
Best new bar in town. Great vibes and killer honky tonk live local bands on the weekends. Highly recommend !!
