Chicago’s Best Desserts Served at Restaurants | Eater Chicago

"This soul food restaurant in Bronzeville drew Jay-Z’s attention in 2023, known for dishes like fried catfish and smothered oxtail. It’s a small restaurant with a casual vibe, with a pair of desserts on the menu. Both the peach cobbler and pound cake will sell out, so don’t be surprised. But do make a plan to get the pound cake with a hint of lemon. The butter treat goes well with sweet tea." - Ashok Selvam

"Yes, this is the restaurant that Jay-Z visited. Try smoothered ox tails, baked turkey wings, or pan-seared salmon (on Sundays only). Ownership feels they can hook diners with their pound cake, and it’s a decadent buttery morsel that’s good for an every day pick-up or to celebrate something." - Ashok Selvam

Listen, if you’re anywhere near Bronzeville and craving real deal soul food, don’t sleep on Bronzeville Soul. I had the catfish, candied yams, mac and cheese, and a sweet tea and everything came out hot and fresh, like steaming straight from the grease fresh. That catfish was crispy and seasoned just right. The yams were sweet and buttery, and the mac and cheese? Cheesy, creamy, and comforting like Sunday dinner at grandma’s. You can tell they put love in this food. The customer service was on point, friendly and welcoming. The prices were more than fair for how much food you get big portions and big flavor. There’s a little construction going on out front, but don’t let that stop you. They’re still open just follow the signs and use the entrance around the side. It’s super easy to get in. If you’re looking for the best catfish or some of the best soul food on the South Side, this is it. I’ll definitely be back. Tell them Nicole sent you! .

Google
Good soul food. Catfish was good and sides were good. A little pricey but tastes home made. I did a review for my YouTube channel "Mailman Nick"

Google
Food was so good! Flavorful and not over salted. Fresh and very hot. Not a long wait either.

1st time coming to Bronzeville and the food was great! Yummy. Well seasoned. I chose Sweet Potatoes for dessert...best choice..so velvety.and perfectly seasoned.

I’ve been a few times. I’ve tried different meals. I’m a bit disappointed. The last try was their (dry) Turkey Wing dinner with cabbage and dressing. It wasn’t good. Dry Turkey with spices on it. You can imagine how hard it was to eat and swallow it. I hope they rethink it. The dressing was with the most interesting taste. Not good. I’ve eaten at too many good restaurants, so this just wasn’t “it”. Note, the people are nice and helpful — but I wish they’d invest in the flavor and removal of dryness to their foods. The menu is in the most inconvenient place. Instead of being on a big wall in front of you it’s off to the side and small. I thought it was shameful and greedy that they charge you for a cup of water. They want to capitalize on customers buying bottled water. Even for those dining in their restaurant. Choose wisely — the dry turkey wings irritated me. Then certain foods aren’t ready or in the restaurant yet and you have to wait an hour or longer. Plan in advance. I send about 5 people there weekly after leaving weekly meetings in the area. I’m going to stop that for a while! Owners, please take in our concerns.

Google
Catfish was seasoned and cooked perfectly, super tender and flavorful. Portion sizes were substantial but not so much you can’t finish your plate if you’re really going in which I appreciate. Cornbread has perfect amount of moisture. The people were extremely friendly and gave us a really great welcome and explanation of the menu. We’ll definitely be back

Google
I ordered to-go. I was advised to look at the menu they had posted up and so I did. An older guy came up to me and helped me with suggestions and his own recommendations. He recommended the Banana pudding and im happy I got it because it was amazing. When I went to the counter to order, a younger man took order. He was really nice and asked questions like do I need extra utensils etc. He informed me to take a seat and that my food would be brought to me. After 10 mins of sitting, he approached me and asked if wanted a beverage on the house. I politely declined but that was really nice of him! I got the 2 catfish entrees. One with greens and Mac and the other with Mac and dressing. Everything else was phenomenal and I say this because I drove 35 minutes back home to eat and it was still fresh!! The catfish was seasoned and tender. The greens were a solid 7. And the Mac and cheese was perfect. That banana pudding stole the show!!! I’ll go back just for that! I think I spent around $60? Which isn’t bad! The wait was a little while but I’ll take a longer wait for fresh food.

Google
Bronzeville Soul should literally be ashamed! I gave them a 1 ONLY because i had to give a number. I think they forgot and had our food sitting because it was all COLD! They did bring fresh wings and mac after my Husband complained but we paid $100 for a meal prep container full of garbage. The jerk lamb chops were served as 3 slivers of chops. What a whole disappointment! My Husband is a chef from Chicago so we tried to take it easy on them but the truth is the truth. The yams had a gummy texture that I can't describe and the sides were taste-sized portions. We almost got some peach cobbler but he quickly changed his mind.

Yelp
Lovvvvvved the Beef Short Ribs! All The food was amazing! Seasoned to perfection! Juicy and tender! We ordered steak, mac&cheese, fried corn, short ribs, turkey spaghetti and string beans with turkey meat! Let me say it again, ALL of it was delicious! We will be back for Take Out only! The space was large but I was underwhelmed by the ambiance and service. Please do better... the service was subpar, it was almost like ordering food at your grandmas, with family or a close friend, there was no professionalism, no warm welcome, idk just didn't seem like they even try, lol. They weren't rude or unkind though, so we'll be back for sure!

Yelp
Back home in Los Angeles and absolutely regretting that we did not go back again last night before closing. We went on Friday evening and were so happy with our food that we showed up on Saturday to try the catfish. Friday: Ordered the Oxtail, short ribs, fried wings, Mac and cheese, green beans, candied yams, collard greens and passion peach tea. They ran out of catfish and so Chauncey said to come back tomorrow for it. Saturday: We came back for the catfish and more wings. This was our pre-meal before going to Virtue a few hours later. We loved the hospitality and the food! Next time we're in Chicago--- we're going to need to come back! During this trip to Chicago my preschooler had not eaten any real food (he had just been snacking... even bought him chick-fil-a... barely touched it. But he devoured the wings, cleaned the meat right off those bones. I also learned I must've never had good collard greens because I had never liked the taste. I had no problem eating these greens!

Yelp
I was craving soul food on a Sunday evening and decided to finally go check out Bronzeville Soul. Especially since it was in the neighborhood and Jay-Z made a cameo there last summer. I called in to place a to-go order but was informed they didn't take phone orders on Sundays. No biggie. As I had already checked out the menu online, I knew I wanted the catfish, mac n cheese and fried cabbage. When I walked in, I was geeeted by the very friendly manager, Chauncey, who after learning I wanted catfish, persuaded me to try the fried salmon. What the hell...I've never had fried salmon and I firmly believe in trying new things. After paying for my order, I went to check out the whiteboard menu and saw collard greens and cornbread dressing, which I didn't notice on the website. So I went back and ordered those sides, as well. Once I got home, I could barely contain my excitement as I ripped into my package. Every bite of each item was delectable and lived up to everything I know about soul food. The portions are generous and I have leftovers to enjoy tomorrow. Chauncey even encouraged me to come back on Wednesdays when they have live music. I'll definitely be back!

Yelp
I decided to stop in for the first time for an early dinner. It was around 4 pm on a Saturday and it wasn't crowded at all. Street parking was easy to find. The decor is simple and understated; very spacious. I loved the black artwork and the good music playing. I placed my order at the counter and then sat down. The meal was brought over to me in about 10 minutes. The meal that's pictured was about $24 with tax and a bottle of water; I thought that was a fair price. Everything was hot; the catfish was freshly fried. It was a good meal. I wasn't blown away but satisfied. The staff was very nice and came over to make sure everything was good. I would go back because they have more on the menu I'd like to try.

Yelp
I have been wanting to visit Bronzeville Soul since Jay Z visited this location summer 2023. Great food! Parking: plenty of Street parking. I entered Bronzville Soul and immediately felt soulful vibes from music playing in the restaurant. I ordered my meal to go: wings, which comes with 2 sides and a muffin. Sides were seasoned okay; the wings, however small in size, were perfectly seasoned and tasted phenomenal!! Owner was at the front of the house taking orders and was personable. People were steady coming into the location. Patrons consisted of a combination of dine in and take out orders. Took awhile to get hot sauce with my order. Nice colors/decor 2 words for my meal: No Crumbs. I plan to visit again.

Yelp
Like most people, I've only just heard about this place because of Jay-Zs recent visit. I still dont understand how a celebrity finds places like this, when's there's so much hype around other places that sell similar food. But good for Bronzeville Soul. We stopped in and noticed an empty dining area. I sure hope they're doing a lot of takeout. The owner was at the counter with another staff member. He invited us in and thanked us for stopping in. I was disappointed to see that literally none of the items I wanted to try were available the day I stopped in. I wanted to try their short ribs, Mac & cheese and yams. None were on the menu. I instead ordered their chicken wings with mashed potatoes and dirty rice. They also give you a corn bread which was very delicious. They asked us if we're doing takeout or dining in. I was kind of in a rush but still had a little time. I asked him how long would it take for the food to be ready, he said 7 minutes so we decided to dine in. Ended up being 15 minutes which was obviously double the time promised, probably would have done takeout if they had said 15-20 min. The chicken wings were really good. They were really hot, fresh out of the fryers. The seasoning on these was simple yet very tasty. They were very juicy and tasted phenomenal with hot sauce. The mashed potatoes were also very flavorful. I'm a big rice guy. I love love love rice. But the rice was was a let down. I got a lot of old hard pieces that made this side close to inedible. It was unfortunately a huge disappointment. Overall I was really satisfied with the dish. The price is definitely on the high side but me and my son shared this entire plate and we both left full. So it's definitely a lot of food. I just wish the menu was more consistent and will only return when I can confirm that the certain items I'm looking for will be on the menu.

Yelp
Today I tried something new to see all the hype , the service was nice , I was disappointed however I went for the porter house and they were sold out. I ended up getting the fried catfish and got the baked chicken for son , the sides were greens and sweets as well as mac n cheese and dressing, the corn muffins were Jiffy and mine were burnt . I want to try the porter house and maybe other sides the ones I tried I cant say I will try again .

Yelp
This place has been on my radar for a few months and when I saw Jay-Z showed up a couple weeks ago, I thought let me hurry up and get there before the wait times extend! Me and my mom dropped in recently mid week around 3:30 in the afternoon and there wasn't a crowd thankfully. A line started to form once it got closer to 5pm FYI. They have maybe 10-12 tables for dining in, but they accommodate pickup orders in case you dont wanna wait. The now famous owner, Mario Coleman was at the counter taking orders which was cool. I had to go with th newly christened Jigga short ribs with sides of mac & cheese and green beans. Everything was very good especially the short ribs, but just a warning, the food carries a hint of spice FYI, but still good. Pound cake along with peach tea was very awesome! Mario and staff go out of there way to make you feel welcome in their establishment which is very cool! I really like this place and plan on coming back often as he told us the menu changes daily.

Yelp
YOOOOOOOO. My friend and I randomly met a woman in Downtown Chicago who told us this was the place to go for GOOD soul food. I was in town from San Diego for not even 2 whole days. But her recommendation was so strong, we had to take heed. We came to dine in for dinner and shared the proteins. I ordered the catfish filets meal, with greens and mac and cheese as sides. My friend ordered the lamb chops with greens, mac, and yams. She also got chicken wings. All meals come with a cornbread muffin. When I tell you: EVERYTHING WAS DELICIOUS. SEASONED TO PERFECTION, without salt overshadowing FLAVOR. The fry of the catfish was DIVINE. A nice, sturdy, crisp, crunchy bite that was also moist in the inside. I like tartar sauce with a few bites of my fish, but this didn't really need it. It was perfect. The sides were GOOD. The greens?! YUM. So pretty. SO tasty. Mac was cool, too, made even better when I sprinkled a lil' hot sauce in. The LAMB CHOPS. Just maybe sliiiightly overcooked than what I prefer, but overall: SO WORTH IT. Very nice sized, meaty chops of well-seasoned deliciousness. I kinda wanted to order some to-go, but I was already so full. We'd informed the friendly, welcoming staff that we were from California and they rolled out the hospitality red carpet, giving attentive service and even free specialty drinks! I felt so welcomed and super glad we followed directions to visit Bronzeville Soul. They WILL be seeing me next time I'm in town! I'm thankful to the staff for everything!

Yelp
Great place! I've had takeout and I have dined in and both times the food was amazing! It is BYOB and they have a live band here every 1st & 2nd Wednesday of the month. The customer service here is top-tier and the atmosphere is so friendly. I love that they bring your food out to you already in a to-go container. I would definitely dine here again so that I can taste everything on the menu.
google avatar

Yelp
3.5 stars A group of us came here for r&B night which is held. It's held every second and every 4th Wednesday of the month. Where they play live music. I saw the so/so reviews so I was apprehensive a placing a food order but I know it was better to come and purchase something at this venue since admission was free to come in and hear the music. They also have a sign that I didn't know that you need to order at least for the minimum of $15 per patron for offsetting the cost of the band . My original order was the short ribs which I absolutely love short ribs and it's hard to go into an establishment that actually offer beef ribs as opposed to pork. But when I sat down at the table one person was not happy with her food so I hurried and ran back and changed mine to chicken wings. Thinking that you can't mess up chicken wings, right? Let me tell you that it takes a long time to get your food in this place and the gentleman that was calling out the numbers was almost not believing that we did not have the number that he was calling out at the time. We literally had to turn our receipt to show him. Sir, this was not our order. I mean we can eat the food but it doesn't belong to us! So that being said, everyone waited at least 30 to 40 minutes for their food. It was okay. I think my order came with about four or five chicken wings then weren't that great. I mean you got hot sauce on the table. They're a little crispier on the ends and they were okay from a 1 to 10. I will give them a six on the chicken wings. The sides, the sides for me and the cornbread is what saved the meal. I mean the meal is expensive. $24 for 4 to 5. Chicken wings is ridiculous. Let's be honest here, but my sweet potato and macaroni and cheese and my cornbread muffin definitely seal the deal. The chicken they could have just kept. If I was to go again I will only get sides. The live band was pretty good but the only thing that kept happening. I don't know if it's a building. I don't know if they were putting too much pressure on the electrical system, but at least several times why they were playing the power went out so hope they can get it together

Yelp
I have to admit I came here after hearing Jay-Z came here when he and Beyonce were in town, and I'm pleased to report (as many people I'm sure already knew) that the food is good. The fried cabbage was so good, definitely the best thing we ate. Beef short ribs and white rice was good too and I can't wait to come back and try the other things (at an earlier time before they sell out). I've also come back since that first time and had the corn which is also delicious.

Joseph T.

Yelp
Food is delicious. I got the catfish fillet plate-- they're well seasoned, not dry, and the whole meal is screaming hot. This is some of the best catfish I've ever had. Collards and macaroni are very good too.

Yelp
Get a recommendation from a friend to try Bronzeville Soul. Popped in on a Saturday afternoon. The hostess/cashier showed me the menu for the afternoon and was really cool with explaining the fried cabbage that had piqued my interest. I ordered fried chicken wings, candied sweet potatoes, macaroni and cheese, fried cabbage, and peach tea. The chicken had more than just salt and pepper in the batter -- like some onion and garlic powder. The candied sweet potatoes were a hit. The macaroni and cheese was creamy like out of the box, but with flavor like out of your mom's oven. Didn't expect to fall in love with the fried cabbage. And I was glad the peach tea didn't have a bag of sugar in it. Bronzeville Soul is in a location that I have considered jinxed. So many businesses -- cafes, restaurants, comedy club, coffee shops -- have come and gone. I hope Bronzeville Soul stays for a long while. They've got a regular customer if they do.

Shelia J.

Yelp
My first time here because I heard the food was good. Well, out the gate I wanted the fried cabbage and they were all out at 2:00 in the afternoon, right when people were getting out of church. I had a hard time choosing because the place is definitely a soul food restaurant and since I don't eat meat I opted for the fried corn and sweet potatoes. Both were very good. There are seats but I would definitely consider this a take out restaurant and even if you're dining in the food comes in take out containers. The staff was nice but the place lacks ambiance. I will probably not be back. It's just a little too hood for my liking.

Yelp
*Black Owned* *New Business* I saw this place on IG, on Black people meets, I believe. I was south and getting my hair done nearby, so I stopped in. I believe the guys who took the order were the owners. They were the coolest guys EVER! They don't have an extensive menu, and I think the items they serve change daily. But, what we got, we LOVED!!!! We ordered 3 dinners, steak, jerk lamb chops, and a beef short ribs dinner with various sides on each plate. I also added 3 fried chicken wings to my order which wasn't on the menu but they accommodated my request with an upcharge of course. We dined in. THE FOOD WAS DELICIOUS!!! I absolutely loved my beef short ribs, yams, and string beans. My fried chicken was really good too! Everything was fresh and piping HOT!!!! The place was clean and huge! We also did BYOB. The owners came and chatted with us. Im definitely going to go back, sooner than later.

Yelp
The food I ordered brought me back a second time!!! I hope they don't disappoint. I walked in this time for my mom to try the dressing. The customer service was very friendly. The atmosphere is diverse. The ambiance is quiet with soothing jazz music playing in the background. Yelp, I will recommend and say this establishment is TEAMBROWN Approved.

Yelp
Sooooooo, was searching all over the place to get some good soul food, came across this restaurant on Yelp. The positive reviews outweighed the cons and we decided to try it out. It's Black Owned, WHY NOT? BOOOYYEEEE ARE WE GLAD WE DID! Wheeeeewww! I'm talking about we ordered three entrees to get extras to try multiple things (Catfish Dinner, Short Rib Dinner, Fried Chicken wings) each came with 2 sides and then we ordered extras. Collard Greens, Dressing, Green Beans, Yams, Mac n'Cheese, Green Beans and Spaghetti and we also got Peach Tea and Pound Cake. EVERYTHING WAS DELICIOUS! We even ordered more To Go just to have a plate for lunch the next day! 10/10 Do Recommend. Will be back!

Yelp
Great customer service and friendly staff with some amazing food per my friends because I'm Vegan.... You can dinne in or have it to go....
google avatar

Yelp
Everything they served was kind of spicy, in my opinion. Even the macaroni cheese, the greens, etc. So, I probably won't be going back anytime soon. It's convenient, because I live a few blocks from here, but I don't think the food was all that great.
google avatar

Yelp
Not really all that : I been wanting to get here even before JayZ visited here : I ordered the bake Turkey , Dressing & MacCheese : got home & no cranberry sauce : Now it's wasn't the worse but neither the best .

Yelp
One of Chicago's hidden gems. Food is delicious and it will make you think your at your mama's kitchen table eating. Great place to dine out and the ambiance is fantastic. Fried Catfish Fillet & Fried Cabbage was the best thing I've eaten in a while. Thank you for your hospitality and great food Bronzeville Soul, I'll be back!!

Yelp
Don't like that everything is Ala carte. You're not some high-end restaurant. Just give me a full price for a dinner selection and quit nickel and diming customers!

Yelp
Listen, I'm new here, from Louisiana and lived all over the south. I wasn't expecting much but BAEBEE I was impressed. We walked in early and seemed to be the first customers. We were greeted immediately by two men who we learned were the owners and chefs. They were very inviting and explained the menu as well as other events that they have at the restaurant through out the week. We were told the wings were cooked to order and it would be a bit of a wait but honestly it was all of 15 minutes and our plates were brought to us. The food was piping hot and plentiful. Now: the food was good. I mean reminded me of how my MawMaw seasons food. The chicken wings had flavor and the beef ribs were so tender. The Mac & Cheese WAS SEASONED but not at all overwhelming. The sweet potatoes were sweet & syrupy and the greens great. Half was through our meal we were brought out a sample of the baked chicken and guess what y'all... SEASONED ... falling off the bone tender. And the peach tea, although diabetical, was delicious. And the food tasted fresh, like it was just cooked. Very impressed with the food and service of this restaurant and we will be back.

Yelp
Took my Fraternity Brother from Washington, D.C. He was in Chicago for a WEFTEC CONFERENCE. THE FOOD WAS GREAT. Fried chicken wings were not on the menu but they made them for me. Really appreciated that gesture. We were really hungry and thoroughly satisfied. I recommend this play to all Soul Food starved people.

Ruby H.

Yelp
Great food and attentive service. The owner has really put a lot of work into the quality of the food. He's got plans to improve the look and feel of the place in time. Right now, we had the fried catfish and the jerk lamb chops. Both excellent flavor and the sides will remind you of delicious home style southern cooking. This food is, "to die for" especially on these frigid days and nights. See you there tomorrow!

Yelp
Found out about this place through Chicago's Black Restaurant Week. Decided to get dinner here as it was on the way to a show in Hyde Park. I was a bit confused on where to enter. However, that's on me for not understanding the signs they posted. Got myself the fried chicken, with mac n cheese and yams combo. For the prize I was surprised how many pieces of chicken I got. Not to mention that none of these pieces were light on meat. The mac n cheese was also delicious, but if I'm honest the yams were the stars. Flavorful, great texture, and a good balance to the plate. Also, all of these still were phenom as leftovers the next day. The place needs a little more lighting for the guests, but that's really my only complaint. The service was sweet and always had a smile when we chatted.

Yelp
Had a wonderful time here. It was 3 of us dining on Sunday. This was a fabulous Sunday meal. I had catfish, cornbread dressing, collard greens and peach cobbler. My friends had baked turkey wings and the same sides. We couldn't stop eating it was so delicious. Thad was so attentive. He helped us with anything and everything we needed. I would highly recommend you stop in and patronize this new business. Mario is personable and welcoming. He stops by every table to check in.

Yelp
Recently, I had a chance to experience this restaurant with a friend. I ordered the short ribs with cabbage and fried corn. Also, I ordered a catfish dinner to go. Everything was just OK, but what I really didn't like is the to go boxes that they served the food in. And, gave you plastic forks, etc. There were no plates, no silverware, etc. That's a problem for me! I didn't like the ambience at all if you wanna call it ambience. Another thing, the food is spicy and salty. I'm a senior citizen and I can't do crushed red pepper or cayenne pepper. Even the corn was spicy. I didn't think they'd put spice in macaroni and cheese, but when I got home the to go, dinner was catfish with macaroni and cheese And candied yams. The yams tasted strange, also. I think they used corn syrup in the yams. I can cook, and I could've done a whole lot better than they did. When I wanted to order dessert, they were out of the peach cobbler and the poundcake, so no dessert. We arrived at about 4:30 PM and they were running out of food. They had to Prepare some of the food while we waited. I decided to order the catfish to take home and talked with the owner. He said that he could rinse the catfish which meant he could rinse off the seasoning, because he had seasoned the batter and the fish. So, I took a chance and ordered the catfish to go. It wasn't bad, but it's not anything that I would go back to order. I won't be going back. Sorry, not sorry.

Yelp
My favorite restaurant in chicago. Quality food Great service Super clean environment And the owner is super welcoming. I hosted my sister birthday dinner here. He accommodated a party of 10 on short notice. I will be back soon. Plus it's BYOB

Yelp
food was not what I/we expected. the look of the place was not what I/we expected. The service was just ok. In essence, I wouldn't refer, I wont go back. It just wasn't worth the hype. I know JAY-Z was disappointed when he went. The pictures of the food look way better than the taste to me!

Yelp

Yum, yummy, and yum-o! Delicious wings, Mac and cheese and green beans. And I couldn't leave without a slice of pound cake. What a treat!! Great customer service and warm reception from the owner and staff. Thanks, Bronzeville Soul!

Yelp
The food here is awesome. The Mac & Cheese is very tasty and just the right amount of cheese and seasoning. The chicken is crunchy and indescribably delicious. The service is very inviting, and courteous. This is a place you must try. Outside of what I have mentioned, there are a lot of other dishes they serve that I cannot wait to try. Go check this place out!!!!

Yelp
Came all the way from Rockford on Saturday August 17 @ 4 pm to enjoy this food that Jay Z just came n reviewed. Right when you walk in the building the atmosphere was nice and chill and loved the music playing as well. We ordered the Jigga Man Beef short ribs with yams and Mac and cheese and an order of pound cake. We tried the short ribs first and was real disappointed that our ribs were cold to the touch and the yams and Mac were luke warm. Once I went back to let the manager know he apologized and offered us two free sweet teas while we wait for them to remake our order. And to my surprise while waiting for our food we see the workers literally take our food out of the microwave instead remaking our order like they said. Real life disappointed that they would give us the same food right out the microwave in my view. Then asked the manager if they put our food in the microwave n he laughed at me n handed me my plate. It said made to order and not made to microwave and serve it right back to your customers. Came to support them and left with a real bad taste in my mouth About my experience there.

Yelp
Delicious & juicy catfish & the green beans & yams sides so scrumptious. I love the space & the staff were extremely kind & friendly. Ample portion & fair prices for a hot fresh meal. I will def come back to try more, then bop to Renaissance to dance it all off!

Yelp
The food was amazing. Very flavorful, fish fried hard just like I asked. Clean, laid back establishment. I will return back to Bronzeville Soul.

Yelp
I think it's great to have a soul food restaurant especially on 47th and King Drive that's great I haven't eaten there yet I'm looking at the prices seems to be $35 for entrees and that doesn't include side dishes which are a la carte so I'm figuring dinner for two people with a tip is about a hundred and fifty five dollars for soul food I don't care how good it is can't do it but for those that enjoy it and I wish the business well but come on you guys come on

Yelp
I was happy to see a new local soul food spot so I tried this place with the hubs. Ugh! Everything was REALLY salty. #MaybeItsMe

Yelp
Great, tasty food! Personable customer service! Dine-in service was awesome. Very clean, warm, and friendly place. Peach Passion Tea was my favorite and the lemon pound cake was a great finishing for my catfish dinner!

Yelp
The first time I went to this restaurant everything was on point. The food, the customer service, and the vibe was nice. I came in dined in with a friend. We both ordered the catfish, green beans, and Mac and cheese with the peach passion fruit tea. We dined in and it wasn't too busy or crowded everything tasted amazing! And the green beans were the best I have ever had. It's hard to find a good soul food spot do I was sure that I would eventually return and I did and I am soooo disappointed. I came back a couple of Sundays ago after leaving navy pier. I didn't feel like cooking so I decided to stop In. The customer service was on point there was a man there to greet you at the door and help you choose your food. We were basically shouting at each other because the music was so loud...but I ordered the turkey wing dinner with Mac and cheese, and green beans to go. I was so excited to eat my food but everything was off and bland and I do mean EVERYTHING! Even the tea was watered down. The turkey was dry to the bone, the Mac and cheese was overcooked and mushy, those green beans that I loved were basically not even in my meal just a big piece of meat fat that was used to flavor the green beans the few I did get were overcooked and stringy and I'm not sure what happened with the cornbread but all I had was the top!! I honestly just wanted to cry! The entire plate went in the garbage. I called no one answered...Who stole the soul from bronzeville???
