I hosted a friend birthday party at Brooklyn on U last weekend so my review is for my experience on a Friday Night during happy hour. I spend so much time on U street that I've always wanted to check this place out! I was under the impression it was a black owned spot but not entirely sure as I've heard they are making some changes and in transition.
So, let's start with the good:
Prior to our visit, I arranged table/dinner reservations with the Friday promoter. He reserved two dinner booths for the birthday party. When I met him , he was very friendly and accommodating. I was able to bring balloons into the lounge as well. It was definitely a nice touch.
Next, it's a beautiful space. The lower level is more of the bar, Dj area, and dining room. This is where the after work happy hour jumps off. There is a "Brooklyn" greenery wall near the DJ booth and it's an excellent place to take pictures. I would recommend everyone getting a picture there! Brooklyn on U has happy hour deals and you can get anything from pizza, to chicken wings, and tacos.
I appreciated how our server allowed for everyone to have separate checks (I requested that upfront) by taking everyone's credit card.
The dj playing during happy hour is very good. We all were dancing, dropping it low , and celebrating our friend birthday.
After 10, the 2nd level opens up and it turns into more of a club. You truly feel like you are in a different place and in a nightclub. There is ViP, dance floor and another bar. When I went up there for a second, it was pretty packed and people were drinking and enjoying themselves.
Now to the not so good:
I ordered the sangria pitcher which was on happy hour. I was disappointed because it wasn't good at all. You couldn't taste ANY alcohol and you definitely were not getting a buzz off of it. Next, I ordered old bay and buffalo wings. When they arrived, they looked good but they were so bland and where was the seasoning.?!! They were so horrible. I almost sent them back. I was definitely still hungry after I left. I think our server was overwhelmed (Francisco ?) that I had to remind him to bring stuff I ordered. I deducted star because this place doesn't go tasty food.
So, here is when the nights gets bad. Brooklyn on U doesn't have coat check so I put my coat in the booth. I'm getting ready to leave and my coat goes missing. I asked the bouncers and bartenders if someone turned in a coat to no avail. I search the bar area and NOTHING. So, essentially, I left with no coat in the cold. I kept calling the establishment over the next five days. No one answered the phone. In addition, to that, I went to Brooklyn on U Instagram page and direct messaged them and no response. Yet, someone was creating stories and making posts. Also, I texted the phone number that was on the voicemail and again,crickets....
All I wanted was a response to see if anyone turned it in or if the establishment has cameras. Finally, after I commented on a IG post and a week later, the response to my missing coat was "I'm not sure. You are welcome to stop by and check." To make matters worse, I went in yesterday and sure enough the coat was found in the front of the bar. Could no one check or respond to messages during the week and advise me it was there? Because of this, I deducted stars because customer service doesn't to be their niche.
So, if you want a sexy spot on U street to take pictures and dance, this is definitely one of the classy and bigger establishments on the U street corridor.
