12 Best Pizza Spots in Charleston | Eater Carolinas

"Downtown Summerville’s Brooklyn South, as the name suggests, is the place to get a New York-style slice. Channel the Corleones with the Godfather — featuring ham, salami, pepperoni, provolone, banana peppers, and mozzarella — or try Jake’s Smokehouse pizza with smoky charbroiled chicken and bacon plus smoked cheddar, mozzarella, and barbecue sauce. Best for: A taste of New York" - Denise K. James

Google
Their pizza is incredible. The attached photos are of a small pie with extra cheese and half pepperoni. With some pizzerias, when you ask for extra cheese, sometimes you can hardly tell there is any extra on it. Not at Brooklyn South! I got exactly what I paid for and it was delicious. My only negative about the place is that the dining tables are often dirty from previous customers, but that certainly won't deter me from eating there again. Fantastic pizza and fantastic customer service!

Google
Ordered 2 large pizzas and an order of mushrooms. Paid for order, delivery, service fee, plus tip. App said 30-45 minutes for delivery. Our order arrived 2 HOURS later, lukewarm at best. Here’s the kicker…$12 for 7 mushrooms, just mushrooms, no sauce or anything!! I spent $78 on lukewarm pizza and 7 mushrooms. I knew the prices, that’s not the issue…7 mushrooms and 2 hours, ridiculous.

Google
Another fantastic authentic NY Style Thin Crust Pizza place. Order at the front counter. For dine in, there are 5 or 6 four top, self serve tables. Estimated wait given was 35 minutes for a Large Cheese Pie, not an issue based on volume of to-go orders. Garlic Knots came out in a few minutes to hold us over. Pizza was fantastic. True authentic, New York Style thin crust pizza. Sauce was flavorful and properly seasoned with spices/herbs. Cheese was delicious and that bite of what proper pizza cheese should taste like. Based on the quality of the pizza, anything should be good on the menu. Clean pizzeria atmosphere. Would 100% return. Well done.

Google
This place was great. I decided to try this place on a day when I was VERY hungry because I had skipped breakfast. So I was hoping that it didn’t disappoint. Brooklyn South Pizza, exceeded my expectations! I had the $7.99 lunch special; which gives you any two slices of pizza & a can soft drink. I chose the Margherita & Buffalo Chicken slices, great flavor and the crust was just right. I highly recommend this spot.

Google
This Pizzeria was good because it definitely didn't taste anything like Papa John's, Domino's, or Pizza Hut which was really important for me. We got a large 1/2 Pepperoni 1/2 Sausage. The pepperoni half was great. The sausage side lacked taste or flavor. I can't really comment on the sauce as my party and I do not like saucy pizza so we got lite sauce. The pizza crust/dough was perfect. It is "thin" without being crispy, which I like. Customer Service was spot on. They're good despite our non adventuristic order. We'll definitely order from them again.

Google
Best knots I've had in the south in over 7 years. Fellow NY here and your doing it right. The pizza was delish, and again on a busy Friday night they didnt put out a subpar cooked pizza when I asked for well done. This is major!! I made pizza so understand ovens losing hot spot during business. But most pizzeria around this area when asking well done on a Friday you get a chewy pizza tasting doughy.

Google
This is a very frustrating review to write because based on the food this place should be 5 stars. Unfortunately they have one massive problem that completely shuts that down: They absolutely cannot give you an accurate time to pick up your order. I've been to Brooklyn South twice now, here's how each went: 1) I order over phone. Woman says it'll be an hour and a half. No problem. I show up there at an hour and 40 minutes, and my pizza is ice cold. 2) I order online. Wait time says 45 minutes. I get there in an hour, lady at the counter says it'll be another 25 minutes. I'm sure other reviews will point out the long wait times, but this isn't the issue for me. The issue is that it seems like the only way to get a hot pizza is to order, show up an hour later, then sit in the restaurant until the pizza is done. This is unacceptable. I order takeout so I don't have to sit in a restaurant, let alone for 20-30 mins. It's really a shame because the food is absolutely top notch, some of the best in Summerville, and the staff all seem very polite. I'd love to give these guys 5 stars, but the guessing game of 'when will my food be ready' is not a fun one to play. It would be different if it was 5-10 minutes off, but 20-30? Come on guys, can't we do a little better? Most people won't care if it's a 1:30 hour wait for good food, but we do want to show up when you say and leave with fresh pizza. Best of luck to Brooklyn South, but I'll only be visiting here when/if I have the patience to deal with the inconsistent times.

Yelp
Best Pizza in South Carolina in my opinion. As a forma New Yorker I recommend this establishment without reservations. No pun intended ....

Yelp
This review is primarily based off my delivery experience or lack there of. I placed an order online through whatever platform they were using. Two hours later. The delivery service calls and tells me they can't find my address, the same address that was accepted in the site and that I have to go pick it up. I'm a little annoyed that I am only finding out at the exact time my pizza was estimated to be delivered but I thought , shit happens, at least my pizza will be ready when I get there. Hell, the pizza place is a mile from my house. I drive the mile and imagine my surprise when I get there, over two hours after I ordered, my pizza wasn't ready and it was gonna be another 20 minutes!!! About 15 minutes later, my pizza wasn't ready ready so kudos to them for rushing it. The pizza, in my opinion was just okay, the toppings were clumped together and the overall flavor just missed for me, especially with all the hype! Pizza alone would have been 4 stars but due to their crappy ordering platform 2! They are responsible for platforms they use!

Yelp
Yum! Yum! Yum! First, best garlic knots I've ever had & I've tried them at a lot of places. The knots were garlicky & doughy & perfectly sized! Did I mention they were so good I could've cried?! Our family tried the white pizza, cheese pizza, bacon cheeseburger pizza, chicken bacon ranch pizza & every slice was pure awesome!! The girl who waited on us was polite & cheerful & happy to answer questions!! (Sorry I didn't catch her name, you were great tho!) When you walk in you order at the counter & the pizzas are displayed behind a glass window. There is seating in back, which was just fine for us. They sell desserts in a case by the front, save some room! They look delicious! They offer 2 slices with a soda (pop) for $11.99 (I think ) & it's more than enough food. Slices are large!! Go try, you won't be disappointed!!

Yelp
This pizza is legitimately New York style with NY spring water for the dough. Great prices and huge portions. They offer military discount here, bonus! They have a lunch special: 2 slices and a drink $7.99 M-F 11-3! A must try if you haven't enjoyed a pie yet.

Yelp
I'm on the hunt for a great pizza place, and after trying Brooklyn South Pizza, I'm still looking. Pizza choice is very personal, of course, so I encourage you to give BSP a try. I had a large pizza with 4 toppings, pepperoni, mushrooms, peppers, and onions. The base pizza was just under $18, each add-on was about $3.75; I paid just over $38 - quite high for a large 18"pizza I thought. The pizza was good. The crust was excellent. The sauce was unremarkable, but ample. There wasn't much cheese on it, and I was particularly disappointed that each of the 12 slices only had 2 rounds of pepperoni. Only some 24 pieces on an 18" pizza? That seems particularly stingy compared to other pepperoni combo pizzas I've had. The peppers and onions were similarly scattered, although I didn't care about it as much as I did the meat. I guess next time I'd pay double for double pepperoni to get what I consider ample coverage. The Brooklyn South Pizza workers were extremely polite and customer oriented, and the place was hopping on a Sunday evening, with some dozen and a half pizzas waiting for pick-up and the phone constantly ringing. Clearly BSP has a following. This is a take-out place only, there is a long bench for waiting, but no dining in. BSP: good but not great, and expensive.

Yelp
This is great NY style pizza. Love the sauce. Always quick and friendly service at the counter.

Yelp
Like others, we're on the hunt for great pizza. Most importantly, we're on the hunt for consistently great pizza and it seems that's tricky to come by. The first time we came we waited to review because we thought perhaps it was just an off night, after all the reviews that raved so much for this spot it seemed suspect that the cheese pizza and chicken ranch pizza dough tasted ... stale? Undercooked and stale? We tried it a second time and had that aha moment that aligned with every positive review- sauce, dough, cheese, cook level on point. Third time to secure top honors and cue the whammy noise. A bit off again. A bit stale again. We still ATE our pizza though it was just somehow not the same experience. The staff is so friendly and welcoming and it feels insulting to even mention that the pizza is a hit or miss because you can tell how much passion they have in creating their own pizza paradise. Long story short - give them a try or three and see what YOU decide. Maybe we've just lost our pizza tastebuds along the way having been out of the Northeast for too long!

Yelp
Brooklyn South is our go to restaurant for pizza. the whole family always enjoys the pies and some of the Grandkids are very picky.
google avatar

Cathy N.

Yelp
The pizza maker was making the pizza with his bare hands even answering the phone touching things around him I immediately cancelled my order this is disgusting
google avatar

Yelp
It's nothing like New York Pizza. Believe me I am originally from New York and comparing this to "Real NY Pizza" is an insult. I am sure the people are plenty nice, but it definitely isn't New York Pizza. There's way too much sauce and it doesn't taste right. I got violently ill after eating plain cheese 2 slices... and the calzone was a complete disaster way too much mozzarella. Maybe they need time to find their stride or something but I cannot imagine going back.

Yelp
Went to tonight after a few hours of softball with my oldest daughters. We arrived and they had a whole restaurant to ourselves, it was great. Ordered a couple slices and drinks. They brought the pizza out and enjoyed every bite of it. The owner, Mr. Frank, brought out some wings for me to try, and they were delicious. I asked what the favors/sauce he had drizzled on and stated all the sauces were "Secrets". I commended that answer, the food is always delicious. Hats off, super professional, clean atmosphere.... We'll always come back. Thanks so much!!!

Jessica R.

Yelp
Brooklyn South Pizza is the perfect edition to Summerville and to the South if you've been missing northern style pizza! The "Brodies Bianco" is perfect every time and exactly what i've been looking for the last 6 years since leaving CT! Frank and his staff are all business but always so nice and accommodating, especially the girls up front!
google avatar

Marty C.

Yelp
Forget about it! This is the best Pizza place in Charleston and perhaps the South. Owner Frank is a legend from Brooklyn and his Partner Sean is so accommodating. Listened to Frank telling his employees how to prepare the dough ... he's an artist!!! Born in the Bronx, my wife and I know GREAT PIZZA and Brooklyn South is the real deal. We will be back over and over again! And for those who did not have a good experience, they literally just opened and so I suggest you give them another chance and ask for Frank or Sean!

Yelp
The best pizza I've had so far here in Summerville. Pepperoni used is good quality and has the right amount of kick (not spicy). The sauce is in the middle, not too sour and not too sweet. It is very flavorful and they put the perfect amount, not too much. The dough takes the cake. Crust is cooked in the center. Crispy outside and soft inside base. I wish they include garlic butter to dip the base in to because the base is on the thicker side. Love everything about the pizza. Wings are phenomenal. Perfectly coated in garlic parm butter. Super garlicky which is a good thing for me and THE WINGS ARE CRISPY! (i need to emphasize that, most wing place serves soggy drenched in sauce wings which is not bad but not good either.) They taste just the same as they look on the picture. This is our 2nd take-out from this place. The first one, we got dessert and they are okay. The tiramisu is really good but it needs more coffee. I wont emphasize my review on the dessert since they are so-so.

Carol K.

Yelp
Bought slices of pizza to go which ended up being very dry. Guessing they were sitting around for a while despite my being told they were not by the cashier. Not sure I will try this place again.
google avatar

David S.

Yelp
Love this place! Great pizza and we love the salads. Always fresh. Courteous service.
google avatar

Todd S.

Yelp
2 stars because the pizza is pretty good but not 3 stars because it has definitely gone down in quality. The main issue is that the 3 out of 4 times I've been there to dine in I've had to wait on minimum 45 minutes to get my order after being told 20-25, it's just one large pie. Waiting that long isn't the problem it's that each time I've had to walk back to the front and ask where my order is and it's just been sitting there for quite some time (maybe that's why I feel the quality is dropped since it's not being brought out when finished). No apologies, no acknowledgment of the ball being dropped, no accountability, and no respect for the customer's time or patience. Honestly a "my bad/sorry" would make it right since I understand running a business is tough but it has just gotten old. Haven't had a single issue with the other NY Pizza joint down the street and their pizza and service have been very consistent, I guess the debate over which place to get a slice from is over for me.

Yelp
Service sucked.. I called in at 4:30pm .. they said 30mins.. got there at 5pm.. wasn't ready and didn't come up till 5:38pm.. wasn't even busy and people were just coming in after me and picking up their order and leaving...

Matt T.

Yelp
This is very unorganized. We ordered are pizza, it said 15 to 20 mins. Then they messaged me, stating it would be a hour, not 15 to 30 mins. Then I received a notification that the pizza was ready. When I arrived, the girl said it would be 12 more mins. I waited another 30 mins until my pizza was ready. 10 mins of waiting inside I saw my pizza go into the oven. that was 1 hour and 20 mins after ordering. All together it took 1 hour 45 mins. If I would have know that they were going to lead me on that long. I would have went somewhere else. Other than that the pizza is okay. They are very light on the sauce, add me pizza is greasy .

Gayle S.

Yelp
We have seen many great reviews however this is what we found when we got home !! Definitely burnt we WILL NOT BE BACK !!!!
google avatar

Yelp
The name explains it all.... Great pizza that's fresh, excellent crust and flavor toppings

Ben H.

Yelp
Been here twice now and always incredible food. The stuffed pizza is my go to and a huge menu. Very friendly and kind staff!
google avatar

Roseanne R.

Yelp
We were visiting our Summerville friends, as we live out of town. They had not been to this establishment before and it was near their home. The staff was nice and the restaurant presented as clean. We ordered the highly recommended chicken Parmesan, another pizza with cheese and black olives, as well as a select your own ingredients. The first two were almost tasteless and certainly nothing special. Canned drinks in a cooler but no ice. You could not get a cup of ice. Who doesn't have ice??? Our beverages were warm before received our food. Thin paper plates and plastic utensils were available but not ideal. No beer or wine was available. We left almost a whole pizza because we didn't care to take it home.
google avatar

Lynn C.

Yelp
Went in for a quick slice. It was so good, looking forward to going back. Nice crisp crust, great flavor, sauce was beautifully balanced and ooooh the cheese. YUM

Louis G.

Yelp
As a native New Yorker, 67 years- Bronx born and a Long Islander, I think I would recognize and honest to God slice of pizza made in my former home state. The ambience is of a typical pizzeria in New York. A long wall of bench seats. And chairs. The variety of pies reminds me of my favorite pizzerias in Smithtown, Medford and Ronkonkoma. The ingredients are those you would expect in New York, write down to the efforts made by the owner to treat the local water here so that it parallels the chemical profile of water from Brooklyn. What a treat indeed!
google avatar

Yelp
Tried this pizza joint today with the hopes that we would have a solid go-to near our house. We ordered a few items off the menu but all fell flat except for the NY pie. The gourmet margherita pie was average at best and the "jumbo wings" were anything but jumbo (see picture). The only positive was their NY pizza pie but was hoping for a lot more from this place.
google avatar

Elvis D.

Yelp
Stop in today for lunch. Had pizza and garlic knots. Service was excellent. Food tasted great. Reasonable price. Place was clean. Spoke for a few minutes with owner gentleman. Was pleasant. Would recommend and will return when in the area.
google avatar

John O.

Yelp
Wow!!!!! I love this place! The staff are amazing, the joint is clean, quick and the food.....it's legit NYC Pizza. Good variety too. And better yet...under $10 and you get two slices and a drink. My only complaint...they're closed on Tuesday!

Harris M.

Yelp
Another place that started off good has went to shit. Soggy, greasy pizza an onion Stromboli ( it was supposed to be a phillly cheese steak) small cold wings. I gave them a call to let them know. I could get a refund if I brought there so called food back. I'm not wasting my time for a refund. I will never go back.
google avatar

John I.

Yelp
Pizza was good. We ordered to different pies and were impressed. They did a great job on the crust and make sure it's done perfectly. The wait was 45 minutes.

Savannah W.

Yelp
I wouldn't know how their pizza tastes because the driver couldn't find my house. Dropped it off at the nearest one because they didn't want to look. So lazy. My daughter even waited outside to see if she could flag them down for 20 minutes. Then we called and they told us that they couldn't do anything about it because it was third party delivery. So, we contacted them and they gave us a refund, but told us that they wouldn't bring us another pizza. Why? i still don't know. Me and my daughter were pissed.
google avatar

Timea B.

Yelp
We tried the Jake's Smokehouse pizza, and it was phenomenal! Perfect thin crust pizza with balanced flavors of chicken, BBQ sauce and cheese! Pizza tastes just like an Italian pizza in Italy! I'm European and I was surprised by this pizza quality and flavor! Best pizza in town! I do recommend!!!!!
google avatar

Takeya M.

Yelp
Geezus --it's so good. Jersey City, NJ native here to say this joint checks out! That slice tasted like home. The crust was amazing--my prayers have been answered. Thank you for coming to SC!
google avatar

Jessica T.

Yelp
Ok as a New Englander THANK YOU! I have missed authentic New York pizza (literally aside from family the only thing I miss up north) and you guys knocked it out of the park! So good! Even my very picky two year old LOVED IT! This kid eats nothing but inhaled her slice and told me it was "her favorite"! Will for sure be back, it's just that good!
google avatar

Christopher J.

Yelp
As a life long New Yorker, I can say that this is by far the best New York style pizza in the Charleston area. Still very early into the business and the hype is so strong that it feels very chaotic inside, but the employees not working the counter are super nice and personable. We will be returning and becoming regulars. The best white pizza that I've had since leaving Queens.
google avatar

Scott H.

Yelp
Damn good pizza at a damn good price. Had to tilt that bugger sideways to get it in the doorway!!
google avatar

Kathy S.

Yelp
Came by for a quick pizza and salad for dinner during the middle of the week. Salad was huge and delicious. The pizza, on the other hand, was another story. Believe our order was lost and when someone (not the person who took our order) noticed that we had been sitting there for at least 30 minutes after finishing our salad, put the order in. It was a steady night but not overly busy so not sure how we got overlooked. In the end, the pizza was brought over hot out of the oven with an over crisped crust. Since by now we were late for our next appointment we threw it in a box and may try to eat it later tonight. No apology or appreciation for patience, just guess we were lucky to get it at all. Too many other pizza options to do this place again.

Joe L.

Yelp
If you want the best NY style Pizza in the area. This is the place. Great owner and staff.

D R.

Yelp
My family and I recently tried Brooklyn South pizza and it did not disappoint!!! This is the best NY style pizza you are going to find in this area. I consider myself a bit of an expert on pizza being from NY and experiencing some of the best there is to offer. This is as good as most pizzerias on Long Island and that's saying something. Plus the staff and especially the owner Frank were amazing and hospitable. Run don't walk to Brooklyn South!!

Paul J.

Yelp
Went there yesterday to get a simple pepperoni pizza to go, told it would be 30 minutes, ok that's fine, I'll wait. 45 minutes later I've heard nothing. I go up to clueless girl who took my order and asked where was my pizza, she was working with an upset customer asking where her order was, shit show. A young guy comes with my pizza and explains it's been done but they forget it. Lots of kids running around behind the counter. Older guy making the pizza's, perhaps owner or manager running around trying to manage each kid behind counter. There are no systems in place at this place to make things run smoothly, total chaos!! And the pizza itself was just ok, sauce was tasteless
google avatar

Destiny S.

Yelp
With the long waits I really expected it to be better than it was. We were moving new to Summers Corner and decided to try the new joint regardless of the wait. Well once we got the order the disappointment started. I got a side chefs salad that was missing the dressing. Yes, for some no big deal but we are moving and don't have any dressing! Then got the white Bianca and it didn't have ricotta on it like advertised and lastly the pepperoni was good thank goodness as the rest weren't edible. And for $56 was sooo disappointed.
google avatar

Richard O.

Yelp
It really is as good as being in Brooklyn or Long Island. It's real pizza, made the way it's supposed to be made and tastes the way it's supposed to taste.

Peter G.

Yelp
Finally got a chance to try this pizza place that has a lot of buzz. Underwhelming would be word here. It wasn't bad, but wasn't good either. A little over cooked and not much taste. Not sure if I just got a bad one. May or may not try again. And yes I am from jersey and know what "real" pizza tastes like.
google avatar

Bob F.

Yelp
Good pizza a little pricey restaurants clean staff is friendly everything's new they just need to get some items that they could sell a little cheaper. My order was over $50 with an appetizer, a salad and a small pizza.
google avatar

Christopher O.

Yelp
Best New York Style pizza in Charleston! Just need to lessen the wait time. One to 1 1/2 hour wait is too long!!!! The ambiance Reminds me of a local pizzeria back in Brooklyn New York! Friendly personnel and just plain good pie!!!!!!
google avatar

Andrew H.

Yelp
Pretty Dam Good. Not a huge Pizza guy but you can taste the quality ingredients they use. Worth the money even if a little pricey. You get what you pay for.
google avatar

Jack M.

Yelp
Place is the best because everything on three menu is the right price I would go here everyday if I could best pizza everrrrrrr
google avatar

Alan R.

Yelp
The pizza was amazingly good. Thin crust cooked just right, not soggy or soft. Tasted like I remember from Brooklyn.

Alan S.

Yelp
Pizza was cold and soggy, nothing Brooklyn, nothing special, and definitely not worth the price. The customer service was fine, bunch of kids trying to make a buck.,
