Pepperoni Rolls Are a Classic Dish in the Rust Belt and Appalachia - Eater

"These pepperoni rolls come recommended from Hal B. Klein, the food critic at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The Italian bread at Tomaro’s is particularly good when it comes right out of the oven. Get there early to get a pepperoni roll for breakfast." - Danny Palumbo

Tasty diner, the Reuben is very tasty. Perogies were good but aren't served with onions or sauerkraut so I found them a little plain. However, everyone I've gone with has been happy with that they got, and there's a great selection of takeout frozen foods (I recommend the cabbage roll). The only thing is very few vegetarian options and quite possibly no vegan options, but I could be overlooking something.

I had a lovely first dinning experience at Brother Tom's Bakery in Sharpsburg. The establishment smell so good from the fresh baked goods. My waitress was absolutely wonderful. She was very kind. She was extremely attentive. She made sure that we didn't have to ask for anything. She was already on top of it for us! Prices were reasonable. Now, the food is where it is at! Fresh baked bread! Absolutely delicious! Tastes fresh and home cooked made with love! There was a large selection of baked goods available for purchase. The older woman ringing up the transactions at the bakery counter was not very friendly and welcoming towards us but she did her job and she did it accurately. We will definitely be a returning customer to this hidden gem!

Google
Good breakfast sandwich. I asked if their ham was thick cut, obviously they cut it fresh since they cut it real thick (at least. 25"). Wife has egg allergies and I found out their breads, turnovers, and strudel are made without egg. Good table separation for eating in during covid. Have homemade soups and pierogies too

Our waitress was wonderful, the food was fantastic, and the prices were very reasonable. Bakery items are all homemade. Pierogies are homemade. Portions are generous.

So far, I have bought desserts from Brother Tom’s Bakery one time. The prices were reasonable, and the staff members were attentive and polite. I enjoyed the apricot danish, elephant ear cookie, and bow tie cookies the most. I thought that the apple fritter and dumpling were OK. In the future, I might try some of their sandwiches and breakfast foods from their deli.

If you’re looking for the classic diner breakfast, this is the place! I ordered a more basic breakfast platter, and every item was done perfectly. The donuts are AMAZING.

Google
Can I have a side order of fries with that? "Sure!" .. can you add cheddar cheese? ... also an egg? "To the fries?" ..yes This place is my weakness. 😫

Google
What a local breakfast diner should be! Eggs, french toast and coffee for $7. Simple, no frills, local, friendly and accessible. From my experience the baked goods are good not great, but the diner is top notch for breakfast basics.

Yelp
This is a great little local place. It's my breakfast go to. Prices are great, staff is great and food is good. old fashioned home cooked food. They also sell local made items like turner's and also baked goods, including their homemade bread sliced thin in an old school slicer.

Yelp
What a scrumptious breakfast and overall vibe of a diner. My meal was delicious - pierogis, kielbasa, eggs and toast for under $12 and the servers were so friendly and attentive. I loved my experience here and can't wait to go back!!

Yelp
My neighbor highly recommended Brother Tom's Bakery, so I felt eager to try it. My husband decided to go without me! But he did bring desserts home for me to eat. :) My husband said that the employees were "very nice," and they efficiently served him. The bakery has a deli that serves sandwiches and breakfast foods. Here are my reviews for our desserts: Apple fritter - 3 stars - I did not enjoy the taste of this dessert, but my husband described it as "fine." I could see but not taste the apple. Apple dumpling - 4 stars - Some dough was crispy, and other dough was soggy. I enjoyed the apple filling. Bow ties - 4.5 stars - These cookies are also known by other names such as kolache cookies. They came in assorted flavors such as raspberry, apricot, nut, and cream cheese. I liked the raspberry and apricot flavors the best. Elephant ear - 4 stars - This cookie was a huge size and had a pleasant sugary flavor. Apricot danish - 4 stars - This pastry was sweet and had a delicious center of apricot jelly.

Yelp
I stopped by here this past Sunday morning with my wife. We were out for our morning coffee whenever we happened to pass Brother Toms Bakery and ultimately decided to stop. Before we headed in I took a look on Yelp and had a hard time deciding whether it was a bakery or restaurant. Even so we headed inside where I found out that it was both. They had a couple of seating areas with numerous tables that were surrounded with plexiglass where they had menus and served hot food. Then they had an area which had a display case with baked goods in it, a chest freezer with pierogies and two other display coolers, one with soup and the other with pre made lunches like brat and sauerkraut. On this day my wife and I ended up buying a cream puff, a carrot cake cupcake, a cinnamon roll and then a quart of wedding soup. I ended up eating the creme puff while driving home. While that shouldn't have been a problem, the amount of powdered sugar on it meant that both my face and clothes were dusted with it. The good news was that the cream puff itself was quite good. Even though it was cold from being in the display case, it was easy to tell that the pate choux was cooked perfectly as it was light with the edges having a nice crispy crunch to them. Then the cream filling was flavorful as well and was perfect inside of the shell. After I got home I was able to try the cupcake. As far as bakery cupcakes go, it was on the smaller side, but I am not complaining about that as I loved the $1.50 price tag and actually would prefer more to be this size and price. The cake part of it was dense and moist as expected from a carrot cake while the cream cheese frosting added a nice zing and flavor to it. Overall it was a satisfying cupcake with a just right portion size. While the cinnamon roll was for my wife, I was able to try a small piece of it and was satisfied with both the cinnamon roll and the frosting on top. Finally the wedding soup was consumed by my in laws, it's intended recipient, and they seemed to enjoy it. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again. While the bakery section itself was somewhat small here, what we had was cool. My wife and I also appreciated the pre made food offerings here and thought that their restaurant menu looked promising as well.

Yelp
Friendly staff and tons of baked good options! I had the cinnamon roll, I didn't love it but it was just average. Lots of seating inside. Quick service inside.

Yelp
I was wavering between four and five stars, but I just had the best cinnamon roll I've ever had in my life. And no, I'm not 5 years old. And no, that is not hyperbole. It is the honest to goodness truth. And believe me, I've had a few cinnamon rolls in my day, maybe a few more than I should have had. Sorry, got distracted there. Brother Tom's is SOLID. I've had the breakfast sandwich, the Polish breakfast and an assortment of bakery items. Pierogi's aren't as good as the ones I make (no bias there!) but better than just about any others I've tried. If I'm not mistaken, they use onion powder in their potato and cheese pierogi, which gives it a different but nice taste. I was a little skeptical about serving kielbasa for breakfast, but the kielbasa they use is mild and really works well with the eggs.

Yelp
This is an amazing little deli/breakfast nook in Sharpsburg. Do yourself a favor stop in for breakfast or lunch. Leave with a box of donuts and homemade soup to go. The people are wonderful the food is delicious we love it every time we go
google avatar

Yelp
The breakfast was bland, but had large portions for the cost. Then we checked out the deli, got ham and they sold us ham that had already turned grey. The staff was friendly, but I'm not going back again.

Yelp
Great value for your money. I had the scrambled eggs, sausage, home fries for $8.00 and loved it ! Coffee was good and refills kept coming. Wait staff is friendly and responsive.

Yelp
Just amazing! Great place to go for a delicious, hearty plate breakfast and a friendly atmosphere!

Yelp
Really good little bakery. And cheap. I had a cinnamon role (glazed) and it was awesome. It was like 2.25 I think. They have other baked goods. The lady locks looked delicious. They also have frozen pierogies to go and make hot breakfast stuff. I just grabbed the roll and headed out. Very friendly ladies working there.

Yelp
Had the Polish breakfast with kielbasa and homemade pierogies! It was fabulous and our waitress Sarah was very attentive. Couldn't believe how affordable all the prices were; the deli options are cheaper than Giant Eagle! Get something to go!

Kathleen G.

Yelp
We have been coming here for the last month and this was our third time here. Our son loves the double hamburger (they make the rolls) and the French fries are hot and crisp. We have also had omelets, cheesesteak and hot turkey sandwiches. All were prepared exactly as we wanted and were generous portions. The server we have had each time is very nice and quick with drink refills. The bakery items we have purchased to go have been really good, too. Covid precautions are followed and we felt safe while eating here. Nice little place.

Yelp
Couldn't wait to try this place. Went in to check it out, buy a sampling of baked goods and check out the dining area. First the good news. Friendly, helpful staff. That's so important. And the place was clean and bright. Fairly busy too. The sampling: 1. Cinnamon roll -- nice dough and filling. But it was packed upside down and all of the icing came off. 2 Pecan Roll -- for my wife. She thought it was stale and the dough tasted odd. 3. Brownie -- again, for my wife. She said it was dry. 4. Elephant ear -- huge size, which I liked. Unfortunately it was kind of stale tasting and wasn't crunchy at all. 5. Cake donut with chocolate icing -- first I need you to know I am an icing freak. Love the stuff. And the chocolate icing was pretty good. But even for me, there was way too much on the donut. Actually had to scrape some off! The donut dough itself was just OK. 6. Prices -- maybe a little higher than I expected. Maybe it's because of all the icing they over-apply or the excessive use of plastic clamshell packaging. They aren't cheap! But I intend to give this place another shot. Any food service place can have an off day. So I'll try pastries again. And I do intend to try breakfast. The menu is small but I think that is a good thing. And the people there eating seemed to be enjoying the food. Brother Tom's, you are so close to getting it right in an area that needs a place like yours. I hope you can turn some things around and excel. I'll update my review after my next visit. Soon I hope.

Yelp
After going to cafe on main in Sharpsburg my gf and I drove past this nsc decided to stop as it was literally right down the street from it. We got some bakery items to go and must say the apple dumpling and peanut butter brownie were delicious! We can't wait to go back and get more!

Yelp
Love it here, and the baked goods are amazing. Esp for the price! Also, their meatloaf sammich here is awesome

Yelp
Great little spot to grab lunch when you're in the area! I love that they offer a grilled cheese and tomato sandwich -- my absolute fave! The portions are more than generous for what you'll pay. The grilled cheese clocks in just shy of $5... you can add a healthy serving of french fries for another $2. Some of my favorite french fries around! Not sure what magic they work in the kitchen but they are always perfectly crisp on the outside. I've also tried their homemade pierogi for the Friday lunch special. 6 pierogi with butter and onions -- and these suckers are BIG. Worth every penny. Grab a bag of frozen ones to take home... Brother Tom's offers the classic hunky fillings I grew up eating like lekvar (prunes) and cottage cheese, in addition to your traditional potato and cheese and sauerkraut. Next time I'm here I want to try out their breakfast, which they serve all day!

Yelp
Had an excellent breakfast here today. The place was clean, nice and bright, very friendly and attentive server, food was prepared just right. I had Brother Toms Big Breakfast, which for 8.75, is quite a deal. They also have a wonderful selection of baked goodies which I might have tried if I weren't so stuffed! Great food at a great price. Highly recommended!!

V C.

Yelp
Wow! Everything was delicious! Apple dumplings are wonderful, cinnamon rolls are delicious! They even sell take-out homemade soup which is totally awesome! The person that helped me choose what I wanted was super sweet and took time to discuss what was available. They follow Covid precautions which is very important!

Yelp
Nice little gem in Sharpsburg! Had a yummy steak and cheese omelet. Was larger than I expected. And came with 2 slices of toast. Homemade, delicious toast. Staff was friendly and helpful. Would definitely return!

Yelp
Oh my! Stumbled upon this place while checking out the toy store and the breweries down the street. So glad we popped in. The brownies were phenomenal!!! Best I have had in a long time. We got a variety of goodies. We even got some bread which was good as well. We got some pastries including an eclair which was good. We got a mini pecan pie which was okay. Brownies stole the show. I will need to go back for them!!! Little eat in area where they serve breakfast and sandwiches and things. Terrific!!!

Yelp
Sharpsburg is very lucky to have Brother Toms, it truly has a unique charm. Everything is homemade and delicious. Prices are affordable, service is quick and what I love the most is the atmosphere; The small town diner feel. Not too "trendy" or fussy just a great lil cafe to grab a nice lunch. A great selection of bakery treats and frozen foods to take home. As for my meal I have tried the Turkey club and the chicken philly, both filling and delicious.

Yelp
Had the pleasure of coming here for breakfast this morning. Coffee was good, from Fortunes (roasted locally in McKees Rocks). The sausage and hash browns were a bit on the greasy side, but still good. The French toast was where this place shined, this is by far the best French toast that I have ever had. Made with three huge pieces homemade bread and having a bit of an orange color, it was fantastic. I will definately be returning to try more of what they have.

Yelp
Brother Tom's serves breakfast and lunch, in addition to selling a small assortment of baked goods. This review is only for the bakery. I popped in here on a whim to buy a birthday cake last minute and was pleased overall with my purchase and the service. There were only three small cakes from which to choose, and I bought the vanilla batter-raspberry swirl cake with buttercream icing. The cake was very moist and tasty, but the icing was super sugary and kind of crisp. (I prefer a smooth and creamy icing, but it wasn't the end of the world.) I also tried a cookie and a ladylock. Both were good, but not memorable. On display, there were several different types of doughnuts, a few varieties of cookies, and some random sweets for sale. I was pretty disappointed in the selection, but it could be because the bakery just opened a couple months ago. I'll probably try this place again in the spring.

Yelp
Nice little bakery . Stopped my n and had breakfast and had scrambled eggs , bacon which was the bomb. Potatoes were tasty as well. Toast was home made eye and it was awesome. French toast was very nice as well. The bakery stuff looked awesome. Bought a cinnamon bun with frosting and it was divine! They sold about 10 different kinds of soups and about that many different kinds of frozen home made peroxide as well. It's a simple , clean , hometown bakery that serves breakfast and lunch . Give it a shot and you will like it.

Yelp
I live very close to Brother Tom's and was very excited to see a bakery open in Sharpsburg. Brother Tom's has several good qualities and much room for improvements. I have eaten many baked goods over the years and know what good quality is. PROS: The only bakery items that I will buy again at Brother Tom's are the donuts and the cinnamon rolls. My favorite donut at this bakery is the cake donut with white buttercream frosting. The fudge frosting is good too. The cinnamon rolls are flaky, sweet and delightful with delicious white buttercream frosting. The frozen pierogies are very good. The dough is thin and not bulky. The fillings are pleasant. Warning: The sour cream pierogies are sweet which not everyone likes. I enjoy the sweet sour cream filling; but my husband does not. This is not a negative for Brother Tom's - it's just a personal preference. The frozen soups generally are good, reasonably priced, and a nice option to have at home for a quick meal to heat-up in minutes! Brother Tom's offers a small selection of deli meats which is convenient to have in Sharpsburg. Deli prices are reasonable. Also offered are a small selection of milk and bottled juices and tea. A friend has told me that the homemade bread is good. I will try the bread soon. CONS: The breakfast is OK; I wouldn't order it again because the bacon is cheap quality and the entire plate is greasy which is not my preference. Most of the baked goods are not visually-appealing and are not tasty. As I said above, the white buttercream frosting is delicious; however Brother Tom's using a different white icing in most of the pastries. This other white icing has an undesirable texture of too much Crisco and fake ingredients. I have tried many chocolate chip cookies over the years and Brother Tom's chocolate chip cookies were not good at all. Another downside is they only sell cookies in bags of a dozen. I would prefer being able to buy one cookie to try instead of being married to an entire dozen of a cookie that I may not like. I don't know who buys and returns to buy most of these pastries. OVERALL: I hope that Brother Tom's reconsiders how to prepare many of the pastries; otherwise I'm afraid this restaurant / bakery won't last the long-run in Sharpsburg - a small town that could really use a good business.

Yelp
Great small town simple bakery. Meals are great Made with love and hearty. Always Genuine and kind people.

Yelp
Disappointed in the nut roll, nuts tasted like it was canned or from a jar, dough was ok, Prefer Oakmont Bakery and Grandma's in Gibsonia
google avatar

Moe E.

Yelp
I'm very sad with what happened today. They need to go back to elementary school so they can know how to treat a customer. They hung up on me and I been going there for a year. Last time for me here... the food is raven not near good always cold
google avatar

Shanna C.

Yelp
Came back for breakfast. If you want a good, simple diner breakfast (eggs/toast/bacon and coffee) this is the place for you. They also have frozen pierogies for sale, so I'll have to come back for those. The employees are great. All around I'm glad that Sharpsburg has Brother Tom's Bakery.

Elaine K.

Yelp
Had breakfast @ Brother Tom's which was very good. Staff was very friendly & efficient. Restaurant & restrooms very clean. Bought a poppy seed roll which reminded me of my mother's HOWEVER, needs more poppyseed filling. The lady lock was good quality. The chocolate gob was good also but icing had a frozen taste still very good.

Yelp
Yesterday, I stopped in to buy an Italian hoagie. We were thinking of getting these for a picnic that was planned over the weekend. The hoagie was $5.50 and had ham, hot ham, BOLOGNA, salami and provolone cheese on it. I asked the clerk where the tomato and lettuce was and he said I could purchase some for $1.00 EXTRA. Have you ever had an Italian hoagie without lettuce and tomato and what makes those condiments so expensive? Well, that is the last time you will see me in that bakery. We have had breakfast there and it was just OK. The bakery goods are not good except the brownies and they are not eye pleasing at all like Oakmont Bakery. It is a shame because the building is very nice and clean, but the management has no idea to run a restaurant or a bakery. Good luck Brother Tom!
google avatar

Tyler S.

Yelp
I stopped into Brother Toms for myself to try the Italian hoagie for myself. For me, the hoagie was perfect. Had just the right amount of meat and cheese. For $5.50, you can't beat that. The previous comment complained about the dollar up charge for condiments. I'm going to disagree and say that the extra dollar I spent was well worth the fresh tomatoes, onions, lettuce, Italian dressing, and mayonnaise I got straight from the kitchen to fill the 12 inch hoagie. After all. A tomato alone could cost up to 50 cents. A head of lettuce could be as much as a $1.50.

Yelp
I have had breakfast and lunch many time there and for a small family run place, it is excellent food and value.

Yelp
Breakfast is always good with lots of food for a small price compared to so many other places. Also good bakery.

Yelp
This bakery is a hidden gem located on the main drag in Sharpsburg. They serve breakfast and lunch, sell bakery items, frozen meals and deli meats. Upon entering the establishment I could see that it was clean and well maintained. Cozy booths and tables filled both sides of an expansive dining area. The interior has sort of a pizza shop feel. The guy behind the counter was the nephew of the owner (Brother Tom?) and he informed us that his Uncle was Polish. He also said that he has always loves eating his Uncles food because he "doesn't mess around". Lol The bakery had many items: cookies, pastries, rolls, breads, etc. All of which looked appealing. We bought some golden wheat bread which is apparently made from Tom's own recipe. My boyfriend had a stomach ache that day so he ended up making the bread into toast to feel better. He said that it tasted fresh and was very good. We also bought a nut roll which was excellent. My boyfriend bought two of Brother Tom's premade meals and they are in our freezer (pasta and kielbasa entrees) so we will see how those turn out. I'm confident that they will be very good. The guy behind the counter said that his Uncle often rotates the menu. We asked about stuffed cabbage and he said that he does make this but it sells quickly (boyfriend loves this dish so he was excited). They also had the traditional haluski on standby as a frozen entree. My only wish is that this darling business had healthier menu options. I am always trying to seek low fat, low carb options and there were very few items here that fit this description. However. If you want real Polish food, yummy baked goods, great service, and a clean/cozy dining/bakery/shopping experience - this is the place to go!

Kevin B.

Yelp
Awesome local deli and restaurant. There turkey club is one off the best I've had. There homemade soups are incredible. Price are very reasonable. It's a great place to grab lunch.

Carol H.

Yelp
You would be hard pressed to find a better cinnamon roll, either glazed or with frosting! Great soups, too, to eat in the restaurant or take home in frozen quarts. They have a good assortment of pierogies too. Worth stopping in.
