Brotherhood Winery is a craft winery that opened in Washingtonville, New York in 1839. It was founded by cobbler John Jaques. He began growing grapes in the backyard of his store as early as 1824. By 1835, he had established a sizable vineyard and began selling grapes in the New York City market. When the prices of grapes dropped, Jaques began making his own wine and produced his first vintage in 1839 under the name 'Blooming Grove Winery'. In 1858, ownership of the operation passed to his sons John Jr., Oren and Charles and it was renamed 'Jaques Brothers Winery'. Father and son wine merchants Jesse and Edward Emerson purchased the operation in 1886 and renamed it 'Brotherhood Winery'. They expanded the operation and built several additional buildings and underground vaults. Edward's partner Louis Farrell came on board in 1920 and the winery remained in the Farrell family until 1987. A new partnership has owned the winery since 2005 and the current winemaker is Bob Barrow. Brotherhood is America's oldest continuously-operating winery.
My wife and I recently visited Brotherhood Winery while we were celebrating our sixth anniversary in the Hudson Valley. Our visit coincided with the winery's annual Grape Stomp Festival, so the place was hopping! The winery was unlike anything we've ever seen. It was more of a winery campus with several buildings including a 6,000-square-foot banquet hall where a wedding was taking place. We first took a tour of the winery's various hand-dug underground cellars and vaults. It was a very impressive sight, especially all of the enormous wine barrels. I also enjoyed seeing all of the antique winemaking equipment on display. Our tour group later moved to the Chapel for tastings. Some of our favorites included the Carpe Diem, Homestyle White Sangria, CP Trivarietal Red, Icon Cabernet Sauvignon, Late Harvest, Ruby Port, and Holiday Spiced Wine. Really impressive facility and delicious wines! We were happy that we stopped by and hope to visit again in the future!
