Boston’s Best Coffee Shops | Eater Boston

"A bit hidden from the bustling Washington Street in Brookline Village, Brothers & Sisters Co. is home to not only coffee drinks and tasty sandwiches but also Jamie’s Ice Cream Co., another addition to owner Jamie Siracusa’s business ventures. The space is cozy and inviting, emanating a quintessential neighborhood cafe vibe with exposed brick walls, cushiony seating, and wooden tables and chairs." - Erika Adams

This place is adorable and so cozy! I managed to snag a seat indoors after a bit of waiting and would love to spend a good rainy WFH day here. There are very limited seats so plan accordingly if you’re hoping to stay. I was a bit disappointed by my drink - their specialty lemonade ran around $7 and was not memorable. But, I was able to get work done and enjoyed the playlist and company.

Google
This may be controversial but I believe they sell the best drip coffee in Boston. I’ve tried a lot of places over the past 2 months and by far the best that I’ve had was from here. It’s a small intimate coffee shop with indoor and outdoor seating. I’ve only tried the pistachio muffin which is a 10/10. I would definitely recommend trying this place if you’re looking for a good cup of coffee. Staff is nice and they do a lot given the amount of customers and limited space.

Google
Real matcha and soy, oat, or almond milk! It is SUPER tiny inside, and yet lots of people were busy working, so it’s a popular place! The pastries and cookies look phenomenal but I didn’t try. They have MEM tea, and this matcha is very genuine Japanese matcha. It tastes phenomenal. I love that they also have Peaflower lemonade and 10% discounts for those who bike in. There is parking right out front, and there is only one step to enter, BUT that one step is unusually high up. If you have trouble with steps, this might be a challenge for you. They also have Jamie’s ice cream, which is an ice cream shop just next door!

Google
Really nice atmosphere and cute place, but wasn’t that happy with the food. Coffee was okay, but my problem was with my mixed berry scone sadly. Pretty small, and so many berries that there wasn’t much actual scone, plus the moisture from them made it quite soggy. The real issue was a huge piece of mandarin that was right in the middle! Would maybe come back for the nice vibes and attempt another pastry, but not a must-try

Google
Love this place!! The Turmeric tea is wonderful. I give the croissants highest rating. So buttery without the burnt flavor that croissants sometimes have. The location is in a great neighborhood and fun to hang out in. Staff is really friendly!!

Google
Brothers & Sisters has really upped their sandwich game!!! The beach bum special is simple and delicious. The steak sandwich is also very yummy!!

Google
Wish you would offer FRESHLY BREWED FLAVORED COFFEES, like Hazelnut, French Vanilla, etc.. You'd absolutey make a killing (!) and stand out from the other local shops, as everyone else in town offers flavored coffees using the sweet, flavored syrups (yuck!). Trust me, start with just one or two flavors and test it out! :)

Google
It was my first time visiting here. The breakfast sandwich I ordered never got made. 30 min after seeing others get their sandwiches who ordered after me, I inquired about my order and they said the kitchen never got it. Maybe because I paid in cash? They refunded me, but I won’t be back.

Yelp
brothers & sisters is your tried and true go-to coffee shop! i love how supportive they are of small/independent businesses, they sell a variety of packaged goods, pastries, and ice cream along with their main drink menu! i'm a big fan of their tumeric latte with almond milk + their selection of teas offered both hot or iced! there's some seating inside but it can get pretty loud, so they have 4ish tables outside too if the weather is nice.

Yelp
Went here right as kitchen was closing-- got a wrapped sandwich and a pizza thing. Pizza was cold and very bready, not at all doughy. Sandwich was fun of the mill, nothing special but we were hungry. Place does not have enough seating, is pretty cramped and not that clean. My pizza touched the table at one point and I decided not to eat it... it probably would've been fine but the grease stains present upon arrival were not the most appetizing. Service was fine. I asked how much the pizza thing was, the worker said $4, I said I'll take it, she rang it up at $6 or 6 something, I decided to still eat it but it would've been nice to know.

Yelp
It's a very nice cute little cafe in Brookline. The interior is very nicely decorated and the ambiance is very welcoming . The servers are nice and very helpful and the service is quick. Sadly I did not like the bagel, which I believe was overpriced for the quality of it. I ordered an everything bagel and it did not look like one, legit seemed like a plain bagel I don't think they put enough seeds on it. I added cream cheese, which was not much, and an egg. It tasted okay, definitely better then the regular Dunkin' Donuts bagel but there are better bagel places in Boston.

Yelp
The ambiance here is perfect. My favorite kind of coffee shop for studying or reading. Seating is very limited and not super accessible. Staff is helpful and friendly. I really enjoyed my cold brew and the bagels are actually good bagels.
google avatar

Kelly J.

Yelp
Dirty chai latte definitely did not have espresso in it. The bagel however... THAT was fresh.

Yelp
Very cute coffee place, centrally located to the T. I don't drink coffee so I can't weigh in on the caffeinated options but I do love a good bagel sandwich. I went with the green egg and cheese on a plain bagel. Hailing from the land of excellent bagels, the bagel here was okay, but hard to judge the true quality of a bagel when it's been toasted. I liked the combo of spinach, eggs, and cheese, though wished the eggs were a tad fluffier - I'll try making this at home. We got out food pretty quickly despite the long line of people waiting. (With that said, I thought there could have been some better crowd control with the massive line in front - everyone was clumping together right in front of the door, which made getting in and out difficult.) The menu has a ton of other options, including avocado toast, grilled cheese, a variety of pastries, and cold sandwiches/salads. Jamie's ice cream is right next door - there's also a refrigerated section in Brothers & Sisters with pints. To no surprise, Saturday mornings are absolutely packed, but we didn't have to wait very long for a table to open up. They have some indoor seating as well as tables outside.

Yelp
Very cute shop with excellent breakfast sandwich's and coffee. The service is very quick and everyone was incredibly friendly. Keep in mind they have limited seating inside but they do have some outdoor seating available in the warmer months!
google avatar

Lili A.

Yelp
The ambiance of the coffee shop was great, but the matcha I got was grainy and not strong :( I will say that their coffee and lattes are much better than their matches.
google avatar

Yelp
this is the coziest coffee shop i have ever been into, i absolutely love it. my blueberry vanilla latte was lovely and the green egg and cheese bagel was good! great vibe to start the day

Yelp
Lovely spot with a cozy atmosphere and friendly service. There's not too much space when it comes to seating and it can get a bit packed trying to maneuver around. I've only sat at the larger tables that are the first to greet you, and had a pleasant experience working on my laptop, as there are outlets to plug into. There was a number of people on their laptops while I was there, as well as people just having a chat. The pastries are delicious, but the iced chai I ordered tasted a bit watered down. Regardless, I'd be open to coming back and trying a different drink. There's a bathroom within the building, but you have to exit through a door inside the cafe, and wander down a corridor to find it. There's a code to enter, but most of the time the door is open unless it's in use.

Yelp
Oh my goodness, this is the cutest coffee shop that I've been in in a long time! Quick service, kind staff, and delicious coffee (I got an iced Americano) all make this spot the perfect place to stop while exploring Brookline! While I didn't get any food, they have a really nice assortment of breakfast sandwiches and baked goods that all looked tasty. There were a number of different sized tables with people hard at work and it was definitely quiet enough to be productive. I look forward to coming back during my next trip to Boston!
google avatar

Nicole L.

Yelp
Very cute spot with nice coffee. They currently have atomic blend and my husband enjoyed cold brew and iced americano. There is both indoor and outdoor seating. Pastries are from Iggy's and they make their own muffins and scones (although the brown sugar cinnamon one I tried was dry).
google avatar

Yelp
Would recommend their power breakfast sandwich on sesame bagel, it's delicious and filling. Coffee drinks are good as well. Seating is limited and usually tables are full, but they have small outdoor tables for when the weather is nice. Staff is usually friendly, and service is efficient.
google avatar

Yelp
Really cute coffee shop in Brookline! I got their fall Salted Carmel Latte. And I enjoyed how I was able to taste the saltiness as well as the sweetness. After a few sips, the drink was on the sweeter side. So I would recommend adding something to balance it out. There was a cute little seating area within the cafe. I would definitely come here again.

Yelp
It's been a while since I've been back at Brothers & Sisters (and its predecessor), but this morning I stopped by to grab a hot drink and sit for a bit. I got a hot chai latte with almond milk, which was nicely spiced and only slightly sweetened - on point for me. They make their own concentrate from the local Mem Tea's chai masala blend. I didn't grab a pastry, but I appreciated seeing the gluten free bars in separate containers. Next time! The interior has freshened up since the old days, but the seating area is still small. They put in a couple larger tables alongside some tiny ones, but it was a squeeze to get past all the occupied chairs. Some people were there with laptops, so spots filled up quickly with slow turnover. I'm glad to see this locally owned shop has weathered the pandemic as an alternative to the chain coffee shops nearby. I'll be back!

Yelp
I often meet a friend here for coffee. It's small and quaint, though getting a table can be a challenge. I personally enjoy their iced mochas. The bathroom is located in the adjacent building down a hallway. It can get noisy, so if you prefer a quiet atmosphere, this might not be the best place for you.

Hui Jin S.

Yelp
i loved the ambiance and the bagels were really good. the ingredients were fresh and the food was great.

Yelp
Delicious coffee. Great neighborhood location. Cute as can be with a nice searing area. Wednesdays bring your cup for a freebie. Very friendly staff.

Yelp
I've tried this place a handful of times out of desperation--not desperate for caffeine, no no, desperate to find an independent coffee shop in Boston/Brookline that is both cute and doesn't serve mediocre coffee...harder than one might think. Each time I get a drink here, I tell myself they must be having a bad day. I think I need to start practicing radical honesty. The other day I got an iced americano that tasted like what you might imagine a coffee la croix would taste like -- it was as if they didn't put any actual espresso in there, but instead just let a coffee bean waft its flavor into my cup. The color looked like what you get when you clean out your espresso machine. I once again beg the question: Why open a coffee shop if you don't know how to make good coffee? I guess it's working out for them based on the other reviews. Needless to say, my dalliance with this establishment has come to an end. On a positive note, they do make some killer ice cream.

Yelp
Cute and cozy spot! Some seating indoor and outdoor. The also sell ice cream. I ordered a French Toast Latte on the seasonal menu. It was good but did not taste like French toast.

Yelp
Loved my visit to brothers and sisters, I was so impressed by their shop. The selection of goodies was generous and tasty including some delightful gluten free snack bars at the counter. Shaped like hearts they made my heart happy too. Happy they served Oatly oatmilk and I was able to get a matcha and turmeric tea latte that were both well balanced and delicious. The vibe was very friendly, farmhouse style, and thoughtful. Seeking my next chance to return!

Yelp
Great place. Great atmosphere. Great food. Great people. The Google menu and Yelp menu are out of date. Look at the photos for updates.

Yelp
i stopped by this cafe spontaneously before work and got a sandwich (~$10) for breakfast. it was delicious and wish i had gotten an iced latte too. the cafe is super cute with just a few tables. the servers are super friendly and welcoming. we waited about 5-10 minutes for the sandwich to be prepared, but it wasn't too busy. there's street parking nearby and right next to the brookline village t stop. i'll definitely be back to try their drinks! overall rating: 9/10
google avatar

Yelp
Got the power breakfast sandwich with ham on an everything bagel sandwich and a honey pistachio coffee for breakfast. Busy as soon as 8am rolled around. Line formed and it was packed in there. Drink was quickly made but the my brekkie took awhile to be made. Nonetheless, it was delicious and I would definitely come back just not when I'm in a rush.

Yelp
Super nice people. Very pleasant place to sip some coffee and crank out some emails. I loved the cafe au lait. The pastry was pedestrian though. Still beats the big chains hands down. I shall be back.
google avatar

Angela P.

Yelp
Such a cute spot in Brookline Village! Cozy and has good food. I do wish they had more seating and more pastry options sometimes! Staff has always been kind and there's a lot of street parking around always. I also appreciate that they're open a little later than most other cafes!
google avatar

Josh K.

Yelp
i never get the best vibes from the employee tbh... coffee is good, sandwiches are hit or miss and the portion is usually disappointing. interior is great and love the outdoor seating.
google avatar

Cameron K.

Yelp
The green egg sandwich I mean....‼The sticky bun!!!!!!!! The London Fog sheesh! You gotta go to this local coffee haunt hang space. The service is also super nice, friendly and chill. The whole experience is right on. Just what you want to wake up for.

Yelp
Great service cozy ambiance nice baked goods from iggy's and onsite . Excellent for meetups writing reading studying !

Yelp
Nice coffee shop in the Boston area. Was visiting for work (from Chicago). No joke I was on Google/Yelp researching coffee shops for like 30 minutes. Thankfully, was not disappointed with this place. Vibes were great and baristas were friendly. Got a classic Iced Vanilla Latte and tasted pretty good. Wish it was a little stronger and darker. YES there is Wifi but for some reason the day I went it was super spotty (internet tech was onsite too lol). Couldn't get much work done due to this. There is Parking in the area but they're all metered. Not bad if you want to stay here for a couple hours! 4.2/5.0

Yelp
Amazing bagels and great coffee! The bagels were some of the best I have eaten! Service was fantastic!

Monica T.

Yelp
My favorite cafe since I moved to brookline! Staff is so kind and the espresso drinks are reliably great. Also have a fun assortment of baked goods everyday and a solid food menu.
google avatar

Ella F.

Yelp
oh boy, there goes all my hopes to limit spending money on caffeine... the iced oat milk matcha I ordered was divine and I'm already dreaming about the next one. alternative milk is only 75 cents more and they carry oat, almond, and soy (in addition to the regular dairy options). in my opinion, the matcha is perfect as is and does not need any sweetener or flavored syrups. the barista was very friendly and had a great playlist running over the speakers (like, tracy chapman kind of great). it's a super cute space, although there's not a ton of seating inside. the smallish space is cozy, warmly lit, adorned with simple artwork, and welcoming overall. definitely looking forward to my next visit!

Yelp
Visited this past Saturday for the first time. Service was insanely slow. There were 6 people ahead of me and I waited close to 20 minutes to place an order for 3 small iced coffees. Didn't even get those after waiting all that time! They just ran out and offered me iced cold brew instead. First world problem I know but if I'm going to wait this long I should at the very least get what I came there for. They shouldn't be running out of iced coffee. Also, it would have been nice if the man at the register acknowledged that we were waiting, "sorry for the wait...". Also, the employees need to take ownership of the line and direct people where to stand bc the space is small, the door is too big and is in a bad location. Do better. It shouldn't take 20 mins in line to get a coffee with only 6 people ahead of me and you shouldn't be running out of iced coffee. Do some sales forecasting and plan ahead to make sure you have enough iced coffee to meet the expected # of patrons. This isn't rocket science!

Yelp
Terrible chai and coffee. Great apple cider and cute atmosphere. Aside from being cute their drinks are nothing special and some are just terrible.

Annika P.

Yelp
Pretty good matcha, a little clumpy though! The outdoor seating was pretty serene and there was a decent amount of open tables both inside and outside! Will be returning to get work done one day

Elle P.

Yelp
This is a very cute little busy cafe. Their coffee is great and baristas are quick. I enjoyed my oatmeal cappuccino. They also have a good assortment of painters on display and ready to go. However, if you want anything to eat beyond the displayed pastries, make sure you allow enough time. There are people who preorder, so don't let a short line fool you - it took over 20 minutes for my bagel to come out. They have some indoor and outdoor seating. Most of indoor seating is occupied by people working on their laptops.

Andrea V.

Yelp
Today I tried this for the first time and last..... I ordered an americano coffee and avocado/cheddar sandwich for $18.46 ! not even mentioning I had to return the coffee twice because it was wrong.
google avatar

Yelp
i want a full refund for the mid coffee i had to pay $8.22 for i am thoroughly sad now

Yelp
A Brookline favorite. I had never heard of this shop and came by to try some of their breakfast options. Given its size, I wasn't expecting a seating area inside but there was! It's a snug, little alcove with cozy lighting and limited seating options, though there are tables outside as well. We ordered a couple of breakfast sandwiches to eat outside. It took a while for them to be made, but it was understandably busy. The staff was still friendly! I ordered the power breakfast sandwich and it was good and filling, although it wasn't particularly memorable. I wish I could have tasted more of the caramelized onions or dijon sauce. I will have to come again to try the coffee and sit inside. I will say I think the community fridge outside is a unique and respectable choice!
google avatar

Franklin Z.

Yelp
This place is such a gem!! I probably wouldn't have discovered it had I not lived in Brookline, but I really shouldn't have gone about it that way. The employees are very nice and friendly, always attempting to bring some positivity into their customers' days and asking how their days have been. They specialize in coffee and ice cream and having tried both, I can truly vouch that both are quality!! The ice cream is homemade and the cookies flavored one (like cookies n' cream) ice cream is my personal favorite! I finished it so fast that it was gone by before I even got home. The interiors of the Cafe also appears cute and cozy and can't wait to enjoy it after the COVID era.
google avatar

Nikita S.

Yelp
I recently discovered this cafe, and wish I had sooner!! I've only been here during the COVID era, so can't speak to their 'normal' operations, but have had several great take-out experiences. I have both ordered at their takeout window and ahead, and both methods have resulted in patient, thorough service!! They talked me through multiple coffee options and took my payment on the phone when I called, so I just drove up and grabbed my order. Their green eggs & cheese bagel is delicious (I got it on sourdough bread once too, also delicious), and their coffee and lattes are very tasty. The iced turmeric latte was a true highlight for me! Will definitely be back and hoping to visit them in a post-covid era as well
google avatar

Sheridan R.

Yelp
Cute coffee shop to work in! Sometimes hard to find a seat. Good tea. Food is not bad. The staff are very friendly.
google avatar

Della S.

Yelp
This place is probably a good representation of a "hole in the wall." Think very limited seating and a front door which might whack people standing in line if you don't open it carefully. The seating area is pretty small with very few tables and almost no space in between the tables. It's pretty difficult to find a spot to sit because customers tend to stay a long time (with laptops/books/etc. If you're looking for a place to do work, there is Starbucks and Caffe Nero nearby with more seating). The baristas and servers are really nice! And the menu is awesome because they have sandwiches and breakfast food in addition to pastries on display. Many of their breakfast options come with a cup of coffee which is a good deal. I tried the egg and cheese bagel. They give you the option of choosing any of their breads/toasts for the sandwich in addition to their bagels. It featured a Dijon sauce but the flavor didn't really come through. If you aren't claustrophobic, then this is a great place to check out. Otherwise, take your order to go!
google avatar

Catherine N.

Yelp
Dropped by to try the new Jamie's Ice Cream and it was so good! The pistachio cake had a deep pistachio flavor and light mouthfeel, while still having the right amount of creamy richness. Will be back again to try the unique flavor offerings!
google avatar

Charlotte C.

Yelp
Really enjoy their coffee. It is a small coffee shop In Brookline. It is super cute and easy to find. I was surprised how big it is inside. There's plenty of places to eat, read or study. The coffee is delicious especially their iced coffee. Highly recommend it! They also have some art work there which is nice.

Anna R.

Yelp
Very small place and little seating. Waited a long time for our food and most of it was burnt / the wrong order. My sister ordered a pesto panini that came with red peppers and caramelized onions (literally one of each) and no pesto at all. The bagels were burnt and thin and I asked for tomato and they did not add any. Even the ice cream place next door that is connected to brothers and sisters gave us pistachio when we asked for Java chip.
google avatar

Surrie J.

Yelp
Love the ambiance and the food here, but the service is so slow. I've ordered online 30 minutes prior to showing up and the bagel I ordered was still cooking...not sure if it's a staffing issue or an organizational thing, but every time I order food it takes way longer than expected.
google avatar

Alexandra M.

Yelp
pre covid review: Under the new ownership, the menu here has gotten more vegetarian friendly and was better than what I had as kookoo cafe. I've had their mozzarella tomato and pesto sandwich which was on a sturdy loaf and an avocado and swiss on cibbata and both were great. Service is a bit slow, and I could see everyone standing in the back just talking as myself and another waited.
