Where to Eat Crispy Fried Chicken in New Orleans

"Gas station fried chicken is kind of Louisiana’s thing — man stations in the greater New Orleans area have chicken that would rival any found at sit-down restaurants. And Brother’s is known for having the best of the best, which is probably why there’s more than 30 locations across the metro area. The Carondelet shop, while not a gas station, is one of Brothers’ best locations for crunchy, not-greasy pieces, as is the gas station in New Orleans East on Crowder." - Beth D'Addono, Eater Staff

Yelp
Needed some FOOD after Jazz fest Friday night and I asked the valet attendant where to go. He pointed down the block and just said "go get you some brothers chicken". Yes, sir! Staff was friendly and the chicken hot. Fries with seasoning were tasty and a perfect kick. I got a three piece dark meat. Not expensive or overly busy. Perfect late night meal.

Yelp
This gas station chicken is delicious. This convenience store was located about 2 blocks from our stay in the Central Business District. It was open late. We ventured here two times during our stay. Both times we got the 6 piece tenders meal which came with fries for $12.99. Never disappointed or hungover the next day. This place be hopping. So prepare to wait in line and enjoy the entertainment (customers). My husband didn't know you could get good food at the gas sation. He is a convert and will never talk crap about gas station chicken down south again.

Yelp
I saw this place walking, and knew that I couldn't leave the city without trying some real Southern fried chicken. After I got comfortable at my hotel, I went and got plenty of chicken and steak fries and it was cool to get it all inside a convenience store. The chicken was perfectly crispy and filled with flavor. The fries were bomb and I was happy to get plenty of ketchup to savor the massive amount that they gave me. With all of that and lemonade, I chose the right dinner to end an epic weekend in The Big Easy.

Yelp
Definitely recommend their fried chicken. Didn't know what to expect from a corner store with fried chicken inside... but it was delicious! We were only in town for a few days, but I picked up chicken twice it was so good!

Vee G.

Yelp
If you want something cheap and good, this is your place. I would not think to buy chicken out of a local corner market store but I did. I tried it based on the Yelp reviews. The chicken is seasoned and cooked perfectly. The meat pies are similar to a beef patty but slightly different. The boudin balls are tasty too.

Yelp
Amazingly the best fried chicken we have had in awhile. We went for water and milk but the smell of fried chicken made us think twice about skipping our lunch that day. Fresh, hot, and crispy! So tender. I am sold. It's to go only but we will be back for sure.

Yelp
Wouldn't have thought that fried chicken in a liquors store would be so good! The crispiness & flavor was spot on! There is nowhere to sit, so you'll have to take it to eat back at your hotel. I like the fact that this location is not on the Bourbon street side of Canal Street. It's a busy place, but it moves fast.

Yelp
Mixed 8pc with seasoned fries. Wow this place is amazing. Follow your heart and make sure you come here with an open mind and you understand that timing is everything and the scale of freshness flows along with it. Amazing fried chicken price is good too especially after the soul crushing prices on bourbon street come here for some great post bourbon food. Beware that the quality depends on timing. If you happen to pop in when the chicken just came out the fryer you're in for an amazing meal.

Yelp
Just what we needed during a heavy night of drinking. Our best friends were staying across the street from Brothers. We had been at the bar for at least 2 hours. We needed to put some grease in our bodies. So, my bestie and I went across the street to Brothers. When we walked in the chicken person was just pulling it out of the fryer. We got a 16 piece of legs and thighs and proceeded back across the street. We sat at the bar and opened this box of goodness and just smiled. The aroma was outstanding. We gave the bartender a couple of pieces, and we all went hog wild over this chicken. I will say that a convenience store in NOLA is like no other. You can get your chicken, liquor, phone charger, etc. at most. It's a wonderful experience. We are now addicted to this wonderful chicken. We will be back.

Yelp
This is a must have when you come to New Orleans. Its a corner store convenience store that has a little bit of everything. We ordered the chicken with season fries and it was to die for. The chicken was so crunchy and the fires were seasoned nicely. Only thing I would recommend is to tell them to go a little light on the season for the fries because it was a bit overwhelming. The service was quick. We were in and out within minutes. I will absolutely be coming back here next time I'm in New Orleans ..

Yelp
We were staying across the street and walked past Brothers on our way back to our hotel after a night out. It just looks like your typical corner mart but the line was out the door for their fried chicken even at 3am! We decided to check it out and ended up coming back pretty much every night of our stay in New Orleans! The chicken pieces are crispy, juicy, and perfectly seasoned. It's probably some of the best fried chicken I've ever had, granted I was drunk every time I had it. Very reasonably priced too for the amount you get. Chicken aside, Brothers has all your typical convenience store offerings, and we ended up stopping by multiple times to pick up water and other beverages for our hotel room. Highly recommend all fried chicken lovers in the area to stop by for some affordable, tasty chicken!

Yelp
I'm sure this place is great when the food is hot and fresh, but it seems when it's not everything else is an afterthought. The fries were an absolute zero, the chicken was crispy and flavorful but not amazing. I would give them another chance but would prefer the food to be more fresh.
google avatar

Yelp
Going to Brothers food mart is now my late night tradition after hanging out. It is not the healthiest nor the best tasting but it's the best value and very tasty. The chicken's crispy crust is hard and crunchy, well seasoned meat, and moderately juicy. The expectation isn't high so I'm always surprised at how good it is. Will probably be back tomorrow night.

Yelp
This isnt the worse chicken we've had, but it definitely isnt worth a repeat visit. I should've listened to my gut when it said "dont!" After reading all the positive reviews from DRUNK people lol... the legs were dry, which dark meat is typically juicy. There wasn't enough seasoning/flavor on the batter and it definitely didnt seep into the chicken. we did get 3 chicken strips and those were juicy, which is why we gave two stars. Skip this place.

Yelp
So when you find yourself wandering the streets of New Orleans in the middle of the night drunken and disheveled from the days revelry and you crave a good snack you know what you should do? You should find a Brothers Food Mart. You know why? Because crispy fried chicken is just what the body needs to absorb all those drinks and this was some really good fried chicken. I was drunk when I ate it so there are no pics but just trust me lol. Proof, I think it was 2am when we went and the place was still packed. Luckily for us this location was just up the street from our hotel but they have several locations.
google avatar

Megana V.

Yelp
Brothers was recommended as a local place to get cheap fried chicken that was tasty. For the price point it was pretty good. The dark meat was decently juicy, not the most juicy but not dry either, the outside remained crispy. Not bad given that each piece was ~$2.

Yelp
VERY DISAPPOINTED!!! Came here based on all the good reviews. I'm sure the food is great when it's hot and fresh, but what I got was barely room temp and had obviously been sitting out a long time (at least an hour or more). Since it was 6pm, I expected everything to be freshly made for dinner time customers, but nope :( My chicken was so-so after warming it up in the microwave, but the fries and jalapeño poppers were dry, chewy, tough and completely inedible after putting in the microwave for only 30-secs. *sigh* Also, they didn't include (or offer) any condiments :( no ketchup, ranch, nothing! DO NOT expect all of the menu items you see here from other peoples posts to be available. Oct 2022 they don't have Cajun rice, mashed potatoes, or po'boys. I had also planned to purchase some sodas and water, because a couple folks had mentioned in their reviews that this place was cheaper than Walgreen's and CVS, unfortunately that's NOT TRUE. The best thing I can say about my experience is that the guys working behind the counter were nice and the store has a good variety of snacks and beverages... and they have lottery.

Yelp
The chicken here is so good and priced great. Whenever I am starting in this city I buy a box of chicken for the room. Really comes in handy if you come home late at night and need some grub. Also good fresh of course. Lines can be long but move fast.

Yelp
While eating through a list of fried chicken spots in NOLA, this food mart popped up. While most people would be hesitant, some of the best fried chicken I've had were in a place just like this! Ordering was a bit difficult because there seemed to be a language barrier with the staff that was helping me out, but I managed with finger pointing and head nods. I got the 3 piece mixed box with 3 Boudin balls. The fried chicken was okay.. definitely gave me some of the older pieces.. boudin balls were great! I'd probably skip this place unless you're hungry and in the vicinity.
google avatar

Jin Z.

Yelp
Good late night spot, cheap. 30 dollars can feed 8 drunk people. Taste good. Open late as hell.
google avatar

Ultima M.

Yelp
We were told this is a must try spot for some good fried chicken. Located inside a liquor store... Chicken was good, price is reasonable. Experience is priceless LOL
google avatar

K A.

Yelp
I only stop to get chicken here, because all over there box's was trash on the streets, so I figure if so many box's where on the streets, they should be okay and it was it was about 10 pm. I got the 6 tender and fries only because this was all they where serving on Fat Tuesday, chicken and fries. Lines long and chicken hot. Portion size great, chicken tender big and seem like more than 6 pieces he stuff the box full of fries and chicken $12. And we could not eat it all we ate and went to sleep. It was season good and crispy and fries where hot as well. They have steak fries. Good place to grab a snack and keep it moving. The store also sold liquor and fountain drinks, it's a corner store

Yelp
Off the chain piping hot! Tucked away treasure for tourists! I happen to see a line of people at the store. I inquired to investigate. They said fried chicken. OMG. I'm a chicken fanatic and was in hog/chicken heaven! I'll definitely go back again!
google avatar

Michelle J.

Yelp
Communication can be a challenge with a language barrier, but this is about the best chicken one could expect from a convenience store! Fries are just ok, but the chicken more than makes up for it!

Chris C.

Yelp
I make it point to stop by and enjoy some of their fried chicken, every time I'm in New Orleans! Always hot'n'ready, packed with flavor and VERY reasonably priced, Brothers Chicken always hits the spot!

Yelp
This was the first place we went to upon our landing in New Orleans. We were starving and my best friend swore this place had the best chicken. I wasn't expecting a regular corner store but I was open to trying out. The chicken was definitely worth it and hits the spot for a late night snack. The cook gave us the mean mug face but we felt it was our greeting to the neighborhood. He was also kind enough to drop some fresh chicken at my request, so win-win. Definitely check this place out on your next New Orleans visit.

Yelp
So my wife had been to New Orleans twice before me and she always talked about the best fried chicken she ever had. Well, I finally made my way to the NO, so I had to try it out for myself. I didn't really know what to expect. But when I saw the set up, I knew it was gonna be good. We visited Brothers twice while we were in New Orleans, once during the day and once at night. During the day was a much better experience. No one was there and we were able to get what we wanted and leave. At night, it was a line. Literally a line like it was a nightclub. In fact, So much like a nightclub that there was a security guard on the outside letting people in a few at a time. The fried chicken is AMAZING. I've had lots of different fried chicken in my life, so it's hard for me to tell you what's been the best, but Brothers is definitely up there. Every piece was juicy. Even the white meat. I also tried a beef patty and it was BUSSIN! Even though they sell fried chicken, it's also a regular convenience store with snacks, drinks, etc. Overall, BROTHERS IS A MUST! Check them out!
google avatar

Genevieve F.

Yelp
Honestly, only so-so. First, it's fairly overlooked and not flavored enough. The crust and chicken skin was hard and chewy, Second, even though the wings were listed at. $1.79 and the legs at $1,99, they tried to stick me for mixed at $4.99. I argued and won but it was stupid. I did prevail by haggling over my $1.00 though. I'm not drunk, just out late and you can't rip me off that easily. Beware of their math here.
google avatar

Yelp
Food was great for a quick meal on the go! Not the best fried chicken that I've ever had but for the price and how fast the service was I was very pleased
google avatar

Hank M.

Yelp
Stopped in here after a concert at about 2am. The line was insane and i had to wait outside for about an hour. While it's a great option because there aren't a ton of options at that time the food isn't very good. The place also smelled pretty bad.
google avatar

Prcarlita C.

Yelp
Leaving bourbon street at 4am nothing else was open that we knew of and this was perfect. Definitely good chicken!
google avatar

D P.

Yelp
Sorry I didn't take a photo but the fried chicken here is awesome! Better than Popeyes IMHO.
google avatar

Corinne H.

Yelp
Need fried chicken at 2am... they got you. The fried chicken was great, the customers in line great, the service... well it sucks at 2 am like they are annoyed you're there and want to go home and not be bothered. I'd totally go back for the chicken though lol
google avatar

Jason M.

Yelp
As they were scooping my chicken and fries (quiches seemed to have been sitting for ages) into a box, I really thought I was going to regret going there... but the chicken is moist and flavorful!! Fries are a pass though. But great quick meal.
google avatar

Lydia K.

Yelp
I came to this mart strictly for the fried chicken. It's reasonably priced, delicious and held well the next day. We made a stop here before our flight to take some home as well.
google avatar

Yelp
cheap, authentic fried chicken..yep! we are visiting NOLA and a friend said brothers had the best fried chicken. not to mention, not overpriced like some restaurants that offer 2 pieces for $15. i'd say it lived up to our expectations! food: - 8 piece mixed (4/5) we got the mixed to split between two of us. the wings are small but the breasts are huuge. we were stuffed after 3 pieces each and ate the remaining for breakfast the next day lol.. the chicken here is crispy and not too bready or oily which we were pleasantly surprised with since it's a convenience store - large fries (3/5) these were okay. they put some seasoning on them but weren't that crispy or fresh ambiance/service: this is a convenience store so there's no seating of course. we brought our food back to our hotel as there's nowhere around the store to eat either. TLDR; yummy! wish it didn't sit there under a lamp though--the fries didn't taste fresh. also the breasts were almost too big so they didn't have as much skin. we would skip on the fries but come back for the fried chicken!

Yelp
After many years of fanboying over their late night fried chicken, it seems that life has been good for the Brothers biz. Their influence has resulted in rapid expansion, ballooning up to over 30 additional locations all throughout Louisiana at the time of this review. Since you never forget your first (#1), this location will forever hold a special place in my glutton heart. Obviously a lot has changed over the years. The place is most definitely cleaner and brighter than it's ever been. To some degree, the food has been refined, resulting in crispier chicken and meat pies have nearly become just as popular. There was a time when the chicken inventory was slim pickins in the wee hours, but now it's plentiful throughout the entire day / night. With success comes higher prices (#2), but compared to similar spots, Brothers is still quite affordable. A 25 piece will run one about $22 and the associates here do a good job of picking out potentially juicy ones. I always recommend a good mix of white and dark meat, but that's just me. Individual piece choices are always a nice thing, and the drum sticks are hard to beat. To many more years of success, late nights, and tasty fried chicken! _____________ (#1) Oh. It was so good. (#2) As well as a little something called *The Pandemic*
google avatar

Naveen K.

Yelp
Food was not up to par. We first tried this spot 2 years back and the taste has definitely changed. They are also stingy with giving any BBQ sauce. Like come on we just bought a 16 pc mix bucket. They didn't want to give any BBQ sauce. I recommended this place to my friends and now I regret it. Don't come here.
google avatar

Monica Y.

Yelp
Late night eats Security They have everything! It's a convenience store that serves chicken!!! Oh and if you need some liquor and snacks, they have that too!

M D.

Yelp
Hell yes. Exactly what we're looking for at 3am. There's always a wait but that's what makes it a reason to do it.

Karina L.

Yelp
Open late night and the chicken is bomb. Good food, good price, and the workers are super sweet. Place is convenient to all the hotels. It's a lil store too so we picked up some drinks.
google avatar

Lare M.

Yelp
The employees that were working were so rude as if I were bothering them. The chicken was crispy, not as tasty as other reviews perhaps it wasn't a fresh batch combined with the horrible customer service.
google avatar

C L.

Yelp
If you are hungry for fried chicken at 7 am or late night then it's worth a trip. They offer the choice of dark meat, white meat, or mix. You get a better chicken price if you buy more pieces. The fried chickens are actually decent but the staff that work there are completely clueless. I went there twice & they got my order wrong both times. One time I ordered 8 pieces of dark meat but they tried to charge me for 2 separate orders of 4 pieces which cost more. It took a little of explaining and eventually they got the price corrected. The next time I went, (different staff), I ordered 8 pieces of dark meat again but this time the Pakistani tried to charge me at the 1 piece price x 8 pieces. I spoke up and the other guy at the counter had no idea the difference between white meat vs dark meat so I basically ended up leaving with an 8 piece mix. If you go to this chicken location, make sure you are charged correctly before paying. Good fried chicken but clueless staff.
google avatar

Alicia C.

Yelp
The best fried chicken you'll eat in your life. I'd go back to NOLA just for this fried chicken. Go get you some. The price is right.
google avatar

Jon G.

Yelp
Dirty. Blatantly ignoring folks in line to buy chicken. Will not be back. Need 12 more characters to post, but that's not their fault.
google avatar

Mai L.

Yelp
Came here after having some drinks on Bourbon str The chicken is actually really good Ordered an 8pc dark meat ($9) and the chicken was hot, fresh and juicy! It was well seasoned throughout and full of spices and flavor. Yum! You wouldn't think that you'd find such great fried chicken at a convenience store, but you'd be wrong!
google avatar

Nevin H.

Yelp
It is what it is. I was very apprehensive to try their chicken because this is just like a mini mart you would find anywhere, but I went over to the counter and looked at it and it looked OK. I ended up getting some and have to tell you that it was damn good fried chicken. It was not expensive but it was damn good fried chicken. My only problem was they gave hot sauces and little condiment packages that were not easy to open especially with greasy fingers and they were out of bottles of hot sauce in the retail section. I am a complete lover of fried chicken and have my favorite spots around the country but now I could say that I will definitely go back for theirs if I see them and the time is right. Thank you for the surprise!

Malesha W.

Yelp
Everything you need in one place! They have some good fried chicken at all hours, they sell liquor, tobacco, chases, even Tshirts!

Joe C.

Yelp
Place wasn't the cleanest but the fried chicken was delicious. I went on a Saturday and the line was too long to wait but I returned on Monday and there was no line. The fries were seasoned so well no ketchup was needed. And that says a lot because I lovvvve ketchup!
