Modest counter serve with Caribbean-style pastries, plus traditional mains like roti & oxtail.
"Walk into this Trini bakery around noon and you may find that the rest of the neighborhood has beaten you to all the flaky beef patties in the display case. Don't let this happen. If it does, have no fear—Brown Sugar also makes great, thin-crusted chicken curry patties as well as slightly sweet coconut rolls. Stop in when you want saltfish for breakfast, or on a Saturday for weekend-only doubles and curry goat platters with cabbage." - candis mclean

"Veggie Roti and Mac and Cheese “Mac and cheese is just in my blood. It's my favorite food of all time. [I’m a] West Philly kid, Upper Darby kid, and a Delco kid. I spent a lot of time going to Brown Sugar. It's Black cuisine, Jamaican cuisine. Just the way that they just cook it with love…it's family-ordered, family-ran. The veggie roti, that's probably the best veggie roti in the city, in my opinion. It's good for you and tastes good. It's cooked well. It's just one of one of those cornerstones of West Philly.”—Yesseh Furaha-Ali" - candis mclean

The food is comforting enough to have you searching for a couch, but it's also fun to sit here and eat. The cook/owner might leave the kitchen just to hand you a utensil, and a stranger in line may give you a book they’re done reading. (Both of these things happened to us.) Whether you’re taking everything to go or hanging out for 30 minutes, there are plenty of photos of soca VIPs on the wall to keep you occupied while you wait for your order." - Candis R. McLean
