"Downtown Washington is packed with old brick buildings that now house small businesses, and this bakery is a beauty, from the ornate brickwork outside to the bakery cases inside. Owner Rachel Midgette works with local farmers and a French eye to turn out pastries, croissants, and scones (sweet and savory), bars, and cookies. Don’t miss: The pecan butter croissant and the granola bars. Coffee is from a North Carolina favorite, Counter Culture." - Kathleen Purvis

While celebrating our anniversary my husband and I stopped by spur of the moment and requested a small cake for 2. Without hesitation we were told to come back the next day and it would be ready. As promised it was available and beautiful the next morning. We couldn't wait to taste it but almost hated to destroy the perfect decoration! This was the best cake either one of us had ever eaten! Sweet and moist and decadent! Everything a cake should be! I am hooked and will be forever grateful for such a wonderful and memorable experience!

Stopped in with orders from my wife to bring home donuts while I was traveling for work. This stop did not disappoint. Stopped in for a dozen assorted donuts and ended up talking with the owner for a half hour. I love the negative reviews citing rudeness. You get what you give. Best donuts I’ve had in twenty years in this state.

Exceptional pastries. We've been here twice, The breakfast quiche and puff pastry with sausage is delicious, and filling for two. The Long John's eclair's and apple fritters are perfect. The cinnamon roll made with puff pastry was the best I have ever had. Just the right amount of glaze light tender and not at all greasy. I am about to enjoy their yeast raised cinnamon roll, and we'll get back to you if it's anything less than Stellar!

Google
Their cinnamon glazed pastry was perfection (I can't remember what it was called). I seriously have never had a fritter type pastry that is this good. It was also huge and my wife and I shared it, and are going to share the eclair later. I am looking forward to going back and trying the cream cake and tiramisu, and their other donut selections, and cinnamon rolls. They also had individual quiche on offer and a variety of cookies and brownies. The coffee was good but a little week for my taste. As for atmosphere, there aren't any ferns or funky artwork, but if you're looking for great pastry this is the place.

We have been getting delicious sweets from Greg and his family at Brownie Bakery for 20 years and have always been fantastic and delicious. Yummy cake squares, big uglys, brownies and doughnuts. Kudos to Greg and his service to the Washington community. Bryan and Lou Anne Dunn

Absolutely delicious. Stop in early so you don’t miss out on the best goodies. You won’t be disappointed.

We were in little Washington for a girls trip for the weekend and our first stop was at this brownie bakery we were greeted by the owner who was very rude. My friend asked him if they baked all their deserts which set him off like a bomb. Not sure how he has stayed in business so long with that kind of attitude. The desert was good but NOT good enough for me to ever return! There are other bakeries downtown on Main Street that are worth and deserve your business.

Google
Rating solely based on the donuts since that is all we got. Delicious! Fluffy, light, and melt in your mouth. The chocolate glaze was great. Would love to try out more!

Yelp
The owner is kind and talked about his coffee passionately. The donuts are good. But I keep going back for the service and coffee.

Jeff L.

Yelp
Excellent pasties and the only place in for fresh donuts- get there early because they sell out quickly.

Tim R.

Yelp
Bought a large sheet cake for my daughters birthday party. When we cut it, the center of the cake had "sunk", so instead of making another cake, they filled the crater with a ton of icing! When I told the owner, (thinking he would want to know) I was met with a ill tempered response, in short; " I don't give a crap." attitude. This was 17 yrs ago and haven't been back since not have I ever recommended them. Never will. Heard from others about his attitude as well.

Ana J.

Yelp
The owner is extremely rude. I mean EXTREMELY rude. If I wasn't in a pinch and had to buy a dozen donuts I would've walked my happy butt to Kristy Kreme in Greenville. NEVER again.

Michelle L.

Yelp
Giving 5 for the best cream puffs and cream horns ever. Owner is hard working but no nonsense and isn't big on small talk. Order what you want and tell him up front if you need in 2 separate bags. He may not be of a southern hospitality but he's a heck of a baker and is matter of fact. Don't miss this place and just kind of think you're on the soup Nazi episode of Seinfeld. He's really nice though in a northern way. Go see Mr Greg. A word to the wise though, they close when they sell out. They are there like at 2:30am making dough so it will rise so they deserve to get off early. Thanks for the cream puffs you sell.

Kimberly S.

Yelp
Don't known about the food hear. The owner was so rude. We left. I would not buy from someone who is so rude and ugly to their customer.

Brian S.

Yelp
We just got our 1st cake from here and it is delicious! Very well decorated and reasonable price. We also got 2 fresh made glazed donuts that we're fantastic! We definitely recommend this bakery.

Susan L.

Yelp
The bake goods are awesome! I especially love the cake squares and my husband loves the cream puffs. However, I will never darken the door of this business again. What a shame that the owner is so rude. I have been on several occasions and I always spend around $15-20 dollars. Today was the last straw for me. I never expected to walk in a bakery and leave practically in tears. I would think it would be a pleasant experience. I was told "Make your mind up lady before you come in here." "I'm busy and you don't know how it is to have to work so hard" or something along these lines. How does he know how hard I work? Someone told me he was from the north and didn't understand us southerners. No excuse as far as I'm concerned. I've been to bakeries in NYC and was never talked to like this.

Yelp
Since arriving in Washington, NC - we have been greeted with such hospitality and welcoming people. Brownie Bakery was just as wonderful of an experience! The donuts were delicious and the service was amazing! We will definitely be going back!

Stasha P.

Yelp
The pastries are amazingly delicious. A must try. The owner is a little rough around the edges but his cream horns make up for it 10 fold. This man knows how to bake. I hadn't had a cream horn since I was a kid and had one here and it was like a flash back to my childhood up north. Definitely recommend you to stop in and try something.

Yelp
It's really 4.5 stars, but it blows the local competition away so badly that it gets 5 stars. I worked in Eastern North Carolina for several months and found the coffee here to be consistently head, shoulders, and chest above the competition. Furthermore, the pastries, cakes, and other desserts are outstanding. I found myself making excuses with colleagues to stop in here to grab a cup of coffee, a cake, or pastry at least once per day. I am mystified as to why the locals in Washington didn't know much about this place. I kept hearing about "the Starbucks in Greenville", but this place is so, so much better than anything you will ever get from a Starbucks. Remember, friends don't let friends drink Starbucks. They also serve a decent lunch. Support this place Washington, you don't know how rare these kinds of places are in the world.

Terry S.

Yelp
Had a taste for a cream puff and glaze donut, but to my surprise the owner wasn't wearing a mask or gloves while serving customers. I did see him use wax paper to pick up pastries but place in counter before boxing. I hadn't even noticed he wasn't wearing it but as I observing him that I couldn't do it. I left very disappointed and will not be going back. Covid is real and we all must do our part. Did I mention that the owner has to be at least 60 years old.

Yelp
I was looking for a place close to the hospital to grabs some muffins, etc for a breakfast meeting so I ventured into Brownie Bakery. I read Aqua's review of how great the coffee was so I indulged in a cup while I waited...sho nuff, it was pretty darn good! I ordered a plethora of pastries and muffins- there were A LOT to choose from. The guy running the place seemed nice enough, not overly friendly like some cheeseball, which I can appreciate. The place is a little on the cheesy side with the way it is decorated but so what! I'm not there for the decor, I'm there for the goods. It was shiny clean, smelled good, and I got some great coffee and pastries for a decent price. When I got to my meeting, I asked the locals why Brownie Bakery isn't busier since they seemed to love the pastries and muffins. I was told that for a little town like Washington, it is too pricey. It's a shame because you def get what you pay for and this place is a gem! I'll def be back!

Yelp
Went to Goose Creek to camp for the weekend and had to come in town to buy provisions. Not a thing to like about this place. It was decorated tacky (not in a cool way). Owner did not want to fill the carafe with regular/plain coffee because (and I'm not making this up) "its really expensive coffee" and he was closing in an hour. so we were "forced" into buying espresso drinks. from the taste, not expensive espresso...damage? two lattes, one doughnut = $12.73!! WTF?!? we were too overly the experience to even bother to argue the point. I REALLY hope this was a singular event but it was pretty awful (because i prefer to support local, non-chain businesses). the doughnut was pretty good...the only reason they get a 2nd star

Yelp
We were looking for another bakery when we found this Brownie and I am so glad we did. After getting one gingerbread man, some cheese straws and a cinnamon bun, we headed out only to turn around and go back for more stuff to take back to New Bern. Cheese straws were light and crunchy, cinnamon bun perfect , and the gingerbread men baked with the right combination of chewy and crunch. This bakery is the real thing.

Yelp
People frequent small businesses in small communities expecting friendly faces and good service. Instead, at Brownie Bakery my inquiry into what I had heard were famous cream puffs was met with correction and disdain. When I think of a cream puff, I think of profiteroles, a round, cream-filled pastry that puffs when baked in the oven because of trapped steam. A cream-filled donut, by contrast is fried yeast dough. They look different and taste differently. Nonetheless, the shop clerk indirectly accused us of not being able to read when we asked about the cream puffs while looking at a sign that said "cream-filled donuts." He went out of his way to define the pastries--according to his own system of definitions, apparently--to make a point about our ignorance, when it was him who was miss-labeling the items. I'm giving this decades-old bakery a three-star review because in spite of the fact that the pastries are good I experienced some of the worst customer service I have endured in some time.

Priscilla B.

Yelp
The baked items are good but the service is horrible and the owner is rude. We are locals and have several encounters. Today we went in to purchase items for the local residents at a nursing home and asked for a item for a diabetic resident and was told by the owner "I don't carry items for diabetics there is no profit in it" we placed our order which came to 9.78, we were then told that it is under $10.00 and could not use a credit card, we had no cash on us and was told by the owner that we had to purchase something else or could not purchase and jerked the items off the counter. This will be our last visit. This is very poor customer service and we hope that locals and tourist alike find another place to visit, we suggest Rachel K's.

Megan B.

Yelp
Terrible service. The man was so mean to us and our children. Cookies were stale, coffee was cold, prices were terrible. Never going back. I have never been treated so horribly at a business.

Julie C.

Yelp
I walked in to order and the man behind the counter must have been having a bad day. I ordered a dozen mixed donuts and changed my mind on the mix when the man beside me offered to take plain rather the chocolate ones I had asked for originally. The man behind the counter made a huge deal about my change of mind. He had not heard the offer from the previous customer and berated us both. After a few minutes of his tirade I left empty handed. I'll give my business to someone else.

Yelp
OMG this place is a gem, stuck in a small coastal community, that obviously has been ignored by Yelpers due to hardly any reviews. I have no pictures to share as I got so engulfed in the goodness of their sweet treats that they were basically destroyed when I realized I had no shots! The cake squares are out of this world good! I know, cake squares right? They are so light in texture, and the mound of icing is not the heavy sugar overload that most seem to be when decorated to this extent! The Chocolate Chip Cookie Sandwich is equally as fantastic as they use their homemade chocolate chip cookies that are chewy and full of chips! The cream, while maybe a bit too much, is not a heavy sweet icing that makes you want to stop midway through eating! Their huge cinnamon buns are obviously homemade, the size of a softball, covered in a nice sticky creamy icing, and just as good as anything Cinnabon ever put out! There's this other concoction they put out that's like a Creme Horn looking thing with powered sugar topping it, but when biting into it you instantly thing of a deep fried donut with a light cream filling that just melts in your mouth! Apparently some of these items are scarce each day as I heard locals coming in that we're excited some of these items still existed at this point! Well, they did exist, until they bought out every one he had in the display case! Yes I sampled a lot, and yes I have no pics to show, and yes I'll return again to take pics only. Right!!!! Come on Washington, NC! You better realize you have a gem of a bakery here!

Yelp
I called to inquire about a wedding cake. I had to leave a voice mail message for which I didnt receive a return phone call. I went by the place and was told that you have to make an appointment and pay a $25 consultation fee which comes off the price of the cake if you buy. Not that I have a problem with that, but really, I leave you a voice mail and you dont have the courtesy to call me back to tell me this? Its as though it wasnt even worth his while to return the call to tell me he was going to charge me a fee to talk about selling me a cake. It seems to me that in a small town like Washington, a small business would be eager to at least return a phone call inquiring about something like a wedding cake.

Chris B.

Yelp
I went in with my son for lunch and a dessert. Horrible experience!! From the service to the food.....I don't know which was worse....the service I think! We were ignored, rushed and in the middle handled rudely. The food was ok but VERY over priced for the quality. I do believe I could have gone to Food Lion and gotten better pastries. We were warned about this place and should have heeded the warning. There is a reason it is always DEAD!

Michelle L.

Yelp
I don't know about the food because I never got that far. The owner was so mean and hateful to me that I didn't eat there. If you want to be treated with respect you should go elsewhere.

Liz W.

Yelp
I was very excited about trying some treats from this quaint bakery but lost my appetite soon after arriving. The way a friend and I were spoken to by the apparent owner was ridiculously demeaning. One of the rudest experiences I've ever had with customer service left me walking out empty-handed. :(

James W.

Yelp
The atmosphere could use a boost, but the range of high quality baked goods is fantastic. I thought the prices were very reasonable, and freshly made donuts, muffins, and quiches were excellent for my Saturday breakfast.

J R.

Yelp
Brownie Bakery's doughnuts have always been the best, so I decided to venture into the cake department. I ordered a specialty cake in person and even wrote down what I wanted my cake to say. When I arrived about two weeks later to pick up my order, I was shocked to see "Congratulations" misspelled! The owner argued with me that since it was for one person, then the "s" should be left off because it was considered --- a singular noun! I turned to walk out, but he stopped me in desperation. I refused to purchase the cake unless he placed an "s" at the end. He did, but it looked awkward; however, I would rather have that than have a blatantly misspelled word on my cake. That was over ten years ago, and I have never been back.

Yelp
i called to inquire about the price of a round chocolate cake 10/29/2015. the owner of the place was soooooo rude . with his attitude over the phone , and a few bad words from him, i decided he had all the business he needed. i ordered 10 cakes from another bakery, and made a short visit to brownie bakery and showed him the $400. cake order he missed out on by being so ugly on the phone. he laughed it off, along with his continued attitude. i was leaving his store and a customer pulled up, well, you guessed it... i told her the deal,,, she left. good luck to you mr brownie... you need it!!!!
