Yelp
food - i'd rate the restaurant as my favorite burger joint, and only partially because of the burger itself. that said, burgers are still the primary product there, and the steak-burger style, open grill hamburger does not disappoint. i opted to get mine with all the standard toppings, onion, pickle, and mustard, and with a single patty and without cheese, though double patty and with cheese are both options. also, i'd placed my order to-go, though the burger was as tasty in the wrapper at home as i remember it being in the restaurant. further, i got a side of fries, a root beer, and a coconut meringue pie, all classic items from the restaurant. the fries are consistently good, being thick-cut and really filling. and good does not even do justice for the root beer from the restaurant, although the shirts i'd noticed the workers wearing come close with a slogan to the effect of the root beer is like heaven in a mug. and while i do not believe heaven can be contained in a to-go cup, the drink did remind me that there really are levels to root beer, and the restaurant truly sets the bar. and finally, though i do not remember trying the pie before tonight, the stacked meringue desserts that fill the display case at the front of the restaurant almost always get my attention, and my experience tasting the coconut variety meringue pie tonight was not disappointing, with it being expertly toasted and featuring a custardy filling and what seemed to me a graham crust that complemented the filling and meringue perfectly.
service - while i overheard a server say the name of the cook, i'll leave that out of the review because the excellent level of service during my experience tonight was a team effort. first, although i'd anticipated the restaurant may have closed before i arrived, the open sign was still flashing in the window and the workers had not locked the door quite yet. and then after likely seeing some disappointment on my face upon being told the restaurant closed six minutes prior to me getting there, the two servers working on closing duties agreed after confirming with the cook that the server who had not yet checked out on the computer was able to serve me. and although such accommodation is an occurrence i know not to expect, it does support a belief of me that local, family-owned restaurants have a potential to provide such unforgettable service experience in a way that franchised, fast food restaurants hardly ever imitate to perfection.
ambiance - as mentioned previously, i asked for my food to-go, so did not have an especially long window for appreciating the ambiance, but still took note of my favorite aspects in that category, foremost being the toy collection displayed above the cash register, which has been there since i've frequented the restaurant. also memorable is the multiple flavors of meringue pie in the display case, suggesting a specialty the restaurant maintains with that kind of pie. and finally, i like the retro diner style counter at the front of the restaurant, from which the server ran my order tonight, and which to me is the central component of establishing a memorable sitting area in the restaurant.
