The last couple of reviews I struggled to stay within the Yelp 5,000 character limit. I don't have to worry about this with this review on the Bruegger's Bagels off the Freedom Trail by the Irish Famine Memorial and Old South Meeting House.
It was a sunny summer afternoon in downtown Boston when we rested a few minutes at the Irish Famine Memorial. We got on the Boston Freedom Trail at the Old State House on a walk that would carry us to Fenway Park. We were chillaxing at the Memorial after breakfast in Pret A Manger. It didn't totally fill me up. When I was taking in the historic architecture at the corner of School and Washington Streets, I saw a sign for bagels. I figured we'd be here a few more minutes before a long walk to Fenway, why not compliment the scenery eating a bagel. And so I crossed School Street to step inside the large bagel shop.
Bruegger's Bagels alleges that they create and serve real New York bagels. New York bagels are soft on the outside and crunchy on the inside. Supposedly they prepare the bagels in house by kettle boiling then baking them in a kettle oven. I would put a basic poppy seed bagel to the test. First I would order the bagel. A nice touch is that you could see them create the bagel while you order it. Their website boasts that there are 17 basic bagels. On a busy afternoon, they quickly took my order and I quickly exchanged around $2 for the bagel. If I had gone here on an empty stomach, I could of ordered a bagel sandwich, Deli sandwich, panini, and several choices. Or I could of ordered one of their cream cheeses from the neighboring state of Vermont.
Back in the Irish Famine Memorial, I put the bagel to the test. My verdict is that it fell far short of a New York bagel at the same time that it was superior to Einstein Bros Bagels. Growing up in New York, I can write that if it was a real New York bagel, you could probably smell the bagel bakery all the way from the Massachusetts State Good. The picture below shows the nice size of the bagel.
The thing I really enjoyed about the bagel was eating it a Freedom Park Trail photo spot overlooking historical architecture near the old book store and the oldest school in Boston, and the Old South Meeting House. This is a spot to enjoy a bagel with a good cup of coffee. I don't know about Bruegger's coffee, however, I know that Dunkin Donuts coffee is outstanding. Owing to the fact that many of the hundreds of Dunkin Donuts need seating, this is an opportunity to sit down with a cup of Dunkin Donuts coffee with a bagel.
When we stopped for a bit a long the Freedom Trail, a Bruegger's bagel was an inexpensive and good snack. The carbohydrates would satisfy my appetite all the way into Fenway.
