Best New Restaurants in Wilmington, North Carolina | Eater Carolinas

"This casual breakfast and lunch joint, located in a historic downtown neighborhood, serves comforting classics, including chicken and waffles, shrimp and grits, pancakes, and fried bologna sandwiches, among others. Try Grandma Cookie’s shrimp grilled cheese, a soul food mashup of fried shrimp, plenty of cheese, and house sauce in between Texas toast. For those who need a brisk wake-up in the morning, the Kickin’ Chicken biscuit comes with fried chicken on a massive biscuit drenched in honey sriracha sauce." - Matt Lardie

Brunch Thyme is a hidden gem! The food was absolutely amazing. I had the fish and grits, and they were perfectly seasoned, some of the best I’ve ever had. The location is small with a cozy dine-in area, but don’t let the size fool you. The food is well worth the visit. My family and I also tried the chicken biscuit and the grits, eggs, and bacon. Every single dish was delicious, full of flavor, and clearly made with care. We left full and happy, already talking about what we’ll try next time. I’ll definitely be coming back whenever I’m in the area!

Brunch Thyme absolutely delivers on flavor, presentation, and portion size. From the moment you open the container, the aroma says “made from scratch, made with love.” What We Ordered • Loaded Tater Tot Breakfast Bowl – Crispy, golden tater tots layered with perfectly scrambled eggs, smoky bacon, fresh scallions, and a drizzle of creamy, slightly spicy sauce. Every bite had the ideal balance of crunch, fluff, and flavor. • Classic Tater Tots with Ketchup – A simple side, but Brunch Thyme nails it. Crisp outside, fluffy inside, lightly seasoned—exactly how tots should be. • French Toast Sticks – Thick-cut, custardy in the center with a warm cinnamon aroma. Sweet enough to enjoy without syrup, but decadent if you add some. • Kickin’ Chicken Biscuit with Home Fries – Buttery biscuit sandwiching juicy, crispy fried chicken with a gentle heat, paired with hearty potato cubes. Comfort food at its finest. • French Toast Breakfast Plate – Fluffy scrambled eggs, savory bacon, and rich French toast—a perfect classic breakfast combo. Taste & Quality Every dish felt thoughtfully prepared. The breakfast bowl was the standout—rich, savory, and indulgent without being greasy. The biscuits were fresh-baked with a perfect crumb, and the chicken had just the right level of spice. Even the “simple” sides were cooked to perfection. Service & Presentation Everything was packaged neatly for takeout, still hot and fresh when opened. Portions are generous, so you’ll leave full (and maybe with leftovers). The ingredients taste fresh, and the attention to detail in seasoning is noticeable. Overall Brunch Thyme is a Wilmington gem for both locals and visitors. Whether you want a creative brunch bowl or a comforting classic breakfast, they deliver in flavor, quality, and value. Definitely a place worth returning to—and next time, I’m bringing more friends so we can sample even more of the menu. Favorite Bite: The loaded tater tot breakfast bowl—crispy, cheesy, and packed with flavor.

Great find on our short trip into Wilmington today. The only reason for 4 stars on atmosphere. Is there’s not enough seating for more people to enjoy 😊 This is a simple place to be shared. I had the SEC Biscuit. See photo👇YUMMY! Homemade Biscuits and to die for. They even have Turkey Sausage, yippee! 🥳 Grits that remind you of the good Ole south and no doubt with maple syrup. And several options of FRESH MADE JUICES!! Looking forward to coming back and trying their pancakes. Smell delicious. Thank you!!

Google
During a recent visit to Wilmington for an acting gig, I had the pleasure of dining at Brunch Thyme. Their waffles were a highlight—perfectly sweet and crispy, offering a delightful texture and flavor. The over-medium eggs were cooked to perfection, boasting a rich and runny yolk that complemented the meal beautifully. Additionally, their bacon stood out as authentic and flavorful, adding to the overall satisfying experience. For those seeking a memorable brunch spot in Wilmington, Brunch Thyme is a must-visit. Highly recommended!

Google
I love the food here. I ordered the stake and cheese bagel with tots, and my daughter Pancake, scrabble egg and cheese, along with bacon..The food was very good. Customer service excellent. I wish that they were in a better location, but all in all, very good.

Google
Delicious breakfast! We ordered the chicken and French toast and salmon and grits. The home fries were amazing as well! We’ll be back for sure!

Google
The food was beyond amazing and delicious. The price is extremely fair for the quality of food you’re getting. My daughter and I just went there today and I got the headliner bowl and grits. She got eggs, smoked sausage and bacon and everything was delicious. Their thyme sauce is insanely good. But I tried my daughter smoked sausage and that thing is delicious. We will be coming back but with the whole family. I can’t wait for this place to expand so we could sit down inside and eat. We also ordered two of the grape lemonades. Those are also very, very good. The staff was extremely friendly and the wait time was not bad at all. PS their cheese grits are fire.🔥

Google
Loved our breakfast from here! Highly recommend. We ordered food to take to the beach with no regrets. The sauce on top of the loaded breakfast bowl 10/10! The French toast had so much flavorrrrr. Service was friendly and inviting. They are in there cooking to some great music too.

Yelp
This place is simple on the inside. I have not got my food yet but this place smells like my grandma's kitchen. Food is off the charts good! I will be back.....soon

Yelp
I was staying at a nearby hotel this past Sunday and realized that a lot of breakfast/brunch places in the area did not open until after 10am. At this point it was about 9:15am and I saw Brunch Thyme was open. Not doing a lot of research I walked over and assumed it was a sit down restaurant but quickly learned that it's actually take out. I think the worker saw the disappointment on my face when I walked in and she offered me a small foldable table to place outside which encouraged me to stay. My partner ordered the fish n' grits and I ordered The Frenchie which both turned out to be great choices. The fish was seasoned well, I believe it was whiting and the grits were rich and creamy. It came with a delicious gravy that we didn't notice until the meal was almost finished but ended up spooning like a soup. My French toast and eggs were tasty as well. For drinks they had canned Coke products, apple juice and bottled water. Sitting outside was hot and the bugs were constant but I was thankful to have a place to eat because again, I walked here (about 20 min). I observed many people eating in their cars or simply taking their food to go. With this, I also saw a few groups come and go as they didn't realize it was a take out style restaurant. Minus the heat, we enjoyed our meal and the customer service we received. Prices were responsible and portion sizes were filling. Check it out if you're in the area.

Yelp
It was great. This is definetly all from scratch and food from the south! A nice little local breakfast spot. I got a bacon egg & cheese biscuit with a side of cheese grits and it was sooo good! The biscuit was also pretty big. Support local businesses!

Yelp
Great local business serving up some excellent brunch food. My favorite is the kickin chicken biscuit with a side of grits. There is no seating inside and a few small tables outside if you need a place to sit. Service can get a bit slow if they get too many orders at once but just be patient, the food is worth the wait!

Yelp
The experience at this restaurant was absolutely unpleasant today. My husband and I came down to NC to visit some family and since I am 3 Months post-partum they told us to go out on a date brunch and spend some one on one quality time. So we had very limited time. Upon arriving to this restaurant we walk in, notice that it's only a carry out resturant. We wanted to dine in but figured we would just take it to go. As we are looking at the menu the lady at the counter says that there is a 45 minute wait and they had run out of various items that were on the menu. So this being said my husband and I had a very limited time frame and could not wait. As we turn around and are exiting the restaurant the lady at the front of the restaurant behind the counter who was updating guests of the 45 minute wait and listing of items they didn't have in stock about yells out as my back is turned that "you all don't want to support black owned business." This is totally absurd I didn't even react and just walked out. First off I don't care who owns the business, I don't research that, I go into a place that has good food and what was recommended by other's. We were judged immediately as we walked in which is so wrong on so many levels. Please think twice before you judge your customers who are coming in, and wanting to actually eat good food.

Yelp
Me and my friends went on Saturday for brunch and the food was amazing wait was about 20 minutes and it was worth the wait

Yelp
Fab breakfast spot in the arts district! I was wondering what would replace the corner chicken joint and I'm pleased to say this place has hit it out of the park! Excellent breakfast bowls with potatoes, eggs, chorizo and hollandaise. My husband had the BEC bagel that was solid. The. Is hits are too notch as well. I have yet to try much else but we will be hitting it up again soon!

Yelp
Amazing little spot for good eats. The food is made to order and everyone seems friendly and relaxed at work. The line seemed to keep moving because there were tons of people. Which is a great thing' would definitely recommend. It's small but I think that the point! People don't mind the wait.

Yelp
We were leaving the Wilmington airport and a Google search for food lead us here. It's not a sit down and relax kinda place, but for takeout it's one of those places you have to be glad you didn't drive by! My kids called the pancakes "fire" (which means amazing in kid speak btw) and my mom found the bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit "to die for" (which also means amazing in grandma speak btw). There were a number of things on the menu that suggest a second visit is a requirement. No frills but polite service. Totally worth going a few blocks away from downtown for!

Yelp
Used to be Chicken in the Box. To-go only. In the future you'll be able to order food online. I ordered in person and did not wait too long for the food, about 12 minutes. I enjoyed listening to the upbeat late 1990s/early 2000s R&B music while waiting inside. Ordered the sec biscuit with breakfast potatoes, a la carte French toast, and side of peach cobbler. The SEC biscuit was my favorite. It came with egg, American yellow cheese, 2 turkey or pork sausage patties, and a side of either breakfast potatoes, grits, tater tots or fresh fruit. It was a huge biscuit sandwich-I couldn't finish it. The biscuit was buttery and so tender. Potato side was seasoned and grilled well. French toast was good, but I was not into the cardamom flavor. Came as 4 half slices of Texas toast. Peach cobbler was warm, in a sweet cream sauce with a buttery shortbread cookie crumble topping. Small portion. You get a discount if you pay with cash. Side nutrition note: nice they have ketchup packets with no high fructose corn syrup. I can't wait to come back just for the SEC biscuit!

Yelp
Food is incredible!! Can't go wrong with anything on the menu, the ordering process is a little interesting. You may find yourself waiting a bit longer with people coming in after you, ordering, getting their food and leaving before your order is getting started. Other than that, employees are kind & it's always busy!

Yelp
To start- I LOVE On Thyme so much. So I was very excited to try their brunch restaurant. I was disappointed to find out that we couldn't eat there, either inside or outside. We ended up eating in the bed of our truck. The staff inside were all super nice, with fun music playing. We ordered a breakfast sandwich which was good and the shrimp and grits. The shrimp and grits were more like soup with grits in it. Not at all how shrimp and grits should be. I couldn't eat much of it because it really was like soup. Based on all the great reviews and their other restaurant, I'll go back and try something else another time.

Yelp
So freaking good!!! Friendly, all homemade, great combos and the biscuits were perfect. I would've taken a picture but I was sticky from devouring!! Highly recommend the SEC, Kickin Chicken and the cheesy grits!! Just know you can't eat inside but you can eat outside and you should eat it when it's fresh and hot!! Yummm

Yelp
What a wonderful meal for takeout I just had! Salmon and grits were outstanding! Thanks.

Yelp
It's like that here at brunch thyme The staff very friendly. I wanted to start light so I decide to get the bologna and cheese egg sandwich made to order and some grits were so creamy and flavorful. And the bottled iced tea is amazing I'm looking forward to try the whole menu during my visits.

Yelp
The food was very good. I had the fish and grits and added shrimp to it as well. The grits were nice and creamy. Both the shrimp and fish are fried. It comes withs green onions, tomato's and gravy on top. All the food was well seasoned and everything came together nicely. The French toast was your standard French toast, nothing out of the ordinary. However, their pancakes are very light, fluffy, and have a move sweetness to them. The service was great, the cashier was very nice and professional. The vibe was very welcoming and laid back. If you plan on eating here they only go to go orders so try to be aware of that. I will definitely be returning in the future. They have a lot of items on the menu I would love to try.

Yelp
We tried Brunch Thyme this morning, and it was so good! I had a breakfast sandwich with the breakfast potatoes, both were great portions and really tasty. They got really busy after we ordered but gave us updates on our order while we waited, which I appreciated. Bottom line, it is delicious food at a good price with friendly service. We will return!

Yelp
Love the bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit. Hubby likes everything. Fish and grits, shrimp and grits are all delicious. If you haven't tried Brunch Thyme go get some

Yelp
I wasn't the biggest fan of the food, toast had a metallic aftertaste and was only toasted on one side. Ordered Bacon and received a pancake instead, which smells and visually looks appealing but I cannot eat it because of an allergy. Took a good while for the food to come out as well. The workers were kind though.

Jazmere H.

Yelp
forgot one of our sandwiches gave us the wrong thing we came back. They gave us the sandwich that had been sitting up there until we came back to me. That was very unprofessional and it was cold flavor profiles. I would give a 3.7 out of 10. Definitely overhyped try at your own risk.

Mark V.

Yelp
Stopped in for the first time this morning...we each had an SEC biscuit which was excellent. A great buttery biscuit holding 2 turkey sausage patties, an egg, and plenty of melted cheese was a handful and it came with a side of potatoes. A wonderful breakfast!!! All customers were greeted by the friendly staff upon entering the front door. Service on this Saturday morning was very cordial and efficient. Take out only. Brunch Thyme is definitely a KEEPER.

Ben H.

Yelp
Everything about this little breakfast place was great. The staff was so lively and welcoming. You can tell that they put their hearts into their food. My biscuit was just what I was looking for and my lady loved her French toast. Will be going back to try some of their shrimp dishes and the bowls for sure. Love having this little place in the neighborhood.

Yelp
i don't understand take out only brunch. that's an oxymoron to me. since i was there i tried the breakfast bowl which had scrambled eggs, bacon and what i believe were store bought frozen tater tots. it's topped with their sauce. it was OK but nothing i'd go out of my way for. on the positive side the staff was friendly and the food only took 10 minutes to get. the other oddity was there's no public restroom. in a restaurant?
