Barcelona’s Best Restaurants in the Gothic Quarter, El Born, and El Raval | Eater

"A collaboration between Cafés El Magnífico and Canal, a high-end patisserie. Their croissant won the prize for best butter croissant of 2020, while the high-backed banquette and that Tiffany shade of turquoise will have you lingering over your coffee." - Suzy Taher

We bought three different pieces to try them, all of them croissants and they were very nice, I’m not sure if “the best”, but certainly very good. Three times the price of what they are in France 😅 or other places in Spain for that matter. It was very nice to know they have a cafe area where you can sit for a while.

First of all, the pistachio croissant was quite nice, in which the fillings inside is very delicious! However, we are not satisfied with the experience of the customer service. We wanted to get two croissants which is one pistachio and the festive edition sant jordi croissant. But the girl that took our order only heard we wanted to get one pistachio and got us just one. That’s totally fine, so we asked her to get one sant jordi croissant for us, we paid and take away both of them. After that we realised that she got us two pistachio croissants instead ?!??? We specify the croissants that we wanted for twice but she did not even get it right. And she was giving some attitude to us as well, which I don’t think this is acceptable. It is not packed at all at the moment. We were so annoyed that we could not try the other flavour to be honest. So hopefully they can improve the customer service here. I went to quite a lot of restaurants and places in Barcelona, and this is one and only place that I received a bad experience…..

Great experience! We had the croissant stuffed with cheesecake and raspberry jam. It was delicious. Loved watching the bakers work as we ate.

A good spot to rest and have a coffee after visiting the Picasso Museum. The waitresses weren’t very polite. The pistachio croissant was really delicious. I found the prices high and think the place is a bit overrated

Hands down best croissant we had in Barcelona - fluffy crunchy airy and not butter heavy. There were layers of texture to it, very well made and arguably one of the best croissants I have had. My wife thinks they also serve the best latte we had in Barcelona; Brunells uses Magnifico beans which we also visited, I think it was just the blend that my wife prefers more. The smashed croissant with Iberico was very interesting as well. The cafe is very busy so it is not the best place to past time or have a comfortable conversation with friends, but definitely worth a stop by if you like croissant, they didn’t claim themselves as best in Barcelona for no reason.

I was excited to try both the butter croissant and the pistachio croissant at Brunells, since they were voted best croissant in Spain. Their butter croissant utterly disappointed me (it wasn't flaky or soft as you expect a butter croissant to be), and their pistachio one didn't live upto expectations either. Cortado that I had was decent. But everything is overpriced and I have had way better croissants and coffee in many places in Barcelona, at half the prices or lower. I cannot say positively about the staff service and attitude either.

Loved it. Truly a gem of a place. The service was good too. I would absolutely recommend coming if you find yourself in Barcelona

Google
Brunells truly has the best croissants in Spain, and honestly, some of the best I’ve ever had. Their baked goods are perfectly buttery, flaky, and balanced in flavor, making every bite an absolute delight. I highly recommend trying their classic croissants like pain au chocolat, but don’t miss out on their special creations with cheesecake cream or lemon pie cream—they are next-level delicious! They are a bit expensive but it’s worth it. If you love croissants, this place is a must-visit. You won’t be disappointed! There is also a nice caffè connected to the bakery where you can sit and enjoy your croissants with a hot drink. Service is always professional and friendly!

Yelp
Another late review - My friend and I were wandering the streets of Barcelona and came across Brunells. What made us stop was the signage that they had been awarded the best croissant in Spain, in 2020. Walked in, got a seat and saw for ourselves. You can order takeout or dine in. It's not a big establishment so get there early - I can't speak for reservations as we didn't have one nor did we ask as we only had to wait a few minutes to be seated. Service was wonderful. Our host/server/cashier spoke English and was so helpful, attentive and friendly. We went with her recommendations on what to try and share. We shared both a Pistachio and a Ham & Cheese croissant (see pics). The Pistachio is their most popular and then opted for the Ham & Cheese to have something substantial as opposed to just snack type bites. I enjoyed the Ham & Cheese more - odd coming from one who prefers sweet dessert types over savory. However, that's not to say I didn't like the first - I liked them both, just one more than the other. Maybe I should have had the Pistachio first and I'd be singing a different tune. Drinks for me were good or what I've said before standard. It was good enough that I'd have it again, but nothing I'd rave about and tell you to add it to your list of things to try before you die. Would I go back? Not sure. So many other places to try but I would, if circumstances dictated so. Like if it was my only option but know that I wouldn't be sad about going back

Yelp
Really yummy croissants! This is my first time trying croissants with cream and fruits in the middle and it is pretty amazing though not easy to eat without making your hands dirty. There was a short line when I came at ~3pm and many of the pastry/desserts were gone already so come early!

Yelp
I was dying because of jet lag, and was revived by a cup of delicious iced latte from Brunells. The inside was modern and neat and staffs were nice and professional. A great place to stop by and take a break.

Yelp
Wow! This place is a gem!! I tried several pastry shops around Barcelona and was not impressed. I saw the advertisements on the windows of this pastry shop about being one of the best in the city and I decided to give it a shot. Their pastries are delicious! The filled croissant is one of the best pastries I've had! They have a nice variety of different filling types and fruit inside as well! I also tried the key lime pie and it was aesthetic and so good! They have two sides to the business- one is to go- and the other side is to sit down. If you choose to get it to go note there isn't much seating around this area of town. I'd recommend eating there! The iced matcha latte was delicious and all in all a great value for around 10$ for a croissant and a matcha. The servers were kind and efficient!

Yelp
**December 2022: Afternoon Visit** My friend and I walked by Brunnells and saw a pastry chef work roll out some delicious croissants. Curious by the baked goods I walked around and saw the store window with lots of tasty treats. I also noticed on the digital promo that it was the 2020 winner for Best Croissant in Spain - well now... I had to test it for myself! When we entered the bakery they asked if I wanted to do takeout or dine-in, when my friend suggested dine-in we were directed next door and saw a cue of people waiting for a seat. Thankfully, we didn't wait long and we sat at a small booth. My friend and I shared the pistachios croissant and the ham/cheese. Pistachio: This is their most popular croissant as I saw multiple tables with it. When I first bit into it it reminded me of a Beard Papa's Cream Puff but with pistachio filling. The cream on the inside had a more frozen cream center versus a soft creamy one and the croissant was nice and buttery. (4/5) Ham/Cheese: Such a simple and classic sando, but done right. Everything paired well and the croissant itself was lightly toasted to give sando a nice crunch. (5/5) My friend and I also ordered beverages which were good (4/5). I think if you're wanting to enjoy a simple cafe style meal with a friend this is a great place to do that! Enjy!

Yelp
One of the best croissants you'll have, cute shop, and good service. Walked by Brunells after the Picasso Museum. Elegant store and then discovered they have a cute café on the other side. Had a couple sandwiches and dessert consisting of the pistachio and raspberry semifreddo type dish, along with the chocolate and cherry mousse thingy. All was tasty and light. Perfect small and sweet meal. We also ordered three croissants for the next day's breakfast-- pistachio, the chocolate dipped one, and a chestnut/walnut one. They really are superb for their croissants. Supremely light and layers, with a soft and airy bread, and not hard parts. Wow.

Yelp
Brunells was very busy when we stopped in for a late morning coffee and pastry. We were lucky to find a table. Our waitress showed up pretty quick and made some suggestions that we went with. The table ordered a chocolate and pistachio croissant and a few other pastries. Everything was delicious but the pistachio croissant was next level delicious. Everything else paled in comparison. I definitely recommend that you try one. The coffee was good.

Yelp
Best croissant in Barcelona? Quite possibly.

Yelp
High quality sweets and coffee. I tried its brownie, it was awesome. Beside that the bakery has a theme whenever visit it, each theme is sponsored by fashion brand and employees wear with the theme style and you can purchase the clothes and fashion items with some discounts. We did not buy any clothes but it was interesting.

Yelp
Near the Picasso museum we found Brunnells when we saw the beautiful pastries in the window. With a takeout side and a sit down diner side we grabbed a great cappuccino and some pastries before we went to the museum. It was delicious and the service was very friendly. With a lot of hipster places near by we like how friendly and laid back and energetic the staff was. Would love to visit again.

Yelp
We came here on a tapas tour and toured their kitchen (so cool!) and tried a mini xuixo and coffee. I'm not a coffee drinker but ordered a cortado and it was pretty good. That xuixo though - I'd come back for that.

Yelp
This is a great bakery in the El Born neighborhood. We really enjoyed the Xuixo (choo choo's). I also bought a package of chocolates and pastries to bring home to share at work. Also the coffee is solid as is most in Spain.

Yelp
Another little gem tucked away in our tourist destination. We stopped in just to look around. My friend's office had requested Italian sweets and this place was full of them. The best part: an older woman sitting the corner hand wrapping chocolate to be sold. Love it. So much sweets to choose from and our mini-tasting was yummy!

Yelp
Great spot for morning coffee and pastries. I stayed around the corner and this was a great find. Just off Princesa, we found this place as we were looking for coffee in the morning and heard the clanging of coffee cups and plates. I miss the soppresata croissants which is a must have. Service was very American friendly and starting the day there was quite relaxing.

Yelp
Right in the tourist central of the city is yet another pastry place. There were some unique and colorful offerings. Some things that I've seen elsewhere while others which were a treasure to me. I did pick up some chocolate for the road for fun. No one needs chocolate...it's just fun to get just cause. Customer service was friendly and prices were decent.

Yelp
Solid espresso -- for Spain. Bright, homey environment, except for the sticky tables. I tested 5 just to be sure. But, overall, it's the only good coffee shop near the Picasso museum. Pastries are fine. Locals visit it.
