"This Virginia bar is a strong option for a glass of bubbly; there also wines and ciders. The small menu includes choices like truffled egg toast, bacon-wrapped plates, and raclette, plus a whole bunch of other cheeses and meats." - Missy Frederick, Eater Staff

"Neighborhood wine shop Grape + Bean has reconfigured the downstairs of its flagship location in Old Town Alexandria into Brut, a Champagne-centric drinking den pouring over a half-dozen kinds of bubbly by the glass. Dustin Lara, a hospitality vet, is in charge of the updated wine bar below, while the former team manages the upstairs tasting room/classroom." - Warren Rojas

A lovely little wine bar with an excellent selection! The service was attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable, contributing to the great atmosphere. We tried a few appetizers, and all were very good.

Google
The best place to spend an evening in old town. Dustin and Nikki are so knowledgeable on their wines. We’ve stopped in to pick up wine for dinner at home and they know the perfect pairing for our meals. Also, the atmosphere is intimate at Brut, where everybody knows your name and is happy to be there. Over the years we have realize that Brut has the best selection of wine in Alexandria, and the best value. Brut has been open 17 years and counting, and it shows. A true gem of old town Alexandria.

Google
In town for a conference and this place is perfect for solo dining. Bartenders and servers were welcoming and helpful. Delicious wine list, and a fun selection of cheeses and charcuterie. Onion jam was special. The assortment of breads served with the cheeseboard were warm from the oven, it’s a small touch, but it’s not often done. Only thing I would change is to offer a wine flight so I could try several different wines.

Google
Very amazing atmosphere, friendly staff and friendly patrons. Even when they are busy the staff manages to keep up. Champagne and wine are great! The small plates are perfect size for a snack while having a few drinks.

The cutest little wine bar tucked away in old town. Staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. Wine and snacks were delicious. Romantic vibe. Would highly recommend to anyone!

Stopped in tonight with a group wanting some precelebratory drinks before the real dinner party. Unfortunately, our group was met with disdain almost immediately. While it was a relatively large group, we stayed to the back of the establishment. After being there for about 30 minutes, we were approached and asked when our group would be leaving. The explanation given was that we were "too big for the space" even though there were still open tables in the room. This desire to get us to leave was further reinforced not much later when our tabs were closed without our request and the bills brought to each of us. As we left and fairly questioned the treatment, we were now told that "we weren't spending any money" even though EVERY member of our group had bought a glass of champagne or wine. Needless to say, this isn't the way you treat a group of paying customers, at least not if you truly desire to be known as a welcoming business.

Walked in with a large group. Everybody ordered. Manager first asked us to not block the aisles. Then she asked us to consolidate our party. Then with a clearly bad attitude told us they were at capacity (they were not) and set down our check. Told another member of our party that we needed to move on, even though people were still drinking wine they just purchased. Would not go back.

Google
Amazing wine and a super knowledgeable owner who is more than happy to talk wine and make suggestions. The people here make you feel welcome the second you come in. If you’d rather keep to yourself, that’s fine too. But I’ve never been somewhere that people just organically strike up conversations with others at the bar. All the time.

Yelp
A nice hidden gem in Old Town, Alexandria! My waitress was super nice and offered great recommendation's on the small plates. The place was nice and quiet and had cozy, dim lighting. Perfect place for a solo date or regular date.

Yelp
I was doing some shopping on a gorgeous Saturday in Alexandria and decided to stop in Brut. It has been a long time since I've been here so was hoping for some good food and great bubbly. I was seated right away by the bartender/waitress. Another server came and took my drink order. They had the Field Day Strawberry Rose which was crisp and refreshing. The food choices looked interesting and I would have ordered food but never got the opportunity. My waiter walked by me multiple times after taking my order and never came back to check on me or ask if I wanted anything else. He did check on the patrons at the other tables. I hate to bring in racism if it's not warranted but it was not lost on me that I was the only Black patron in the restaurant and was ignored. The restaurant also was not busy. I was checking email in my phone for over an hour and only had one cider. The bartender/waitress came to check on me by this time and I just asked for my check. What a horrible experience this was. I know many people of color who don't patronize NoVa restaurants because they feel many of the establishments are racist. I sadly have to agree after this experience. I do not recommend Brut at all.

Yelp
Visited after coming across this place while stopping by the shop next door. Was pleasantly surprised to see the huge selection of wines available. Sat down at the bar and the staff was able to recommend a lovely champagne, which I had a glass of. Dustin and Nikki were a pleasure to chat with. The establishment was very cute. I will definitely be returning soon.

Yelp
We met up with a group who stopped at Brut before going to a dinner to cerebrate a birthday. Everyone of us ordered a glass of wine, with some ordering a bottle. It wasn't long before we overheard disparaging comments from the staff, including the manager about the group. As soon as we were finished with our first glass of wine, the staff started issuing the tab bills. When one of the couples tried to order another glass of wine, they were told 'no'. To say the least, the staff/manager were very rude. Even before we were finished drinking our one glass of wine the tabs appeared before we could even order another. They certainly wouldn't get a congeniality award where I come from!! It would be best for anyone who would like a drink to go on down the street where an Irish flag flies outside an Irish bar who wholeheartedly welcomes you!!

Ash S.

Yelp
Brut is a cozy, off-King Street choice for a great selection of wines and snacks. While the space is small and it can get loud, the service is impeccable, and the food is surprisingly delectable ( I say surprisingly, because I have no idea where they could fit a kitchen.)

EriCKa C.

Yelp
N/a in the food this time. Service is excellent!!! Ambiance is cute and quaint Cheers!!! We will be back. Happy Memorial Day weekend!!!

Ashley G.

Yelp
I absolutely love the cozy feel of this place. It gets crowded, but it's small and dark and warm. A great date place. The charcuterie boards are good, with pick 3 or pick 5 items options. I will definitely return.

Ajay M.

Yelp
I've lived in the DC/NoVa area for over four years and haven't been to Brut. Finally went and turns out it's fantastic. The bartender Dustin is patient, knowledgeable, and friendly. I had no idea I enjoyed French chardonnay champagne but thanks to Dustin I know I do now. He has great recommendations that I would heed. The place is small but the ambience is nice. If you're not sure what to choose, go with the champagne flight or ask Dustin for a recommendation. Prefect place to start the night or end the night. Cheers!

Amy S.

Yelp
Walked in and out - not friendly nor helpful. Called "Brut" but they don't even have a Champagne flight, also, we're supposed to open at 3 but had a sign saying "open a 4 today." Whatever

Alexis F.

Yelp
I had a lovely experience here. It's a great date spot. The lights are down low and it is very intimate. That have a wonderful drink and charcuterie selection. There was so much to choose from that I asked the waitress for her recommendation and she did it stir me wrong. I would definitely go back!

Colleen L.

Yelp
Stopped in to Brut for a low-key birthday dinner and it was nothing but delightful! They don't take reservations there, and when we popped in around 6:30 the place was packed. Dustin, the owner, greeted us immediately and made us a spot to hangout at the bar until some seats opened up. Even just waiting at the bar, the ambience was lovely. When we eventually sat down for dinner, Dustin answered all of our questions and was so sweet and accommodating. We had the Spanish salad with anchovies, duck rillete, bolognese, and--my favorite of the night--the raclette. Everything was superb and paired amazingly with a glass of sparkling gamay. The service was impeccable, the staff were all so great, and it's clear this place is a neighborhood gem. We will be back!

Courtney B.

Yelp
This place was amazing! Nothing but great things to say! From the variety for the charcuterie to the price of champagne flights and the amazing service we received by the employees! Definitely will be returning soon!

D H.

Yelp
I had a fun time here on small business Saturday and had a flight of champagne along with a charcuterie. I also had a small plate of toasted and eggy bread with some bacon.

Tina L.

Yelp
What can we say except:YASSSSSS! The wine choices are exceptional and Dustin and his staff are very knowledgeable! Every bottle we have ever ordered has been a winner! The food, it's amazing! The Raclette(which we also term with great affection, the Flaming wheel of cheese) is absolutely to die for! Every plate that we have ever ordered has been spot on! The crostini is delicious and The charcuterie selection is the best in Old Town! Atmosphere is quaint and welcoming! Always with a quick "hello" upon arrival. Never a rushed experience.l You can't go wrong here..promise You can't go wrong here..promise

Emily M.

Yelp
Are you ready for champagne and fun times while surrounded by the beautiful lights and charm of old town? If so, this is your place. Some if the best customer service and comfort I've had in a while. I decided to try the champagne flight and deviled eggs, wow, it did not disappoint. I think this is going to quickly become my new favorite hang out!

Michelle F.

Yelp
I could come here over and over and it would never get old. I love everything about Brut: the cozy ambiance, the walkable location in Alexandria, the fantastic wine and cheeses. Come here for: date night! Recommendations: the manchego cheese is INCREDIBLE. I recommend getting the charcuterie board with 3-5 meats/cheeses. The board comes with a ton of other fun stuff like olives and other snacks. It's truly fantastic.

vickie c.

Yelp
Lovely, quaint, intimate, quality snacks and knowledgeable staff on all their wines. There's outdoor seating however we called ahead for indoor seating. Tables are small. Be prepared for parties of four or less. The cheese is worth the trip.

Jason G.

Yelp
My friend and I went to Brut to check out the new restaurant, and unfortunately, I was disappointed in the overall level of offerings here. The concept of having a sparkling wine-focused restaurant was interesting, which is why I made a specific point of coming here. The wine list is not just sparkling wine, however, and they have a fair selection of whites and reds. It seems like all the wines are basically on display throughout the restaurant. When we walked in, I was surprised because the smell was not appetizing. A little bit moldy, and the initial impression almost made me walk out because the decor and general vibe was almost tepid and quiet. All the furniture looked cheap, and people were quiet. There was no ambient noise. We sat ourselves, even though it was unclear if we were supposed to wait for a table. They had two guys working, and overall the service was slow. The main plus about this restaurant was that they do have a lot of unique wines that you were not really see on many restaurant wine lists. We ordered cheese and meat, as well as in raclette, which they probably make in front of everyone. We were served our wine relatively quickly, but the cheese took basically 30 minutes. ...To cut five pieces of cheese when there's only 10 people total in the bar? We have to get to another event, and I saw that they had not started making the raclette, so I unfortunately had to cancel that order because we ran out of time. Overall, I like the idea of this restaurant, but it was not executed very well and so I don't know if I would come back.

Philip L.

Yelp
This is such a classy charming place. Incredible for a date or just a quiet relaxing time.

Keren C.

Yelp
Brüt, an offshoot of the original Grape + Bean at this location, is a welcomed addition to the Old Town scene. It's a nice after work wind down and should definitely be on your list of drop-in spots on spring/summer weekend walks down King St if you enjoy wine, champagne, &/or beer. They have a great selection and the staff is quick, ready, and willing to help you decide on a drink to please your palette & pair with your plate. Speaking of food, the small plates & sandwiches are well thought out & well crafted. There are a variety of cheese & charcuterie options, as well as tapas and large plates. Nothing on the menu is particularly heavy but everyone in my party left satiated (even the men!). I can vouch for the goat cheese & olive tapenade crostini; it's as flavorful as it sounds. Other options that I anticipate trying are the Truffled Egg Toast & Ensalada Espanol... Stop in, get a glass of wine & a quick bite. It's a small space but a great atmosphere. Enjoy!

Mark H.

Yelp
Awesome as usual. The thing I love about Brut is the atmosphere created by the staff that helps/makes people get together. The conversations with "strangers", who won't remain that way for long, are what makes this place what it is.

Kaye C.

Yelp
Great service. Considerate recommendations. Great food. How have I not known about you all this time? Yummy. You need to have everything on the menu.

Lilian H.

Yelp
I love this place! Secret hidden gem in Old town. Small, very very intimate wine bar with good food options. Overall a very welcoming and warm environment. The owner is a cherry on top. He definitely takes the time to speak to you and delivers the best service he can. Although it's a tiny place, the noise level is not bad. You are able to hold a conversation and enjoy yourself with out being annoyed by loud conversation.

Lee M.

Yelp
Immaculate vibes. Little candle lit tables that are perfect for a night out with your mans. We arrived with 5min left until the kitchen stopped serving, our waiter made us aware and was very accommodating to our food requests. Everything came out quicker than expected and was delicious (we got the deviled eggs, Mac n cheese, and a cheese/charcuterie board). Their charcuterie was top notch and beautifully displayed. Would highly recommend this for your old town pre-dinner (or actual dinner) spot :)

Svetlana L.

Yelp
I am not exactly sure why is this place rated so well. Their service is quite bad, I was never even offered water for the hour and a half there. There is not a single french item on the menu, even on the cheese section. The majority of the items is Spanish if anything. I really expected a little more sophisticated menu to compliment champagne, than sandwiches and burgers.

Terry M.

Yelp
Stopped by because we saw it open. Been trying to get to this place for years and so funny that during a quarantine I'm finally able to stop by. Friendly service, excellent collection and reasonably priced. Can't wait until quarantine is over to get the full experience. Will definitely be back and highly recommend if you need a bottle of wine to better enjoy quarantine.

Chandani C.

Yelp
We were celebrating my friend closing on a new home and what better way than drinking champagne! We found this place on Yelp and headed right over. We were a group of 3 and I got there first. I went ahead and got glass of prosecco to start. It was soo good! Later, once my friends arrived, we ordered a champagne flight. I tried really hard to pick a favorite, but all 3 of them were so good - I think a flight is definitely the way to go here. We ordered bits of food through out the evening including their fresh goat cheese and olive tapenade, raclette, gambas al ajillo, and the BLT. Again, hard to pick a favorite because they were all equally delicious and fresh! I wish the garlic for the gambas was cooked just a little bit more, but it really was no big deal. The ambiance of the place is really cute and intimate. It was kinda of empty when I first got there around 6pm on a Friday, but it was packed by the time we left. Our waitress, Christina, was the sweetest! She really took good care of us and was so much fun to talk to! :)

Kavita B.

Yelp
We dropped by on Dec 31st, 2020, to buy a bottle of champagne. The tables were all full with dine-in customers, but there was no crowd at the register. At first the woman behind the bar ignored us entirely. When we asked for help she said she'd be right with us. She was pouring wine for a table. After she was done, she walked by and back to the bar and continued to ignore us, then walked by us again to chat with the customers who she'd just poured wine for. After about 10 minutes of waiting and trying to make eye contact with her, someone else came over to help us. We told him we wanted a very dry champagne, nothing sweet. He asked us again about how sweet we wanted it, and we said again, that we wanted something dry. He sold us a bottle of very sweet, not smooth, hard to swallow champagne from Lanson. It wasn't an expensive bottle, around $54, but it tasted like the warm Korbel that I drank in college during the 80s when I was broke. For future champagne needs I'll shop at supermarkets that have the brands I am familiar with (Heidsieck, Moet, and Clicquot) instead of trying to support a small business who obviously doesn't value my support.

Eva B.

Yelp
This is my go-to in Old Town for a perfect glass of champagne and snacks. When the weather is nice, the outdoor seating is the best way to spend an afternoon and is also very dog-friendly! Dustin is kind, knowledgable and just the best. I always discover something new and also highly recommend the champagne tastings they organize. So grateful a place like this exists in the neighborhood!

Jason R.

Yelp
Brut is a fabulous champagne and wine bar tucked into an Old Towne neighborhood. Its close enough for the tourista to find off King Street, but really can be considered a local's place. It goes without saying that the champagne and wine selections hit everyone's taste and budget, but the real surprise was the food. The meat and cheese selections were not only interesting, but paired well. The garlic shrimp is not to be missed! Brut is a definite date night or quiet evening. However, call ahead for events to ensure your space. Dustin can only do so much to accommodate.

Martha N.

Yelp
Such a cool place!!! My husband stopped here for dinner and had a wonderful experience. We both ordered the Champagne flight/sampler (three total). The waiter was very thorough in explaining each one to us. He offered to bring each of us one at a time so that they wouldn't get warm. We opted to have them all at once, they didn't last long enough to get warm . They were delish!!! We ordered the goat cheese and olive tapenade for an appetizer. Amazing!!! I'm a huge olive fan as well as a goat cheese fan. So, why not?‍ For dinner my husband ordered the bolognese. I tired a bite, and dear heavens that was delicious! It tasted similar to bolognese we had in Italy! For me, Racelette won my dinner decision. I added salami, and it did not disappoint! It was delicious, plus totally social media worthy! It was a daily special, but we order a slice of pear pie for dessert topped with, you guessed it, ice cream! Everything was delicious! Cool atmosphere and very friendly as well as informative waitstaff!

Yelp
When I heard a new champs bar had opened in Old town, I knew I had to investigate. Except it isn't new. It's the same place as Grape & Bean, same management, same everything. Looking at the website, it's somewhat confusing because it sounds as though it's at a different, sister location but it's still in the same small little bar as Grape & Bean on Royal street. When I arrived there was no greeting. Such a pet peeve of mine. I finally had to ask if I could seat myself and was answered 'sure' very stuffily. Okayyyy. So here's the thing about this place. It's JUST so freaking small inside. You can literally hear every single conversation, communal tables so you are seated directly next to the other parties, and the tables themselves are very small. The owner, who is French, finally came up to me and went through his pretentious schpeil. I found him the entire night to be quite rude but perhaps it was just a cultural thing. My friend and I ended up trying the aged Champagne flights, which was really the only redeeming thing about this place. Very interesting to see and taste the differences btwn an 18 month champ and a 20 year champ. We also ordered a couple plates, bacon wrapped dates and the raclette. Both perfectly fine, nothing spectacular. And it's a pricey place, so you're going to spend some coin here for premium wine and champagne. Which would normally be fine but for me, the ambiance just does not cut it. This place is so tight and cramped and you can hear the acoustics and voices throughout the entire place that it begs for much more intimacy & privacy. The clientele was mainly couples and older folk, not to mention the stuffy, unfriendly service. For my money, I'd rather go down the street to Sonoma cellars where there is higher energy, friendlier service and you can sit out back on the lovely patio with more privacy.

Richard C.

Yelp
Excellent selection of champagnes at surprisingly good prices. Also the blue cheese bacon stuffed dates was amazing. Friendly staff and cool owner!

Melina C.

Yelp
The side effects of staffing shortages are obvious at BRUT. The severs were uninviting and could care less that we were present. I had to get my own drinks (cooler). I would wait until they trained their current staff or hired more before dining here.

Berit M.

Yelp
What a cute little spot! We stopped here for an impromptu snack during a girls getaway to Old Town. In addition to our delicious wine, we had the butternut squash soup which was out of this world. (Note: I believe the menu changes so may not always be available.) Small, but beautifully decorated interior. Highly recommend checking it out.

Meredith A.

Yelp
This is a cute little place in OTA. I love champagne so this was perfect spot for me. I ordered the sparkling rose which was a generous pour. The one thing that I gave this 3 stars were the menu options. I ordered the pea pesto crostini based on the rec from the server. I sent it back because it was not appetizing. Luckily they took it off the check. I recommend here if you are not eating!

Kurt H.

Yelp
I really want to give this pls e a great score, but the service was non-existent. I never was able tj sample anything. I/we were the second couple that waited 10+ min without even a "hello". After the first couple got fed up and left, we decided s few min after to do the same. There are plenty of places to enjoy downtown. Might try here again, but no time soon.

Jacob H.

Yelp
When you find your " go to" place that's a good thing. Brut has become just that. My husband and I have recently moved to Alexandria and have fallen in love with Brut. Lovely wine selection, delicious food, and a great place to meet the locals. Love it!

Patricia D.

Yelp
Beautiful sampling of champagne...the flight is definitely worth it! Excellent quality...enjoyed the samples and will be back!

Billy T.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, great food, and great drinks. Just a little pricey for the portions. Would recommend charcuterie and wine while sitting outside.

Kat K.

Yelp
The intimacy of this spot is it's saving grace. The wine & champagne is so-so, low average at best. The place actually smelled. Supposedly cheese?? There's so much potential, I suggest you purchase a coravin and offer finer wines by the glass to start. Then build from there. :)

Gary L.

Yelp
Brut is the bomb! Did I say that right? Anyway, I really love this place. Dustin is amazing. Wines are amazing. And it is as friendly as "Cheers" if "Cheers" was a high-class wine bar. Plenty of Alexandria locals love this refuge from the typical King Street places filled with tourists- not that there is anything wrong with tourists. But Brüt is in a class by itself. Unique. Quiet. Delicious. Tucked away and special. Find it. You owe yourself.

Erin C.

Yelp
My husband and I came in about a 1 hr before closing. We got a champagne tasting and a glass of red. We never felt rushed. The staff were amazing, the wine was fantastic, and Dustin specifically was great to talk to about anything and everything to do with wine. They clearly care about connecting with their clients.

Nat D.

Yelp
I find myself going back to Brut time and time again. Poor Old Town, I'll never get around to trying any other place. Dustin is so kind and funny. His place is a 10/10 already, but he puts it over the top. I've experienced so many other types of wine outside of my comfort zone because of his recommendations. My favorite place in the DMV

Heather S.

Yelp
The charcuterie and cheese board was nice. Artichoke dip was amazing. I will be back. I only wish they had more comfy type chairs to relax in while snacking and drinking wine.

Abby L.

Yelp
Awesome experience and owner. Get the $25 champagne tasting! Lovely little date night spot.

Sarah P.

Yelp
Love this place. The owner is super friendly, the food and wine is always amazing and the ambiance makes it feel like home.

kathleen c.

Yelp
Love Love Love this little gem in Old Town. Went here with my husband for a cocktail before we were having dinner in Hummingbird. Dustin was very gracious and pick us a beautiful Rose Champagne to go with a few appetizers we ordered. It is a cozy intimate place with a beautiful interior. You can also just go there and purchase a bottle of wine or Champagne to take him. Huge selection of both. will definitely be back here on a regular basis.

Jess R.

Yelp
The Prosecco was good, but the authenticity of Dustin's Spanish garlic shrimp dish catapulted me back to when I lived in Southern Spain and ate them in a weekly basis! Yummmmmy! I'm still fantasizing about it 24 hours later. The ambiance is next to none if you are lucky enough to score a stool--real estate is competitive, so go on an off night: Sunday's, Wednesday's, and Saturday early afternoons. Seemed to be plenty of street parking, but who cares--I'd slit a beeatch for some more garlic shrimp. You won't regret.
