"This Glassell Park cafe from well-known bread icons Bub & Grandma’s is a cute homage to the American diner, complete with cushy white booths, a wrap-around counter and a rotating pie case. While the lunch menu has more sandwiches on it (we like the mustard-y tuna salad and veggie-stacked antipasti), the best one overall is served at breakfast: the egg and cheese. "We've been known to stock up on baked goods from Bub & Grandma’s pastry case with the intensity of a doomsday prepper at an army surplus store. But as much as we love their fancy brandied currant morning bun and black sesame bostock, this Glassell Park bakery also nails what we call a Homer Simpson donut, the kind topped with chocolate frosting and rainbow sprinkles or filled with custard-y boston cream. "Hot take: Most breakfast sandwiches (even the good ones) tend to taste pretty similar. But after our first bite of the one at Bub & Grandma’s, we knew it was special. There isn’t anything wild going on—just pillowy eggs, American cheese, mayo, and ketchup on a soft kaiser bun. But the simple, high-quality ingredients stacked in the correct ratios are what makes this sandwich so delicious. "“Now that I live on the Westside, I rarely make my way [east] unless it's for food. That being said, this sandwich makes the one hour trek more than worth it! I was a bit hesitant to order [it] since I have never had meatloaf (which makes me nostalgic for my childhood school lunches) served in a sandwich. I am so glad I did. The orange pomegranate glaze wasn’t the least bit overwhelming and complimented the meatloaf perfectly, but the star of the dish has to be the house made challah. Though I usually go for toasted bread, the challah’s softness worked so well with the addition of crunch from chips and pickles in the sandwich. The simplicity of the sandwich overall paired with the textural elements makes every bite a delicious and comforting one." - brennan carley
