"Shrimp and grits, fried chicken and waffles, biscuits, and pimento mac and cheese — you’d probably picture devouring these Southern delights in an elbows-on-the-table spot. At Bubba, managing partner Chris Diebel uses the dishes to pay homage to his Southern roots, but does so in a date night-worthy atmosphere beneath sparkly chandeliers. The restaurant also boasts one of the largest bourbon lists in the corn-loving state. Don’t end your meal without the hummingbird cake or whiskey pecan pie — or both." - Karla Walsh

A few friends and I went on a random night and we were able to be seated immediately. We sat outside and the ambiance was so beautiful. From the lighting, the music, and the decor, it felt so cozy and welcoming. It was the perfect spot for a drink and some apps! Our server was friendly, professional, and helpful in guiding us on what to order from the drinks to the food. They have a great drink menu that serves all different types of cocktails and beers, so everyone can enjoy any type of drink they please. We didn't want a meal, so we ordered a few appetizers and they filled us up quickly. I'm a huge fan of Deviled Eggs (and a tough critic) and they have great Eggs! The crispy bacon on top was pure perfection. The Mac and Cheese is very creamy and soft. Their French fries are tasty and include a variety of dipping sauces. The mac and cheese bites were okay but nothing outstanding in my opinion. The homemade biscuits with jam and butter were also a good choice but not something I'd have to have again. Overall, great place with, a beautiful setting with clean bathrooms and professional staff members. I recommend sitting outside on their patio area when it's open for the season. It's a beautiful atmosphere!

First visit last night, and we’ll definitely be back! Had the Cajun pasta and the meatloaf-both extremely full of flavor. Dessert we had the hummingbird Cake which was also amazing. The frosting was that perfect cream cheese frosting. Service was great. We will most definitely be back when we come through town.

Bubba is a nice place, great atmosphere, the staff were friendly and did an excellent job. Restaurant was clean, restrooms were clean and lighting was good. Parking, meh, typical downtown (meter or garage). Appetizers: deviled eggs, fried green tomatoes and the pimento cheese board were all excellent. I had the jambalaya, WAY TOO MUCH cajun seasoning. It was so over powering that I could only eat half of it. Almost everyone else liked their dish. We had a big group. Will try something else next time.

Really, chic spot with southern food served elevated. The service was ok, I'm surprised the waitress did not make suggestions or initiate conversation. It was our 1st time there, and we kept having to ask about items or suggestions. Don't get me wrong, she was courteous but kinda felt like we were forcing the conversation. She did check in on us and kept our drinks topped off, but just know what you want or look at reviews prior. Appetizers: 1 Bread basket. Biscuits were the best I had. I wanted to go slap the chef and get the recipe. It also comes with cornbread muffins. I enjoyed them. However, they were on the sweet side and more like corn cupcakes. They were served with a lovely strawberry jam and whipped honey butter. 2 Pimento cheese board. This was a random assortment of nibbles. I can't say they went together, but they were all good alone. Sypeisingly, I was not impressed by the pimento cheese, but my companion was raving about it. I'm not a big cheese person, so I'll take their word for it. My favorite was the pickled green beans, carrots, and cauliflower! There was also mustard w honey, candies, pecans, bread and butter pickles, creame cheese, something, and buttermilk crackers. The buttermilk crackers seemed like thin versions of the biscuits. MAIN COURSE: 3 Chicken and dumplings. Not your traditional dumplings as the dough is rolled out and cut in strips about 3mm thick noodles. The broth was excellent and was served with a lovely salad. 4 Chicken and waffles. You must get as the chicken and waffles were fantastic! Sadly, we were too stuffed for dessert, but overall, a must go spot in Des Moines.

Came for a late dinner, and the restaurant was not very busy. We ordered the deviled eggs sans bacon, chicken fried steak, and the mushroom pot pie. The deviled eggs were really nice (not outstanding. Maybe the bacon adds something) and I'm told that the chicken fried steak was delightful. The mushroom pot pie, though, was really lemony and acidic. I would not recommend it. Maybe the other vegetarian items are better, but I had higher expectations than usual for Bubba, and I left disappointed. Our server was also very scarce near the end of the meal. I would have said something about my dish, but he never came back to ask. 🤷‍♀️ Overall, the experience was underwhelming.

Fantastic did, great service, and very reasonable prices for high quality dining. Crab cakes were spot on. Cajun pasta is incredible! Jambalaya is great as well. For dessert, definitely get the pecan pie or hummingbird cake. It was our anniversary and we got a free dessert!

Visited here while traveling for work. A coworker found it and suggested it. We weren’t disappointed. We started with old fashions. They were mixed well. Then had deviled eggs. Definitely recommend. I had chicken fried steak and coworker did buttermilk fried chicken. We both had plenty of food and weren’t disappointed. Quite tasty!!! Our server was present but not over bearing. The restaurant has a nice open atmosphere and not too loud even with a lot of people there. Make a stop. You won’t be disappointed.

Beware they charge to use credit card. Overall good food but our waitress seemed like she didn't want to be there. She didn't inform us of the fees. Yes it's on the receipt but generally people only look at the prices of food. She also didn't inform our daughter the hot fried chicken is doused in hot sauce vs in the batter so my daughter didn't enjoy that either. The portions are generous. My husband did like the frog legs and I thought the fried chicken did taste good. We rarely eat southern food so it's pretty good for being in the Midwest. Please know customers hate added fees. It's a cost of business that you can write off that business expense, customer's can't so don't nickel and dime them, especially when you are going to take their money to pay your fees and write it off anyway
