Bubba Gump was the leading dinner of our 2022 Denver vacation. Dining here made sense considering it was a block from the Homewood Suites where we were staying and the brand had name recognition with us.
I am no stranger to Bubba Gump. My patronage dates back to 2011 when we dined at the New Orleans location [out of business]. The visits continued with the Chicago location which I rated three stars in August 2012 [out of business], and several visits to the Las Vegas location which I rated four stars on January 15, 2013. What had me going back to Bubba Gump, with the exception of one time that I ordered the Pho Boy, is their Shrimper's Heaven. This has been my go-to dish here. However, as of this review, I have to say that is was my go-to dish.
We have all heard of shrinkflation. Apparently Bubba Gump is using a form of it that I call shrimpflation. The Shrimper's Heaven which is now truly the Shrimper's Pergatory has been reduced from four shrimp varieties to three. Unfortunately, for this seafood lover, they eliminated the grilled shrimp, leaving three varieties of fried shrimp in an underwhelming portion on a basket that looks like an overpriced Long John Silvers. This shrimpflation costs $23.49 plus taxes and cost of a beverage and tip. It features fried shrimp, coconut shrimp, tempura shrimp, fries, and sauces.
The grilled shrimp was not the only thing missing in action. The attention to the the theming was also nonexistent. There was a time when I went to a Bubba Gump where the server would explain that turning the table sign to say "Stop Forest Stop" meant it was time for a drink refill. Back a few years ago, the theming was so aggressive to the borderline of annoying. Back then, the server would sit by us for a few minutes asking Forest Gump trivia questions. It kind of made me want to switch the table sign to "Run Forest Run!" So, I could do without the aggressive theming. However, the shrimpflation is another story.
Despite the lack of the theme that made Bubba Gump a unique dining experience, our server was friendly and on top of her job. There were zero issues with cola refills.
When I left Bubba Gump, I was disappointed that they eliminated a quarter of the Shrimper's Heaven dish. If I return to a Bubba Gump, it will be time to try another dish. This shrimpflation which is not priced reasonably, does not make me say "Run Daniel Run..... back to a Bubba Gump."
