Traverse City’s Best Restaurants, Bars, and Cafes | Eater Detroit

"Named for the owner’s Jewish grandmother, Bubbie’s opened its doors in February 2020 and instantly became a beloved addition to the community. The sourdough-started bagels are boiled and baked, and take four days to make. While the Super Nova, with scallion cream cheese, Nova lox, pickled red onion, capers, and micro dill is a fan favorite, a whole wheat bagel with one of the shop’s seasonal cream cheeses — ramp, local maple, or blueberry lemon zest — is not to be missed. Online ordering is available." - Stacey Brugeman

Google
We are visitors in the area and wanted fresh bagels so searched online and headed over. Oh 👏🏼 my👏🏼 gosh👏🏼!! First impression/thought: people swarm here because there’s a line. Second: what a cute atmosphere with very well thought of placement of tables and merchandise to ensure the line moves fast and efficiently. Third: I feel like this must be the happiest little bagel shop in the world because the staff is fun and engaging while still being very proficient. Seriously, this place works like clockwork. That’s all great, but what about the product? It’s grab and go, so be prepared for that. I had the Nosh on Parmesan black pepper, and I absolutely love that they use local bacon. (Support your small business community!) I promise I’m telling the truth when I tell you I looked at this sandwich and my mouth fell open. It was beautiful. The melted cheese strung across as I pulled the two halves of sandwich apart, I saw the crispy outing of the bagel with its moist, soft inside. There was plenty of thick cut bacon, cooked perfectly, not fatty at all. I tore a small piece of bagel off just to try it by itself and it was delicately crispy and chewy- the literal perfect bagel. The ratio to everything created deliciousness! No one in my party could eat more than half their sandwiches in one sitting, they were so big, so well worth the roughly $12 price tag per sandwich because it made 2 meals. We will definitely be going back to Bubbie’s Bagels in the future!

Google
I had the veggie bagel and it was delicious, very flavorful. I will say the bagel itself was very hard to chew but overall still great. The staff were amazing! Definitely try bubbies out but plan some extra time in because at times there is a long line!

Google
These bagels rival NYC…as a previous NYC resident, my expectations for bagels are pretty high. This place delivered! Days later I am still thinking about and craving the garden sandwich! Next time I’m in TC, I’m coming here first thing!

Kate McGrath

Google
Just as good, if not better than any New York bagel i’ve ever had!! We all got the nosh on an everything bagel and it was amazing. Best thing we ate all weekend!! The flavor and texture of the bagel was perfect. We ate them in the park across the street. Don’t pass on Bubbie’s!!

Google
10/10! Order two of the Nosh on everything bagels. I subbed the scallion cream cheese on one of the bagels for jalapeño cream cheese and it did not disappoint. The bacon took the sandwich to a whole other level. Service was great. The person that took our order was so friendly and knowledgeable. Can’t wait to return in the future!

Google
Good stuff! Got one of their more classic breakfast sandwiches, and they are hefty as well as tasty! Many people were rotating in and out of the congested interior. That often makes it kind of fun to me but won’t be loved by everyone. 4 stars because I want to feel like a sandwich like that has a wow-factor leaving me so glad I went and maybe wanting to go back the next day. Not disappointed, but also not sure I’d return. They were decently fast and the service was great!

Jessie Klisz

Google
Delicious & exactly what we were looking for! The April special dill pickle cream cheese was exceptional and not too “dill-y” and the class nosh bagel sandwich was a 10/10. We are looking forward to stopping in the next time we are in TC!

Marianna Chubaruk

Google
I had the lox bagel — it was really good. The drip coffee, however, was very weak. There isn’t much standing room while you wait, but they got the food out quickly, so it wasn’t a problem. If you’re looking for a solid lox bagel, this is definitely a great spot to check out.

Yelp
Our absolute favorite bagel ANYWHERE. When we travel this is the breakfast to beat, and years later it is still our favorite breakfast sandwich. They are always busy, but you can order ahead online. The service is great, they are helpful and friendly and our food is ready fairly quickly. We get the Nosh consistently, but their specials impress every time. We even bought t-shirts one year! 10/10 would not miss Bubbies Bagels in Traverse City.

Yelp
Delicious! As an East Coaster who's wound up in CA, where they try to pass off round bread with holes as bagels, it was so refreshing and life affirming to have a proper bagel, and be able to bring a baker's dozen home! We also got tees, a spreader, and stickers.

Yelp
Very friendly staff (gave us a couple great winery recommendations as well). Came in on a Saturday morning, encountered a short line which moved pretty quickly. Wait time was reasonable. Sipped on the BEST pumpkin spice hot chocolate while waiting for our bagels. Ordered the Nova Lox on zaatar bagel and veggie on caraway rye. Both bagel sandwiches were delicious however a bit chewier than expected. None of their bagels are toasted since they are made fresh daily. No indoor seating so definitely plan to take your bagel to go. Would recommend to anyone visiting Traverse City for a quick breakfast!
google avatar

Sabrina R.

Yelp
These were excellent bagel sandwiches! I only wish they had a location with an option to sit-down. You can tell they are popular, the line is constantly very long. They also sell day old bagels by the half dozen at a steep discount. Staff were all extremely friendly.
google avatar

Yelp
10/10 bagel in Traverse City, MI. Service was great and speedy. Small indoor space to order when it gets busy but service was quick! The menu had a great selection of bagels, spreads, and to go cream cheese, etc.
google avatar

Aleksandar S.

Yelp
The service here has always been great, they are military friendly, and their bagels are the best in town! The salt stick is to die for, and my dogs love the dog bagels! I would give more stars if I could.

Yelp
Went to this place once and it was awesome! I was excited to come back. However, I ordered a bagel to go today with egg salad, pickled onion, capers, and cucumbers and got home to find a completely dry bagel with just the veggies and NO egg salad. Needless to say, I'm left hungry and disappointed. I also find it strange that they would send a customer home with a bagel with no cream cheese, egg salad, or anything on it but veggies...? At the end of the day, it just sucks to not get what you paid for.
google avatar

Kyle R.

Yelp
Bagels are crispy on the outside, soft and pillowy on the inside. Fun and friendly service punctuates this shop chock full of history. Worth the stop for breakfast or lunch.
google avatar

Pratik P.

Yelp
We stopped and waited about 10 minutes to order a Lox bagel and a BLT on a Zatar bagel with Jalpeno cream cheese. The BLT was great, and the heirloom tomato was fabulous. There was a lot going on, but great flavor. We took them to go and had half in the car and half at Sleeping Dunes. They were great bagels and sandwich combinations. Nice job!
google avatar

Stephanie H.

Yelp
We stopped in for a The Nosh, that scallion cream cheese really make the bagel. Great customer service, and really yummy bagels.
google avatar

Jeongmin H.

Yelp
As a jersey gal I have high standards for bagels but bubbies really lived up to its hype! Would recommend ordering ahead to avoid waiting in a ridiculously long line.
google avatar

Roger C.

Yelp
Just like I remember in NJ. Crunchy outside and soft inside. Online order the way to go on a busy day.
google avatar

Jack A.

Yelp
This was a decent bagel, but it would've been better if they imported their water from New York. They claim to be a New York bagel, but it's very dense. All in all it was good! I love the info on the windows and staff was very pleasant.
google avatar

Jessica M.

Yelp
If I lived in traverse city I would weigh 1,000 pounds because I would want to eat a bagel every day. So good. So so so good! The bagel sandwiches are amazing, we tried the seasonal BLT, the nosh and bubbies garden. All amazing. They get busy- fast, so be prepared for a wait during the summer hours.
google avatar

Marc P.

Yelp
Great local bagel place! Top notch customer service and lgbtq+ friendly! Best bagel place we have found in Traverse City.
google avatar

Eowyn K.

Yelp
Just like we'd have at my Bubbies. I go every time I'm in Traverse City. Ordering ahead on the app is super easy and then you just have to grab your order off the shelf inside, skipping the line. However, I found out recently that in high season they do not do online ordering on the weekends. I generally get the supernova, lox, pickled red onion (oh, man!), dill and pea shoots, with green onion cream cheese, without the capers. My friend loves the garden, fresh with veggies. You can pick the type of bagel as well. They really load it with toppings, so I do have to take it apart to have a side at a time, nice shmear as well. Their bagels are traditional and dense, so if this is not your preference, you may be less enamored than we are.
google avatar

Nicolette R.

Yelp
I 100% recommend to stop by here if you're ever in Traverse City, Michigan! Their fresh bagels and loads of cream cheese were to die for. A lot of people ordered online to which they had a huge shelf for those orders, but the wait isn't too long. I was browsing their multiple displays of chocolates, everything bagel seasoning, and different flavors of cream cheese for purchase that I lost track of how long I was waiting for. Their breakfast sandwich was much larger than I was expecting (bang for your buck). The bacon was a little smoky but the scallion cream cheese was my favorite part. The raspberry cream cheese on their specials menu was delicious, too (and so pink!). Let me just explain how amazing the bagels are. The outside is golden brown and crispy but the inside is so fluffy and chewy. I tried the plain bagel and the onion bagel and they were both great.
google avatar

Navapat K.

Yelp
We stopped by on our last day trip in Traverse City, the place was busy, food was great but the guy who was the server was a little pain in a butt. I personally love their bagels it was salty in the way that I love! Egg salad was a little mess but yumm!
google avatar

Rupali K.

Yelp
The line is big, so order online if you are in a rush. One of the breakfast places opened on Sunday and Monday. I ordered egg without meat and garden sandwitch with everything bagel and jelepeno cheese. Bagels are a little dense for my taste. It is also messy to eat grab napkins and plates while eating.

Kath C.

Yelp
The bagels are legit. So tasty. The rye was my favorite and my husband raved about the whole wheat with the vegan schmear. Service was quick and organized. Definitely worth a stop.
google avatar

Kelly G.

Yelp
Great bagels. Friendly people. Just a little disappointed that my bagel was completely wrong order. Weren't very busy - probably an honest mistake. I'll go back though because the quality was spot on.

Aja T.

Yelp
Most amazing bagel i've had in my life! Fresh ingredients that all complemented eachother. And lovely, helpful staff members.
google avatar

Raagini Y.

Yelp
Excellent bagels. The jalapeño cream cheese is actually way better than the scallion cream cheese. Could have used tomatoes there wasn't enough acidity. However the texture of the bagel was excellent.
google avatar

Sarah M.

Yelp
YUM! If you love bagel sandwiches, go here!! We got a tuna shmelt on an everything and super nova on za'atar. Both were delicious, but they are messy. The cream cheese is velvety, they don't skimp on toppings, the fresh herbs add a nice brightness. We took ours to the park & ate by the water (glad to have brought napkins!). Good variety of bagel flavors, some traditional & some more unusual. They also provide "dog bagels" and a bag of day-old bagels for $5. There's an order ahead option if you need that.
google avatar

Patches O.

Yelp
Great little bagel shop with a good selection of cream cheese and bagels and the service was great. Real happy guy at the register

Yelp
Bubbies never disappoints! I come here everytime Im in TC and everytime I am greeted by the friendly staff and AWESOME bagels. The only bagel I've had up north that competes with NYC. Get the NOSH, you won't regret it.

Kelsey S.

Yelp
Holy hell these bagels are good. We stayed in TC over the weekend and I had it on my list to check this place out. We were not disappointed. When we walked up we saw a line outside which is both a good sign and usually a bummer, but it moved really fast. My husband got the Nosh and I got an everything with veggie cream cheese, both of which were delicious. All of the ingredients were super high quality expertly crafted. The bagel itself was chewy and delicious. I can see now why there was a line. 10/10, would recommend.
google avatar

Gale R.

Yelp
They have a great selection of bagels with both classic and interesting flavors, including zataar and Parmesan pepper. The bagels are an authentic chewy texture. They have fresh cream cheese with different flavors. We really enjoyed the scallion cream cheese, as well as the vegetable cream cheese even though there was a long line service was quick. We enjoyed are bagels greatly.
google avatar

Angie L.

Yelp
Native East Coast gal here, I can say I'm a bagel snob. I am obsessed with this place. If you get the chance read the back story as well. Very family oriented and inspired. Also, if you get a bagel sandwich, you can definitely share with someone. I had to split mine between two days. This place is packed. The line was out the door. I'd recommend coming early or expecting to wait a few minutes.
google avatar

Anna N.

Yelp
I wish I could go back to my first bite of these bagels. We ordered a Supernova, Tuna Shmelt, and a Nasty Nosh. A must try in Traverse City, however go early or order for pick up cause there WILL be a line and they do sell out!
google avatar

2Sisters1Fork Z.

Yelp
These bagels are thiccccc! If you are in the Traverse City area, you must try this cute bagel spot!!
google avatar

Caroline S.

Yelp
Coming from NJ I have high expectations for a bagel. This place meets my bagel desires!!!! We had the BLT and the nosh bagel sandwiches and were extremely happy. We were greeted by staff as soon as we entered the store. The store front also hosts a few local food crafters and specialty items. . Overall a cute store with friends staff and yummy bagels!!! Make this a must stop when in Traverse City

Andy J.

Yelp
What a find in Traverse City! Be sure to order ahead if possible. My wife, daughter and I had Bagel Sandwiches. They each had The Nosh - one on a sesame bagel and one on a plain bagel. They loved them. I had The Super Nova on an everything bagel. I was just going to eat half of mine, saving half for later. However, it was so good I ate the whole thing. We were set for the day. Can't wait to return to sample their other offerings.
google avatar

Rebecca L.

Yelp
Best bagel sandwich I've ever had- will be back anytime that I am in the TC area. Definitely a popular place, however we went on a Saturday morning around 10:30 and only waited about 5 minutes. I got the Nosh on a sesame seed bagel!

John H.

Yelp
Best bagels that I have had. Very true to the original flavor and texture of NYC bagels. A very close second are Big Apple Bagels. Both are excellent. Traverse City is lucky to have two great choices.
google avatar

Dave W.

Yelp
I'll admit it...I am a self-proclaimed New York bagel snob. Although I have spent my entire adult life in the Midwest, when people ask me if there is anything I miss about New York, good bagels is always at the top of the list. I ver would have expected to find one of the better bagel places in the Midwest in Traverse City! This place as just a short walk from our hotel so I had to give it a try and it lived up to all of my expectations. I had an everything bagel with the lox spread and it was outstanding! This place was a sizable operation and I was impressed by their sign that told customers that toasting a fresh bagel was not recommended My only complaint was that there was simply too much cream cheese on the bagel. I'll be sure to stop in again the next time I'm in TC!
google avatar

Marin C.

Yelp
We have a paperwork blizzard day at work about every 5 1/2 - 6 weeks, to compensate for this chaos, we usually drown our sorrows in saint carbohydrate. Thanks for being our bagel saviour. I am particularly partial to the plain, cinnamon raisin and everything bagels. Om nom noms.

Sara N.

Yelp
This place was soooo good! The person at the register was so kind and had amazing customer service. Both bagel sandwiches we got were delicious. The Zaatar bagel was a must try!

Emily G.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious! Line moved quick and bagels came out fast. We got the supernova and nosh - both 10/10!

Madison D.

Yelp
Best bagel ever. Friendly staff. Cool vibe. Will definitely come back to TC just for this bagel.

Reba Z.

Yelp
Yes mam! This place is delicious. Stopped here on our way out of town to grab for the road. The sandwiches are large... we could've shared, but now we have lunch too! Wish I would've brought a vat of their scallion cream cheese home with me. Service was excellent. Food was ready in minutes.
google avatar

Aparna B.

Yelp
Yummy bagels but kinda messy to eat! They also have a ton of vegetarian options which is always a plus! I liked that you could order ahead, and then walk in, pick up your bag/order and walk out sine they aren't allowing people to sit and eat inside. I was able to customize a bagel to not only make vegetarian, but also add a few more ingredients to it! if you need a quick breakfast or pick up on the way in/out of town, I'd highly recommend this place!
google avatar

Mckenze S.

Yelp
Very small inside and there isn't seating. But that's okay bc it's more of a takeout place. The nosh bagel with veggie cream cheese was a 10/10!!! These are big sandwhich too. I was stuffed.
google avatar

Sam G.

Yelp
Great NY style crispy crust bagels. Bagels tasting like they know what they are doing. Good selection of bagels and smears.... Service was friendly and quick
google avatar

Jiamin A.

Yelp
Best place to get NY style bagel here in TC. I usually order via DoorDash and it's super fast and yummy each time.
google avatar

Yelp
Wow- Bubbies Bagels not only lived up to the hype but exceeded it! We weren't sure if they would even be open because we went during a really intense snow storm, but upon entering we were welcomed with warmth and friendly greetings. We had never been before, and the employees were happy and eager to explain the menu and choices to us. My husband had never had lox before, but tried the pastrami lox and fell in love. Their bagels are perfectly chewy and delicious, their cream cheese is thick and flavorful and just overall amazing. Not a single thing I could say about this place other than GO THERE! We're not from the area but everyone local that we asked suggestions for a quick breakfast from immediately offered Bubbies as their answer and we now know why. They had bags of "day old dozen" bagels for $5! That's awesome! And obviously fresh ones and sandwiches you have to pick from as well. I LOVE that they sell bagels for dogs as well, smaller little ones in a bag and the profits go to Cherryland Humane Society. Next time we're visiting traverse City, Bubbies is for sure one of our first stops.
google avatar

Eudora R.

Yelp
Amazing quality, nice staff, and always busy. Fresh bagels, delicious homemade cream cheese and a local vibe in the building that keeps you coming back for more.

Nancy M.

Yelp
We're from NY the bagel capital of the world. We ordered a sesame bagel with cc (smear) & an everything bagel with scallion cc. Both excellent!!! FYI we walked over from our hotel. It was during the cherry festival week, got there @8am.They sometimes sell out before 11am. Highly recommend ordering online & just picking up your order. We didn't have a wait but 10 mins after we arrived there was a line.
google avatar

Tiffany V.

Yelp
These bagels are amazing! We ordered breakfast sandwiches and loved them! We ordered a Super Nova which had scallion cream cheese, nova lox, pickled red onion, capers, and fresh baby dill. I was surprised with the amount of salmon that they served on it. You choose was kind of bagel you want it on and we chose an onion bagel. My husband said it was the best breakfast bagel he had ever eaten! We also tried The Nosh, on an everything bagel with Louie's bacon, Tillamook cheddar, egg, and scallion cream cheese. We did order both of them toasted. The bagels are so flavorful, their crunchy on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside. I highly recommend giving Bubbies a try! They have single bagels, bagels by the half or whole dozen, bagel breakfast sandwiches, brunch packs, pastries and coffee. They also sell their flavored cream cheese by the 1/2 or whole pound too. We did order coffee and it was also very good. Because of Covid you have to order online and pick up only.
