For those whining about the trail being private, a little info: Abilene Bicycle Club doesn’t own the land, the city does. They have an agreement with the city to let us use the land. It’s actually on Abilene Police training facility property, and the bike club has to carry liability insurance just to be able to allow people on the trails. This is why it isn’t open access, and why you have to pay a $30 yearly fee to ride out there. It helps cover the cost of the insurance, and it helps maintain the trail, which is all volunteer based. $30 fee for unlimited access to this trail for a whole year is actually very cheap. So why don’t you go to Biketown, get a key, and help support the location bike club? While you’re there, buy something from Biketown, as it’s one of the best bike shops I’ve ever found. Support local bike organizations and businesses folks.
As far as the trail itself goes, it is a very good trail. I’ve ridden most trails in Texas and it holds up against all but the best trails in the state IMO. It doesn’t have the elevation that other trails do, but there is plenty of tech and challenge for any rider. It’s actually a pretty advanced trail if you ride all the loops. Well maintained and well marked. Definitely worth riding if you are in the area.
