The Best Breakfast and Brunch Restaurants in Eugene, Oregon | Eater Portland

"Buddy’s off Coburg Road in north Eugene attracts serious crowds for its homestyle diner staples — flapjacks topped with sliced fruit, platters of hashbrowns and fried eggs, and slabs of crispy bacon. The interior is a throwback of vinyl booths, swivel stools, and chrome-lined tables surrounded by a hodgepodge of Beach Boys memorabilia, surfboards, and Betty Boop statues. The coffee is hot and comes with a dish of coffee creamers." - Brenna Houck

Great little diner and REALLY busy. Fresh food, good service. The potato salad was tasty. Reasonably priced, I would return. Careful paying cash out or asking for change. The young cashier didn't count out my change and shorted me $5. I laid the cash down in front of her to rectify, which she did. It was awkward though, as soon as I laid the money down she commented, "Did I short you?" Hmm, maybe count it out next time? 👍

This was a random pick for breakfast on our road trip to California. I must say I'm happy we chose this place. The astatic of the old-school diner was welcoming enough for my wife and I. Then we were greeted by a very pleasant staff and was seated immediately. Things only got even better when Stephanie a.k.a "Sunshine" our server came over and welcomed us first timers to this place. She took the time to go over everything patiently and killed us with her hilarious personality 🤣 At this point, if the food wasn't great, we were already so happy with this experience, but no way... there's more! Ms. Su shine brought our food out, and man, it was to die for. Everything was delicious. I could go on and on about our experience here, but I highly recommend that if you haven't been here, take the time to try it because you, too, will be blabbing about how great it was 😁

Google
That was some of the best food I’ve had. Went on a whim on a Sunday morning during the holiday and were seated within 5 minutes. Incredibly friendly staff. Didn’t even judge me for ordering 17 things (slightly kidding) and a milkshake for breakfast. Portions were huge and the quality was off the charts. Coming back in 2 days.

Google
The staff was so friendly! They could tell it was my first time in and everyone took the time during their breakfast rush to chat with me and ensure I was having a good meal. I highly recommend upgrading your toast to French Toast for $1.50. I can't wait to return.

Google
Such an AMAZING place! Service, food and Atmosphere was Awesome 🤩 Definitely will be back when in the area. I had the “Ruben Burger” with an upgrade to onion rings (beer battered). Finally at the end (not pictured) got the homemade cinnamon roll to split for a dessert 🤤🥰

I hadn't been to Buddy's in ages, but I had the opportunity recently. It was on a Friday around 10:00 a.m., so I hoped the morning crowd would be wrapping up. When I had 5o wait for a car to leave just to park, I knew I was wrong. There wasn't a line, but there wasn't an open table either. The very nice waitress asked if we wanted to be put on the waiting list or there was room at the bar. We chose the bar, which was nice because it was easy to get a coffee refill. Coffee is good but not the best. The food, however, is. I had the German Sausage and Swiss cheese omlett with home fries, biscuit and a side of gravy, plus a pancake. Wanted to try everything! It was all so good, the best restaurant pancake I've had in ages. And their biscuit and gravy were outstanding! I could only eat half of everything and took the rest home. Had it for breakfast the next day; still delicious! I highly recommend Buddy's Diner for breakfast!

Google
We've gone here twice and both times the food was fantastic. The first time, it was on Sunday and we had about a 20 minute wait. After we got seated, the service was fast and efficient, keeping our beverages full and hot. After we got our food, I was surprised by two things. One, the food came out fast! Two, the food was hot and delicious. This was such a change from most of the other places we've visited. The second visit was much of the same: Friendly staff and amazing food! Buddy's Diner has a lifetime customer. Keep being awesome!

Google
It's a very nice small diner, wheelchair accessible dining space, though a little narrow. Food comes in huge portions so come hungry. Breakfast was very busy and it's a very friendly environment, so keep in mind staff are doing their best going from customer to customer. Got the Chantilly Lace French Toast, biscuits and gravy, and a hot cocoa. Some sides as well. The French toast was delicious and very sweet.

Yelp
Sat down in crowded cafe...every parking space taken...my husband grumbled, "It'll be 45 minutes before they come to take our order." In five minutes, a cheerful, experienced waitress was at our table, taking our orders. My husband grumbled, "It'll be 45 minutes before we get our food." In five more minutes, two loaded plates of hot food were at our table. We've never experienced anything like this in recent years of dining out. On top of that, I made a mistake in adding the tip to the check, and they fixed it (although they could have taken advantage of my poor math)!! We plan on returning to order other items on the menu every time we're in Eugene. And the prices are reasonable! Just go there!

Yelp
Favorite breakfast food in Eugene! The French toast is outstanding, best one I've ever had, heard they make the cinnamon bread in house. Delicious pancakes, huge portions, reasonable prices, food comes out quickly. I love that they give you coffee immediately . The scramblers are excellent, do not miss out on the hash browns and the homemade warm biscuit Servers very friendly. I had to subtract a star for two reasons- first the coffee is not very good (although nice and hot!). Second they need to improve their ventilation- I have to take a shower after I eat here because I can still smell breakfast food/grease on my hair. Have heard from a few other people similar sentiments so it's not just me.

Yelp
This was my first visit to Buddy's and I loved the decor and the diner feel as soon as I walked in. I ordered California Benedict for breakfast to go. I couldn't miss the gigantic cinnamon rolls in the oven and also took on home for my family. The benedict the delicious and the portion size was huge! The hashbrowns that accompanied it were so delicious. It was one of the best benedicts that I have had in Eugene.

Yelp
Food was pretty good. I'm not a fan of processed cheeses, but for the price it was tasty. I have Buddy's Wurst Omelette with a biscuit. My husband had the Chicken Fried Steak, he said it was okay. For us the waitress made the visit. She was funny and kind. I don't know her name but we will likely return just to see her. We will probably order something different. I couldn't eat the whole biscuit, it was twice the size of any biscuit I have ever seen. So beware if you order the biscuits and gravy! The biscuit was amazing, I took that home so I could finish it. The waitress added some Marion berry syrup to go with it. She was the best!

Yelp
First timers to this diner and we've been missing out on something great. Food was fantastic, service was impeccable, and old school diner vibes. You know it's good when the establishment is packed and the people keep coming. It's definitely a family place. We saw someone giving the children stuffed animals to make them feel special and probably to keep them occupied. This place gives you good feels and makes you want to support this local business.

Yelp
Buddy's Diner is the epitome of the classic American Diner. With nostalgic memorabilia covering every surface, the obliging and serious waitstaff, and the excessive portion sizes of traditional American breakfast foods, there is something so familiar and comforting about Buddy's. There are no frills, no razzle dazzle, this is a simple and straightforward place to quickly get a filling hot meal. The food isn't exceptional, but it is just right. Diner's are something that uniquely exist within the borders of the USA and it's one American tradition that I proudly participating in.

Yelp
Excellent food. Generous portions very fast efficient service. Wait staff were very good. Nice atmosphere and clean. We were a party of 5 and got seated promptly with just a small wait

Yelp
I loved the homey vibe immediately upon arrival. Hostess friendly about helping me get my name on the list, not too long of a wait, and even though it was busy, it wasn't overly loud the way some restaurants can be. Our waitress was spectacular-gave us recommendations about menu and she was (again) friendly and efficient. I got a blueberry pancake w both maple & berry syrups (didn't have to ask for them but she offered so I said sure!) as well as a side of bacon. The bacon was not quite hot but that's my only quasi complaint. It tasted great with perfect balance of crispy and chewy. My friend enjoyed her eggs, tomato, bacon and biscuit, which I got to try! SO good. Can't wait to go back and try their skillet scrambles and hash browns. Or lunch.

Bonnie P.

Yelp
We had the Sweet pig and stuffed French toast. Our waitress was sweet and cheerful. Love the old diner vibes.

Yelp
We enjoyed our breakfast at Buddy's. Highly recommended by the front desk at our hotel, they weren't wrong. We had the Chicken Fried Steak, Berry French Toast, and split a Biscuits and Gravy. We were seated quickly, had prompt and friendly service, and the food was delicious. Worth a visit!

Yelp
Ate again @ Buddy's for lunch. As always the food was very good & the service was quick, as well as efficient! Personally, I love their "Classic".

Yelp
Friendly people and the TRUE diner experience!!! A throwback! Highly recommend...a must stop in Eugene.

Yelp
When you think of the image of a classic diner, Buddy's Diner is exactly what comes to mind. They have all of the classic menu items you want for breakfast and lunch. They have friendly waitresses and your food comes out fast and hot. We went for a late lunch. She got a hot chocolate and the eggs Benny. The hot chocolate was way too hot to drink. But the hollandaise was phenomenal.  And the egg so well poached. I got a coffee and the biscuits and gravy. The coffee was also too hot to drink, and the gravy was fantastic. The parking lot is a bit much - with multiple other businesses sharing it, but usually, you can find a spot. The restaurant is well kept and has some great memorabilia on display.

Sandra M.

Yelp
Buddy's diner it's a great place to eat.Great service , they run like a well oiled machine. Food is always hot and served quickly.

Yelp
Short: Friendly, Attentive, delicious, flavorful, and hot! Visited the week of June 3rd 2023 When we arrived, we were seated quickly and greeted with smiles. [Food] I got a Chicken fried steak sandwich. My friend got the Chicken Monterey burger. The "Chicken Monterey burger included non-breaded chicken breast, green chilis, lettuce, tomato, mayo and pepperjack cheese. [$14] The chicken fried steak sandwich was a plain chicken fried steak, special buddy's sauce, tomato, and lettuce. [overall] love buddy's it's just one of those places that takes you back to a time that's simpler and happy go lucky

Yelp
Buddy's Diner was a blast! Our waitress was extremely fun, outgoing and just a happy cheerful person. I cracked a joke at her and she ran with it and gave me comedy grief for our whole visit! That kind of personality is enough to keep me coming back regardless of the food. I was surprised to see they had a Malibu Chicken Sandwich. Haven't found a decent one of those since 1996. This one was over the top perfect and THE reason for me to go back. It came on a seedless bun with fresh cut tomato, lettuce, slice of ham with melted cheese, a honey mustard and TWO crispy chicken patties. It was so big I had to remove one chicken patty (bonus) just to have a normal sized Malibu. I also really enjoyed that extra chicken with my fries! This was spot on delicious with the crisp cold veggies and the hot crunchy crispy chicken. Get some extra napkins because this is not a dried out replica, this is the real deal. The chicken was well breaded and perfectly moist breast meat. The shoestring fries came out also nicely crispy with a side of fry sauce. Ketchup is also available on the tables. The Diner itself was a bit smaller than I anticipated, but the place was clean and well staffed. Apparently they have an extremely popular breakfast menu and I'm told it is served all day. We arrived at 11am and the breakfast crowd was still going at it. Waitstaff constantly available and assistive, busing staff constantly moving about removing empty plates. Everything flowed well, they are to be commended for keeping things flowing during a busy shift. The decor is all 1950-1960s rock-n-roll type memorabilia with Elvis pics, Beach Boys pics, surfboards, classic car grill... it's all there. My only regret is that I never went in sooner after all these years of driving by it. The chocolate malt rocked!

Yelp
New to Eugene and I've heard good things about Buddy's. We tried to go once but it was close to closing time and it was crowded so we blew it off, not all that enthusiastic to try it anyway (for no real reason). Today I'm wishing I had. We decided to give it another shot and it was SO, SO good. First off, we loved the atmosphere. It felt like a real diner and not just a place pretending to be a diner. Really cute. Second, the service was great. Everyone was super friendly and we got everything quickly. Third ... the food! I had the Stuffed French Toast with Marrionberry Compote and my partner had a double cheeseburger. It was all fantastic and we can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Yelp
Parking is AWFUL. Service was sub-par. Food is meh at best. Don't bother. I don't have anything else to say but haven't met the character requirement

Yelp
Saw a couple of TikTok videos about this place and had to check it out myself. Right away, we noticed the place was busy, most likely due to a football game the college had going on that day, however, the wait time was relatively short. The restaurant was buzzing with conversations and laughs, which brought a sense of community. Our server was super sweet and attentive (wish I would have gotten her name). We order the custom breakfast and the Classic Denver Omelette and everything was delicious. The pancakes were my favorite thing we ordered, as they were soft and fluffy. I am definitely coming back! :)

Mike M.

Yelp
We went for breakfast. It was our first time. My husband had the burrito. He said it was great. I had the child pancakes, eggs, sausage. The pancakes was shaped like mickey mouse. More enough food for a adult. The service was great. Always there if we needed something. The ambiance was the 50's which was cute
google avatar

Catherine N.

Yelp
Came here in a whim on a Sunday at noon. They were pretty busy and I think we waited about 30 minutes. They don't have a traditional hostess so you just write your name on a legal pad they have inside. The service here is fast fast fast! I love it!! The decor inside is super cute as well. Now on to the food, I got an eggs Benedict which was pretty good, not the best I've ever had but it was good! Hubby got the chicken fried steak that I tried and I really liked it! It had a really good crust on it. Now for the reason they got five stars.. the stuffed French toast!!!! It has cream cheese on it which makes me think of of toaster strudel icing, and the best part is the marionberry compote. That thang is bomb dot com. We could not stop talking about it after we left. We will definitely be coming back soon to try the lunch menu and to get more French toast!!
google avatar

Lynette M.

Yelp
Everything you want in a diner. I had the BLTA(hold the cheese) with tots. Perfect. Good amount of all ingredients, piping hot. Crunchy tots. Hubby had the Greek omelette and ate every bit. Said it was great. His hash browns were nice and crispy. The place was really busy (it was Father's Day) and there was a line the whole time we were there. Seems normal based on the locals reaction. But they moved people through nicely. Didn't feel rushed.
google avatar

Bill N.

Yelp
Stopped in to a throwback diner this morning. I tried yesterday but the line was out the door and today I know why. Its like walking back into the 50s with all the vintage signs, Elvis covers, vintage tables and golden oldies on the radio. The food was huge portions and biscuits the size of dessert plates. I had ham, mushroom and cheese omelette that was stuffed with ingredients. The team was very friendly and happy to help. The food came quickly and piping hot. Love traveling the country finding gens like this. Stop in if you get to Eugene, Oregon
google avatar

Nancy T.

Yelp
A solid 5 stars. The ambiance is 50's diner; kitschy and comfortable. The service so friendly and attentive, and the food is delicious and (too) plentiful. Husband had eggs, sausage, biscuits and gravy--eggs cooked to order and everything piping hot. The Lulu's vegetarian omelette with home fries was out of this world. Omelet bursting with vegetables and cheese. They serve excellent coffee and they serve it in large mugs, so you don't run too low. We were just passing through and read the Yelp reviews. Easy on and off from I-5. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Lea D.

Yelp
My favorite place when I come home to visit!! They have the BEST Chicken Fried Steak!! They the service is always pleasant.
google avatar

Olivia S.

Yelp
I love Buddy's! It has always been such a treat to go to since I was little! The milkshakes are amazing, the 1950s theme is so cute, and the wait staff is so nice!
google avatar

McKenna L.

Yelp
Came here for breakfast, had the best experience! Tried the breakfast burrito with the spinach wrap and the berry French toast and they were both amazing. Plus our server did an incredible job. I wish we would have caught her name because she was great. Definitely recommend this place
google avatar

Autumn D.

Yelp
The food was fresh and piping hot, the service was ok. Not too busy at 1 in the afternoon but good enough flow of people to keep them busy. Nothing remarkable or unremarkable about it all but good nonetheless.

Sharon J.

Yelp
Food was good! Service was great but place does get busy, overall looked amazing and felt welcomed
google avatar

J M.

Yelp
Best diner in Eugene. Family owned and operated and it shows in the quality and service. Food is always prepared well in an ambience of a 1950s diner. Eugene's best kept secret.

Carla Z.

Yelp
Love Diners and this is one of the better ones . Their Clam Chowder is better than any on the coast.
google avatar

Kait R.

Yelp
I've only ever come here for breakfast food but I love coming here for the retro atmosphere. It feels like you stepped back into time with the old timey look of this diner. They have plenty of options and everything comes out tasty. It can be pretty busy on weekends making service a tad bit slow but it's worth the wait, plus there's plenty to look at in the meantime
google avatar

Brock B.

Yelp
Breakfast was great. Service very timely and friendly. We'll be back soon. The big problem was way too much food. Neither of us could come close to finishing our breakfast.
google avatar

Maggie B.

Yelp
We were here a couple of times while near Eugene. Neither time disappointed! Given we have a dually truck & we're in downtown Eugene, we parked in a couple of places in their lot, which worked for disabled hubby. Took our seats upon arrival & familiarized ourselves with the menu. Typical small diner, but the tables were decorated with old Hollywood stars & the music was 50s-60s. One could tell the diner was popular as tables were nearly full & regular diners abounded. Our server was excellent & on top of everything. On our first visit, hubby had a BLT minus the L & the thickest strawberry shake he's ever had. I opted for the breakfast burrito with bacon. It arrived at the table still hot & was very satisfying. The salsa that came with it was mild & tasty. Our 2nd visit (next day, which was how good day it was) was just as good, though our server wasn't as personable. Hubby had the pastrami Reuben & I had the breakfast burrito again. Quality was still good. Definitely recommend eating here.
google avatar

Jim C.

Yelp
Great food, and a very good staff. We ate lunch there and went back for breakfast! Whenever we are in Oregon, we will be going back.
google avatar

Cynthia G.

Yelp
Prices here are sky high for frozen bought burger patties. Nothing special except the shake and malted. Eight dollars for a shake. Come on!!!!! It's 2 scoops of ice cream, milk and malted milk powder. As is all the rest of there prices so for the two of us to have burgers a malted and iced tea was $41.00 for food and $10 tip for waitress she was attentive but not to overly attentive she was fine so total for a regular lunch was 51.00. Place is usually crowded. I understand inflation but they are charging for food that isn't even made from scratch. They couldn't even form a meat patty. For real they need to lower their prices because they are fleecing their customers. We will not be back. So many better diners. That are open longer than Buddy's who closes at 2 pm. Boo Buddy's!!!!!!! Don't come here unless you like empty wallets when you leave.

Michele P.

Yelp
We went here for breakfast and the steak and eggs were so yummy. The biscuit was HUGE. The staff were polite. They were quite busy, but the wait wasn't that long.
google avatar

Marty M.

Yelp
Thought I had my mind made up for what I wanted for breakfast until I saw the waitress deliver in order of the Chantilly lace French toast, which is made from their cinnamon bread. Out to be an outstanding meal. Will definitely be coming back to this diner next time I'm in Eugene, Oregon. Can't say enough good things about the waitresses either. Very attentive very nice and very helpful. Worth a stop if you're ever in this town.

Elisha H.

Yelp
Best diner I've been to in awhile. Delicious food, genuinely friendly staff, and the environment is comfortable to be in. It feels like a cozy 90's diner with homemade tasting, quality food, from the one time I visited. The only downside is you have to sign in and wait for a table to open up, so seating is pretty limited. I think if they moved to a larger place it might lose its more personable appeal though. Love the Betty Boop theme they have going on. Prices are basic, not higher and not really lower than anywhere else.

Joe C.

Yelp
Food is a step above most others. Biscuits are huge but dry. Limited parking and seating. Always a wait line. If you ask for any type of discount up front, your order will be downsized.
google avatar

Chels B.

Yelp
The food was absolutely delicious. The service was impeccable and the ambiance was so cool. When we arrived there was a wait time but it was totally worth it.
google avatar

Sarah N.

Yelp
Went on a Sunday morning with some girlfriends and the wait was actually not too bad at all. Great service and best of all, the food comes out very quickly and is really tasty. I will definitely continue to come here. deducting a star because our table was a little dirty but understandable because of how busy they were.
google avatar

Faye D.

Yelp
We have been going to Buddies for over 30 years. It is constantly great food, served hot and quickly. The waitresses are friendly and give wonderful service. Decor is retro and fun. You won't be disappointed!
google avatar

Yelp
Leaving this review because of how great of an experience I had when visiting my Sister in Law in Eugene. My fiancée, MIL, and SIL all went to eat at this spot about 40 minutes prior to them closing. We felt hesitant to go, as we thought the kitchen would be closing down. But no, the waitresses sat us down, took our orders. And took care of us almost instantaneously. Once seated, we put in order brunch orders. And we even ordered an incredible cookies n cream shake. The food was definitely above average. For diner quality food, we definitely got our moneys worth. The eggs were not over cooked, the meats were perfectly seared, and the seasoning was on point for the burger we ordered. As a born and raised Jerseyean, Diners are in my blood from a young age. And this New Jersey native can confirm that this diner is valid, fairly priced, and has some of the best service in Eugene! Thank you! And keep it up
google avatar

Cathi S.

Yelp
We are back in town for a few days so a return visit to Buddy's was in order. The hard part is deciding on the entree that will accompany the star ** hand cut French fries ** Today I am going with the basic Buddy Burger. DH is having a club sandwich. I appreciate the extra effort to have hand made burger patties, but the result is so much better than the pressed/frozen patties used in some place. The meat on the club sandwich was fresh and tasty. The fries were unbeatable. Fresh brewed iced tea kept coming as I needed a top off. Service was friendly and attentive. The place was clean, the music was fun. They close at 2 so I got to watch while the outdoor seating was hosed off and closed down. Sanitation was evident with hand sanitizer at the entrance and at each table along with sanitary wipes.

Laura M.

Yelp
I was looking for breakfast this morning in Eugene and decided to try this local spot. The wait was brief and customers waiting for their tables said it was worth the time. Excellent friendly service, great food and fun atmosphere.

Philip S.

Yelp
The service, food and ambiance were perfect! Great local diner with delicious food! Thank you Buddy's!

Dean W.

Yelp
When Amber is cooking, this is the Special you get. Chicken Fried Steak Skillet with Country Gravy. Everything was cooked to perfection. Diced Potatoes with Onions and Peppers. The Peppers where perfectly done with a slight Crunch. Good Coffee. Great Service by people who take great care of you. Your coffee cup is never empty.
