My first dip into the world of Detroit Style pizza. My wife and I couldn't agree on toppings, so we each got our own four square pizza. The pizzas are rectangular with a crisp, oily pan-fried crust. The toppings and especially cheese are really packed in there. The sauce is more of an afterthought, with a few tablespoons plopped on top of the copious toppings.
I had the Henry Ford. As an aside, before moving to SE Michigan, I had no idea that this car guy would have his name on absolutely everything in a few hundred mile radius of Detroit: parks, streets, hospitals, hamburgers. If you can imagine it, they can name it after Ford. Back to my pizza, which was topped with bacon, ground beef, onions, and blue cheese. It was heart and savory, and they definitely did not skimp on the meat. It was a bit greasy, but even more so, it was very very salty. I think I would likely order something else next time just because of the sodium overload. My wife's pizza was a bit more balanced, with spinach, tomatoes, mushrooms, and three different kinds of cheese.
For a sense of scale, I ate three of my squares and my wife ate two of hers, and we were both full. We both enjoyed our pizzas overall, and was spent less than $30 after tax and tip with an extra meal left over between the two of us. Buddy's pizzas are substantial, fairly prices, and highly customizable. The fact that you can choose your pizza to be four or eight squares makes it a good option if everyone in your party wants to try something different, or if you are getting food just for yourself. If you want to dive into the world of Detroit-style pizza, this is a great place to start, and I'm sure we will be back.
