The 15 Best Restaurants in Santa Barbara, According to Eater Editors

"It might be tempting to take away Buena Onda’s freshly made Argentine empanadas to-go, but consider sitting in the charming outdoor dining area. A dozen empanadas can easily feed a group with compelling flavors like the Caprese empanada stuffed with tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil. The traditional version with Sunfed Ranch ground beef with onions, bell peppers, olive oil, and boiled egg is always a top choice. Check to see if live music is on the schedule, order some wine, and settle in." - Mona Holmes

The Best Road-Trip Worthy Restaurants Along California’s Central Coast

"It might be tempting to take away Buena Onda’s freshly made Argentine empanadas while on the go, but consider sitting in the outdoor dining area that may have live music in the later hours. A dozen empanadas can easily feed four people with compelling flavors like the Caprese empanada stuffed with tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil. The traditional version with Sunfed Ranch ground beef with onions, bell peppers, olive oil, and boiled egg is always a top choice." - Eater Staff, Mona Holmes

Google
Great little spot. Happy hour was good however if someone asks for a happy hour menu; I think the server should identify what isn’t part of it. There was a nice little surprise of an expensive drink on our bill. When asked we were told that wasn’t part of happy hour. 🤦🏽‍♀️ Either than that, the food was yummy! Can be a tad bit greasy, but was delicious and flavorful. We went on a Saturday evening and I think maybe 3 people were working. The service was very slow. Also kid friendly as many young families were there. I would go back

Google
A HIDDEN GEM. As a Hispanic on the upper east side, this place is legit. The carne is top tier. The Mexican rice is generously portioned. Limited but great outdoor dining—making a margarita even more enjoyable. Such a great experience with lovely service and people. Would recommend!!!

Google
Buena Onda serves the best Mexican food I’ve had in the city! Everything we ate here was high quality, fresh, and authentic. The service was friendly and quick and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. The guacamole was delicious — you can taste the freshness of the ingredients. Don’t skip on it! I loved my enchiladas verdes. The chicken was so tender and savory. Our favorite taco was the barbacoa but I’m definitely coming back to try the birria next time! Each taco was served with a unique specialty salsa that paired well. Beans and rice were a great side. And you can’t forget the churros! They were the perfect ending to a great meal — crunchy on the outside and soft in the middle, all served with ice cream and a yummy drizzle. They took churros to the next level. Cannot recommend this place enough!

Google
Legit best Mexican food I’ve had in the city. Birria taco was nails and excellently portioned. Elote was so incredibly tasty even with corn out of season. I can’t wait to come back in the fall! Nachos were unique and delightfully a touch charred with a lot of flavor going on topping-wise. Maria behind the bar is FANTASTIC. Sangria was on point too. I’d highly recommend coming in here for a light bite/drink.

Google
i used to live on 77th so i came uptown to check out some of the old haunts and stumbled upon buena onda, expecting to see mile 17. was pleasantly surprised to see a mezcaleria so i stopped in, expecting to have a drink and leave. two hours later i was buzzing off the delicious mezcal and mexican IPA they have on tap and my tastebuds were revelling in all the delicious flavors of the bites i had. the spicy guacamole and esquite were very fresh and VERY delicious! the enchiladas verdes were also excellent! service was friendly and knowledgeable, always nice to chat and learn more about agave spirits! the don amado was amazing! i will surely be back and i recommend anyone considering it to get there sooner than later because it is going to be a task once this place catches on…buena onda indeed!

Google
First time here and this place didn't disappoint. Great drinks, food and service. A++ I will definitely be back.

Google
Sometimes I'm struck my one aspect of a place and I mess with the algorithms by giving fives across the board. The food didn't change my life or make me question physics but it was solid, authentic food that brought me back to visiting Mexico. The environs was not notable besides being clean and cozy and welcoming. But the staff and service really made us feel at home and put the stars in our eyes and so what else could I do not put them in this review?

Google
Went on a rainy day for dinner and we were the only people there. Great service! Stay away from the ceviche…whole tiny shrimp probably frozen…essentially tasteless. However, the al pastor taco and barbacoa short rib quesadilla were good

Yelp
Food is so amazing! I need to come back to try more items on their menu. Came in on a quiet Sunday night and service was excellent. Love the decor on the culture. Their margaritas are also a must.

Yelp
Fantastic authentic Mexican food! Huge bar with many options for drinks. The margaritas were great and we were able to replace the tequila with mezcal. The enchiladas weren't traditionally vegetarian but they easily sub'd the chicken for zuchini, broccoli, and onions. I was kind of surprised they didn't include rice and beans with it since they traditionally come with enchiladas. The mushroom quesadilla came with sour cream, guac and pico. The elote was small and unfortunately was cold but tasted good! Service was friendly and quick, they refilled our salsa twice with the free chips and salsa they gave in the beginning. The ambiance was nice, but hectic because they had a huge event they were hosting and the group was occupying a large part of the restaurant. I'd definitely go back!

Yelp
Needed a place to camp after landing and this place did not disappoint. The vibe was very chill and they had plenty of screens to watch the NBA games on that night. I had the spicy guac and spicy margarita. They were delicious and definitely had my nose running a bit, lol. So respect. Great, chill service.

Bartender Rufio was the best. So attentive. The drinks were yummy. The food was delicious. This establishment is at 75th street first Avenue.

Yelp
Great spot in UES with reasonable prices, good food and good drinks - what else do you need? Came in with a sizable group of about 20-25 people on a mid-week evening after an event, and they had plenty of room for us. Their menu has plenty of drink and food options, all of which quite tasty - they specialize in Mezcal-based cocktails (or even flights) but they have lots of other cocktails to choose from. I tried one of their Enchiladas and was well pleased. They also put out chips and (pleasantly spicy) dipping sauce for patrons here and there. The staff were super friendly and accommodating as well - they let us put in last-minute orders to the kitchen even as they were closing down, and didn't rush us out of the place at closing time. I'm saving this spot for future reference, will come back for sure.

Yelp
Great addition to the neighborhood. Had the pleasure to visit here twice and both visit was a great experience. Place seemed very chill and spacious. Loved the long bar with tv all around the bar. Bartender and owner seems attentive and very friendly. Love the drink choice and food. On my two visits I had yummy chicken tacos, quesadillas, enchiladas, juicy skirt steak, gorditas, and sweet plantanes . Every thing was so good. I'll be returning to try other food and drink they have to offer.

Yelp
Dropped by for a quick drink and was immediately seated and served warm chips and salsa. The chips and salsa were great and paired super well with the drinks we ordered. Grabbed a pitcher of passionfruit margarita (on the rocks) and it was around 1.5 glasses for the four of us - definitely worth the $38.

Yelp
Love this place, I come here a lot, there are lots of regulars probably because they offer happy hour everyday from 4-7 and again from 10pm-2am. Service is great, margs great and food great.

Yelp
Great, fun atmosphere. Really good neighborhood spot with good food, plenty of TVs and plenty of room.

Yelp
Best margaritas in town!! We love coming here for drinks and a few tacos, are always greeted with a smile. Lots of room on the back, it's a bit of a hidden gem since it opened fairly recently.

Yelp
Great place for Mexican food and drinks. I like their enchiladas, guacamole and margaritas. They host trivia on Wed nites. Staff is very friendly-definitely recommend it!

Yelp
This place is amazing. Jack and Niko provides spectacular service. The ambiance is so zen. The drinks are perfect and the food is worth every bite. There is another staff Memphis name is Edmundo. he is an amazing cook! Very sweet and attentive. The food is definitely worth breaking your diet. Please do yourself a favor and come through for the happy hour. They truly deserve all of your money. I would rate this place 10 stars. A true GEM!

Yelp
Well, technically I did not eat at buena onda. The restaurant is disorganized - whether they are short staffed or something else but the right hand doesn't know what the left is doing--one person sat us down at a table and someone else came over and told us to get up because someone was ahead of us and had been waiting longer for the table. That was after we waited for about 15 minutes for a table. We were told to go to the bar and wait. We basically got up and left. We went to the second avenue deli, right across the street, where we were seated and served without complications. Buena Onda needs one person in charge of sitting customers. Probably not trying this new place again

Yelp
Great place, amazing ambience. Carne asada tacos are delicious. Tequila Paloma cocktail is also highly recommendable! Service is the best, people are kind and try hard to make you feel at home

Yelp
Service was spotty. I had a chicken taco and it wasn't very good. Margaritas was passable. Shot of tequila was $18. Not going back.

Yelp
I think they have a few kinks to work out (for example, the music is way too loud, it's hard to have a conversation while eating) but it's overall great food and friendly service. Good addition to the area!

Giovanni B.

Yelp
was in the at the bar well past closing time and a hungry couple walk in and ask for a table the owner was sitting next to me and ask what they wanted to eat and they said anything he allowed them to sit and eat and maybe made it himself, guys a real one for that. 5 stars

Stephen M.

Yelp
Highly recommend Buena Onda! Really excellent service and good, reasonably priced drinks!

Gerri B.

Yelp
This place is AMAZING. The drinks are perfect and the food even better. The bar is an awesome bar to sit at and get all their amazing drinks. My husband had the jalapeñ margarita and won't stop talking about, i can't handle the heat so i got the regular margarita and it was amazing. Their food is so good we honestly just can't wait to come back. It's a relaxed vibe and so east and the servers are great.

Yelp
Hands down amazing bar! Drinks I recommend the Passion Fruit Mezcal Mule or Burrito Habanero! The owner is super nice too and gave us shots! Great time with friends and family!
