The Essential Cheap Eats of Burlington, Vermont | Eater Montreal

"Burlington might seem like a town better known for hot chocolate and maple syrup than burritos. But this casual family-run Mexican chain (Burlington is one of seven New England locations) serves made-to-order meat, vegetarian and vegan quesadillas, soft tacos and burritos. And though specials like the Thai chicken burrito with basmati rice, red cabbage slaw and spicy Thai peanut sauce certainly isn’t authentic, it’s only $8.50 and worth every penny." - Heather Platt

Google
Great options for burritos, salads and quesadillas! Friendly staff and a charming little dine in area right across from university mall. Very cost-effective and you get a bang for your buck with some delicious food as well! Most items come with a small container of rice and beans with serve your own hot sauce, mild sauce, and Verde sauce on a middle island.

Google
Great place to stop for a quick bite before going to the Flynn for a show. Fresh ingredients, delicious food, great service! We had a chipotle chicken bowl, a Thai peanut burrito, & a pork burrito!

Peter H

Google
All the ingredients are fresh and you can see the staff making tortilla chips right behind the counter. Thai burritos is spicy but flavorful.

Google
Not sure why my steak taco looked like a dripping burrito. I decided for a local restaurant As far as atmosphere, it is non-existent, and the staff is not friendly, they simply seem like they don't want to see you.

Google
The spicy chipotle chicken burrito bowl was so good and flavourful. It is more authentic than fast food chains like Chipotle. The portion was HUGE. There’s a salsa bar as well.

No Bueno I’ve tried Bueno Y Sano three different times since they opened in the Blue Mall on Dorset Street all with the same disappointing results. Each time I ordered a chicken taco on corn tortilla and 2 beef tacos on flour tortilla. Both were to be dressed with their hot salsa and sour cream. They consistently left off the sour cream on all and only the chicken taco had the hot salsa on it. Also it took like 15-ish minutes to receive the order. Finally when the steak taco was made it was cut in half and called two separate tacos. At $15.00 it isn’t inexpensive to eat here. About the only saving grace was the corn salsa on the salsa bar. It was fiery spicy and delicious. I left here disappointed.

Google
Tasty burritos, bowls and tacos for those on the go! Bueno Y Sano has great options for carnivores and vegetarians with some very unique flavor combinations. Of course, traditional options are available too. Dining solo for this stop I chose the chipotle chicken burrito with medium heat sauce. I did stop by during the lunch rush so my order did take longer than usual to prepare. But, no worries! I enjoyed a Heady Topper beer while I waited. I also grabbed a bit of their hot sauce to try … nice and SPICY! A pleasant surprise. Burrito in hand, I first notice that the flour tortilla is quite nice. Definitely a better quality than the typical fast food restaurants, and I’m wondering if the tortillas are from the local All Souls Tortilleria in Burlington. The burrito was STUFFED! The chicken was tender, and nicely chipotle sauced. The medium hot sauce was very good, and the addition of the hot sauce gave the heat level a nice kick. The burrito also included black beans, lettuce, pico de gallo, rice, and sour cream. Overall, a very good burrito for a quick stop, and I appreciate that it is not a chain restaurant. Give Bueno Y Sano a try next time you’re craving Mexican flavors!

Google
I got the chicken bowl $9.25, not bad but could make the same thing myself at home. Typical tex/mex same as you would get from moes or chipolte. None of the workers seemed to be in a good mood and it wasn't even busy.
google avatar

Yelp
I would choose here over Chipotle -- Similar food & prices but better quality and taste. Waited a little for our food, but they hand chop everything and do not nickel & dime you for some common additions. 10/10 for flavor 8/10 for cleanliness 7/10 for waiting

Yelp
The food here is great, and the people behind the counter are invested in it. The Thai burrito is fantastic!

Yelp
First off, food is good! Fresh and delicious. We ordered the (Adobo) chicken bowl and the chicken burrito. The adobo chicken is so flavorful, and you choose what you would like inside your meal. The young lady putting our food together could use an itty, bitty, smile on her face to welcome the guest. It would make a difference in the service. She does work hard, but the environment feels a little tense, even though it was not busy. I thought overall, the restaurant cleanliness was good...customer service was okay...and the food does hit the spot. We inhaled the food, hence, no photos :)

Elisia L.

Yelp
Great food, fresh and amazing guacamole. The chicken quesadillas are so good and comes with rice and beans. Easily enough for 2 lunches. The salsa bar is added bonus.

Yelp
Really great spicy bbq pork bowls and pulled pork quesadilla. I've already been there twice since last week.
google avatar

Doc L.

Yelp
I really enjoyed my burrito here and they used all fresh ingredients!! I love coming here and always seem to get one of their pulled pork type meats.

David A.

Yelp
Interesting interpretation of I'm not entirely sure what cuisine. Register employee was short with me because I wasn't familiar with the menu and how to order instead of being helpful. Food was ok. But somewhat overpriced for what you receive
google avatar

Yelp
Best Burrito in the Burlington area by far. If you haven't been you shouid go. Great salsa. Great staff

Izzy L.

Yelp
I got a portobello mushroom bowl and added zucchini to it! It came on a plate which was hard to eat on considering it's not something that is wrapped, but it was good. The rice tasted like it was missing something, but there were many vegetarian options and, for once I felt like I was struggling to find something I could eat on a menu.
google avatar

Jacqui P.

Yelp
The very hot hot sauce is SO good. I can't remember the name, but def best hot sauce I've had in Vermont. I had a burrito: huge, fresh, flavorful. Will definitely be back.
google avatar

Heather L.

Yelp
Decent Mexican, but overpriced. Steak quesadilla is a winner with a giant tortilla and large amounts of cheese. It also comes with rice and beans. Burrito options seemed a bit strange - we got the bbq and regular. Size was large, but the flavors just didn't work together - no heat and just odd to have a sweet bbq with rice and beans. Stuffed jalepeno was interesting - large chunk of mushroom (???) and it had NO spice. Chips were good and standard , but they were served in a ziploc bag even though we were dining in.

Yelp
Decent Mexican food. Simple menu. Ample seating. Plenty of parking available. For my oil-free vegan ways, I opted for the fresh spinach burrito bowl. I got it without rice, cheese and lettuce (avoiding lettuce these days due to E. coli related recalls), and with extra beans, fajita vegetables (they weren't oil-free), pico de gallo, and mild hot sauce. Salsas are available at a self-serve station, so I added roasted corn and salsa verde. It tasted decent: nothing extra ordinary, but not disappointing either. The bowl was pretty small for me; maybe 6 inches across and 1.5 inches deep. Had I not already planned seconds from eco bean + greens next door, I would have had a second bowl. If I find myself in South Burlington again, I'd stop by again.

Yelp
I appreciated their attempt to offer a variety and some unique fusion type combinations. It's definitely better than Moe's but still falls behind Chipotle. I probably would've given them 4 stars had I not made the mistake of looking behind the counter. It was filthy.

Yelp
I really enjoyed Bueno Y Sano and look to check them out in our area when the opportunity presents itself. I just got one taco as a snack -- interesting that one taco was a burrito shell cut in half. Went with the chicken and the flavor was great. C had a burrito and also enjoyed it. A little different than the big chains in they have core ingredients (I'm sure you can change them up) and you don't select everything like at Qdoba or Chipotle but the flavors worked. You did get to choose your salsa and they had some more at a salsa bar nearby. Maybe not as fast as the big chains but still very good.

Yelp
I deliver with DoorDash and I've always been impressed with the staff and cleanliness of the restaurant. Today I took my mom there for a treat and it was great. Everything was fresh and so good! Can't wait to go again!
google avatar

Kim H.

Yelp
I can't review this place on their food bc unfortunately we never got our delivery. We just got into Burlington, VT and were ready to settle in and get some delivery after our long drive. We called the restaurant and they told us to order delivery from an app called Delivery.com. We placed the order and waited an hour. We then called the restaurant after tracking the delivery driver on the app. The guy who answered at the restaurant was very nice and told us the driver wouldn't wait two minutes for our order to finish and left. He said at this point our order had been sitting for 15 minutes. He said he hoped the guy (Tom Brown) came back bc they were already closed and waiting for our order to get picked up. He never did. We then had to call Delivery.com and had to call twice due to how long we were on hold after speaking to the first representative (they're definitely not based in the US). We finally got refunded and felt terrible that the restaurant made the food for nothing. Restaurant.com sent us an email blaming the restaurant and stated that the restaurant closed early so it was their fault (see attached photo). So now we're ordering from a different place through Door Dash. This restaurant should reconsider who they use for delivery.
google avatar

Tanner F.

Yelp
The food is overpriced. They don't have brown or white rice...just "Spanish rice" which is just some seasoned yellow rice. The portions are small and they didn't give us any utensils for our to-go order. Other than the rice, the taste of my burrito bowl was alright; skimpy on the chicken though. The pulled pork quesedilla tasted burnt and lacking flavor.
google avatar

Eeka C.

Yelp
I used to eat here all the time. The staff has completely changed and the customer service has gone down hill. I came in early to pick up my order realizing I forgot to mention I needed corn tortillas instead of flour due to an allergy and they made me feel incompetent and that it was impossible to change. I completely lost my appetite and will probably never come back.

Meg Q.

Yelp
Food is bland and overpriced. Over $10 for a quesadilla and then was told salsa to eat it with would cost extra. More concerning is that the restaurant is absolutely filthy. My shoes kept getting stuck to the floor, and there was food and what actually looked like a couple piles of dirt on the floor. Did not seem sanitary.
google avatar

Mike T.

Yelp
So, my wife has been eating at Bueno y Sano since the original location opened in 1995. I have been dining there for a few years and have visited almost every location. The restaurant in South Burlington is a disgrace to the name. The pulled pork is flavorless and dry. The chicken is also flavorless and I don't know what's going on with the green stuff they are referring to as guacamole but it was gross. The entire experience was so disappointing that if that were my first time eating there I would never go to another one ever again.

Lady F.

Yelp
This place is over-priced for what is offered. I am a fan of burrito bowls. Their burrito bowl is served on a plate and the amount of rice is so minimal that you're basically being served the stuffing of a burrito. It doesn't feel substantial for a "burrito bowl" at all. Also the heating in this establishment isn't good at all. The area where the lower tables are by the window, which are the tables that parents will use for their young children/infants is so cold that I always have to wear my coat. The metal chairs don't help either. I couldn't see bringing my 1 year old son here without having him sit with his coat on.

Chris L.

Yelp
Been here twice and tried several different items. So so so bland. Even their "spicy" stuff has very little flavor. Won't be back
google avatar

Anthony K.

Yelp
3 Star Burrito Place, not too much to be said here. The menu is pretty limited, but the food comes out quick and they have four dollar heady toppers. The group of guys in there seems like nice people but they really need something extra if I'm going to go here over chipotle or Moe's
google avatar

Scott N.

Yelp
decent food, but dining room was FILTHY DIRTY, DISGUSTING. I saw people trying in vain to clean their tables, becsuse EVERY ONE was dirty. Floors a mess too. 4 employees were COMPLETELY OBLIVIOUS. They made NO ATTEMPT to clean anything.
google avatar

Elizabeth R.

Yelp
I have been here a handful of times to dine in and take out. There are pros and cons, but I keep going back for the food, so that must mean I like it, right? PROS: Innovative menu for the area - things like a Thai Chicken Burrito and you can spice up a boring quesadilla with BBQ chicken. Fresh ingredients and made to order. Portions are satisfying. Easy parking and a nice clean restaurant. Family and locally owned!! CONS: The counter staff needs a little more hospitality training - they were all excited to see me until I handed them a coupon, after which the smile faded and I received short replies. It would be nice if they could explain the menu better when asked questions about it. It is more expensive than similar restaurants in the area, but not by much. I am glad Bueno Y Sano is in my neighborhood! It has been a nice addition.
google avatar

David S.

Yelp
I didn't like it the first time but both my wife and I liked it the second. I had a mushroom burrito and my wife had a chicken taco. Both were tasty!
google avatar

Brian M.

Yelp
Bueno y Sano is excellent. It's got very good food, good prices, and it's a perfect place to take kids. I usually get a burrito; good fillings include BBQ pork, buffalo chicken, and steak. They pack the burritos full of beans, cheese, and the other standard burrito fillings - it's like you're eating a little dense football. There are a number of choices for kids and my kids have enjoyed quesadillas and tacos, and they like coming back here. One weird thing: they have chips, but they serve them in a ziplock bag. Even Moe's flops them out on a tray, nice and hot. The interior is a bit spartan, and ....acoustically harsh? It's not terrible, but it's just got a bit of sharp-edged industrial feel. My biggest complaint is with the temperature. It feels like a meat locker. The test for whether the temperature is good is, "what are the customers wearing?" There were four or five tables occupied when we were there, on a cold winter night, and *everyone* was wearing a jacket. Usually people take their coats off, even when it's cold out - so long as the interior temp is right to do that. This could be improved, and pretty easily. Finally, I saw a commenter complaining about them serving the burrito with sour cream on the inside, as though that was a bad thing. I'm thinking the guy was a burrito rookie - is there any other way to have sour cream on a burrito? If you're someone who likes to dip your burrito in sour cream, you're probably a few tacos short of a fiesta.
google avatar

Kay S.

Yelp
Meh. The salad was fine. It was definitely overpriced. The service was nice and the time it took to get my salad was reasonable. The plastic fork available to eat my to-go salad with was pretty pathetic (barely did fork things). If I really needed a burrito, I'd maybe go back, but eh *shrug* And isn't there another tex-mex restaurant nearby? I'd probably go there instead.
google avatar

William F.

Yelp
Massive burritos at Chipotle adjacent prices and a larger variety of protein choices. You don't get as many options to customize the make-up of your burrito, but a good burrito doesn't really need that. I got a pork burrito with wicked hot sauce and chipotle sour cream and would happily get it again. They have a salsa bar and if you need more heat, the hot salsa here should do the trick.
google avatar

Emily D.

Yelp
I ordered a pork salad and added zucchini. Instead of dressing, I used the salsas from the bar. The mild was great, and the tomatillo was tasty; the hot was just searing vinegar. I was disappointed in the rice which had very little flavor. The pork, however, was phenomenal... very flavorful and crispy. The service was wonderful. They helped me navigate the menu and my food allergies. If you are gluten-free or have other allergies/sensitivities, I recommend this place! They were very knowledgeable and pulled out the recipe book when they weren't positive about ingredients.
google avatar

John O.

Yelp
I came here because it reminded me of a quaint little burrito place back home in Denver that doesn't serve your typical burritos, i.e. BBQ, fish and so on. However, I was immediately turned off by the lack of friendliness displayed when ordering. Maybe it's because I am accustomed to being asked how I am in response to the same question, and maybe I'm just sensitive to it because I am from one of the friendliest places on earth, but I expect it in return. It's called being cordial, having manners and winning a customers loyalty to not only return, but let others know how great your product and service is. Besides the rude counter service, the food is just ok. I got a burrito and a zip locked baggy half full of chips. The chips were way over salted and the salsas that are available were bland and lacked flavor. I almost feel bad leaving this review as this place is clearly new and still working things out but I can say without a doubt that I will not be coming back. Manners are a very important part of gaining loyal customers and the guys here just don't have it.

Yelp
After practice everyday my dad, best friend, and I would come here for dinner. We've got to be this restaurants biggest fans. I'll eat anything here happily. The food, vibe, and employees at this restaurant is amazing! It's my favorite place to eat at by far!!
google avatar

Nathan K.

Yelp
Just really poor quality. Couldn't even take more than two bites. Felt that it was over and under cooked and so in fresh.
google avatar

Steve A.

Yelp
We stopped in shortly after they opened this location. The restaurant was clean, spacious, and not too crowded. We ordered two bean and rice burritos and a cheese quesadilla to share. They were ready quickly. The quesadilla was nice and crispy on the outside. They include beans and rice and pico de gallo. We should have told them to hold the lettuce on the burritos -- our fault. There are fountain drinks as well as canned/bottled beverages. There is also a small salsa bar. All in all, a good meal. We're going back and trying the breakfast burritos -- available all the time, I believe. And another cheese quesadilla -- thinking about that is making me hungry again. One suggestion -- get some kind of curtains or blinds for Dorset Street. The late afternoon sun was uncomfortable.
google avatar

Brett G.

Yelp
Just ok, lots of fast mex places out there. This one doesn't do anything that sets it apart from the crowd. First off, not particularly fast from the time I ordered to getting my food was around 10 minutes and that was with no one in line in front or behind me. Everything you order comes with a cup of Mexican rice. You would think that something everyone gets would be more flavorful and exciting, but this cup was blah. Had two fish tacos, they weren't bad by any means just nothing special. Bueno Y Sano uses grilled fish not the fried fish depending on your fish Taco taste that is important note. One nice touch is they double wrap the fish tacos, nothing worse than a ripped tortilla.

Kathleen S.

Yelp
My niece asked me to take her to Bueno Y Sano's to order Mexican takeout this afternoon. I ordered 3 take outs quesadillas meals a steak & cheese, chicken with grilled onions & a pulled pork. I asked my sister & niece what score they gave their meals & I also graded the meal. We all gave you all a 95 for the meals. Thank-you. KS

Yelp
"Meh. I've experienced better." That about sums it up. At this price point: $9 for a burrito, I expect a fresh, flavorful, zingy, delicious lunch. This burrito was none of that. The best thing I can say is that the size was decent. Here's some unsolicited advice.... *If you're going for a tasty, commercial burrito, Chipotle is right around the corner. Take a page out of their book. One could do way worse than a Chipotle -clone. *If you're going for local, artisanal burrito, take a drive down to Montpelier and study up on what Mad Taco is doing. *If you want to stick with a flavorless burrito, drop your prices in half and maybe compete with Taco Bell across the street in the Umall. In closing, If you like Mexicali, you'll love Bueno Y Sano.... Dan out.

Jason M.

Yelp
Customer service, lacking in this department when a customer says " is there anything in your pico de gala(sp) that is spicy or hot" and you answer no I didn't find it hot. You are then asked again is there anything in it like chopped jalapeños or crushed red pepper? But you still say no ? Then to find it's hot as shizzzz for you mother whom has stomach issues the reason why you asked the first time. Piss pour customer service!
google avatar

Debbie C.

Yelp
Been here several times. Dirty silverware. Dirty tables. And no business! They don't recycle. Foods not half bad though. They won't be around long. Shame. Poor management.

Meredith G.

Yelp
Bland overpriced food and downright rude employees is what I remember from my visit to this place. Our meals had little to no seasoning or taste & were barely warm, the dining room was sparse and anything but welcoming and staff did not say a word to us or even look up upon entry and approaching the ordering counter. I won't be returning.

Brianne B.

Yelp
Food tasted amazing, and I love their options available on the menu. We ate in since we live an hour away and we were pretty happy with our meal. I was a little disappointed because I ordered a taco with a gluten free tortilla, and it came with a regular flour tortilla. I didn't complain at the time, just gave it to my husband, so to be fair I didn't give them a chance to fix it, but I also had other food that was great and met my dietary needs, and in quantities that I didn't need the taco after all!
google avatar

Tiffany D.

Yelp
I ordered the Thai Chicken and was disappointed because i am used to New World Tortilla version. I threw my burrito away. The chicken was not even tender. It was also too spicy. I think this is the 2nd time i have tried this place. Nothing special about it.
google avatar

Beth S.

Yelp
NOT Good....Fish taco was basically a slimey fish stick in a shell with some sort of spicy runny sauce on it.
google avatar

Steve W.

Yelp
Wow, so good. While visiting the area for a business conference, I stumbled on Bueno Y Sano as its very close to my hotel. They have tacos, burritos, salads and quesadillas. I've been twice in two days and I've had the Spicy BBQ pork burrito both times and it's awesome. It's a unique flavor of sweet and spicy. It's very clean in the dining room, and while the staff wasn't overly friendly, they were efficient and polite. I'd like tot ry another menu item before I head home, but I'm not sure I could not order the spicy bbq pork again being it's amazing flavor.
google avatar

Mark N.

Yelp
Restaurant was absolutely filthy! Trash on the floors and EVERY table was dirty. We had to wipe a table off to sit down. There were not very many people so I'm not sure what the problem was. My guess is the boss was off today! 2 stars because the burrito was decent although a bit too much rice and they put the sour cream INSIDE the burrito which makes half of it cold (!). We won't be back!
google avatar

Jason C.

Yelp
Great service from friendly locals. Quick food prep, nice portions and a fair price. Plus they were playing The Doors through the . We'll be back.
google avatar

Joe A.

Yelp
We really didn't know what we were in the mood for but said maybe here. Very good burritos we will be back!
google avatar

Brian S.

Yelp
The food is bland, and overpriced for what you get. Plus the service is slow. They give you free salsa but not free chips. Go figure.
