Tamale Guy Beer Gets Friday Release | Eater Chicago

"This Long Grove brewer released a seasonal Candy Corn Ale, a cream ale brewed with actual candy to evoke marshmallow, vanilla and butter-caramel–like flavors. Marketed as an autumnal novelty rather than a pumpkin beer, it’s available only on draft starting Friday, October 23, and is priced at $7 per pint." - Ashok Selvam

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Buffalo Creek Brewing is a great spot with a fantastic barn-style feel. The hardwood floors and big windows create a cozy, inviting atmosphere—perfect for a chilly afternoon. The Vienna Lager was solid, a bit heavier than I usually go for, but it definitely hit the spot. The standout for me was their super light beer at around 3.5%—smooth, easy-drinking, and perfect for those who prefer something more sessionable. Overall, a really enjoyable experience. Would definitely come back!

Google
Huge, family-friendly space. Easy beers - maybe nothing beer-snob approved, but nothing bad, either. Friendly staff. Local meat sticks (e.g., Slim Jims). 🦬

Great spot to have a picnic day. Bring your own snacks or grab something from the rotating food trucks. They have live music, games, and good vibes. Friendly staff.

We attended Oktoberfest at Buffalo Creek Brewing with friends and children, expecting a relaxed and family-friendly afternoon. Everything was fine until our kids stepped briefly onto the stage. Instead of someone politely asking them to step down, a man who said he was the owner came running and started yelling loudly, using profanity in front of everyone. The language was shocking, especially with so many families and little kids nearby. The entire atmosphere changed instantly — people around looked uncomfortable and the children were scared. We left feeling really disappointed and surprised that such behavior was tolerated from someone representing the business Stay away from this guy and his business!

Google
Outstanding German beer recipes. It’s bigger than it looks from the front. The Biergarten is impressive and makes me want to come back for Oktoberfest. Only thing I would change, add pinball

We went to Buffalo Creek this past weekend. I’ve never written an online review before but I felt like I had to based on this awesome night! Helene was our bartender and made the entire experience a blast! She was super witty and knowledgeable and took my girls night out to the next level. I haven’t laughed so hard in a long time! While I would prefer a place that had a cocktail menu, I will absolutely be back!!!!!! If they have an employee of the month Helene should absolutely be it!

Google
We came to the Oktoberfest event at Buffalo Creek Brewing as paying guests, expecting a fun and welcoming family atmosphere. Unfortunately, our experience was completely spoiled by a man who identified himself as the owner. Our kids were dancing near the stage, where there was only a tiny, hard-to-see sign saying “Keep out of stage” — something easy for children to miss. Instead of politely asking them to step down, the man suddenly came out shouting aggressively, using profanity like “get off here” in front of families and kids. He smelled strongly of alcohol and was acting erratically, in a way that felt impaired and very unprofessional for someone representing the venue. Everyone nearby was shocked and uncomfortable. After spending money on food, drinks, and tickets, we expected at least basic respect and courtesy. This kind of behavior is completely unacceptable and should be addressed by management to ensure no other families go through the same experience.

Google
Love this place and it's dog friendly❤️🐾 The outdoor space is so magical at night. Decent beers for the style. I also like that you can bring your own food in and order locally, but also the food trucks are an added bonus!

Yelp
Family friendly, pet friendly indoor and outdoor seating at Buffalo Creek. We loved hanging out here outside enjoying their light and bubbly ciders, seltzer and their brews. Every server we encountered was very friendly and checked in on us often to see if we needed anything -- and to warmly greet our pups. They don't sell food except for snacks, like popcorn and bison jerky, but there was a BBQ food truck while we were there, and nearby Kalayaan Festival happening at Brother's Field so we could grab some Filipino food. We cannot wait to return and try more of their beverages.

Yelp
The biggest pro of this palce is a wonderfully large outdoor patio area. There are lots of picnic tables around, and there was a barbecue food truck there when we were. They seem cool with bringing your own food too, in case the food truck isn't an option. It was nice to hang out with our group of families and just drink and catch up. Obviously some would be appalled at the idea of kids being around alcohol, but parents want to drink too. There's a large pavemented area nice for bouncing a ball around, but otherwise it's just a bunch of gravel on the ground. The beer was good, and I was excited to see they had flights as an option, which I will always choose if it's on the menu. They have big steins available too, but I had a far drive ahead of me. The Helles beer reminded me of our Germany trip, while the Red Headed Stepchild (Strawberry blonde) wasn't too sweet but nice on a summery day. What's with charging for water though? I asked for a cup since it was hot out and needed to drive home, but apparently it's bottled water only. You'd think with all the money they were saving using AI photos for their ads they could spare us some hydration. Definitely put a sour note on our visit. I could see us coming back, but definitely need to stow a few filled water bottles in our wagon next time.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, beer, and service. Buffalo Creek is the perfect destination to spend an afternoon at. Beer sampler was $15 and great value. All the beers were amazing and the sampler gives you a good taste of what this spot has to offer. Can't wait to go back.

Yelp
A nice location to enjoy some delicious beverages in Long Grove with plenty of parking and a spacious interior. The setup of this space is great for small groups and even when busy isn't extremely loud where you can't hear one another due to the layout that helps to spread out the sound a bit. One thing that's great about this spot is the nice selection of different craft sodas, including the Buffalo Creek selection of craft sodas which seem to be a bit less sweet than major brands with a bit more mild of a flavor. The service is fast and friendly here and the decor reminds me of some spots in milwaukee with a lot of wood accents and beer related decor. Overall, a solid choice for a casual spot to get a drink, and a great place to stop by if you are visiting nearby restaurants and shops in Long Grove.

Yelp
The patio was closed for a private party on Sunday but we grabbed a table inside. Decent offering of German beers. Only food available were bison sticks and a variety of flavored popcorns, which were quite good. Service was awkward and far from welcoming. There were clearly quite a few regulars there and everyone seemed to know each other. We quickly finished our drinks in search of a place with a friendlier vibe.

Yelp
Great outdoor eating area, great beer and food trucks. Service was also terrific. They should have more outside events with bands.

Yelp
What a wholesome and sweet spot. Interior is a woodsy campground with a bar, Bench seats, and high top tables. On the weekend, they offer beer yoga; drinks include the beermimosa which is only served on weekends. They have an outdoor playground outside as well; great for families. Staff is knowledgeable about all the beer and very friendly. Highly recommended

Yelp
Beer for brunch, I arrived just as they opened at noon and had a seat in the bar area. I was here because the parking lot has power outlets and I needed to charge up the house battery in the Sprinter van. A friendly conversation with the bartender who was not at all busy on this rainy Sunday morning. And then, some time with the wifi to write a review and plot out where I'm heading next. Beers were great. Delicious and cold. No need for a snack as I still had leftover breakfast to eat later. All great stuff. [Review 20638 overall - 185 in Illinois - 1619 of 2023.]

Yelp
Great facility, nice rustic vibe. Large selection of craft beer brewed on site. I attended their Wort Share fundraiser for the local food pantry. It was great seeing a local small business supporting the local community. Star was friendly and helpful. I gave 4 stars instead of 5 only because they do not have a kitchen on site.

Yelp
I came here with two friends and my toddler while we were checking out the town. We arrived around 4:30 on a Monday night, so it was pretty empty (better for me though so my daughter could run around more freely). They don't have food but they let you bring your own. As it started to fill up later people were bringing in their pizzas or other takeout. The interior is really nice and clean with lots of space and seating, along with an open area that looks like it's for live music. It was dark and cold but it looked like they also have a wide back patio area with more seats and some fire pits that could be fun to use. They definitely get into the holiday spirit with their decorations and music playlist (punk/rock Christmas songs and covers). There was only one bartender at the bar but he was really chill and friendly. I ordered a Cherry Rasp, which is their cherry raspberry amber ale, and I liked it! My friend got a flight; I don't remember what she got but she also liked them. I'll probably go with that next time! We ended up spending maybe 1.5 hours there and I also ordered a Beau Fleu (apparently pronounced "buff'lo"...I see what you did there) which is a double IPA and I enjoyed that one too. Overall a solid experience and I'm likely to come back again if I'm ever in the area, but I'll come on a weekend to see how it is when it's busier.

Yelp
My husband and I went to Buffalo Creek Brewing to play board games with some friends. The space is perfectly set up for this. The environment is relaxing and conducive to conversations with friends. We ordered the craft ginger beer and root beer that was offered. The bartender asked us why we weren't drinking when we had just ordered sodas. I did not like feeling pressured to order alcohol. The craft sodas were very enjoyable. I might or might not return, but I still recommend Buffalo Creek Brewing.

Yelp
First of all, this place is super cute. Too bad we visited on a gloomy day because the outdoor section was so nice! I was torn on my review as I didn't enjoy my beer that much. However, if you like lager style brews, this place would be your jam. Staff was friendly.

Yelp
First time at BCB, and I really liked it! You can bring your own food. A couple of buddies and I grabbed a pizza from Joanie's (I don't recommend it) and we had a few beers while we ate. Really cool vibe! There were 25ish people there on a Wednesday night. The couple next to us was playing Scrabble. Very casual, unhurried atmosphere. I got the Cherry Rasp, which was a very unique brew--a fruity amber ale. After dinner we went outside and sat under the gazebo (it was snowing) and smoked a few cigars.

Yelp
Love Buffalo Creek's outdoor and indoor areas. They have live music on Saturdays, which is always a plus. My favorite thing is being able to bring our own food. We've sat outside and ordered from local restaurants, brought our own, or they have food trucks on Fridays and Saturdays! I can't remember her name but we loved our server. She was accommodating, friendly, and personable!
google avatar

Kelsey A.

Yelp
Excellent spot! Big with ample seating and excellent beer. You can do a beer flight of any of their selections, which is a great way to try a bunch of things. I highly recommend the sours, especially the cherry sour.
google avatar

Erika C.

Yelp
Excellent beer selection in a nice, family friendly environment. We are looking forward to sitting outside in the summer.

Carson P.

Yelp
4.5 stars Pros: Great outdoor area, cozy indoor area, dog friends allowed outside AND in the taproom, live music, fire pits, food trucks, board games, friendly and fast service. Cons: German-style beer which isn't our favorite. No other cons for us!

Lukas L.

Yelp
This was a not a good experience, the service is very bad. Both women that helped us were extremely rude. The taller women with red hair made many rude comments and ruined are experience. Do not come here! There is no reason to be treated poorly at a mid place.

Yelp
My team traveled here for low-key afternoon meeting. We ordered drinks at the counter and carried them back to our tables, where we were left alone to hold our meeting and socialize for the next couple of hours. This is one of the perks of places like this -- a relaxed atmosphere and no sense of urgency, because there are no servers. And no food, for that matter. The beer menu lists nearby restaurants to visit, which is a nice show of support for the local business community. After asking an employee for suggestions, I ordered a flight of beer. His suggestions were spot-on -- I'm not ordinarily a beer drinker, but I enjoyed his recommendations of two lighter selections -- the Angellic Helles and Cherry Rasp. Ciders rounded out my flight, and they were super mild -- they seemed more like flavored water to me. The raspberry lime had more flavor than the habanero mango and was refreshing. The place was not busy, and we had a choice of tables. Another party there had dogs with them, and one calmly wandered over to greet us before returning to its owners. This place has a nice vibe, and its dog friendliness is a nice touch. One of my friends and I have been meaning to come here for awhile, and now I'm looking forward to it even more.

Yelp
Large outdoor space and two levels for this brewery. I like the fact you can bring your kids here and enjoy a beer. Bring your own food but get to enjoy a variety of the Buffalo Creeks beers. There's plenty of seating at the lower level but the top level seems a little bear with seating. You can only get beers at the counter. There's no servers going around to table to take orders.
google avatar

Kelsea F.

Yelp
Delicious beer and dog friendly inside and out so that's an automatic 5 stars from me!

Anthony L.

Yelp
Not Good. Ambiance is subpar along with the Neanderthal decoration motif. Basically, there is no theme here, no food;but you can bring your own? That is stupid. There beer doesnt taste any better than Miller Lite but it it brewed with magic hops from the beanstalk I guess and cost 2x as much. Folks nothin to see here. Keep it moving. As a rule, anyplace I have ever gone and they tell ya to bring your own whatever, almost always screams cheapie and that was not what I was expecting. If I am going to pay up for some beer that touts itself to be Luxury than I guess everything about the place should be luxury. Major disappointment here. It seems like a neighborhood bar you know where they have regulars and thats what they depend on. Not a lot of VC money went into the development of this place.

Yelp
I love this brewery. It's super close to my house but that's only a bonus. The owners are super nice and down to earth and great to hang out with. There is passion for making beer and some interesting small batches I love. Great quality beer. Free music most weekends and outdoor in the warmer months. They have a huge outdoor area with a large deck and a large grounds with tables and esoteric picnic tables. They even have some awesome refurbished furniture made from one of their employees. They have fire pits and growler torches. A great natural forest backyard. Just great everything. Great beer. Great atmosphere. Great people. Go here to this local brewery. Get some beer, listen to music, chill and take a growler fill home.

Yelp
I've been to Buffalo Creek shortly after it opened back in the day and did not review it. I came back today with my son and decided to share some of our opinions. Buffalo Creek does all their beer well. They have a great brewery and lots of open space to sit in a quieter area or be close to the action at the bar. They are not IPA-centric as so many local places seem to be - they have a great variety of lagers and ales and IPAs are available but do not dominate 70% of the menu as some places seem to do. They have lots of seating inside and outside. Our visit today made the inside the only option! (Rain and a high of 50...) Parking is easy as they are adjacent to a large free lot and there are plenty of street parking spaces nearby. Lots of great food places nearby that you can bring in or order from. Buffalo Creek is great! Come and visit soon!
google avatar

Yelp
Buffalo Creek offers a low-key, very chill setting with a good variety of beers (something for everyone) and reasonably priced flights. The decor is fun. They seem to offer more sours here than many of the other breweries in the area, so if you prefer sours, be sure to come here, Their Buffalo Kriek Cherry Sour was very popular among my friends. As a fan of darker beers, I was satisfied to find 3 here, which I had in a flight with a 4th that the bartender recommended. Seating is not necessarily comfortable here, but the beer certainly is.
google avatar

Scott O.

Yelp
Great beer, wide selection. Very nice setting. Slightly higher pint prices than similar places
google avatar

Maricela P.

Yelp
Wonderful staff! Great beers! Lovely patio! Oh and they are dog friendly so bring your fur baby! They don't serve food but there are great selections downtown for you to pick up!!
google avatar

Yelp
What a hidden gem! First time here and the bartenders gave us such a personalized experience. Not only we're we greeted with smiles and laughs, but we receive such a personalized and catered tasting experience from our amazing bartender. She was so attentive and made us feel like we were regulars. From the cutest dogs to pet to the amazing home-y atmosphere we can't wait to go back!
google avatar

Matt M.

Yelp
Their beer is average. But - I've never been to a brewery that won't give you a water; wouldn't even give a kid a water. (It should be noted they need a ton of water to brew with - so, this isn't exactly a scarce resource.) This is the Spirit airlines of breweries. I won't be going back.
google avatar

B C.

Yelp
After hearing about this location on a Saturday am news we decided to give this brewery a visit. Upon arrival definitely not enough seating offered for interior accommodations. Definitely not ready to accommodate quality customer control or quality. Beer options limited and 1 food truck that advertised food trucks! Ordered beers but had to reorder because original order never came out of computer system or someone else lucked out! Lol. Dog friendly considered, but heard a man behind the bar on the main level tell an older gentleman(asking for water for his dog) "I don't care abt water for a dog what else can I help you with ? Definitely plenty of other quality breweries I have spent my money and time with and will continue to do so. Not this one !!!
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
The beer here is really good, but the beef jerky? Not so much. Disgusting actually and I love beef jerky. The beef jerky was like 9 bucks and literally tasted and smelled like dog food. This place looks like a log cabin on the inside and all of the guys working here when I came are super friendly. Most importantly though, the beer is very good. I had a flight, and I looooooved Burning Red. Absolutely delicious! Muttersholtz is pretty good, as well.
google avatar

Kathy F.

Yelp
Location is perfect downtown Long Grove it's both family friendly and dog friendly with large outdoor seating

Yelp
We stopped in today for an afternoon beer. (This place used to be a high-end art gallery and Buffalo Creek Brewing improved it drastically.) I haven't been to this brewery before so I went with the flight. I enjoyed all 4 beers and got to sample another. I would order any one of them again in a pint. The beertender was friendly and the place was new and clean. Surprisingly it was quiet, even though it was around 30% full. If you want food they have an order-in menu (where you pick from local restaurant menus and those places will deliver to the brewery). The couple next to us ordered a pizza from one of the menus. If you want just a light snack, they do sell bags of popcorn. They also have acoustic guitar music on Saturday nights. From the looks of the groups, they are duets or trios. All-in-all it was a nice place with great beers and a comfortable atmosphere for hanging out with friends and playing some board games or jenga. I didn't notice any TVs playing sports. They had a TV above the bar, but it was alternating between showing their beer menu and ads for the music groups that play there.

Beth B.

Yelp
Great beers! Shared a flight with my friend. Friendly staff, cozy atmosphere. Looking forward to the beer garden being open soon!

Yelp
We love the Long Grove area. We ate Tacos at Chatter Box and came over for some flights. This place his pretty big. Many things to look at. Nice seating outside. Bar tender was really nice. Tried out some flights really enjoyed them. Loved the idea how to carry the flights back and forth were generous, never seen anything like that. My husband loved that you sell Bison sticks.

Yelp
Nice outdoor area to relax with friends during the warmer months. The South African food truck they had when I visited was great.

Len L.

Yelp
This has been here for a while but I just found it. Was coming home from Sierra Trading Post driving through Long Grove and saw a very small sign that said Brew on it. Really, here? I did a safe turn around in a parking lot (I am not one of those annoying Highland Park U-turners) and drove on back. What I found was a great brewery with a good variety of beers. The Stick Todd with its maple flavor comes to mind as one I recall was good. Bring your dogs, they are welcome. The tables have board games. No cooked food here but you can order from about ten restaurants nearby, and food trucks on some weekends. Inside is wood and copper, casual atmosphere, and good for meeting new friends. Enjoy!
google avatar

Martin S.

Yelp
What a unique outdoor space this place has! It's like camping with a brewery next door! Not sure if this place is new or just never stumbled in this corner of long grove....but it's pretty cool. Reminds me of Parsons in Logan Square but the space is 10 times as big and hipsters have been replaced by yuppies. Only had one beer (Quintins Milk Stout) and it was excellent. A few other bars and an ice cream shop nearby so def worth checking out if you're in the area.
google avatar

Hersh A.

Yelp
A cool place to hang out with friends, family or a date over brews, watch t.v. and or play board games and where you can bring your own food from elsewhere and have a good time. They have got a nice variety of beers and some ciders that they brew. The brewery restaurant is nice, cozy place with a modern rustic decor. This info is taken from their webpage - "Our beer styles and Long Grove's heritage are a perfect match. We have a Bavarian style taproom, event space and a one of kind Biergärten with beautiful views of the lawns and freshly trimmed pine trees. Mike Marr, owner and brewmeister was a home brewer for 15 years and yearned to turn his passion into an exciting business. In 2012, he submitted Marrvelous, his German Style Wheat Kölsch to the Great Lakes Beer Festival and had an amazing reception which prompted him to start thinking about opening a brewery. As part of his research, he visited more than 300 breweries, took notes of what makes drinking beer a fun and memorable experience. As he started to formulate his plan, it became clear that he wanted to create a destination brewery. A place where beer lovers and families could come, relax and have fun while enjoying well-crafted libations." They have weekly specials, tours and some occasional music events. Visit their website for more info. You have to check them out.

Yelp
We have been coming here for some time and we love the beers here. Nice environment and friendly staff.

Yelp
I always seem to end up in Long Grove when they are doing one of their many festivals and everywhere is a zoo, so you don't get the best of experiences because there are so many people around. So on a Sunday in February, I decided to check out some of what Long Grove had to offer with my significant other and one of our friends. We met up at Buffalo Creek Brewing and this place was really chill and the interior reminded me of a Bavarian Lodge as there was a lot of wood on the interior. There is also a huge Biergarten on the outside, so when it is Spring/Summer there will be plenty of space to hang out. Inside they offer plenty of games and you can order in from local restaurants as they do not serve food. They have a fairly extensive beer list of beers they make in house and usually have a guest draft or two on tap as well along with a "beer cocktail." The guest tap when we visited was 2 Fools Cider - Rose, which was appreciated as my significant other does not like beer. They also offer flights which is what I opted to get as there was too many to sample to just get a pint of one. You order at the bar regardless of where you are seated and service was prompt. We played some connect four while we sat at one of the tables and relaxed. Overall, I'll definitely be back in the future as the beer was good and there were plenty of games to keep you entertained.

Yelp
Super cute place. Wonderful outdoor area. Service was fantastic. No food, so don't come hungry.

Yelp
Worst customer service I have ever experienced in my life. The people waiting on the tables are doing there best with the staffing they have. It's the management that has no respect or care at all about customer service. The manager sat and drank beer and laughed at us when we addressed an issue we were having and had a complete whatever It's not my problem attitude. I was completely disappointed after waiting over a year to make it to this brewery and I will never return.

Joe S.

Yelp
Cheap ass brewery wouldn't serve my beer in a glass. When I asked, they said it's only for the party upstairs. Shittiest customer service we've ever had here... and we've been here a good bit. I even thought about buying a glass and having them pour it into that, but the guy behind the counter was a dick, with his long ass coke nail. Zero stars, and they have good beer here. Hopefully they pull their heads out of their asses... Doing lots of good things for the environment using these cheap plastic cups, Thanks!!

Yelp
If your looking for a cool place to hangout with friends and enjoy some good local beer this is the place to be. Located in the historical Downtown Long Grove this brewery is tucked in amongst some really hip cool businesses. ***They do not serve food here!! I came for a party and they allowed us to bring food with us! The place it's self looks like it was once an old barn on the outside. On the inside it has a very hip chill vibe lots of natural wood with low lighting which adds to the ambiance. There is tons of seating with low and high top tables. They have old school games on each table to play while you hangout which is cool. They have a great beer selection from IPA, Pilsner, Pale ale to Chocolate bacon Stout their is a beer for everyone's tastes buds. You can sample the beer to make sure your making the right choice. I had their Muttersholtz which is a Hefeweizen and it was spectacular. It had subtle notes of banana and clove Delicious!!! There is ample parking outside but it is shared with the other businesses in the area. The staff was awesome here they were friendly and helpful. I will definitely be back to enjoy this place again!
google avatar

Melissa K.

Yelp
I am so blown away by how nice this brewery is inside! I tried some of their beers are foBAB (Festival of Barrel aged Beers) and needed to come to the motherland. They have a really nice selection of different beers. Be sure to read the descriptions on the menu, because they're hilarious. The inside is so clean and nice (also a LOT bigger than I thought!). The tables are spacious and the seats are actually comfortable. I wish I had a fun event to plan, because this would be perfect for when we inevitably get snow. They don't serve food, but I'm sure you could find a place in the immediate area if you are hungry.

Yelp
Very clean and spacious space with a large outside Biergarten. Beer is good and staff are friendly.

Yelp
Definitely a fun spot with a great beer list with something for every taste. Taste with a flight or pick your favorite. 4 packs to go as well.

Yelp
Phenomenal service, amazing atmosphere, and topped off with live music and a tasty beer selection! We loved everything about this place! I can't say enough about the mellow and welcoming vibe. The outdoor space was spread out but cozy and our personal fire pit never lacked for fresh wood. What an awesome way to start the year! Cheers!
