The Best Chicken Wings in Portland and Beyond | Eater Portland

"This Macadam watering hole makes a very strong Buffalo wing: Large in size but still trimmed, these baked, deep-fried, and sauce-tossed wings are fall-apart tender. The GapDaddy Winger sauce, however, is really what makes them special, a Buffalo-esque base with a hint of barbecue smokiness. Other flavors include habanero plum, garlic Parmesan, and Thai peanut." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Where To Eat and Drink in South Waterfront | Eater Portland

"A riverfront location may not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of a saloon, but Buffalo Gap may be the exception. This classic restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner out of a wood-thatched building in John’s Landing. The menu leans all-American with biscuits and gravy, Buffalo wings, and a giant cinnamon roll available. From 11 p.m. to midnight on certain weekdays, a separate late-night menu is also available with corn dogs, chicken tenders, and pizza available by the slice." - Rebecca Roland

Google
Nice local pub feel with good food and cold drinks. They have a loft that can be rented out for private events. Staff was friendly and was able to accommodate our large group on a late Sunday afternoon. The gyro with sweet potato fries was my favorite. We’ll be back.

Google
Nice space and plentiful seating with a lot of tv’s to watch sports. Food was solid with no complaints as far as taste goes. HUGE menu with tons of variety and options, but pricey. Do wish they had more beer options on tap. Service was very* unfriendly and standoffish (until it came time to pay the bill).

Google
The food was really good I enjoyed it a lot. Our server was nice also and place was pretty cool had a lot of pretty things and it had 3 pool tables. I think it was $1 to play on it

Google
This place came highly recommended by the lobby staff at the hotel we were staying, but due to inclement weather and snow, they closed early. We wanted to get a pizza as well as clam chowder and fish and chips. The web for of us. We will visit again. We had so many good things about this food that we wanted to enjoy it.

Google
Stopped in for dinner and drinks with friends and had a great time. The wings were delicious, but the jalapeño poppers were the standout!

Google
Chill place with great food and drinks! We loved that there was a parking lot in the back which feels like a rare find at times. Service was fabulous and even though we had a party of 5 we still got sat immediately. (It was about noon on a weekday for time reference, I bet they do get busier in the evenings)

Google
We enjoyed breakfast so much the first time we went on Saturday that we went back on Sunday for breakfast again. The bloody Mary mix is a in house mix and so good! The homefrie potatoes are so amazing and full of flavor. Sunday I got an omelet and it was just as good as the over medium eggs I had the day before. The biscuits are made in house and a little too savory for my liking but the texture was great.

Google
Was in town for business and found this great little bar/restaurant. Cozy and warm. What a great experience we had. Food was great and our service was excellent. The humus platter was fantastic. I did not like the soup but everything else was yummy. Highly recommend.

Yelp
First of all- thank you Jolly Roger at John's Landing for recommending this place. Absolutely amazing! My kids loved their food as did I!! The food was fresh. The tots were crispy. And service was fantastic. Not sure when we will be back but we can't wait to experience some more delicious food!

Yelp
Great neighborhood restaurant. So warm and welcoming. Gives of a Cheers vibe and I'm here for it. You can play pool, play card/board games or watch the games. The drinks were on point and our server made sure she kept them coming. The food serving size is enough to share. If you just want a heavy, cozy meal or feeling greedy, this is your spot.

Yelp
I had high hopes for this spot and both my friend and I were unimpressed. Three stars strictly because the waitress was wonderful. She was attentive and quick to come over and check in. She was very helpful and friendly. They definitely hire the right kind of people! The drinks were okay, either watered down or just nothing special. The loaded skins were bland and mushy. The salad was delicious and the rosemary bread was wonderful but the chicken was very dry. And my friend said her burger was flavorless and her bun was soggy and falling apart. The cinnamon roll was soft and tasted very buttery and sweet. Something I found to be odd is how close the table is to the bathroom... and the bathroom door doesn't close all the way so you can hear everything when seated nearby. Also, the biggest issue we had were bugs. There were a few flies and some smaller gnat like things flying around us the whole time. We kept swatting them away or clapping them dead and more kept showing up. It was super weird considering the door isn't left open and no windows were open. Definitely not an experience I'd like to have again.

Yelp
I was skeptical the first few times we drove by. It didn't seem like the food would be good. I was very wrong and I'm glad I was wrong on this. We ordered to go from here over a dozen times but finally went in a few weeks ago. The place is huge and they have pool tables!!! Their menu is huge and we are coming back to try more. Several food items are our go to: Fish n chips - my partner is British and this is the only place for fish n chips for now Salmon Caesar - salmon was done nicely and Caesar was above average Country fried steak - seriously their gravy is the best. I've had country fried steaks from many places. This is by far the best. I'm talking about places from Bay Area, NYC, Seattle, LA (usual suspects). I won't claim I know the origins of country fried steak. let's just say the way they make it here is good. Maybe I didn't find the right places for country fried steak in other locations but this one feels like home.

Yelp
Love their taco salad. Hamburgers and fish and chips are great too. Try their breakfast, seems to be a popular spot for that. Space for larger group dining. Been visiting this place for many many years, super consistent. Staff and service is a pleasure. Parking is a bit of a pain though. They have a small lot. Residential street parking in my experience hasn't been available and/or nothing close to the restaurant. If you can, carpool or Uber.

Yelp
Best Halibut Fish & Chips in town is you ask me. Dive bar feel with great food choices and quality. Lottery on site, and just a great rustic feel. Reminded me of being at he ski lodge. One of my favorite spots in the city.

Yelp
Chicken wings and nachos for all you fat-kids that are looking to soak up all that beer.

Yelp
A great spot for a casual dinner with delicious bar food! My husband and I stopped by at around 7pm on a Saturday. The establishment is very large with lots of seating so there was absolutely no wait. The vibe is super casual, dim lighting, and lots of TVs playing a variety of different sports. They also have a nice patio area as well. We were immediately greeted by our server who was very friendly! We ordered: 1) Gapdaddy buffalo wings: So these are priced per pound ($15 per lb or $25 for 2 lbs). Each pound comes with about 7-8 wings, which are definitely on the large side. The wings are lightly breaded and smothered with the sauce of your choice. We elected for the traditional buffalo sauce which was flavorful, well-seasoned, and had a hint of vinegar. I was super impressed! The sauce is definitely in the top 3 in PDX that I've had! 2) Fish and chips: So perfectly fried and crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. This comes with coleslaw which I'm usually very indifferent about but theirs tasted so fresh and delicious. And of course this comes with a bed of fries, yum! Oh, noteworthy to mention that service is very FAST! I think we got our order within 10-15 minutes of ordering. Overall, if you are looking for a casual, saloon-type/sports bar/dive bar place with excellent food and LARGE portions, this is the place for you!

Yelp
My husband and I live in Johns Landing and buffalo Gap is our favorite neighborhood bar. Whether you want a quick drink or a good Saturday night. Great drinks and good food. Service is usually good but Laura is by far the best server. She is always on it, so attentive, knowledgeable, so sweet and always greets us with a smile when we walk in. Buffalo gap is great, wish they were open on Mondays. But always happy when we get Laura as a server.

Yelp
Pretty average pub grub, perfect for a weary traveler after a longish flight. Pretty big portions, IPAs a fairly floral with a fruity touch, can get pretty loud, restrooms are a little funky in terms of trying to find em

Hank S.

Yelp
Terrible dry hamburger. Worst I have ever had. Service not friendly. Had to ask for water too.

Yelp
I hosted my husband's milestone birthday party in the attic space- sight unseen (I know, risky). I am soooooo happy that I did!! From the initial email inquiry, to the planning exchanges, to the actual day of- every single thing went perfectly!!! Troy was amazing with answering questions, etc. The service staff on the day of were on top of their game (shout out to Kirsten and Sunny)!!! Thanks, BGS for being so accommodating and making this special day so fun for my family and friends!!! PS The food was also AMAZING. If you're planning to feed a large group, the Kobe beef sliders and pulled pork sandwich bar are an absolute must!!!!

Yelp
This place is historical and from what I read part of the building goes back to the 1800's and it is log cabin style. It has been added on to. So this is a sports bar/casual get what you pay for kind of restaurant. :) They stay busy! The wait staff has always been nice and have provided good service. We were a table of 6 for Brunch on a Sunday and the waitress served drinks and menus immediately and served the drinks promptly. I have never had anything bad off the menu and everything has been good and a substantial portion. Today I had the "Bacon Bleu Omelet" which is a three egg omelet filled with avocado, pepper bacon, and three cheese blend, topped with creamy bleu cheese sauce. YUM! It seriously only took about 15 minutes for the food to arrive and topped off drinks. My omelet was so good! It was served piping hot with hash browns and an english muffin/jam. The coffee was even good! :) I have also had delivery from here and the food was the same as when eating at the restaurant and packaged well. So if you are looking for a place that is solid with a menu that covers breakfast, lunch or dinner check this place out. :) I will be back!

Yelp
So, I took a photo of the receipt, not for the price (which was astronomical for the terrible food we got) but rather, I wanted the waitress' name from "Barf-alo Crap" -- oh, I mean Buffalo Gap. Many who have given low ratings here have comment on bad service and things like the "rude ass server." None of the 4 servers looked happy but ours, "Server 259"/"Sunny" was particularly rude. My friend did not have his reading glasses and was squinting a bit. I helped him with ordering the main dish but understandably, he thought it would be quicker to just ask "Sunny" if they had Brussel sprouts. She barked, "If it's not on the menu we don't have it!" She then sensed how rude she sounded and said, "I don't mean to be sarcastic." This is after she was already rude to me when I asked about a beer. "Sunny" is not. Major dark clouds with a strong chance of bitchiness. I am calling the manager after leaving this review to share our thoughts. The food was sub-par. No, it sucked, actually. There was so little food in my Hula Salmon Bowl. $15 for a small piece of thawed, previously frozen, dry and rubbery salmon that was totally bland. They drowned the grains and the whole plate in teriyaki sauce, making it overly sweet and sloppy. My friend got the Thai Chix Ancient Grain Bowl with very little chicken and a WHOLE lot of broccoli. $15 worth. Both plates were large with a shallow bowl center that held the food. One slight brush of the fork revealed the bottom of the plate with either dish. We also had a side of sweet potato fries. DRY and bland. Do not eat here. Make better use of your money and find joy just a skip away -- at McMenamins Fulton Pub & Brewery.

Yelp
We have been to Buffalo Gap several times to meet up with old co workers. We usually have group of 6-8 people. Buffalo Gap has plenty of space plus a menu with good variety. The food in my opinion is very good. I usually get their French dip (they have a different name on the menu). The French dip is very good and with the tots, you have a generous meal. Their Rueben sandwich is excellent. Salads look great. The wait staff is always been very nice and attentive. They keep refreshing your water or sodas without being asked. Ambiance is good. Remember this is a bar. We will definitely go back.
google avatar

Selena N.

Yelp
This place to me was nothing to write home about. Average American fare. The wine was average too. I did enjoy the hummus plate, and the garlic cloves were a nice change. I could see going there for a game of pool or to watch a game but I wouldn't probably have gone here. It was a work happy hour, and we did have fun! The server was attentive and kind. No problem there. I just think that with all the food places out there, with better food and drinks, why settle for a place like this?! It just always surprises me. I don't eat wings or anything fried, and so like I said... this place wouldn't normally appeal to me.

Yelp
Been here a handful of times and never a bad time. We've had carol serve us most of our visits and truly adore her. She goes out of her way to make our experience wonderful and memorable. We were celebrating my daughter's 21st birthday and she made her a special shot with candle. Food was amazing. Love Carol!! If she's ever had a bad day you would never know it.
google avatar

Eliza M.

Yelp
Y'all- they realized that they made a small error in my allergen meal and came out immediately to let me know as soon as they realized it. They've earned my loyalty
google avatar

Blake S.

Yelp
Wings were okay. No lights or paper towels in bathroom. Service not great. 3 1/2 stars
google avatar

Will S.

Yelp
Buffalo wings 5/5 size and sauce on point and the ranch and blue are both delicious. Crispy skin and perfectly cooked wings, some of the best in the Portland area.
google avatar

Mike G.

Yelp
We forgot how good their food is here! After not dining here for years, we stopped in and found it to still be very good! Portions are good and the prices are even better! Wings are fantastic too! Beer selection is a bit questionable but thats it! Stop in for some good food and service!

Amber B.

Yelp
Food quality has gone way downhill. They used to have great wings. What they are serving now is more like a wing soup. I've never had wings that were swimming in that much sauce. They're using a new "buffalo" sauce that tastes more like bbq....so that too is disappointing. $18.75 for 6 wings and four tiny pieces of celery. Charged an extra $1.50 for 4oz of bland ranch. The only thing that rang true to the description is that were in fact jumbo wings...could have been cooked a little longer.
google avatar

Mary R.

Yelp
We loved it and returned two days later! Great menu choices and fun western environment. Great location and friendly staff.
google avatar

Dan S.

Yelp
After driving by this establishment thousands of times I finally decided to go for dinner last night. I'm sorry I waited so long. The food was fantastic. One of the biggest challenges was deciding what to order, the menu is huge. I was torn between the burger and the Reuben. I had the Reuben and the wedge salad and it was amazing with the hazy IPA. My wife and I stuck around and ordered more drinks and played pool. This place is great and the service was fantastic. I'm excited to go back and try more items on the menu. I'm so glad this is in my neighborhood!
google avatar

Jeannie O.

Yelp
Great service. Great pub food. Such a wonderfully charming interior on a cold winter. Food was great had fish and chips and salmon dinner. Cod was superb. Our waiter rocked. Coming back soon!

Alexis A.

Yelp
We celebrated my sons birthday tonight at Buffalo Gap and the food and drinks were wonderful. I had the Iced Spanish Coffee and it was delicious. My son had the giant carrot cake and it was amazing. Our server was Madison and she was so friendly and went above and beyond. Because of her service we will be back.

Colleen W.

Yelp
We were here for our son's youth event and enjoyed the food and atmosphere. The service was a bit slow, but overall this was a good experience and we will be back! :)

Stephanie K.

Yelp
Normally the dining experience here is super pleasant but whoever is on dinner service Saturday night should probably never be scheduled for a Saturday summer dinner service ever again. They can't handle the volume and instead of taking care of customers the servers are cussing each other out in front of customers and acting like children "tell her not to talk to me anymore". Are you for fuckin real? LMAO. Carol (who was being singled out by our bitchy ass server) and whoever else is scheduled today needs a talking to from the behavior that was witnessed. Their attitude sucks and it's palpable through the entire section that was being ignored. Not a manager to be seen to tell them all to shut up and do their jobs or leave. Just embarrassing. You're allowed to be busy- but there isn't a single circumstance in which the poor behavior we witnessed today is a justification.
google avatar

Sally K.

Yelp
Visited for our 30th wedding anniversary! Drinks were delicious and strong. The Cobb salad was very good and large. My husband had the Kobe beef sliders and said they were great. Of course we had to celebrate with after dinner drinks ( Spanish coffee) and dessert ( bourbon bread pudding and a chocolate brownie) so yummy! Joel was our awesome server and kudos to the bartender too
google avatar

Samantha B.

Yelp
Meh not impressed by there beer selection. The basic cocktail I had was refreshing and was a good ratio of spirits and filler. Didn't try anything but a near buy patron said the mozzarella sticks were good. My absolute least favorite place to try and play pool. Not enough room and tables weren't cleaned in that area.
google avatar

Bubba Y.

Yelp
Lunch with the geezers yesterday. Came in at 11:30, restaurant was still pretty empty. Service was quick and pleasant. Drinks came quickly. Menu was good but a bit light on lighter options. I ended up with an Edggie Veggie Hummwich and a glass of soda water with a slice of lime. The sandwich was tasty for a veggie option. I used a bit of salt to enhance the flavor but the combination of veggies and cheese pretty much held it's own. My one beef - as it often is with many places - is that I was charged $3.50 for my soda water and lime. Yes, it can loosely be classified as "soda" but honestly - this is about $.05 worth of product. Seriously? Regardless, I'll be back Buffalo Gap is an institution. How can I not come back? $15.25 for the meal and drink.
google avatar

Chris M.

Yelp
Having been here numerous times my experiences has been good and bad. The regulars and neighborhood are the culture, and definitely have a solid showing. I am a huge fan of the cinnamon roles. Other food items have been at times great and others just average. Probably the worst was when I ordered the prawn Caesar salad. The dressing and size of the salad were good but cocktail shrimp on a skewer is not prawns. When their is a game on I want to watch, I can count on it playing here.
google avatar

Chris E.

Yelp
Enjoyed a fabulous breakfast on their lovely patio. Quick and very friendly service. Excellent menu with great variety. The food was very good. Well made cocktails. Great atmosphere. Small parking lot and street parking. Great that they open at 9 a.m. on the weekends, as so many places don't open early enough for breakfast. We will absolutely eat there again.
google avatar

Janelle M.

Yelp
All the food I tried was fantastic! Sweet potato fries were out of control though; They were the best I've ever had! I will definitely be back!
google avatar

Megan H.

Yelp
We ended up having a birthday party there. The staff, drinks, and food were fantastic. We had an amazing waitress - I believe her name was jacklyn. She was always there to refill our drinks and help with any questions that we had. We had the chicken skewers - flavor was good but they were quite dry. 6/10 Caprese skewers - classic and tasty. Only thing would be wanting a bit more balsamic sauce. 9/10 Artichoke dip - it was a bit too salty for me but overall the flavor was really good. - 8/10 Blueberry kamikaze - recommended by the waitress. It was in a chilled shot. It was delicious and dangerous! They have been around a long time and are great people.

Yelp
My fiancé didn't have his ID and he was weirdly patronized by our waitress the entire meal. It made us all uncomfortable. Won't go back.

John M.

Yelp
Patio dining, casual atmosphere, local crowd, friendly service. Simple food prepared well.
google avatar

Jeff K.

Yelp
Agree with C C., This place blows and sucks total ass! Stay away and don't waste your hard earned money on this establishment; terrible food and service. There are way better micro brews and eateries in Portland with great food to explore.

L T.

Yelp
Great tasting food and a great variety of menu items and beer choices. 4 of us had a late night dinner, we ate fish, a steak sandwich, bbq chicken a burger, and we all had different types of cocktails and beer choices, and everything was great! Our server was fun attentive and super knowledgeable. A hidden gem for sure.
google avatar

J Y.

Yelp
The staff are attentive and the food are very healthy portions. Exactly what you need for watching a game. The half portion nachos is like a full portion at most places. We meet here for our Alabama game watch. They are able to efficiently service 50-60 of us at the same time. Management does a great job in making sure they properly staff as needed. I know this seems like an easy concept but we have been to many bars where they give us one waitress for 50 guests. This is a great local bar rooted in tradition, good food, drinks and customer service.
google avatar

Nina N.

Yelp
Terrible service. Sat for 10 minutes without being able to order anything. Been there once before but apparently sitting at the bar doesn't do starting for you.
google avatar

Abdullah A.

Yelp
I was really excited to try the wild salmon hash, but I wasn't impressed with what I got. Run of the mill hash browns with scant, dry smoked salmon lacking in the flavor department. Served with toast and eggs, it was definitely substantial, but I wouldn't order it again. My friend got the chicken fried steak; I liked his meal a lot more, especially the gravy. The space is large, they have TVs, and the service was good. I'd eat brunch here again, but I'd pick something else off the menu.
google avatar

Suzanne P.

Yelp
Unexpected good food & drinks. A bit darker atmosphere than I normally frequent but this has a neighborhood feel that was fun. Biscuits & Gravy perfectly done for breakfast and Hummus plate for lunch.
google avatar

Jason C.

Yelp
Came with some friends and had a great time. They have good service, tasty snacks, and great music. The Radiohead cover guy whose name I missed, and No Damsel were awesome. Everything was super well-priced as well. I look forward to coming back to hang out in the future!
google avatar

Ron G.

Yelp
How people give this place anything less than 4 stars confuses me. This place is awesome and has everything you want in a place to eat, drink, relax, or just hide from society. Corn beef hash no joke the best I have ever tried. The staff was awesome and down to earth. I'm just pissed it took me two days to find this place. No joke this will be my Portland go to spot every time I'm in town.
google avatar

Bridget C.

Yelp
Still love the place but really gotta make it 3-stars. After being blinded by the beauty of this dive bar, the glow has worn off and it just seems pretty damn dirty now and service is hit or miss. Also could have a way bigger tap list. Free live music Friday/Saturday nights though!
google avatar

Nicki H.

Yelp
Visiting, we came here for breakfast and were soooo happy with our 1st experience! Service, food and drinks were all fantastic! Can not wait to come back! Thank you :)
google avatar

Tiffiny G.

Yelp
This was sooooo delicious! I ordered delivery and chose chicken Cesar salad came with warm yummy bread. I probably said outloud," oh man, this is so good!" Like 4 times. My daughter had the cowboy burger, she couldn't stop talking about the sauce! Thank you, this was so needed.

Yelp
Versatile bar and grill in SW Portland. Sometimes I do forget about this place, but then I have ideas to meet here - it's on the Macadam stretch between Downtown Portland and Sellwood/or Lake Oswego. They have it all: Breakfast-Open at 8am if you're an early riser. Live Music- Special Event or Meeting space upstairs and Down. Lottery, Full Bar, Huge Menu. Last visit was Valentine's Day for breakfast. Was busy with a lot of Retirees. The woman who waited on us was quick and good natured. I had Sioux Son omelet with a MANMOSA. The omelet was great, well made, generous hashbrowns and couple pieces of toast. I like all the fun photos and rustic touches in this pub. It's definitely got character. Lots of nooks and crannies to find seating. Parking lot is generous, but it's a bit tight. Prices are a little high. $12 or so for breakfast entree, etc. 6 taps of averagely popular beer. Full bar.
google avatar

Rachel R.

Yelp
This is our go to brunch spot. The service is always great. Food is made from scratch and delivered fast. There have been times where I ordered and got my food back with what felt like five minutes. Bloodys are the best. Especially their Hail Mary with the Miller pony. Also great for Sunday football. Highly, hiiiighly recommend.
