A Pupusa Food Crawl Through Houston’s Hillcroft Avenue - Eater Houston

"A restaurant and market in one, Buffet de Pupusas is a great introduction to El Salvadoran cuisine and pupusas if you’ve never had one. The $14 all-you-can-eat option offers unlimited bowls of flavorful chicken soup with meat that falls off the bone and a wide selection of agua frescas, including horchata, watermelon, and passion fruit — a perfect place to start while you wait for your pupusas. Take advantage of the buffet-style situation, and order one of each pupusa, which is made-to-order with your choice of cheese and chicken, squash, pork, beans, or loroco — an edible, fragrant flower popularly used in pupusas and other foods in El Salvador. If you’re interested in branching out beyond those cheesy discs of goodness, check out the restaurant’s full menu that offers a host of Central American flavors in dishes like tamales, carne asada, and caldo de pata or cow feet soup, an especially popular order on weekends, or browse the Buffet de Pupusa’s stocked shelves for snacks and various food items from Central America to take home." - Brittany Britto Garley

I had a great experience at Buffet de Pupusas! The place was clean and had a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. The food was surprisingly good—fresh, flavorful, and well-prepared. A real standout was the service: our server, Alexia, was incredibly attentive and made sure we had everything we needed throughout our visit. Definitely worth a stop if you’re in the area and craving pupusas, tamales, or soups!

Google
The food was great, really authentic Salvadoran cuisine, we tried about 5 dishes all of them have good flavor, and were on point, except for some dessert and food will try to prepare them less greasy! I’ll suggest more communication regarding the menu availability since there was confusion on few of them that we wanted to try out Yorleni, our waitress was very friendly and helpful, when that came to order our food she explained us and suggested us some dishes, we’ll come back again!

Amazing fresh pupusas. I like the loroco. Also try the caldo, which is a chicken soup. The staff are so friendly! Great food and service! Update: this place is still amazing and the whole staff is wonderful. Angie was my server today and she is so friendly and welcoming!

Great food at a great price! Pupusas were very good, chicken soup is also included in the buffet. Jason our server was great, he answered all of our questions, and made suggestions. He’s bilingual so he made my kids feel welcomed answering their questions in English. All around we had a great experience, love to support our local businesses and local economy.

Google
This “Buffet” should be honest, because i thought it was a buffet of everything like the videos i saw, but it was just the pupusas. Everything is supper expensive and the worst part of this is that i got a quesadilla and it came with mold🤮. I’m very upset about this because me and my family thought we could at least enjoy our quesadilla. I’m super upset about this and never coming back.

This restaurant is also an authentic Salvadorian store which is very cool. I’ve gone a couple of times and the food is always fresh and delicious. I’m Salvadorian and I love the pupusas and Plato típico. My absolute favorite. I will come back again!

Yelp
Another of the Cocina Latina chain. I don't know why they don't make their signage more obvious. Every location I've been to has been vastly different even though they're not more than 1-2 miles from each other. This is the definitely the cleanest even though the location is sketchy. There are guys just hanging outside the convenience store in the same strip doing nothing. I was the only customer when I entered at 6pm on a Saturday. Maybe why everything looked so clean and the buffet looked untouched. However, after the bad experience I had at the Bellaire location, I ordered off the menu. The prices were slightly higher than Sabor but at least it looked and tasted like the kitchen made my food fresh rather than grab it off the buffet. My huevos rancheros were tasty and so were my pupusas loroco without being mushy or having burned cheese. When I finished my meal at 7pm, large groups of families were starting to chow down on their plates.

Yelp
A friend and I came after a trip from Dallas. My friend was starving so we saw a pupusa buffet and set. The plaza we pulled up to isn't the most up kept. When we entered we were welcomed Jason server took real care of us he was very hospitable. He showed us the menu and explained the menu to us thoroughly. The buffet was pretty limited on selection but was pretty good with having pupusas made by order. The pupusas didn't take more than 10 minutes to come out which I appreciated. I tried all 8 so you wouldn't have to my favorites were the Pupusas Loroco and chicharrón. The service was really good but my only concern was the restroom floors being filled with water. I was told it was due to a machine in the back being broken. Honestly the explanation of why it was wet was poor but I saw it as a major safety hazard of someone slipping. The water wasn't backup it was clean there actually might have been soap in the water. Outside of that everything else was pretty good.

Yelp
An El Salvadoran friend of mine said she had a hankering for pupusas so after some searching I came across this place and decided to give it a go. The place was pretty dead, but it was 8pm or so, interestingly people actually came in even later than we did. I decided to hit up the buffet in order to try a few different things while my friend just had a plate with two pupusas. I thought the pupusas were good but some were hotter/fresher than others #buffetproblems. Not a huge selection, but about a half dozen different types of pupusas and some other things available. She said that the food was solid and authentic, but not quite as good as her mom's pupusas. Overall I enjoyed it and would go back, but I didn't like how they pre-included a 20% tip. Not sure if this is a buffet thing or just on all the checks. $12 for the buffet, including tax, tip and drink is a pretty good price!

Yelp
The place is very clean but overpriced for the buffet. $11.99 for the buffet. Pupusas were ok not the best I've tasted or even great for that matter. I wouldn't say i will be coming back. Price included drink and tamales. Also, we had to wait every-time we wanted a specific type of pupusa as they dont keep alot of pupusas out.

Yelp
Really enjoyed the Salvadorean food here, the place was clean and well taken care of. There was a buffet option but we ordered off the menu. My husband's from El Salvador and vouches that these Pupusas are legit. I personally love yucca frita and chicharon, everything was cooked well and tasted fresh. The bathroom was also really clean which is half the battle with any restaurant in my eyes. Lots of agua frescas to choose from and some pantry items for purchase. Overall recommend, enjoy! As others have noted the surrounding area is a bit sketchy and there are random guys hanging around the corner store down the way but we went in the afternoon with a baby and didn't have any trouble.

Yelp
This is a good pupusa buffet. They also have a menu that you can order plates from. I ordered the $9.95 buffet which included unlimited pupusas, caldo de pollo, tamales and aguas frescas. Well worth the price. They also have spicy and non spicy salsa and spicy and non spicy encurtido. The servers are helpful and friendly and the dining area is comfortable to eat in. I would come here again when I'm in Houston again.

Yelp
very flavorful Pupusas and a variety of other options in the buffet as well. Marañon and other drinks are included in the price making it one of the best bangs for your buck in Houston for pupusas.

Yelp
Ran into this place on the way to work. They had a grand opening sign, so I'm assuming they just opened recently. Inside is clean. I was greeted by a young lady, at which point you pay for the buffet. I had recently been to another pupusa buffet which had let me down because it was lacking flavor. This place definitely delivered. There is a good masa to filling ratio for a buffet place. Pupusas taste fresh. My favorite one is the Revuelta (cheese, bean and pork mixed together). They, of course, offer the Curtido (pickled cabbage salad) to go along with the pupusas. They have an array of aguas frescas to choose from. The pricing is very reasonable...if anything I think they can get away with charging more. Definitely recommend this if you want to have an unlimited pupusa fix.

Yelp
The food was good for the price. The chicken tamales were good. My favorite was the chicken soup. The wait staff are all very nice.

Yelp
A+++ Best Pupusas I've had. Great little gem we found this trip to Houston. Can't wait to try everything else on the menu. Excellent customer service made us feel very welcome and right at home.

Yelp
Really enjoyed the pupusas and tamales wrapped in banana leaves. The tamale dough was SO soft!! Had I not had so many, I would have tried the chicken soup that also looked and smelled delicious. FYI-the spicy cabbage IS spicy. The pupusas were big enough that my kids only had two each. They also sell cheese from Central America. I'll be back!
