This Singaporean restaurant in the Philippines attempts to bring the flavors of Singapore to the local dining scene, but some of the dishes take unexpected turns that don’t quite hit the mark.
The nasi goreng and char kuey teow, for instance, come across much sweeter than the versions you’d typically find in Singapore. Instead of the smoky, savory depth and umami punch these dishes are known for, the sweetness dominates, leaving them feeling unbalanced and a bit out of place. For those familiar with authentic Singaporean hawker fare, the difference can be disappointing.
On a more positive note, the laksa is a pleasant surprise. The broth is rich with coconut milk, fragrant with spices, and carries just the right level of heat to warm the palate. This dish comes closest to capturing the bold, comforting flavors you’d expect from a proper Singaporean laksa and is easily the highlight of the meal.
Overall, while the effort to localize flavors may appeal to some diners, the sweeter interpretation of staple dishes takes away from their authenticity. The laksa redeems the experience, but for anyone seeking a true taste of Singapore, this restaurant may feel like a mixed bag.
