The Best Restaurants Near Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, and Black Hills | Eater

"An unpretentious sports bar that pairs classic pub grub with strong local character: alongside wings and onion rings you’ll find bison sausage–stuffed mushrooms, bison chislic, pheasant confit flatbread, elk burgers, and tatanka strip steaks — a good place to taste regional game in a casual setting." - Matt Kirouac

Google
Chose to eat here based on reviews and husband’s choice since it was his birthday. Overheard another table ask about the lunch Reuben, so inquired as well. And they were able to make it for me for dinner, which was awesome! We ordered the kids cheeseburger and chicken tenders. For a whopping $12 each! Which is crazy to me on price, but even more crazier when it came out and I saw what it was. The fries had no flavor and tasted like oil/freezer and my daughter didn’t care for the tenders. The two tenders she got 🤣 with a huge side of fries. For $12 for a kids meal I would have hoped for bigger/better… The Reuben was just okay, I was hoping for a little more toasted as it was really soft and fell apart. My husband ordered the Sodak buffalo and said it was okay, the fries were burnt but still better tasting than the other fries. I’m hoping we were just there on an off night, but I wouldn’t recommend it. $65 for a mediocre meal…

Google
The first time trying buffalo and it was great, the chislic itself was very tasty but the house sauce had way too much of a vinegar taste for me personally. Was also not a fan of the garlic Parmesan fries as they were just doused in Parmesan cheese. The buffalo melt and the buffalo burger however were delicious, and the patty was cooked nicely at a medium rare. The veggies were fresh on the burger, but the side of coleslaw was not good and tasted like it was sitting out for a while. Overall a great experience if you want to try some buffalo.

Terri Montgomery

Google
Ate here twice while visiting. Restaurant is large and accommodating, although a bit loud and we were upstairs both times. The sliders and chicken salad were both good. Prices were a little high in my opinion. Overall, a good experience and we would return.

Google
We ordered the fish tacos, chicken burrito, beef burritos, nachos, and kids menu mac n cheese. These servings are huge and we could have split the burritos between 2 people. The food was good, our server was on top of filling our water and clearing our table. The sauces can be a bit spicy, but I asked for mine on the side.

Google
Service was great, food was phenomenal. Wife and I got the Tatanka Chislic to share, the sauce that came with it was delicious. I had the Bull Melt, replaced Angus for bison, it was one of the juiciest sandwiches I've ever had, fries were fresh, and crispy as well. No complaints from either of us!

Google
Great experience, and the food was amazing! Came here with my 3 kids (ages 3, 7 and 9) and my parents from France 🇫🇷 and we all absolutely loved the food! All 3 adults got the Buffalo steak tips and OMG so delicious! I highly recommend, worth every Penny. Every one was super nice, from the Lady who sat us, to the waiter and manager. We will definitely come back next time we are in town. We got served quickly too!

Andra

Google
We stopped in for lunch and it was amazing. I had the best salad I've ever had. It was the Roasted Apple Spinach Salad. My daughter had the Taco Salad and really like it also. Very good food, resonably priced and we had great service. We will be back for sure.

Google
After visiting the Crazy Horse Memorial, we were ready for something local and memorable. We made the short drive to Custer and ended up at the Buglin’ Bull. It was exactly what we were hoping for. The bison chislic 🦬 was outstanding. Crispy on the outside, tender inside, full of flavor, and served piping hot. It paired perfectly with the garlic parmesan fries. My wife had the Bull Melt and a Mint Collins, and both were excellent. The service was incredibly fast. We were seated right away and had our food within about fifteen minutes. Being there on the 4th of July with all the energy in town made it even more fun. Great food, great service, and a perfect stop after a long day of exploring.

Yelp
Despite being very busy, the service was outstanding and timely. We never had empty drinks. There was a wide variety of alcoholic beverages and the food was delicious. Although every table was full, the vibe was perfect and it wasn't too loud that you couldn't have a conversation with the person in front of you. We sat on the family dining side but would have loved to sit on the bar side.

Yelp
The food here was adequate. The service was dismissive and slow which was disappointing. When the food showed up, it was wrong but it took so very long to get it, I was not about to send it back. The iced tea was great!

Yelp
Some of the poorest service I have ever experienced. Waited an HOUR AND 15 MINUTES for our food. Only reason we didn't leave is because a lot of places nearby closed early. No discount, no comps, just a slight effort apology. People that arrived after us were getting their food before us. Only positive about this place was the delicious stuffed mushrooms. Save your time and go somewhere else.

Yelp
This seems to be a happening place in town. The service was great and the food was great. My husband and I both had the buffalo tips that were served with garlic mashed potatoes and roll. We ordered the side Caesar Salad ($4 with entree). All were great. My husband ordered medium rare for the buffalo tips and it was much more tender than mine (medium). If I had a do-over I'd order rare! The sauce and seasonings were great though. The drinks were great too. I had a Whiskey Sour and my husband had a Martini. Sorry I forgot to take a picture of the entree!!

Cindy M.

Yelp
Buglin' Bull was a nice establishment with good ambiance and food. After a busy day this place was open later than most in the area. We enjoyed the chicken sandwich and burger. Service was fast and it had friendly staff. Fairly priced.

Yelp
Against my better judgment, I trusted my hotel clerk, who said that this restaurant was worth a try. It was not. The food was OK, and not terrible, but the service was atrocious. I was with my family and another adult. Five of us got our food after a prolonged wait. Other tables that came in after us got their food before us. We all completed our meal while waiting for my wife to get her food. It never came. After all of our plates were clean her food came out. The waiter made a half hearted joke. There was no offer of any refund, or any discount. I do not recommend this restaurant. There are far better restaurants in the town. My one star is entirely related to the poor service. Skip this one.

Sherry H.

Yelp
We had an elk and bison cheeseburger with fries. The food was hot and came rather quickly. The service was much to be desired. We were almost finished with our meal before the waitress even checked on us once.
google avatar

Jessica P.

Yelp
I enjoyed my meal. The service was okay, lackluster at best, but the actual turkey sandwich was really good. As was the bison burger and Philly. French fries were basic--really not worth eating. Basic restaurant but we left satisfied.

Yelp
Located in Custer SD which is close to Mount Rushmore and other tourist attractions it is a great location. Plan an early dinner as all restaurants in Custer close at 9:00PM Buglin' Bull is inside only seating. It has a rustic bar feel/decor but, certainly family friendly, The menu is traditional Americana with a range of appetizers and entrees, including soups and salads. Of course, when in SD one must try a Buffalo burger which was quite tasty. My husband really enjoyed the pineapple salmon! Serving sizes are average-above average not huge but still plenty. The service was prompt and friendly. A shout out to our server, Terri. For a party of two she had her hands full with us ..it had been a long driving day!
google avatar

Judy B.

Yelp
Right on the main drag. Has a bar with sports and a dining area. Lots of elk painting of course. We had been traveling for days to get to SD and the wife needed a salad. She got the chicken crunch salad and ate all but a few forks worth that I grabbed. I got the bull burger and added cheese plus onion rings. Everything good. We also had a couple of house margs for a very nice meal. Service was good. Sorry no pics.
google avatar

Yelp
Not the best food we've ever had but was filling. The burger could've used a bit more sauce as it was a bit dry. The fries were ok, typical fries you would expect at a sports bar. The chicken on the salad was cooked well and the chipotle ranch had a nice kick to it. The cookie skillet was so so good, it was huge and served warm with ice cream. We sat upstairs and had our own TV at our booth which was very cool!

Rich H.

Yelp
Was able to get seated in 5 minutes, buffalo stuffed mushrooms are good but just a little dry. We both ordered the Sunday special surf and turf, steaks cooked medium comes with mixed vegetables.
google avatar

Jeffrey S.

Yelp
Blue bacon burger was good. Nice western style decor and environment. Friendly staff.
google avatar

Kim F.

Yelp
We like the food here so much we came back twice. We thoroughly enjoyed the Osoco and Anna food from my husband, and I need to share and still have leftovers. They also have nice beer and glasses, their salads are delicious and we also enjoyed their flatbread, which was really delicious. Our servers were extremely attentive, and the food came out very quickly and just perfect
google avatar

Penny R.

Yelp
A different bar and food place. They have some wild game. Elk,bison, quail, trout. All prepared in different ways. We tried the elk medallion. Tender, heavy on spices but flavorful. Quail bites were a definite would try again! Full bar with choose your own local craft beer flights available. Employees were not overly friendly (tourist season). They were more attentive to thier phones than customers.
google avatar

Marc E.

Yelp
We came here for dinner our first night in Custer. We ordered the rueben sandwich with fries. I got the Buffalo Snot local beer brewed at Rushmore Brewing. Bothe the beer and sandwich were good. We had good service too.
google avatar

Nancy E.

Yelp
While visiting Custer SD we came here for dinner. It has a bar and a dining area. We both got the Reuben and fries. It was pretty good a bit messy to eat but good. My husband tried the local Stout beer and said it was good.
google avatar

Yelp
Just came into town and checking that most restaurants were closed for Mother's Day, decided to drive downtown. Saw that Buglin' Bull was open and to my surprise this restaurant has legitimate delicious food! I tried the Oso Buco which was incredibly delicious with meat that was well seasoned and melted in my mouth. Paired with mash potatoes and fresh veggies made this an outstanding memorable meal. I also had the Buffalo Snit which went perfectly with the boar. Only thing was customer service was a little light, but I chalk that up to Mother's Day. My waiter was very good. When I was leaving there was a huge waiting crowd. I'd highly recommend trying Buglin' Bull

Yelp
Stopped here to grab a bite while visiting Mt Rushmore. I came here because I wanted toneat something exotic and saw Elk and Buffalo on the menu. I ordered the Buffalo tips, 1/2 order and the Elk medalions. The Buffalo tips came with a dipping sauce and weren't too shabby. The Elk medalions were ok, not bad, but I've had better which were way more tender and juicy, these were on the dryer more well done side. Come to think of it they didn't even ask how I wanted my meat cooked and served, that should of been the sign. All and all it was an ok bar and restaurant to stop in with a wild west feel, but I've definitely been to better. Service was good, but we did sit at the bar for quicker service.

Robyn A.

Yelp
The restaurant was fairly full but we were seated without a wait and our server was attentive and good. We tried the apple spinach salad and it was ok but the vinaigrette was a little too strong or sour tasting. Sweet potato fries and bull chip sides are tasty. Two in our group had bison burgers. One said it tasted like a normal hamburger and the other said he could definitely tell it was a bison burger. They both liked fine. Seating area looks a little run down but it is casual, comfortable.

Anne R.

Yelp
In town for the night and we chose to walk down the Main Street. We came across Buglin' Bull and decided to give it a try. We ordered the Sparkling Chicken and the Elk Medallions. Portions were plenty. Fresh green beans! The food was amazing.

Megan R.

Yelp
We were prepared to be disappointed with the food based on other reviews but decided to go for the rooftop seating. My husband and I both thoroughly enjoyed our meals! He said his cheesesteak was top 5 sandwiches he's ever had! My burger was very flavorful, fries & ranch were delicious! Service was great as well! The woman at the table next to us sought out the cook to compliment him on the pork too. We'd be back in a heartbeat!
google avatar

Jeffrey S.

Yelp
We stopped in here on a rainy afternoon to have lunch. The menu was large, the portions were generous. Our food was fresh. The pulled pork was a little "odd" as it was more pasty than pulled. The ham and bean soup was "ok". The space was crowded and busy, so if you come at the height of lunch, be prepared for a line to get a table.

Erin W.

Yelp
Awesome place to eat in Custer. It's popular, so there might be a wait, but it's worth it. Food is delicious and reasonably priced for what you get and a tourist town. Staff are friendly and work hard. Definitely end your meal with the skillet chocolate chip cookie- so good!
google avatar

Ann M.

Yelp
Always a favorite go to restaurant!! Staffing is good and so many different meals to choose from when you visit!!! Looking forward to going back next week!! Great service and location!

Lolah L.

Yelp
I had the chicken fried steak. At first sight, I could tell it was not fresh but came how I would buy a Frozen chicken fried steak from Walmart. I had 3 pieces of cartilage in my steak! The potatoes & fresh veggies were decent. The roll was cold, which we're not used to in Texas - it couldn't melt the cold, hard butter I put on it. My husband had the beef broccoli & rice - kind of like the Chinese version. It tasted strange. The beef wasn't cut thin, they were chunks. Dont recommend this place at all.

Heinz Ketchup Enjoyer R.

Yelp
Had my first elk burger here! Very good restaurant with nice staff who work hard to create a positive atmosphere!

BOB A.

Yelp
We were looking for something different than the usual pizza or burger places for dinner. We were NOT disappointed with Buglin Bull! The Bison Tip and Teriyaki Stirfry plates were fantastic! The service was great. The ambiance is western, which we liked. They sat us in the loft area where we had our own little tv. We were able to have a nice, cozy, quiet dinner (watching baseball) after a strenuous hiking day at Custer Park. And the chocolate cake was a nice finish to a great meal. Our waiter (forgot his name) looked like Lou Diamond Phillips. He was spot on, making sure our meals were satisfactory and our glasses were full. Great job!

Chad M.

Yelp
5 stars for service and ambience. Wait staff and bartender did a great job. 2.5 stars for the food. Wife had cheesy broccoli soup which see liked. She also had coconut shrimp that she wasn't too happy with. I had chicken fried steak. Not the worst but no where close to the best. Probably brought in a by a truck. Maybe there are some menu items that are better. I certainly hope so because I really want to like this place. I'm sure finding a cook is hard that can make home style food. So pre-prepared food maybe their only option.
google avatar

Tony M.

Yelp
No issues here. Good food, service, and atmosphere. Since we are here all summer, we shall return. See our YouTube channel Coolest Life.
google avatar

Melanie M.

Yelp
My mom and I came on a Wednesday night and didn't have to wait. I got the wrangler burger with parmesan-garlic fries. The food was ok- burger wasn't flavorful and was dry and then the parmesan-garlic fries had no flavor. The fries were just topped with fake parmesan. My mom's onion rings were the only good food. It was also very hot inside with flies flying around. The service was alright.
google avatar

Stephen M.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch on Father's Day. It was quite busy. We were Seated quickly on the upper level however it took a bit before our server show up. Once he did he was very quick and attentive. I ordered the Rueben with Parmesan Fries. Meat was not very tender and it could have used more cheese. Fries were a mixed bag. Some were tasty while others were over cooked. Place was just ok.

Bob C.

Yelp
Great prices and large servings. Everything tasted amazing! Service was spot on, we had a waitress when needed.

Kris K.

Yelp
Good service started this dinner off well. Took our time and was not rushed. Started with the pheasant flat bread which was very interesting and a tasty alternative to the standard. And it was very large. Ended up sharing an elk burger which was perfectly cooked and salad.
google avatar

Cyndi A.

Yelp
Run from this restaurant! The service is slow, our server had her hair hanging in her eyes as she took our order and served us. The burger looked like a hockey puck and the Reuben sandwich literally made me sick . Skip this one!
google avatar

Judith S.

Yelp
It's fine. It was open on a Monday for lunch and that's all we needed. The food was pretty typical from an American grill. Service was fairly fast, which was a plus.
google avatar

Starr L.

Yelp
Great place, wonderful atmosphere and superior service. Highly recommend! We had the Reuben sandwich, our friends loved their burger and taco salad.
google avatar

Sharee R.

Yelp
I ordered the pineapple salmon dish. There were 2 tiny pineapple pieces on top. Salmon was over cooked and dry. Wild rice was pretty mushy. My margarita was the only thing I really liked. My kids fries were soggy in their kids meals
google avatar

Tanya H.

Yelp
We are locals and have not been here in a few years. We got the wrangler burger and the black and blue. We were all satisfied with the burger. The Black and Blue burger was so nice to have melted blue cheese crumbles, sautéd mushrooms; that attention to detail was much appreciated. Note of improvement; burger could have used more seasoning itself but in general we had a very pleasant meal. Wait

Bekki O.

Yelp
We had an amazing experience!! Great bar tender! My husband's Osso Buco was the best he ever had. I had the Mac and cheese with chicken and my aunt had the walleye. The drinks were delicious! We sat at the bar so we didn't have to wait for a table. When we left there was a long line. I really enjoyed this restaurant.

Anita G.

Yelp
We had a wonderful dinner. Stephen is such a wonderful, kind, loving person. Wonderful personality. A sweetheart. The restaurant is awesome. Best meal ever. God bless you all. Stephen God bless you. Good luck always .
google avatar

Dean B.

Yelp
We got there about noon for lunch. Sat at the bar. First the bartender that was working on 6/12 was awesome. Quick to get our beer order. Quick to get our lunch order. We had the basic cheeseburger with onion rings and the Philly cheese steak with onion rings. I'd say the food was what I expected at a mountain bar. Not great, not bad. The 4 star rating was purely based on the service from the bartender.

Mandy M.

Yelp
This was the first restaurant we ever ate at in Custer. we were seated right away and service was fast! Terri took care of us including telling us the special and sharing her favorite dishes. we ordered burgers with onion rings and fries. the food was nice and hot! the burgers were juicy. the restaurant was clean, there were tvs at the booths.
google avatar

Kayla K.

Yelp
This place was great! Friendly service and food was tasty. Got buffalo steak tips which were delicious. Boyfriend got the Tatanka chislic. Also tasty.
google avatar

John A.

Yelp
We were there July 15, had dinner. Hamburger was awful, ordered onion rings they were good until we got to the bottom and found someone's chewed up gum yuck!!!! Lost my appetite and couldn't finish my dinner. Waiter did not offer to get manager we asked him to take off onion rings he should have taken my dinner off . Would not recommend this place.
google avatar

Randy W.

Yelp
A bit pricey for just ok food. Service was good. It was busy Friday night. Not terrible but very average.

Christine K.

Yelp
Delicious food and friendly service. 100% recommend! Two in our group ordered the Sparkling Chicken and thought it was absolutely delicious. We also ordered the Bull Burger and fries which were good, and the Wagyu Cheesesteak and Parmesan Garlic Fries. I'd order the Parmesan Fries over the regular ones, they were yummy!
google avatar

Linda K.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere. Good service. Enjoyed the Buffalo meatloaf and the ranchers beef pie.

Barbara C.

Yelp
Good food and fast service. My burger was done, just right. My husband had the pasta and it was very good also.
