Buk Chang Dong Soon Tofu is a staple in Koreatown for soon tofu - perfect for cold winter days. The interior is cozy and casual, and service is pretty fast and attentive.
We came for a late lunch on a weekend afternoon. It was busy and most tables were occupied, but we were seated right away. The banchan selection of the day included bean sprouts, marinated beans, and kimchi. I wish they had the seasoned spinach with sesame and fish cakes!
The menu is pretty simple, with most of the mains being the various soon tofu varieties. I ordered the Vegetables Soon Tofu, which came in a sizzling hot pot consisting of various vegetables (zucchini, broccoli, carrot, mushrooms, onion). It was served with hot stone pot rice (loved the purple rice!) and raw eggs to crack into the soup. The taste was the same compared to the soon tofu I've had in other Korean restaurants, so it was familiar, warm, and comforting. I always love pouring hot soup onto rice so it was perfect. It was soo filling and I wasn't able to finish all of the rice. The raw eggs were great for cracking open into the bubbling hot soon tofu, and mixing them with the rice, creating a soupy scrambled eggs consistency within seconds. And as always, scraping the bottom of the hot stone rice is a must when eating rice in hot stone pot.
Note that you have to specify if you want your soon tofu to be mild or non-spicy, otherwise it'll come out as a pot of bubbling deep red soup (can be very spicy). One of my friends got the Seafood Soon Tofu but it came with only a few pieces of seafood, although the tofu was still good. Another ordered the Gamja-tang with rice and said it was decent but not as good as the ones in other Korean restaurants.
In addition to soon tofu, the menu also has other Korean rice and soup dishes such as hot stone pot bibimbap, spicy squid with rice, gamja-tang, kimchi fried rice, etc.
