We have just stayed at The Bull Inn in Burford for a weekend to celebrate my husband’s birthday. ||The hotel itself is absolutely beautiful – our room (the Market Room) was stunning, beautifully decorated, with thoughtful touches such as a drinks and snacks trolley. The bathroom was equally lovely, with underfloor heating adding a touch of luxury.||Unfortunately, a few details took away from what could have been a perfect stay. The fudge on the trolley had gone out of date the previous month, and the peanut brittle was due to expire shortly – not what you would expect when paying a premium for such a stay.||We dined in the restaurant (Horn) and, while the food itself was absolutely delicious, the experience was overshadowed by service and comfort issues. Our table was in the centre of the restaurant near the door to the rear dining area, which was left open, making it very cold – we ended up eating with our jackets on. Service was warm when we arrived, but sadly wasn’t maintained. We asked twice and waited over 25 minutes for a dessert menu that never arrived, and in the end just asked for the bill. Meanwhile, another table (who were not hotel guests) received extra attention from the manager, champagne, and a cake after an issue – which made our own disappointing service feel even more noticeable. For what was meant to be a special birthday celebration, it left us quite underwhelmed. ||Breakfast the following morning sadly continued the theme. We were told the smoothie machine was broken, so the healthy menu options weren’t available. When our full breakfasts arrived, my husband’s poached eggs were closer to boiled eggs, and although the waiter eventually asked if he would like replacements, by then he had already finished eating. Small but important details were missing too – no butter for toast, no teaspoons for coffee – which again fell short of the premium standard the hotel projects.||Overall, The Bull Inn is a quirky and gorgeous property, with beautifully designed rooms and great food. However, the service throughout our stay was inconsistent, lacking attention to detail, and left us disappointed. With more care and better staffing, this could easily be a five-star experience.
