Bull City Ciderworks - Review - City Center - Durham - The Infatuation

"Even if you’re someone who only thinks of cider as a lesser beer alternative for the gluten-free crowd, this craft cidery on the outskirts of downtown Durham will change your mind. It’s hard to go wrong with the dry flagship cider, but it’s the more experimental brews that we really love. If it’s your first visit, get a flight of options like a ginger-based Rhize Up, Cherry Tart, and honey-infused Sweet Carolina. The industrial indoor space is filled with long communal tables, and the outdoor picnic tables on their huge front lawn are great if you have dogs or kids tagging along." - Christine Byrne

Google
We were there for a dog adoption event and I decided to try one of their ciders. I got the Tart Cherry Cider and it was really good. The location is great, but the parking is somewhat challenging to find. I love that they had a lot of ciders, since I have Celiac and am gluten free. But I would love it if some of their beer offerings were also gluten free/gluten reduced. The space itself is awesome. They have a large game room with a pool table and arcade games, that one of my teenagers really gravitated towards. And the dog adoption event with Freedom Ride Rescue was great! So many lovable dog options, from young to old, and the fosters were very knowledgeable about the temperament and backstory of each one. Overall, a great experience!

Google
Love this place! They have a great selection of ciders. I am not typically a huge cider person but they have ones that I like! They have unique flavors versus other places that just have like three fruit flavors. We got flights which is always tons of fun! They also had board games so we were able to play and hang out while we drank. There’s a pretty good amount of seating. We went on a Sunday so it was dead but I still think most times there would be enough seating.

Google
I love cider and I appreciate Bull City Ciderworks. Love to grab dinner from the visiting food truck and hang with friends, or play trivia. Dogs welcome!

Google
Really awesome cidery! All the ciders we tried tasted great and weren't overly sweet. Staff was really friendly and helpful in walking us through the menu. And I always appreciate a spot that has a bunch of board games available. For beer drinkers, there are several local taps available as well ... and while we were there, a food truck was on site (and whatever they were making smelled delicious).

Google
The night was spooky, October 31, 2022. The rain soaked parking lot, though it was rather elusive, served as a starting place for a night of tasty terror. We started with a freaky flight and loved the honey cider best, a bloody good treat it was. Would most certainly come back.

Google
Great place to grab a beer! The have up to 16 different ciders to choose from, with guest beers featured as well. Staff is wonderful and encourages you to sample the different beers and even mix ciders. Sounds crazy I know but trust me, they're delicious. Outside seating area for the nice sunny days, board games you can bring to your table, and tours coming soon! Highly recommended

Google
Cider, Cider, Cider. What a great place. After inspecting a construction work day was over and I sure needed a drink. This place has been open since 2013 smack dab in the middle of Downtown Durham. Outside seating, inside seating and a great place to meet up with friends.

Google
Good dog friendly spot, and generally underappreciated. They have beer as well as cider and both are good (personal favs are the imperial stout and the tart cherry cider). They usually have a food truck and the schedule is online. Weeknights typically have trivia or something like that. Seating is mostly high top bench seating but there is also some bar space as well as some couches for lounging. They occasionally will feature a band in the outside area. They also have a pool table and a handful of games in the side room area.

Yelp
Came for my first Yelp event with my friend who's an Elite! It was great! The staff was friendly. Drinks were cold! We had a great food truck. I love the inside/outside atmosphere. It's a very chill vibe!

Yelp
One of the first things you notice as you enter the BC Ciderworks establishment is the clearness of the place, the openness of the place, and also how friendly and welcoming the staff are as they greet you with such broad and genuine smiles! I had such an enjoyable time hanging out at this place. They are even thoughtful enough to give you samples of the cider as well as giving you a full rundown on the flavor profile as you sip and taste. Also, they are not stingy with their sampling - which is so cool. They have a game room off to the right of the entrance for those who wish to get their game-on. Large screens TV's are available for your perusal as well. Very comfortable place with a wide range of seating to relax on as you sip your libations. I'll be back! #bullcitydrm

Yelp
Great service with added arcade and board games! There are tons of cider options as well as cocktail and beer options for all your friends. They had a food truck with options for food, but also so close to many things. Inside had dog friendly table, bar, and couch seating. There's a small parking lot there connected to the wine bar too which makes for an easy and fun visit!

Yelp
My only visit here (so far) coincided with a Taylor Swift Trivia Contest and the place, as you can imagine, was packed! And filled with plenty of energy. My son and I were not dissuaded by the long line due to the reputation and ratings of BCC. Our wait in line was worth the time and effort. My son ordered the pineapple guava slushie and I ordered a flight of four ciders. Flights of five ciders are another option. BCW also offers cocktails and non-alcoholic beverages of sodas and kombucha. On this evening, I ordered Rhize Up, the Matador, Créme de l'Orange, and Pom Pom Cherie. All four were tasty in their respective flavor profiles. Seasonal ciders are offered and the BCC website lists the names, flavors and drop dates. The location offers indoor seating with long tables and big screen TVs. Outdoor seating varies from individual seating to stand up seating. A fire pit is located in one corner. On this occasion, no fire was seen. When I'm in the area again and in the mood for cider, I'll head here.

Yelp
Was visiting NC and wanted to try this cider place. We got a flight with el matador, cherry tart, orange cream, a double IPA and blue berry lemon. The el matador was my favorite. It was a strawberry flavor with a hint of habanero (super subtle). The service was fast and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The ambiance was great and there were many board games for a big group to hang out. This place is very dog friendly as well.

Yelp
Bull City Ciderworks does cider right and I love that they have both foundational flavors and rotating ciders depending on the season. My tried and true favorite is the pineapple cider and my latest favorite holiday flavor was the Sasquash. There's plenty of indoor and outdoor seating and sometimes they have food trucks too. Love this cider spot and love that their flights are affordable and delicious so you can try their multiple flavors!

Yelp
My mother's a cider person. I wanted to take her here when I first heard of this place. I am happy with my experience in the taproom. You have a warehouse-style open lounge with a shelf of board games and playing cards. You have plenty to do while you sit back and enjoy your drinks. There's also wi-fi if you want to bring your laptop for a change of scenery while working your remote job. I decided to share two flights between me and my parents. That's ten different ciders! I let mom pick the ciders in the first flight. I chose the ciders in the second. The first flight was made up of drinks off their Core Ciders list. The second featured their seasonal and rotating drinks. Our favorites are the Cherry Tart, the Bluelacris, the Daily Rind, and the Sweet Caroline. Others had interesting tastes. The bartenders were cheerful, something I think is sorely needed in light of recent tragedies. I think this place will be humming with activity once all the apartment buildings are finished. The Ciderworks is in a great spot. It's not the best with parking (as with most downtown venues), but it's great for getting out of the house and bringing the dog along. Check out their events calendar for live music, trivia, watch parties, and other happenings.

Yelp
I love Bull City Ciderworks! I used to come here often with friends to get the 4-5 cider flights and sit on the patio during the summer. They always have new and delicious flavors that are fun to try out without committing to one thing. They also have a few board games to pass time and a food truck on some days. Good vibes all around!

Yelp
Duh I need to admit: I dislike cider. They are just boring. Boring in a way that I don't know if I should blame bull city has some bad cider or I just don't like cider in general. Had some flights and they all taste the same. Place is very nice with plenty room and dogs. Price is also fine. Hmm 3.5

Yelp
If i lived here, I would be coming back to hang out! They have a nice indoor space that opens out to the outdoor lawn, perfect for those warmer days! I was pretty full from lunch so didn't up getting a flight but tried a couple of samples and settled for my favorite flavor, pineapple, called the upside down. This is great if you like something a little bit sweeter like I do and it doesn't have an after taste like some of their other ciders do. Tastes more like a light pineapple soda. I love the names of all their ciders too - very creative and festive!

Yelp
Really great cider in a really fun atmosphere! We came in accidentally on a Sunday night when they were doing music bingo. It was one of the best music bingos I've been to and would highly recommend going when they do this. All the ciders we tried were tasty. Seems like the type of place where you can't go wrong. The parking is a bit confusing here, and I unfortunately can't clarify for you the best thing to do about this, but we did park in front of the wine store and didn't get towed so I can tell you that much. Be sure to pay them a visit (or ten).

Saved A.

Yelp
Music is extremely loud as someone who lives next to the place and the music is horrible. It makes this a terrible experience and it's past closing time and they're still blasting music

Yelp
It's cider szn!! Durham has a cider spot that will make any apple orchard seem for kids. That's because these are wonderfully brewed! #alcohol They have a "core" menu of their classics as well as some seasonal blends and a featured menu with some other breweries. You can get a flight if four or five for $10 or $12, respectively. (Not like our current political climate.) Or any of their brews for a decent price. They are really friendly and are socially distancing until COVID-19 is under control. Anyways, check this place out!!

Yelp
If you missed all the signs like I did, Bull City Ciderworks is located behind the wine feed. Park at wine feed/pine & poplar and then walk around the building to the side entrance. Once I figured that out it was smooth sailing from there. Upon arrival I was greeted by the bartender. I already had in mind what I wanted so I purchased four crowlers to go ($10 each). I enjoyed Cherry Tart and Rhize Up. I was surprised that I didn't like the OYAH (Orange you a hippie). It was bland and did not taste like orange or hibiscus. I realized later that night that I am not a fan of crowlers. They are reasonably priced and you get a lot of cider. Unfortunately they are best if you drink the entire can in one day since you cannot reseal it. I am not able to drink it all in one sitting so I should have purchased their 4 pack of bottles instead. I would recommend their Cherry Tart and Rhize Up ciders to others and would return to try their other creations!

Yelp
My wife and I met here on our first date and the place has okay sweet cider and had great staff that kept the place lively. Recently though massive changes have made our enjoyment significantly shift and honestly it's losing ground in the community. With all the new buildings surrounding you'd think it would be packed all the time, but it's folks that don't live there that always frequented Bull City and there has never been a great parking situation. They've lost their marketing brand and I see it at fewer and fewer places. Get back to your roots and providing a quality experience and product otherwise your grocery offerings will continue to decrease in prominence.

Yelp
Bull City Ciderworks is a pretty neat place for quality cider. The menu is mind-blowing! Just when I thought cider couldn't get anymore creative...BAM! The variety of flavors is off the charts. The flavors were very unique and different, nothing like I've seen before. I enjoy fruity flavors and I was surprised to see mango, pineapple, blueberry, etc. It was like cider heaven. We got the sampler which came with 5 ciders of your choice -- about $11-12 which is not bad. After sharing the 5 ciders, I was buzzed. Imagine if I drank all 5? Overall, I love the space. It was super spacious with enough seats to accommodate a big party. The seating outside is also pretty awesome. Great place to chill with friends and share food/beverage.

Yelp
Amazing! We went at 3 on a Saturday afternoon. We both had a flight (she picked well, me not so much - I didn't enjoy the Tart me up in the Morning - it's "finished on" coffee). Band started playing and a good time was had by all. Dogs everywhere so bring your pooch if you like that. Staff was very helpful. Great seating outside Will be back!

Yelp
A short walk from the Durham Bulls stadium, this place has an amazing atmosphere and delicious drinks. I really loved the outdoor seating and there is ample space inside in the event of rain or bad weather.
google avatar

Amanda J.

Yelp
Bull City Ciderworks is super cute and a great place to come to enjoy a bunch of different cider flights with friends! While most of the outdoor seating is not heated, there are a few heat lamps by about three tables and a large indoor dining area. My roommate and I ordered flights and just asked the bartender for her favorite options. I really loved their standard ciders and two of the fall seasonals, both of which were a cinnamon apple flavor. The beet was fun to try too. The staff was super friendly!! They also sell products from other local vendors as well. My only complaint is that a lot of parents come here and let their kids run around while they have half of a cider over a few hours. If weekends after 5 pm were 21+, I would be more inclined to come more often.
google avatar

Yelp
We love trying new breweries, especially ones that are pet friendly since we often have one or both of our little dogs with us. It's even better when we can take them inside a place that's air conditioned! We came in here this past Sunday around 3pm, it was fairly busy, but not overly crowded. I like beer, but a cider spot is even more enticing to me. I was so excited to see how many flavors they had! I believe they had 16 available on our visit, but there were also a couple of beers on tap. We each went for a flight, for $12 we could try 5 ciders. I tend to like sweeter ciders, but they had a nice mix. I really liked "Rhize Up" with it's ginger taste, but wished it was a tad sweeter like one of my favorite cider spots (Citizen Cider) in Vermont has. I tried a sip of "Cherry Tart," good, but a bit TOO sweet. I liked "Cardinal Cin," with it's unique cinnamon flavor. "Pearanormal" and "Mojito" were also quite good! They sell 6 packs of their ciders, t-shirts, hats, hoodies, pint glasses, dog collars and more. We had a fun time here and can't wait to come back.
google avatar

Hana M.

Yelp
Such a fun place to hang out with friends! Both the indoor and outdoor areas are open and pleasant. I am more of a cider than beer person so this was perfect for me. They had so many cider flavors I was surprised! We had a flight and it was great to try their various flavors. My favorite was the blueberry lemon but they were all good.
google avatar

Tiff T.

Yelp
Super cute place to just hang out and relax with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. They told us they have live music on certain nights. We ordered the flight of 4 for $10 and were able to pick out which we wanted. All were really good to me (see photos). Then had at least 12 options to choose from as well as a slushee of the day. They also sold their cider in single bottles and a 4 pack.
google avatar

Lauren M.

Yelp
What a delicious cidery! I am not typically a cider person, but these were so good. We started out with just a drink but quickly decided to get a flight! Our beer was so good that we had to try more. I am so pleased by all the different options they offer here. My absolute favorite was sweet carolina. It had a hint of honey and it was amazing. I didn't expect honey in beer to be so good, but they really proved me wrong. My boyfriend loved the upcide down! It is a pineapple flavored cider. Pineapple is not my favorite but if you love it, get this! Overall, I would say try this place out if you live in the area. I can't believe I haven't been here yet! I will be coming back.
google avatar

Jackie V.

Yelp
Great ciders! Definitely get a flight or two to try a bunch of them. We loved the pumpkin spice mixed with the beetnik. Lots of outdoor seating and heating lamps. LGBTQ and pet friendly!!
google avatar

Yelp
I have to give a HUGE shout out to Bull City Ciderworks! After closing on my first house yesterday afternoon, I called ahead to order 2 growlers for pick up and mentioned that I was planning to celebrate the purchase of my first home with some cider. I was pleasantly surprised that at the time of pick up, the staff provided me with two complementary pint glasses! It was such a kind gesture and what I'm considering my first official house warming gift. Thank you so much! You made a regular out of me!! Thank you again.
google avatar

Sarah J.

Yelp
Always a pleasure to go here - staff is super welcoming and friendly, and the wide array of ciders and local beers is awesome. Love the consistent seasonal rotation of ciders, super unique!
google avatar

May H.

Yelp
They have a great cider selection, my favorite being the Pineapple one. The flights are very reasonable with 4 for $10 and 5 for $12. Slushees are pretty good too, but they sell out very fast. Overall a nice space with lots of room for social distancing!
google avatar

Allison C.

Yelp
Great hang-out spot with a laid-back vibe. Indoor and outdoor seating. Dog friendly. Lots of ciders to choose from; there's the mainstays and also the seasonals. I usually like to get a flight and try a variety of different flavors. Some are definitely a little weird (can be in a good or bad way), but once you know what you like you can order a full pint. My absolute favorite is Cherry Tart. Local beers too, though I'm not sure why you'd choose beer over cider at a ciderworks (they have hoppy and dry ciders that are decent). There's often a food truck parked out front. Otherwise, no food. There are board games available, but I don't think they're super well-maintained. My one complaint is that the bartenders can be a bit unfriendly and impatient. Parking can also be annoying when it gets busy - mostly street.

Lillie B.

Yelp
Had an amazing time there with my sis for her birthday! We got a tasting of the 5 different flavors.
google avatar

Lana L.

Yelp
This place is so awesome. They have the best flavors of cider and they are super unique. It's hard to pick just one or two, so I chose to get a flight of 4 ciders, which was only $10. I had the Matador (strawberry + habanero), Compassion Fruit (passionfruit), a watermelon one, and the Pit Stop (black tea + peach). My favorite was probably the Pit Stop, followed by a tie between the watermelon cider and the Compassion Fruit, and then the Matador. The Matador was unique and an overall good cider, but may have been too spicy for me. You could feel each sip in your nose! There are also boardgames you can play while you sip on your cider. My friends and I played a good game of Scrabble. Taste | 5 Atmosphere | 4 Presentation | 4 Service | 4 OVERALL | 5
google avatar

Selena Y.

Yelp
Bull City Ciderworks is a great place to chill with friends - there's live music on the weekends, a large and open space (dog friendly too!), plenty of board games to play, and of course an awesome selection of their core & seasonal ciders and guest beers on tap. I have a major sweet tooth, so it's a given that the sweetest cider Compassion Fruit was my favorite, but I also really enjoyed the core cider Rhize Up (ginger) and the surprising kick of the Matador (strawberry & habanero). It was pretty empty on the Saturday night that I went - this place definitely deserves more attention, it's such a fun and laidback place to hang out!
google avatar

Stephanie J.

Yelp
Words can't explain how happy I am that Bull City is finally open again, this time in their new and improved location. I freaking love this cider. The new location is more spacious and beautiful! Plus, it is dog friendly inside. Want to try a few ciders? Grab a flight of 4 for $10. Off Main, Cherry Tart and Compassion Fruit are my personal top three favorite ciders. I wish the Cherry Tart was a tad more tart this visit though. Like I previously stated, I love this place so it will be a must visit if I am in Durham.
google avatar

Jeff F.

Yelp
I haven't been to Bull City since they were in the old location. I must say this place is a huge upgrade! For one, it's huge! With a nice patio, and even seating in the parking lot. Perfect place for food trucks! And the bathrooms are even new and clean! I've always loved their ciders, and they have so many options now it's difficult to choose! That's why the flight is so awesome! I think the mojito cider was my favorite, it has a very light, refreshing taste that is perfect on a hot summer day!
google avatar

Erica P.

Yelp
I'll admit, the reason I didn't want to review this place sooner is that I wanted to keep it all to myself :) However, my therapist told me that I was being selfish, so here I am sharing this gem with all of you. This place is thebomb.com! I love the myriad of options for beer, cider, and non-alcoholic drinks alike. Bartenders are always super friendly and very willing to mix different ciders to come up with your perfect concoction. Bonus: this place is dog-friendly! Lots of indoor and outdoor seating make this a cool place to grab a drink (or a few) and catch up with/make new friends, furry or human!
google avatar

Anna L.

Yelp
This is our favorite place to hang out and chill!!! We love the cider- love the Cherry Tart, Off Main, and Sweet Carolina. Also you can mix different ciders to create a whole new flavor! We had Cherry Pie which is a combination of Cherry Tart and Cardinal Cin (seasonal) and it was delicious. They also have a warm cider which was also good (I forget what it's called though...), especially on a cold night! They also have crafts, activities, trivias, and other events regularly a scheduled which makes it more fun. The place is not super big, but has plenty of room inside and outside. Also nightly food trucks are always a plus! Would definitely recommend and this is my place of choice to bring out of town friends to.
google avatar

Britney P.

Yelp
A really fun place to be on trivia nights! Their cider is amazing and the staff are all extremely nice!
google avatar

Yelp
Super cool cidery in downtown Durham. It's a little off the beaten path behind a building that's not yet occupied and across the street from a not-yet-compete apartment building so you might miss it. It's a big open space with plenty of wooden picnic style tables and benches for seating. There are also a few tables on the outside deck. I went with one person but this could easily be a fun time for a group as they also have plenty of board games to play while you drink. I also love that they make their own ciders/beer and have an open wall to see it being made. There's a pretty extensive menu and since this was the first visit, we both got cider flights which at $10/piece, isn't a bad deal. They have a core, seasonal and limited offering of ciders so if you may not get the same thing on your next visit. Of the core, I tried the Off Main, Smooth Hoperator (one of my favs), and Rhize Up. Some were definitely better than others but overall, pretty good. Can't wait to go back!
google avatar

Glenn G.

Yelp
We were fans of theirs when they were in a tiny garage-like place that had no AC (it was torn down to make room for Durham's new police station). Over the years they've added to their list of regular flavors with experimental seasonal flavors, my favorites recently being strawberry habanero. Not all of their newer flavors do it for me, but I do find that I like their fruitier ciders over their dry ciders. The atmosphere is very communal and friendly; you'll see dogs and families. They also offer themed trivia nights and other activities like standup comedy, music, silent book clubs, yogo and more. We don't come here as much as we used to since my wife cut down on alcohol for health reasons but it's still one of our favorite places to go in Durham.
google avatar

Taryn L.

Yelp
An excellent variety of ciders and they were all delicious! Great space and friendly and helpful staff. Can't wait to come back and remember to bring a growler to fill!
google avatar

Cecilia J.

Yelp
Couldn't resist coming back for a second round and it was still amazing. In just the few days in between my visits, they had come up with 2-3 new seasonal ciders including the beet one that I tried upon the employee's recommendation. It was a stunning purple color and had a really warm barley-ish aftertaste. I also didn't realize that Bull City Ciderworks occasionally has food trucks parked in the outdoor space, but this time around I was lucky enough to try the chicken patacon from Arepas House food truck which was there until 7pm. The food truck guy was really nice and worked past his closing time. I'd never had a patacon before, but it's a Venezuelan fried plaintain sandwich loaded with lettuce/tomato/chicken/cheese/corn and it was really delicious! If I lived in Durham I would definitely be in trouble.
google avatar

Yumi R.

Yelp
Big fan! The staff are knowledgeable and excited to share the variety of ciders. They are not stingy with their pours. I also love that they had games to borrow/play. Plenty of tables. The weird cider was the one that they apparently just put an entire Christmas tree into the vat. *For the holidays* hahaha I really enjoyed this place.
google avatar

Arianna G.

Yelp
Favorite cidery in the area! Each cider is sooo good and also has a really cute and clever name. Location is great for big or small groups as there is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. My go to, favorite cider is "orange you a hippie".
google avatar

Brett G.

Yelp
A variety of ciders with creative flavors. A large outdoor seating area in an industrial part of the city. Often features food trucks and music.
google avatar

Sarah G.

Yelp
Cider fans will love this spot, as there's options galore--which isn't usually the case at a regular bar. What I'm a fan of, though, is the plentiful seating options and board games. Drinks are a little on the pricier side, but if you can't drink beer I feel like it's worth it.
google avatar

Janet C.

Yelp
Love all the unique and mostly delicious ciders! Favorite we tried was the Apple Pie and the Ants on a Log cider was disturbingly gross (peanut butter and celery flavor). Awesome opportunity to go outside your comfort zone by selecting flights to try. They will even mix flavors for a whole different taste experience. The peanut butter one was better with a jam like flavor for a PB&J concoction - much better but still would not be my first choice. Luckily they have a lot of choices to appease everyone.
google avatar

Vivian Q.

Yelp
Wow, what a unique and fun spot! Came here to hang out on a weekend afternoon and shared a flight of ciders: Off Main (classic taste), Pearanormal (limited flavor, sweet and fruity), Spruce Bringsteen (seasonal flavor, but not the best if you prefer your ciders sweeter like I do), Compassion Fruit (limited, strong passion fruit flavor and very sweet), and Rhize Up (my personal favorite because I love ginger). Space is spacious, lively, with plenty of people bringing their dogs!
google avatar

Sujung S.

Yelp
Such a cute place! We went on a Friday night with a big group. Great place to hang out with friends- big open space, lots of wooden tables, dog friendly, board games, live music, ciders, and food truck. They have great selection of ciders. I really liked Sweet Carolina (Honey)! It's the typical traditional cider. Next time, I might just get a flight to try different ciders!
google avatar

A A.

Yelp
I love it here. Tasty ciders, new releases often, creative, fun, and inclusive events. Dog friendly inside and out! Games available. Family friendly so in the daytime you may encounter the little ones.

Yelp
Stoped by with some friends during Covid for an outside meet up. The flights were great with an outside food truck. If you need a nice outside afternoon. I really recommend getting a table and enjoy.
