"The aesthetic may veer a little "Ye Olde Route 66 Knick-Knack Decorated Bar Place," but the excellent specials, more than fair prices and tacos wrapped up in piping hot homemade tortillas are legit. Big bar in the heart of Wicker Park. Lots of local beers on tap and a friendly staff of bartenders waiting to serve you asap. Come here with friends and family or even coworkers. I would recommend this place for Company outings or Sunday fun day. I will definitely be back here again and again and again.

Google
Don't get me wrong, this place is kind of a dive - and it's great. Food is awesome and inexpensive. Vibes are good with real candles. Burger and tacos are above average and worth stopping by for. Wish I lived closer, stop by if you're in the neighborhood.

I really can't say enough good stuff about Bullhead. I live down the street from here and I go here all the time when I get hungry. The tacos are awesome and very creative, reasonably priced too. On Tuesdays they are all 2 dollars, which is an awesome deal. On Wednesdays their burgers (which are also really really good) are 6 bucks. Every day there is the taco, shot and tallboy deal which you really can't beat. Decent beer selection at reasonable prices. The service can get pretty slow if they are busy, at one visit it took over an hour and a half to get our food which was dissapointing, but most of the time the service is prompt and good. The regular bartender is a SUPER cool and very chill dude. Most of the waitresses are really nice too.

Google
Very conveniently, it's steps from the red line. Liked the staff the best, friendly and helpful. There seemed to be one server for the whole place, but she was as attentive as she could be. Good drink selection. I'm not sure what was on tap, I didn't see it on the menu, but there were a lot of nice bottled beers. Decent drink deals ($5 cocktails on Tuesdays). Steak taco was good, pretty tender, not fatty, real steak. I've heard good things about the kale and grit taco, so I'll try that next time. Their mule tasted like booze (vodka and whiskey), and I didn't taste any ginger, although they say they use Cock & Bull ginger beer. Alberto's pizza is a block down the street, so that's a nice option, too.

Google
Awesome tacos. Got a sweet potato taco which was very tasty & had an awesome sauce. Also had the fried chicken taco which was good as well. Their salsa has a kick to it and they give you a lot but it is an additional $4- for chips and salsa. Great atmosphere. Cash only up to $20-, over $20- you can use a credit card.

Google
Great specials... The burger is to die for and they have pretty good tacos with very unique flavor combos. Nice dark atmosphere great playlist. The drinks are also awesome but don't ask them to make a cocktail that's not on the menu... My request was denied. The Humboldt mule is my favorite!

Google
This place is a Humboldt Park gem! As my first check in in Humboldt Park, this area is impressing me already. They have great daily specials on drinks that are worth getting. $5 cocktails (including margaritas) on Fridays?! If I worked/lived closer, I would be guzzling a couple. The margaritas are strong and delicious - they actually make the sours in house every morning which is pretty impressive considering many places use an easy mix as their quick fix. They have a variety of tacos and other dishes, but sadly the portion sizes are small. I would suggest about 3-4 tacos per person. Best deal at this establishment: $6 for a tall boy, shot, and taco. Sign me up!

Claudia Herrera

Google
Excellent food and really unique taco selection. They have homemade tortillas, which only boots their already great taco offerings. If you want to wet your whistle, the 6 dollar meal goes down smooth. It involves a beer, a shot, and a taco, accounting for about 75% of life's necessities in one fell swoop. They also do have vegetarian options, but remember to bring lots of cash, as they don't take cards!

Yelp
My friend and I stumbled upon this place after a Halloween party and we are so glad we did. I loved the local bar scene and the super friendly owner. I got the mole taco and it was amazing. My friend got a skinny margarita that was also good. I went back with my husband who is gluten free and he enjoyed the tacos as well. The guac was good too. He didn't like his mango margarita much but I had a couple sips and enjoyed it! I will be back!

Yelp
Aztec Dave's As charmed as we are, here in Chicago, with absurdly delicious foods and crafted cocktails; we are over-indulgent in decadent "options" and in the boricua of Humboldt Park is one of the best cantina- restaurante's in this metropolis. Dave and his gracious Banda of chefs and mixologists provide a ballet of passionate service; rooted in the primo latino art of hospitality. It is thier sincere treat and our favorite local retreat! Salud! p.s. We also dig Dave's Eco- responsibly-compostable take out containers. Nice! J.T.

Yelp
Modern, cool, family run Mexican bar that serves AMAZING, authentic food!! Loved the mole de pollo so much, got it in 2 tacos and a burrito. Also tried a beer battered cod taco (yummy & fried fresh!), & an al pastor taco. The ceviche & chips are a nice starter! Everything is SO GOOD! AND THE DRINKS ARE ALSO BEST BANG FOR YOUR BUCK. The pepino cucumber margarita is the owner's favorite (& mine as well)! Great taste & strong tequila! The owner and servers are incredibly nice and I appreciated the attentive service. Had a great, fun time. There was so much I wanted to try, I could not physically eat and drink it all--MUST come back!!

Yelp
We sat outside at first. Then after a minute, my friend suggested we go inside to eat. I didn't want to go inside, but I could see he was a little cold, so we ended up going inside and eating at the bar. I don't like eating inside restaurants, it's too loud. If indoor eating was like tennis matches, and all the waiters acted like tennis umpires and insisted on a quiet environment, I'd be such a good indoor eater. If there was no music, no tv, and conversations needed to be kept at a certain decibel level, I'd thrive indoors. I'd be able to focus on the conversation between my friend and I without getting distracted from all the other noises, but that's not how restaurants work. I'm not a good indoor human. Anyway, my veggie burrito was good and this place gave me good practice on adjusting to the noisy indoors.

Yelp
Wow! We've only dined in once and order delivery once, both both occasions were wonderful. The drinks and food are reasonably priced, amazing quality and spices. I saw a happy hour sign when we dined in, so I hope to make it in soon!

Insia Z.

Yelp
Better birria tacos (really hit the spot!) than I expected and a very extensive drink menu. Pretty solid and friendly, comfy vibes.

Yelp
Great service if you get Eric or Kevin. Both are great bartenders and just make the experience great. Food is amazing never had a bad meal here

Emily R.

Yelp
Best pollo/mole burrito I've ever had!! Food overall was delicious and drinks as well! Service was great, everyone was so nice. 10/10 worth every penny

Antoine W.

Yelp
Come for the authentic menu, it being a local neighborhood spot with friendly service, and the high Yelp reviews. But, you'll keep coming back for the Vegetarian Torta! Everything is made fresh. You can taste the pride for their food with each bite you take. But, the Vegetarian Torta is the star of this menu: Even my "must always have meat" friends are impressed with it every time I introduce them to it! This place has been in my rotation and I visit it at once a month. Or, and did I mention how much I love the Vegetarian Torta?!?!

Ben S.

Yelp
High quality innovative yet traditional street food Mexican. Great tacos and tortas, amazing salsas. That pineapple sauce is so good. Delicious horchata.

Laurel Z.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem! The food was so yummy I didn't get a chance to capture a photo before eating but on my second visit, I remembered. The food is so good and the staff are super friendly! I love their quesadillas because they are smaller and perfect for if you want to try a few different ones or just want something small by itself or to pair with one of their delicious tacos. The shrimp taco is so good! Also, they have tv's so if you want to catch a game while you eat amazing food, this is a great spot to consider. I love the decor of the place as well. This is one of my new favorite spots in the neighborhood.

Alex C.

Yelp
Update: came back after a not so pleasant experience. Service was attentive and friendly. Food was amazing (tacos pollo en mole). They had my beer: a little sumpin' sumpin'. Nice!

Paige D.

Yelp
Yes! Aztec Dave's gets it. Food is fantastic, margs are delicious, and service is great. Chill ambiance inside, would also love to order from one of their food trucks. Everything was deliciously flavorful and really does come out as pictured.

Steve A.

Yelp
Got to check out this former food truck that's now a restaurant in an actual building. It's a good thing for them. Aztec Dave's has a location that makes sense, in an area with a Hispanic and Latino population to bring in. Located close to Humboldt Park. The menu has both meaty and vegetarian kinds of options. Has pretty good prices. It's $6 for Modelo on tap. That's the cheapest beer, plus you of course can get margaritas and whatever. As for the food, big portions help. It's $15 for the Taco Dinner, a big platter of stuff. Choose your protein, and it comes with beans and rice. We each got the beans for the protein, and the tacos were filled and spicy. Better than expected. It's doing good after becoming a permanent location. The atmosphere is fun yet relaxed and the menu has stuff for meat eaters plus vegetarians.

Patti O.

Yelp
Was pleasantly surprised in this place after stopping in for an impromptu lunch Saturday about 2pm. Decent drink selection and the food was outstanding! The torta was huge- 2 of us split it and it was filling! The birria were juicy, and the rice and beans tasted so authentic. I really was not expecting the food to be this good, will definitely be back!

Justin B.

Yelp
Loved everything about the food at Aztec Dave's, including the queso fundido and the loaded nachos along with a handful of cocktails. The SERVICE, though friendly, was a bit slow for a space that was not very crowded on a Thursday night of a holiday week. Drink service was surprisingly slow given that we were doing margaritas for parts of the evening. Also (and this is not a fault of the restaurant necessarily) the space can get very loud given its small size if a loud party is seated near the edges of the space. The spectrum during our visit was interesting--at times, it was crazy loud, and at other times, it was relatively quiet, even with the din of TVs in the background and conversations at other tables taking place with small groups. I'll definitely be back for the food here; the flavor profile was excellent.

Ella W.

Yelp
We just got home from Dave's and absolutely loved it. The ambiance is upbeat and had a very locals feel to it. The staff were cheerful and super fun. We had the restaurant week menu and started with the soup and flautas, then made our way to birria and surf and turf, then had flan and a churro for dessert. Their margs are awesome! So excited we moved closer to them as I imagine it will be even more fun in the summer!

Ashly C.

Yelp
Stopped in late-late night and were welcomed in graciously. Awesome vibe, great service! Loved the Paloma with fresh fruit!

Krystina J.

Yelp
We stopped in for a light bite & some drinks, & I'm so glad we did! This place was just down the street from our Air B&B so we decided to give it a try. Our waitress was super nice & friendly. The pico was AMAZING. But the complimentary housemade salsas?! INCREDIBLE. We asked if we could buy some to take home with us (back to Louisville) but unfortunately they could not do that. We tried to make it back while we were in town but it didn't work out. However, we will definitely be back our next trip up to Chicago!

Mary T.

Yelp
We loved Bullhead Cantina and were sad to see it close. Damn I miss this kale & grits tacos. We're always looking to try new taco places and I stumbled on glowing reviews for Aztec Dave's so we gave it a shot. The space isn't huge, but by the time we'd finished there was a wait for a table. There are maybe 6-8 tables plus bar space. We started with margaritas and I got the taco dinner and husband a burrito dinner. I ordered a tilapia and a shrimp guajillo taco and a veggie taco. Husband got the asada burrito. My husband's second margarita was a spicy one, which he enjoyed. The tacos were good, but fell apart because they were stuffed. I generally don't like my tacos to fall apart, but if it's because they're teeming with fillings I can forgive that. We got two salsas for the table, a pineapple habanero and a salsa verde. I would've liked a simple spicy red option too. 4.5 stars, really solid food and we'd definitely return.

Yelp
Nice folks; clean accessible ladies room, Delicious food, Fair prices, highly recommend!

Morgan C.

Yelp
Overall, pleased. The burrito was really good and full of shrimp. I got "pineapple devil" sauce and . The guacamole was all right, but a little pricey, especially for tortilla chips obviously from a bag and neither "homemade" nor "fresh fried." Food arrived hot and within the delivery window.

Kiko R.

Yelp
Food was simply amazing. Quesabirria was next level and so flavorful. Definitely try it with their secret acocado sauce. Consome was delicious!! Service was as amazing as the food. David was friendly and treated us right. Can't go wrong with the great food, fun ambiance, and friendly service.

Anuj S.

Yelp
I ordered delivery from Aztec Dave's, so I can't speak to the service or the ambiance. In terms of the delivery, it arrived a bit late and GrubHub took care of that. I ordered nachos, which is admittedly a difficult item to deliver. The nachos were fully assembled. Dry and wet ingredients alike, resulting in a soggy serving of nachos. The seasoned waffle fries were good, though. Last for my main, I had a veggie burrito. It was ok. I will add the portion sizes were all very large. I probably ate 2/3 of the burrito and 1/3 of the fries and 1/3 of the nachos. The fries air fried well the next day. I didn't really keep the rest. I definitely ordered too much and I was supposed to be helped by someone that backed out.

Jonathan M.

Yelp
Decent spot if your in West Town. I wouldn't say a kid friendly place, but that's okay. We brought our two little ones anyway and they were extremely accommodating. We started with drinks and queso (they gave complementary salsa). The chips are house made I believe bcuz they are THICK! I'm not a fan of the thick chips but the dips made up for it. That salsa is killer. Spicy and delicious. The margaritas aren't worth the price IMO. The tacos were pretty good. I can't say they were the best but not the worst. My wife's protein bowl took the cake. I'd recommend it if you come. My daughter's quesadilla was actually really good also. Like REALLY good. All in all, a solid spot for the area that's worth checking out.

Charlie E.

Yelp
This place is it! The food hit the spot especially after a long day. I had the asada burrito and birria taco. I thought the food was perfectly cooked and lots of flavor. Loved the beans and rice too. The owner is super friendly and made us feel welcome. Def a fave place in the neighborhood for me.

Jariah W.

Yelp
This restaurant and bar is like a hidden gem, great drinks and food are hard to find. Aztec is full of flavor and extremely generous. I ordered the steak torta (Bomb) and the steak tacos as well. Margaritas are fresh and one is all you need Overall, cool laidback spot; Victor was attentive and helpful! Thanks again!

Cecilia X.

Yelp
This place used to be a food truck in Pilsen so I was really excited to try their brick and mortar! Definitely not bad but there are so many good Mexican places in Chicago so I would say in comparison it's nothing special. The interior is a bit dark and the music they play is kind of loud. The server was also a bit hard to flag down to get our checks. The watermelon agua fresca was really good though!

Joneice B.

Yelp
Hanging out in Humboldt Park area off California and ran into this gem. First let me say that California has so many cute stores and places to eat. After brunching, plant shoping and vintage grabbing we needed a drink. The cashier at the plant store suggested Aztecs for a Mango Margarita. As I was approaching I saw they had a Pinneaple Cider on special. I love cider. So opted to grab this. The bartender, who ended up being David (owner), suggested the Hibiscus Margarita. It was a beauty and my friend enjoyed this Margarita which isn't on the menu. We didn't eat but boy did we want to. David lets us know that Aztec Daves focuses on authentic Mexican recipes and ingredients derived from his grandmother's recipe and adds a modern twist. I could tell everything is fresh here. David was squeezing limes for Margarita and grapefruits for Palomas. But for the rager of Friday night which was filled with Cadillac Margaritas...Definitely would of gotten that Hibiscus marg. Venue is clean, spacious and they even have DJ on Friday and Saturday nights. Will make it back to this spot. Tip: Daily Specials, PBJ $6 (shot of jameson and PBR) Came back for food next day: Asada Burrito super good and filling. Tacos: Cod, Shrimp and Asada also good. Husband said slighty hot. Enjoyed guac and chips. Will be back this spot is cool. We caught a movie at the bar and enjoyed meeting Dave (not the owner but the cool homie).

PrettyBabi M.

Yelp
I'm coming back lol had the torta and waffle fries. Fries were SEASONED AND FRESH CANT BEAT THAT. parking was easy and the ambiance was nice. They have like a pineapple or spicy mango salsa that was really good

Naomi L.

Yelp
I mean there is not one bad word I could ever utter about this place. I came in during my lunch hour and the owner happened to be the bartender at that time! He was the most pleasant and down to earth person and at first I was going to order my food to go but the VIBES made me stay and chat with him. I have seen his food truck around the city before and probably had it at some point but this little taco place is an absolute go to for me now! I ordered the Asada Tacos and BOYYYYYYY YESSSSS!!!! Everything was fresh and the meat was seasoned to perfection! In addition to that his bartending skills are top tier! The Marg he made me was so well balanced, LOL, I wanted to get drunk during lunch!!! If you are thinking about grabbing tacos make sure you check them out! This place will not disappoint! Thank you again and i'll probably be back today for lunch!

C P.

Yelp
Do you like strong, reasonably priced drinks? Food so cheap it feels like a food truck? An atmosphere where you can sit at the bar and make up a drinking game with locals? A friendly owner who makes you feel welcome and makes women feel safe? A place you can get your kids food? THIS IS IT. I'm fully obsessed with this place. The food is wildly good- honestly, it's criminal- and you can get drunk alone as a woman and know you'll be fine. A bowl of incredible pozole is like $7. Is food that cheap even a thing anymore? It is here! The owner hangs out here a lot and he's a really good man. He talks about his wife a lot, which we love! And he makes sure you're fed, watered, and able to get yourself home safely. This is your neighborhood spot, your pregame spot, your family dinner spot... it's everything.

Joy E.

Yelp
Good guacamole, their sandwich is really big too. It's not big though, the size of the place wasn't as I expected but other than that, food was great, service was great, ambiance was so and so.

Fallon B.

Yelp
Went here on a evening of shopping and was in the mood for some margaritas and nachos and decided to come here! My sister loves this place so we decided to give it a try since this was my first time! Love the cozy vibes of this place definitely a neighborhood local spot which I loved. The waiter was very nice and attentive upon being able to pick where we wanted to sit! I decided on the chicken nachos and a mango margarita on the rocks! I got a mango margarita; but wanted sugar on the rim of my cup and was given the chili salt (could be the wrong reference) but my waiter was soo nice and got me another one with the correct preferred flavor which was good! The drink was refreshing BUT omg the nachos was huge!! They put everything one these nachos - avocado, beans, cheese, sour cream and all!! Although, I had a big appetite - I definitely couldn't eat it all! You could share for sure! But was able to get a to go container for later! It's not too expensive either. Their prices are reasonable - I got just one drink and the nachos and think with taxes I spent about $26 in total! Overall, loved the atmosphere and the chill vibes! I would definitely come back and order something else as they have a great selection of dishes on their menu!

Kareen T.

Yelp
Portions are great. The food is great. Service is quick and they are friendly. Ambiance is laid back with a Mexican feel.

Mike L.

Yelp
Great spot in Humboldt Park for legit Mexican food. The burrito and torta were both excellent, will be back!!

Nato P.

Yelp
The best Mexican food in Chicago! Real authentic high quality food! My go-to are the loaded fries, fish and shrimp tacos or a steak burrito. David and his wife are very friendly people and great staff. Also a lot of great artwork on the walls. MUST TRY!!!!!!!

Brian N.

Yelp
Best burrito I've ever been served. What a cool vibe with great food. Everyone should visit Aztec Dave's Cantina. Our party of eight was served delicious food, great drinks and attentive service. Check it out!

Deanna G.

Yelp
Hubby and I have been meaning to check out this new neighborhood spot. We started with the Guacamole as well as Chorizo Fundido. Both were good and large helpings. I do wish they offered spice levels on guac, but we didn't even ask. Hubby got the steak torta and loved it. I got the mole taco as well as blackened shrimp and both were very flavorful and very full of meat. We were both STUFFED and didn't even finish our apps nor get dinners (rice and beans). Very generous portions and very good. May need to bring friends next time to finish those appetizers!!! Per hubby - best queso he's ever had!

Haley S.

Yelp
Ok. I'm not from Chicago and my boyfriend and I stumbled upon this beautiful place on a night out. Victor was the energy we needed. Not only attentive and kind but went out of their way to just be a really ducking nice dude. Thank you Victor. We will never forget you. :3

Amanda ..

Yelp
Dave and his team SAVED my weddings welcome party!! When our other caterer got the date wrong I walked over from the bar we were hosting the event at and asked if they could make 300 tacos! They didn't hesitate and got right on it, Dave the owner was so kind and helpful and truly helped to make sure our guests were fed and happy. Thank you all again so much!

Jeannie L.

Yelp
Ordered carry out on a Saturday night via Grubhub. We ordered steak nachos, 2 chicken tacos and elotes. There was no veggies on the tacos, just chicken. There was no cheese, onions or any peppers on the over cooked deep fried nachos just steak, sour cream, cilantro. The elotes was very salty with over cooked chewy corn. The order didn't have any extra sauce, napkins or utensils. I miss Bullhead Cantina... The staff did seem friendly and there were people there drinking so maybe this is more of a drinking bar than a food bar. I doubt we will try the food again but maybe we will walk in for a drink one day instead.

Vanessa M.

Yelp
I had not written a review like this but I had to share as this was the worst service I've ever had....We waited for nearly 40 mins for our tacos to arrive, yes it took that long for tacos. And our server (pink hair that later said she was the manager) never came around to check-in or have the courtesy to let us know that it would take that long. So disappointing too because we've come to Dave's on many occasions and will never return because of this experience. There are so many Mexican restaurants in Chicago with great food and service and this is no longer one of them.

Sam W.

Yelp
Unfortunately our takeout order was missing two items, but other than that the food was good

Jenifer M.

Yelp
This place is WONDERFUL! Yulie and her husband are serving up fabulous cocktails and food that is made from scratch! Their margaritas were fresh and delicious made from fresh fruit purées, none of that artificial, sugary stuff. Their salsas were spicy yet filled with flavor so I couldn't stop eating them! The elote was so tasty, their chicken and pork tacos were crazy yummy but whatever you do, do not pass up trying the beer battered cod taco, that was a divine experience from the taco shell, to the homemade pico de gallo but that fish was so tender, not greasy, just FANTASTIC! Yulie was so friendly and just made our evening one to remember and one to re-do! We'll be back Thank YOU‼

Kate S.

Yelp
Excellent service, fun ambience, incredibly tasty food! I came with a group of friends and everyone really enjoyed their food. The taco platter is a great deal, and there are a ton of taco varieties to choose from. I also appreciated their creative cocktail menu. The queso dip was delightful, highly recommend. Worth a stop!

Eric S.

Yelp
The folks here make excellent food and provide amiable service for more than reasonable prices. The steak quesadillas are a perfected art.

Francisco A.

Yelp
Aztec Dave's Cantina is a great place to go for a drink or a quick bite to eat! They have many TVs playing various sports within the establishment which guarantees you a great view no matter where you are sitting. Their food options are delicious, with my favorite being the loaded nachos. Pair that with a strawberry margarita and you're bound to have a good time! The staff was also wonderful. From the busboys to the bartenders, everyone there is very welcoming which gives Aztec Dave's Cantina a great vibe. There was one bartender did stand out to me due to their attentiveness and customer service. Jorge provided my party and I with great service. This young man is hard working and is an outstanding team member of this restaurant. I will definitely be coming back again!

Kayleigh S.

Yelp
I went to Aztec Dave's for the first time on Friday evening and it was great. Wonderful atmosphere and friendly staff. As a vegetarian, I got the vegetarian burrito and it was a delicious, grilled burrito. My boyfriend got vegetarian burrito with no cheese or sour cream as to make it vegan, however it still arrived with sour cream so I ended up eating that as well and he had to get something else. Still delicious, but it's recommended to confirm with staff about food preferences or dietary needs to ensure follow through. 4/5 stars due to vegan mess up, but the food was so good and staff was so friendly I would definitely return!
