I've visited Bullpen Bar & Grill on multiple occasions and I was surprised that I had not reviewed the joint before last night's visit. A bunch of close friends and I visited Bullpen to watch an Aztecs game years back where I thought their dessert was yummy and our customer service from our waitress was really good. For this visit, we invited our niece's husband, who was visiting from Australia, to join us because he too was an Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) fan like my brother-in-law, nephew, and myself. This was the first time we were catching a UFC pay-per-view event at Bullpen Bar & Grill. After our enjoyable UFC experience, this won't be our last time getting our UFC on.
Bullpen is located off of Clairemont Mesa Blvd heading west off of the 163 or east off of the 805 freeways. The sports bar is located in an outdoor strip mall where Daiso, Turner Outdoorsman, Menya Ultra, and Cheetah's are located. There are plenty of parking spots in this strip mall, but it can get crowded due to the popular eateries and shops in this center. For this UFC event here at Bullpen, there was a $10 cover charge. As I was about to walk inside the restaurant, this tatted, athletic, and Caucasian bouncer blocked me from entering by touching me saying that there was a cover. Note to management, you probably should remind this bouncer that he shouldn't be putting hands on people because some patrons might not take too kindly to his actions. After paying the cover, I entered Bullpen and sat down at a table where I had the best view of the UFC fight that was going on and could clearly hear the sound. There is plenty of seating and there are an avalanche of televisions where you can watch UFC and a bunch of other sports. Our waitress, who was also from Australia, provided quality customer service and was friendly. I didn't think she checked on us as much as I would have liked.
One thing that I've really enjoyed about Bullpen's menu is their diverse food offering. It's got an array of food for any type of diet. Prior to bringing my niece's husband to Bullpen, our entire family had spent lunchtime with our niece and her family, so we were still stuffed from lunch. If I wasn't so full, there were a great assortment of appetizers to choose from, entrées, steak and ribs, desserts, sandwiches, specialty burgers, salads, soups, eggs all day, pizza, and a kids menu. After waiting for a few hours to digest my lunch, I settled on ordering the Mushroom Bacon Swiss burger, which is a 1/2 lb 100% ground beef patty served with lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo, and topped with swiss cheese, sautéed mushrooms, and bacon. This burger comes with your choice of either french fries, cole slaw, white rice, or brown rice. Bullpen is generous with its food portions. The burger was hearty, the toppings were bountiful, and this burger was tasty. The seasoned fries were cooked perfectly to a golden brown and they too were yummy. That was an enjoyable meal as I enjoyed some fisticuffs.
Our first experience enjoying a UFC event at Bullpen was a fun time. For UFC fans like my family and I, this was a great restaurant to watch the UFC and we've watched UFC events at several local sports bars. My brother-in-law said that out of the four sports bars we've watched UFC events, Bullpen was the best one and had the best food choices. It just needs to tell the bouncer not to be on a power trip.
