"The burgers at Bun & Sum in Hackney Central are worth travelling for and are some of the best in London. Smashpatties are stuffed between soft buns, topped with brisket, pastrami, or a slice of american cheese. Persevere for a stool—these excellent burgers are best enjoyed freshly smashed and sizzled, while nodding along to the bumping hip-hop/R&B playlist. If you want it to takeaway, their original Mile End location is better." - rianne shlebak
"If you’re into burgers, chances are you’re familiar with California-based In-N-Out and its thin patties and not-so-secret menu. And chances are you wish you could try one of their burgers without jumping on an 11-hour flight to LAX. Thanks to Bun & Sum, a takeaway burger spot, you can have the next best thing in Mile End. The crispy, juicy smashpatties are stuffed between soft buns, and topped with brisket, pastrami, or a straightforward slice of american cheese. There’s also a sit-down location in Hackney, and outposts in Camden and Whitechapel." - jake missing, rianne shlebak, sinead cranna
"Ronald McDonald would approve of Bun & Sum’s smashburger take on the Big Mac. The pickles are thick and ridged, the cheese is perfectly melted, the patty is thin, and the all-important sauce is creamy, tangy, and slightly sweet. The industrial-looking kitchen is tucked away under one of the railway arches near Mile End, with a few oak wine barrels that double as makeshift tables to stand around and eat excellent smashburgers in three satisfying bites. There’s also a sit-down location in Hackney, and outposts in Camden and Whitechapel." - rianne shlebak, sinead cranna
"The burgers from Bun & Sum’s original Mile End spot made it onto our Best Smashburgers guide. So if you’re craving something lacy-edged and meaty, you can’t go wrong here. It’s a small spot but persevere for a stool—these excellent halal burgers are best enjoyed freshly smashed and sizzled, while nodding along to the bumping hip-hop/R&B playlist. Add a portion of fall-off-the-bone sticky ribs and cheeseburger fries, too." - jake missing, sinead cranna, daisy meager
"Bun & Sum is a 10-minute walk from the lido, it’s opposite Hackney station, and it serves excellent halal smashburgers that just make sense for your self-care day. Get the Regular, with two patties, tangy pickles, cheese, and mustard. And add a portion of fall-off-the-bone sticky ribs and cheeseburger fries showered with small pieces of those crispy patty edges." - heidi lauth beasley, jake missing, sinead cranna
