The 20 Best Restaurants In Hackney

"The burgers from Bun & Sum’s original Mile End spot made it onto our Best Smashburgers guide. So if you’re craving something lacy-edged and meaty, you can’t go wrong here. You'll probably have quite a wait between ordering and your collection buzzer pinging. But persevere for a stool—these excellent halal burgers are best enjoyed freshly smashed and sizzled, while nodding along to the bumping hip-hop/R&B playlist. Add a portion of fall-off-the-bone sticky ribs and cheeseburger fries showered with small pieces of those crispy patty edges, and you’ll be glad you were patient." - jake missing, sinead cranna, daisy meager

I saw this place on social media and fort I must try this place what a disappointment. Thursday 15 October 2025,me and a friend went to this place, I can't believe how disappointing it was, milkshake rubbish Macdonald milkshake is better and 3 times cheaper. Smash burger, this was there worsest smashed burger iv ever had no tast greasy and not smash but killed burger, call it killed burger or rightoff burger. The fries were discussing, the beef ribs had no tast and no meat. The beef bricket with hash browns were discussing, no tast dried. It was like all the food was from ice land and microwave, sorry that's insulting to Iceland, Iceland in better and cheaper. I can't believe they have more branches. They can't cook, no atmosphere poor ingredients, poor service. I'm so upset that enyone who says this place is amazing is deluded and lives in a fantasy world. I'm so upset I spent 47 pounds, They can't even do the basics, If everyone thinks I'm taking rubbish I would challenge them. Especially your head chef and operation manager. Save your money do not eat in this place Rename your business Bun and sum Rubbish The International chef Who Saves YOU Money Olgun Hilmi

After hearing about this place and seeing vids on social media I decided to give it a try. I ordered a double smashed burger fries and a coke that came to £9.23p and this was apparently with 50% off Upon ordering I literally used the loo for 30 seconds and as I stepped out the staff who served me handed me a basket with my food. I was shocked at how quick the food had been prepared and it made me a little suspicious as no one can cook a burger that quick especially a smash burger. On first impressions the food didn’t even look fresh and the chips looked dry. I bit into the burger and was struggling to taste any meat! I’ve attached a photo I’ll let all of you be the judge. The best way to describe this burger… it was as if someone just laid beef crumbs onto the most soggy wet burger bun! An absolute joke!! I opened the bun and could only crumbs of meat and was struggling to see a double beef pate. Honestly this is the worst burger I’ve ever had in my life! Even a McDonald’s cheese burger beats this and I can’t believe I’m saying this lol. Please ignore what you see and hear about bun sum on social media as it’s very misleading and what you see on social media isn’t what you’re presented with in reality. Whilst I was in The restaurant another customer looked at me and agreed that what I was served was very poor. I demanded a refund and hopefully it will show up on my account soon. Please avoid this chain of restaurants and I invite who ever is reading this to read the other reviews which are similar to mine. Bun Sum you’re an absolute disgrace you haven’t the slightest idea about what a good burger is how are these restaurants even still open for business ? Lmao

Neo taste app bought me to this place. Booked a meal only to find out they don’t do the app - misleading customers. Anyhow we checked the QR code made it to the counter to order . We were not attended for almost 15 mins despite being the only paying customers and 3 delivery guys waiting for the food . We then further sat for 5 mins to order. To be honest customer service can be upgraded 💯

Great smash burger, fries were way to thin and oily. Order using app only. Quick service and half price burgers before 4pm, I think at their normal price it's too expensive for what it is. I've only tried the smash burgers.

After seeing the online hype, and the additional branches opening, thought I’d check it out for myself. Alhamdulillah the food was overall nice however, portions were way too small and I think the brisket from other places like Pitmaster for example is better. There was barely any rib meat on the ribs loaded fries we got, which did taste great, it’s prob the best tasting item they have on their menu. But the ribs ordered on their own are not as tender as they should be if they’ve been slow cooked for so long. B&S do cut their brisket very finely which is something I like and the gimmick of dipping a burger or food into their gravy broth is tasty and resolves any dry food. The dessert was decent but again on the small side. The shakes were unavailable, something they need to sort out, especially in the summer weather. The branch was relatively quiet with enough seating, they maybe need one more member of staff to stay on top of promptly cleaning tables after customers leave because a few seats/tables weren’t cleaned for a while as limited staff served customers/managed collection drivers. I’d eat here again if I was in the area but wouldn’t go out of my way to visit again with so much other choice in London.

This place had been on my radar for a long time, and the social media hype has been crazy. Finally, I had the opportunity to visit their Hackney location and decided to try as much as I could. Here’s what I ordered: Motz Burger A solid burger that could have benefited from a bit more seasoning. Thankfully, the onions and smac sauce added enough flavour to make it enjoyable. Green Chilli Burger Like the Motz Burger, this one also lacked seasoning. However, the generous portion of green chillis was a perfect hit. The burgers were on the smaller side, but the 50% discount made them a good deal. I wouldn’t pay full price given their size. Shticky Ribs The ribs were tasty, with a honey BBQ sauce that was sweet, tangy, and perfectly glazed. The only downside was that there wasn't much meat on them. Animal Fries The fries were decent, and the combination of caramelised onions and smac sauce was excellent. However, I was confused by the slice of cheese on the fries when they sell queso cheese. Loaded Smashed Potatoes An outstanding combination of flavours with crispy potatoes. I would prefer if they came in a wider container to ensure the toppings are spread more evenly. After finishing the top layers, you’re left with plain chips. They offer unique drink options and an extensive menu. However, I found the prices a bit high for what you receive. On the bright side, the staff were friendly and quick to clear the tables after customers left. I’d definitely return to try other items on the menu, possibly at a different location.

Don't order from here, beef ribs covered in cheap bbq sauce completely ruins the meat they need to find another sauce. The smash burgers are so thin that they are crunchy and they had me saying even McDonalds burgers are better which feels so wrong but its true, you get literally “bun and sum” because there is much more bread than burger patty.

Honestly - just visit! Been meaning to get to this spot and the food, worth it! My favourited being the brisket burger, the brisket itself flavourful and cooked to perfection! Genuinely melt in your mouth slow cooked brisket, the ribs the same and so is the pastrami Take their recommendations, the staff are brilliant and super helpful Overall worth of a 5+ star review and will be recommending family, friends and anyone who asks for a brilliant food spot in London Please mind the shop isnt the biggest but people are in and out (service is brisk) so you’ll get a seat in no time! No excuses not to pop down ❤️
