Yelp
I came here for a late Bun Bo Hue (Hue-style Beef Noodle Soup) lunch from looking at all the positive Yelp reviews. My initial impressions were not very optimistic, as the eatery was located in an unassuming Little Saigon strip mall, across from the ARVN memorial monument. Additionally, the signage for this place did not stand out, and I had to recheck Yelp to make sure it was still in business! In the end, I did locate the place and decided to go inside. Again, my initial impressions were not positive, as Bun Bo Hue Duc Chuong was clearly a hole-in-the-wall establishment, with a few generic looking chairs, some really flimsy looking tables, and a large bench running through an entire wall. Looking up, I can see the ceiling fans need a good cleaning.
I was quickly seated by the hostess, and she asked me what size I wanted--apparently there are no menus and everyone coming in is presumed to be ordering the Bun Bo Hue, which is the only item served. There is a choice of beverages, however, with posters on another wall listing the flavors of boba teas available. I opted for a large bowl of Bun Bo Hue and tap water.
The service was sufficient--my hostess quickly brought out the utensils, food, garnishes, and water--and she asked me periodically if I needed more water.
The Bun Bo Hue portion was generous. In the large bowl, there is a good amount of cha (which is like a chicken bologna), brisket, blood cubes, and a pork hock. Additionally, the noodles and broth were fragrant and excellent, even though I would prefer it to be a little spicier. Fortunately, there is a diversity of condiments at each table to suit each patron's individual taste preferences.
The prices are very reasonable for the portion served!
Overall, Bun Bo Hue Duc Chuong is nice a hidden gem in Houston's Little Saigon that serves authentic cuisine, and I will certainly return to satisfy my cravings for Bun Bo Hue!
