Bun House Disco - Review - Shoreditch - London - The Infatuation

"A disco ball in a dining room is a very good thing. Especially if that dining room is also filled with chrysanthemum martinis and tables laden with wontons. Bun House’s second Cantonese spot is in Shoreditch and it’s supposed to feel like a Hong Kong nightclub from the ‘80s. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Team Infatuation

This is my second time to visit. There is a very good vibe of Asian Disco music and great food and drink quality. I’ve ordered the Earl Grey Bubble Milk Tea which is a fresh combination between English and Taiwanese. the Chargrilled Chilli Scallop, which is so complex on the taste, mix with chilli maple butter, crispy chicken skin and Vermicelli, reminds me back to my memory of Hong Kong restaurant Food and Vietnamese food. Another twist on Kaya French Toast with Jasmine Clotted Cream, reminds me back to Singapore street food. Just a little bit disappointed on one mistake that they missed out my ticket to make this French toast, finally I need to wait 20 mins and I asked one staff, he asked me to wait, then I waited until 40 mins to ask the manager again. He told the kitchen lost my ticket…which I feel ridiculously to wait without update from any of them. I understand they have busy orders but it doesn’t mean to miss communications. Finally turn out the manager apologise to me and offer me a free cocktail of cucumber & green apple sour and exclude the charge of the toast from my bill. This compensation makes more making sense to me as a long waiting customer. Overall, I hope they could do better management next time. I would love to visit them again. (P.S. one more touching thing from the bartender, Emma, she is good observation and actively showed me what the name of the song is when I feel curious to search from my Shazam app about the song they were playing. Also she is friendly to tell me her idea of making the fresh and creative cocktail 😌 it doesn’t feel alcoholic which I appreciate that)

Food is pretty decent but quite toned down. I do enjoy how Bun House has made nostalgic dishes and vibes accessible. The decoration is and serving ware is on point. Cucumber salad took forever to come despite knowing how easy it is to prepare. Service was very slow and staff didn't seem to know the menu too well. Quite pricey for small portions. Bun is nice and fluffy with a hint of sweetness but the vegetarian filling is better in the pre frozen buns you can get in supermarkets. The matcha desserts just had loads of matcha powder sprinkled on top rather than baked into the batter.

Service and atmosphere were excellent. Having been to the Bun House in Soho (which I loved), I was excited to try this location, and the menu here certainly impressed me with its wide variety of dishes. As someone who grew up in Hong Kong, I can confirm that the food is authentic, though a bit on the salty side. It seems they may have adjusted the flavors to cater to a broader audience — Chinese food in the West often leans toward stronger, saltier tastes. I’d enjoy it even more if the seasoning were lighter. Overall, though, it was a great experience.

loved the vibes here (80s cantopop, an actual disco ball, wong kar wai movie posters)! the food was really good too — the chicken and lamb baos are a must try, and the custard bao and kaya french toast desserts are both very well done, especially the latter. but the highlight for us was definitely the crispy gwai mei aubergine with tangy sesame butter, which had the perfect texture and the most addictive sauce!

First it's not authentic at all, the food is literally either too salty and too sweet, the sauce looks like shit. Most importantly the price doesn't worth it at all, the portion is literally SO SMALL and even French people is more generous than that. Strongly not recommend you to have food here as an authentic Hong Kong people, and I almost cried after eating this and go to hook right away!!!

The branding and decor of the restaurant is 10/10! We loved the vibe and felt the setting definitely transported us to another time and place. I didn't find the food to be anything particularly special and prices were expensive for what you were getting. The mushroom was mostly batter with a slither of mushroom somewhere in the fried batter which tasted fine but again, expensive for what it was. Wings were a nice size, and left whole which I appreciated, flavour was good. Fries started crunchy but the crunch didnt stay as they cooled down... We picked the Butter Soy Bacon Lo Mein which was interesting but I wouldn't get it again. Might try the restaurant again one day but not in a rush. I really wanted to love the food because the branding is so good but it didn't leave much of an impression on me.

Great location and vibe inside - the music was great, enjoyed Hong Kong tea, the calamari was 10/10, the prawn toast was the hottest but not the tastiest dish dish; the prawn won ton soup was delicious, but the temperature of everything else was JUST WARM. Buns weren’t hot, they said it’s not served like that :/ and unfortunately the beef ragu noodle which was delicious but I can imagine if not shared, gets sickly, was served warm. We flagged this and it was comped by the restaurant for which we were grateful. Nevertheless, this is my honest review and I’m not sure I’d visit again as the temperature of the food concerns were unfortunate.

The beef tongue was unbelievably tender, and the custard lava bun oozed with rich, creamy filling. Highly recommend the satay beef lo mein and the XO seafood fried rice—both full of flavor. Drinks like the pineapple ice were super refreshing too. Great spot to chill after a Brick Lane walk. Cool vibe, great food, and surprisingly affordable. Will definitely be back!
