The 13 Best Restaurants in Fairbanks, Alaska | Eater

"College Corner, as the west end of College Road near the University of Alaska is informally known, boasts several seasonal and food truck eateries crammed into just a few hundred yards. First among them is Bun on the Run. The operation has been around more or less forever (or since the late ’80s, at least), slinging mind-blowing cookies, scones, cinnamon buns, and muffins. But it’s the deli sandwiches on their artisanal rolls that keep a loyal clientele coming back year after year. This trailer offers a half-dozen sandwich combos like roast beef and cheddar or avocado and cream cheese; you can build your own creation. Sit at one of the tables by the parking lot drinking a lemonade and contemplate just how wonderful life can be." - Kris Farmen

My second time here and I really love the quality of the food, the drinks, and the atmosphere. I love the art/decore and will be excited to see hopefully more to fill it up more. A nice reprieve from the popular modern esthetic- flowers and clouds and color. I love it. Keep up the hard work! I know this building must be difficult to keep something consistent so I hope this doesn't leave. I had missed Gullivers Books. Now- this is my new Thursday hang out for this semester. :)

Ordered their beef reuben and oatmeal and choco chip cookie. The reuben was delicious. Wish they were open until evening.

Friendly environment. Fast service. Sat by a window. Could've sat outside on a patio. I liked being able to put my dirty dishes into a bin, even though I probably didn't have to and It was just me being me.

Their baked goods are amazing, their cinnamon rolls are the stars for a reason. They have diving duck coffee which is delicious. They have wonderful sandwiches, you choose from a selection of meats, cheeses and vegetables and they go on rolls that they bake as well. Definitely a long time summer favorite that is absolutely a necessary stop.

So good! Had the Moody Blue sandwich and chocolate zucchini cake. You can tell they use fresh ingredients and that the bread is homemade. Absolutely delicious and worth the wait!

Yelp
Bun on the Run is a small little trailer (with oven) that sells baked goods, sandwiches, coffee/ tea. You can find this little small business in the Beaver Sports parking lot, from May through September. My husband, our little girl dog and I decided to check this place out (there is outdoor seating with some umbrellas available) this past Monday afternoon, around 1:30 pm. There was only one party of 2 people ahead of us in line. After we got to the window to order, we ended up purchasing: Cinnamon Roll (without raisins), $5- You can get your cinnamon roll with raisins if you wish (at no additional charge) but we opted out of raisins since we were planning on sharing with our little girl and raisins are no no for dogs. Both my husband and I were disappointed with this cinnamon roll. It tasted stale and did not seem to have been baked that morning. Later on, when we were at our rental, we heated it up. It tasted a little better but still tasted like it was at least a day old. Basil Parmesan Scone, $4.50- This scone was hard and crunchy. As we suspected that the cinnamon roll we had was not baked fresh, we figured this was the same deal. But I did like the taste of the scone, even if it tasted like it was baked at least a day ago. ------------------------ (Total= $9.50) Service was very friendly and wait time for our items was very quick. Sad to say, we were not happy with our purchase and wouldn't come back.

Yelp
Supremely good vibes and one of the best sandwiches I've had in my life! Freshly baked bread & a fun and flexible offering of fillings. Veg options and a really nice outdoor space to eat or wait for your food. We arrived an hour before closing and they were sold out of some baked goods - come early to secure a bun! Would absolutely return if I found myself back in Fairbanks!

Yelp
Great buns for on the run or sitting in the sun. The crew was friendly and warm. The food and coffee was delicious.

Yelp
It's hard for me to review Bun on the Run because they were out of their cinnamon rolls at 10am so I can't speak to whether or not they live up to the hype. The cheddar jalapeno roll I chose as an alternate was also sold out. They helpfully have a plate at the ordering area with samples of all of the baked goods so I picked what looked intriguing, which was a mandarin sour cream muffin. I generally don't like orange anything, but I tried it it because it was different and I am a sucker for anything different. The muffin had fantastic texture. The orange flavor was not strong, which was good for me, but might not be for others. The toddler I had with me, who normally eats anything declined to eat any. I also picked up a bag of multi-grain buns in a ziploc bag. The man in line behind me said they are great toasted. I will reserve judgment until they are toasted because a bite as-is was a bit dense and stale. The toddler, however, happily chewed on a hunk of it for a long time. This served a valuable purpose because I didn't think the little one actually needed food at this point, but it kept him happy and busy. I also got a monster cookie, which is a giant oatmeal cookie with oats, peanuts, M&Ms, peanut M&Ms, raisins, and probably other things. It was pretty good. It held up well for nibbling from throughout the day and I felt like I was getting some nutrition along with my cookie. Why Bun on the Run is getting 4 stars from me is that I liked their set up. They have quite a few outdoor tables, some with chairs, but many with logs with little covers. It was a nice place to sit outside and have a breakfast snack. The little one could then explore afterwards, and made friends, and had so much fun climbing up and down the little platform by the ordering window. The little one's new friends pointed out that there is a park across the street as well. The outdoor dining served us well as a break between rounds of bush shopping.

Yelp
I remember this place from our time here in the late 90s. Their scones were so good, I couldn't wait to have one again. I was happy to see they had expanded to a bigger trailer, thinking it meant they were doing really well. Unfortunately, when places get bigger, they tend to lose something in their growth. Bun on the Run lost the care and love that used to go into their food. The scone I had was NOTHING like I remembered. It was like comparing a beautiful light feather to a dry heavy brick, it was TERRIBLE. Their chocolate chip cookies were just okay. We also ordered hot chocolate. They were nothing more than instant mix barely stirred into warm water. We dumped everything out, what a waste of money.

Yelp
This place is delicious. Hands down the best sandwiches in town. When the bun opens in Fairbanks, you know it's the beginning summer. The fact they have operated out of the SAME trailer for over 30 years is impressive. The scones are remarkable, the cinnamon rolls melt in your mouth. Best summer lunch spot in Fairbanks hands down.

Yelp
The BOTRun trailer is amazing, the food is great, the employees are happy and friendly. When the Bun comes out you know summer has begun, it's been a staple of this community for 30 something years. People not only look forward to their food but the welcoming environment. If you haven't stopped by yet you should. People who ACTUALLY live in Fairbanks know this place is amazing. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Cinnamon bun was ok, not soft and gooey as I wished. Not worth $4 in my opinion. Maybe their sandwiches are better?

Yelp
The buns! These cinnamon buns are incredible, and very worth a visit. Delicious, not too sweet, and perfectly done bread. But don't sleep on the rest of their baled goods! We also enjoyed the savory scones. If you are looking for food for a road trip, worth noting that they start serving sandwiches after 10am.

Yelp
Buns are good fresh. Fresh ingredients. Lots of options. Love the vegetarian options. Deserts look good but have always been dry or old tasting with not much favor. Buns/bread is delish home made taste. I want to like this place so bad. But the staff is hit or miss. The wait can be atrocious. A better method for getting food out and ordering needs to happen. The current method does not work for anyone. Food is great the only reason this isn't in my regular rotation is due to poor layout, staff attitude and the deserts looking great but tasting blah. Last week after a long work shift I stopped by Bun on the Run to grab my standard turkey with provolone. I was given a bun with no turkey. I kindly let the staff know my order was missing the turkey...and she took the bun and gave me a weird look, she then asked her coworker if she put turkey on my bun to which the coworker replied "yes I just made that with turkey" the lady then looks back to me where I say "it didn't have turkey on it why would I make that up" I stand there thinking my order will be fixed easily with her slapping a piece of turkey on my bun.... but nope! She then looks at me and says "we will call you when it's ready" in shock I walked away from the ordering station and waited another 10 minutes as if my order had been thrown to the back where new incoming orders were paid for and placed. (I had already stood in line, paid and waited over 35min) finally I got my bun and was able to eat after a long night shift. The staff gave me a bad energy. The two visits before my deserts were beautiful but again staff attitude was moody and my deserts tasted old. I wonder how long they keep them out and I'd like fresh baked signs for new products vs day old stuff or few day old. I'm not sure if they were bland or just dry or both but something needs a tweek. After these last three visits I'm going to hang my bun up until I feel like giving them another try this summer.

Yelp
Friendly, quick service and easily customizable menu for many dietary restrictions! We go for lunch about once a week during the summer, especially on days when the special includes green goddess dressing! I don't know what they put in that dressing, but it's phenomenal.

Yelp
I love this place! Their food is always delicious and they have some creative menu items as well! Delicious!

Yelp
I've been here twice for the cinnamon rolls and now once for lunch. They rolls are to die for and then even put raisins in the rolls. Lunch was chicken salad sandwich on sourdough bread and it was just as good. Seating is outdoors in a parking lot, but I come here for the food, not the spell atmosphere.

Yelp
Look at Bun on the Run from the outside, I was a little leery of stopping. In fact, that's why I hadn't stopped until this point. I've seen the tussled camper parked next to Beaver Sports for a couple seasons now and always thought that they were just cinnamon buns but found out that they also have sandwiches so decided to give them a try. The idea is that a couple of bakers run the place so the prime focus is on sweets but they do offer deli meat sandwiches as well. They had pretty good traffic when we were there so they're pretty well known for lunch. I decided to try the Ham + Swiss on the sourdough and my partner got Turkey + Cheddar on the whole wheat. I was surprised to receive a very fresh looking, round sandwich wrapped in plastic wrap. I felt like I could ditch my job for the day and go on a hike - it was that kind of sandwich. But, I opted to pull up a chair under an umbrella and unwrap the treasure. The bread was divine. A bit of a crunch on the outside with a soft, chewy inside. Yum. It wasn't as sourdoughy as I'd like (more of a plain white bread) but still delicious. There was ample meat, fresh lettuce and tomato and slivers of red onion. I could've read a newspaper through the cheese so I was a bit disappointed at that. But overall, I loved the sandwich and would return, especially, if grabbing a sandwich to eat on the go (which kind of explains bun on the run). My partner's sandwich was good but she threw the last few bites away which told me she liked it but wasn't crazy about it. The wheat bread was covered with bits of grains and smothered in poppy seeds. She probably ended early because she'd also bought a cream cheese brownie. I took a bite of it and didn't like it. It was dry and the overpowering cocoa flavor punched at me with a kick of the sour cream cheese. She thought it was ok and decided to retreat back to the office with it. As stated, I would return but also wish that they had some sides with the sandwich such as chips or maybe a potato/pasta salad. If you're a sandwich only kind of person, you won't be disappointed. Service is very friendly too!

Yelp
Excellent food truck fare. The lunch option in Saturday is a veggie filled calzone that is absolutely delicious. Looking forward to exploring their weekday options.

Yelp
Locals favorite with delicious baked goods. The coffee isn't worth it's weight and, unfortunately, the new owners seem to be struggling to keep regular hours.

Yelp
For fresh baked goods first thing in the morning, sandwiches at lunch and sweet baked treats any time, you can't beat the trailer on College Road. It is how we know it is summer time in Fairbanks!

Mary H.

Yelp
Excellent sandwiches. The buns are fresh and homemade. Good service. Cookies are awesome!
