Bun’d Up Is Opening an Arlington Shop for Pillowy Steamed Bao With Korean Fillings | Eater DC

"Opening Thursday, December 5 at Pentagon Row (1201 S Joyce Street), Bun’d Up will bring its Taiwanese gua bao filled with Korean flavors across the Potomac, offering gua bao with miso-braised pork belly and pineapple kimchi, barbecued beef with gochujang, or sautéed mushrooms and fried shallots. Chef-owner Scott Chung plans to operate Thursday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., has secured a 1.5-year lease, and will use the full kitchen to expand the menu into Korean street foods like spicy rice cakes (tteokbokki), kimchi pancakes, various soups and stews, and possibly Korean tacos; a fryer will allow him to add Korean chicken and shrimp for buns and bowls. The shop will serve customers two ways—grab-and-go buns up front or a numbered system for more work-intensive dishes with food runners—and, while Chung doesn’t expect a full liquor license immediately, beer and wine service could be added later." - Gabe Hiatt

Food was cold My fries were hot I think if my food was actually served hot It would of taste better When I walked in the restaurant it was nobody in there not even a host. I went during lunch hours, so You order and pay on a kiosk.

Google
Not a single staff member came to assist us — there was absolutely no service at all. The food was awful. We ordered ribs, but 90% of it was just fat, barely any meat. It was truly inedible. We also had to wait for a very long time, with no explanation or apology. We deeply regret spending our money here. Would not recommend this place to anyone.

Google
Great food! They have a spot at Reston Farmers market, so I can't comment on their service or restaurant. But the options at the weekly market are definitely worth it. Pork belly is my favorite

Google
Stopped here for lunch because I had been craving bao buns, but left disappointed. The bathroom had a terrible smell (like a dirty mop), and the outdoor tables were dirty. At $5 each, I expected the buns to be tasty and well presented but they fell short. The buns were bland and small. I ordered the mushroom, fried tofu and fried shrimp buns. The mushroom was chewy and tough, the tofu bland, though the bang bang shrimp was the best out of the three. To top it off, the tater tots were either reheated or overcooked. Additionally, there is no counter service. I had a question about my drink and had to go nearly into the back kitchen to get someone's attention. I was so disappointed that I went to the Asian supermarket and bought bao buns to make at home next time.

Google
You order through a QR code and you can choose from different selection of meat in a bun or a bowl. Drinks are in cans. I got myself a bulgogi bowl with a bed of rice and side of Korean pickles and pickles onions. It was good, since I was craving something Korean bbq like. A lot of rice. They have a nice section with accesible of water and utensils towards the backend. Minimal contact with the employees. There is a also a ping pong table and outdoor seating. Place was kind of quiet for a Saturday evening.

Google
Hubby and I decided to go here after a recommendation. We’re got a few buns, tots, and the vegan dumplings as they were out of the pork dumplings. It was fairly quiet in the place considering they had the patio door open and a bunch of people and kids were outside. Everything was good just not boast worthy. And not worth the decent drive we took. But if we are in the neighborhood would definitely go again.

Google
I love bao. So while in the DMV area this past week, I was really excited to try this place. Because of the setup, "service" is virtually nonexistent. No one greets you when you walk in, and you're expected to know that you need to order on the kiosk that is conveniently situated in front of the register. Though, the ordering process is self guided (no opportunities to ask questions about the menu), you must track down an employee for a receipt after you've paid. As for the food, the buns alone are really good. However, as for the flavor of the contents of the 3 buns we tried, they were just okay. The fried shrimp bun was the best. The pork belly bun was decent. But the friend chicken bun was really bland and had no flavor. I ended up taking the chicken off and just eating the bun. Oh, let me know forget the "loaded" fries. I have no words...other than TERRIBLE (see photo). The shop is cutely decorated and situated right by the common area of the plaza. There was one other person at the restaurant while I was there on a Thursday evening; though the plaza was full of patrons. That should have been my sign. 😭 In all honesty, I more than likely won't eat here again when I return to the area.

Google
This place gives an extremely odd experience. Is it really even a restaurant or a front for something else? I got here and there was no one at the counter, no employees to be seen. I placed my order at the kiosk and the receipt printed right next to me- still not a person anywhere. I walked to the back dining room, the kitchen door was open… I called hello a few times- nothing…it took a few minutes but a person walked by the door with food, looked at me and just kept moving. This happened THREE MORE TIMES before a young girl came out. I asked if they had my order, and she said “yeah, it’s in the back” I explained I was just making sure bc there was no attendant, and she rolled her eyes and said “yeah, I’m cooking” It’s a strange ghost town of a restaurant.

Yelp
Taking advantage of DoorDash's 'Happy Hour', I went with the pick 3 buns (bulgogi, tofu, and pork belly), tater tots with miso ranch, and the crag rangoon. The tater tots were barely cooked and definitely not crispy (more steamed than anything, so much so that quite a bit of condensation had built up in the container). If there was any of the miso ranch, it must have evaporated in the container. The crag rangoon was missing from my order but was on the receipt (DoorDash was able to refund). The buns were pretty good. The pork belly was my favorite, with bulgogi taking 2nd and tofu coming in last. The pork belly was a nice balance of sweet and spicy, while the bulgogi had a bit too much sauce vs bulgogi meat (more tiny bits of meat). The tofu was pretty 'meh', it was a nice chunk of tofu but even the sauce didn't make it memorable. With the size of the buns, definitely take advantage of the 'happy hour' discount. If I ordered again, I'd probably just go for the pork belly.

Yelp
First time actually going to the Bun'd Up restaurant. It was practically empty but there's a self-ordering screen when you enter. I think they should at least have someone at the register. I placed my order during lunch and everything came out within 10 minutes so service speed is spot on. The cold cucumber appetizer is good but not worth the price. I would just get their buns. The pork bun was my favorite.

Yelp
This appears to be take-out focused. The seats are too uncomfortable to consider sitting in for more than a moment (while you wait for your take out order). The buns are tasty, but warning, they are VERY saucy and get really messy, really fast! They won't hold up at all well if you don't eat them immediately - the buns just become a soggy mess. You won't see a soul at the counter- just place your order from the kiosk and wait for that Aha moment when a rude human comes out with your order. Overall I give it a Meh.

Yelp
I don't really go to Pentagon Row but I'd say the food selection is interesting here. So I'm here with a group of friends and we see Bun'd up close by. We were surprised that it's actually two places in one; the front is for Bun'd Up and the other is for Noonchi which is another Korean Street Food/Bar area. I was so intrigued by both places that I decided to check out both places. This review is just purely for what I got from Bun'd Up. Walking in, there's merch and instant noodles and many open seats that are really colorful. I went here on a Tuesday night so I guess it was just really slow that night. There's a kiosk where you can order your food and after deciding on what I want, I decided to get the pick 2 bun option. I think it's like 2 for 10 bucks which wasn't bad but kind of pricy. I mean I'm in Arlington so everything will add up at some point... I picked the Braised Pork Belly Bun and the Spicy Fried Chicken Bun. The Braised Pork Belly Bun had pineapple kimchi, scallions, and cilantro lime mayo. Very interesting taste as I didn't really taste the kimchi at all but everything else did come to my taste buds. It was still good none less. The Spicy Fried Chicken Bun was good too. Gochujang glazed fried chicken with coleslaw and scallions makes for a very simple yet effective bun and I can't really complain. Both were delicious and it did keep me from getting hungry so it did it's job. Would I come back here? Maybe but I think Noonchi was the better pick out of the two. Either way with how you have to walk into Bun'd Up to get to Noonchi I actually have no choice. Check it out if you like a spin on Bao Buns!

Yelp
Overall, food was great but had an odd experience, likely due to how early I arrived. Read summary below: Came here on Friday around 11:15am and had an okay experience. Firstly, the restaurant opens at 11am, so I know I was a bit early. It was a very rainy morning and I was running some errands so I wanted to stop here and dine-in for an early lunch. Upon walking in it appeared there was somebody in the back kitchen but no other staff monitoring the front dining area. I went straight to the order counter and begin putting in my order into their kiosk, however, the screen kept freezing then would start at the beginning. I messed around on it for about 10 mins before somebody came out to help but I just ended up using a QR code once I realized they were on the countertops facing the side of the restaurant. As I was doing all of this to order, I realized how hot it was inside, almost as if the AC broke. It also looked as if they were doing renovations of some sort so right away I kind of figured I wouldn't be dining in. Got my order through and waited about 15 minutes. As I was waiting and starting to sweat I was getting attacked by a few mosquitos on my legs. I moved a few times then decided to just wait outside in the sprinkling rain so I could get fresh air and not get a bunch of bites. I felt the wait time was fine but there was just straight silence in the main dining room (no music, no TV sounds) so it felt pretty long and awkward. Once I got my food, I left. Ate when I got back home and was pretty satisfied. Wish I actually ordered more since they had a lot of great options. I'll likely come here again so hopefully I can dine-in in the future.

Yelp
People have doubts about this business and I can definitely understand why. There are servers, only a screen to order from, and it felt very cold (feels like no heater?) We didn't take photos but we got the 3 bun platter, good portions.

Yelp
A good place if you are looking for a quick bite and is fun with friends as you can get a variety to try. In a great spot if you want to enjoy an evening outside. Would go again if I was near the area

Simone S.

Yelp
DO NOT EAT HERE! I just got to DC and was looking for something quick to eat to hold me over until my dinner tonight. Wrong decision! I ordered the 3 bun special off of DoorDash. One mushroom, one beef bulgogi, and one fried chicken. The buns were old and dry, the chicken was old and hard as a rock and the mushroom bun had the most DISGUSTINGGGGG clump of hair in my bun. It was long that I thought it was a rat tail. I'm quite literally gaggin right now. I've never experienced anything like this before. This place is filthy and disgusting.

Yelp
Bun'd Up is in a cute little area with an open grassy area and lots of other restaurants. It was empty when we walked around 1:30pm on a Friday. No one really gave us direction on where/how to order despite seeing us walk in but I noticed a QR code on the table saying you could order. We sat in the patio so we could talk easier (the music was a tad loud inside). I had the 2 buns & fries special and a side of the Brussels sprouts. I wish I could have swapped the fries for the Brussel sprouts. The Brussels were good, but they have a ton so maybe split with someone. The buns were good too. I will say, this was very filling. I wasn't even hungry for dinner.

Yelp
This is a cute little spot located in a trendy food court. There is garage parking available within a reasonable walking distance and there are a few metered spots as well. The restaurant has a decent sized dining area with a bunch of tables and a very nice outdoor patio with seating as well. I saw a large area that looks like it could be used for banquets or private events located in the back of the restaurant. You will find a television in the restaurant that was playing some weird cartoon while I was there, and they also have neo-soul music playing throughout. The restaurant serves food that comes in gao bao buns. They also make them in the burger variety. They are kind of like tapas in a gao bao bun. It is very unique, and I am here for it. They also sell ice cream, some adult beverages, and have drinks in a cooler there. They guy working the counter was friendly enough, but I will admit, I only had limited interaction with him. Be sure to check out their daily specials. I ordered a spicy fried chicken and a spicy pork belly bun. It took about 7 minutes for them to prepare, and they were fresh, hot and delicious. I did not think that they would fill me up, but they did. They were very flavorful and tasty. I really enjoyed my meal here. I was not here very long, in and out. I highly recommend checking this place out. It seems like a neat place and has a unique/exotic menu full of very tasty items. I hope to make it back here soon.

Yelp
Location is convenient and around a bunch of other options. We went for lunch and they had their doors open for the summer day. It was a little odd that there was no one out front. But we ordered at the kiosk and our food came out. We got one of their lunch specials: 2 buns, French fries and a drink, and another 2 buns. Miso chicken, sweet soy fried chicken, pork belly, and tofu. Buns were soft and they were filled generously with some veggies. I think I could've used less of the sauce, since it made it a little messy and could've made it soggy if we didn't eat it right away. Our favorite was the sweet soy fried chicken. Tofu was second, since it was lightly friend. Their fries were also good, crispy and freshly fried. There were a lot of bigger tables to eat at. And inside was interesting, they sell other items and snacks on the side as well.

Fruit T.

Yelp
Really love their bao buns!! The Korean bulgogi are my favorite by far. I normally order a 2nd set of 3 bao buns to bring home and eat them the next day!! Delicious!!!

Yelp
I was with a tour group in Washington for school and me and one other person didn't get our food until one of the chaperones went into the kitchen and asked the were kind but we didn't get our food until we had to go and then we just had to eat in the bus
google avatar

Devoll

Yelp
The burger was covered in a nasty sauce and the cheese was like burnt on to the meat but the service was okay.
google avatar

Jacky C.

Yelp
Specializes in Gua Bao. Each one is $5, unless you order three, and you get $1 discount. I tried out their Bulgogi, Spicy Fried Chicken, and Fried Shrimp. They can be slightly messy as they're like a taco with sauce and other toppings on each one. I particularly liked the Bulgogi and Fried Shrimp the best. Pretty good spot to grab a quick snack.

Yelp
Bun'd Up is a pretty popular Asian fusion restaurant (also another location in Union Market) that I've been meaning to check out. If you like bao buns (done creatively) and rice bowls, maybe give Bun'd Up a try! A few of us stopped by for lunch on Christmas Eve for a quick meal. You can order food at the kiosk and it comes out pretty quickly. BUNS & FRIES COMBO - 13 This combo comes with two buns and a side of crinkle-cut fries. My friend and I weren't too hungry, so we decided to share it. I got a bulgogi bun which wasn't too bad. The bulgogi had a pretty sweet marinade and comes with some pickled cucumbers. Overall, it was OK, I'd get a different bun next time. The fries were pretty good, but inconsistent. There were some really crispy fries, some under-fried fries -- and then some had a lot of seasoning and some had none at all. My friend and I definitely raced to eat the best looking fries with more seasoning. At the end, we still killed the fries. Even the "bad" ones were passable. Pretty casual lunch/meal option. I don't think it was amazing, but I wouldn't be opposed to coming back if someone wanted buns.
google avatar

Kasi M.

Yelp
Let me preface with saying we ate at the pop up at the old town farmers market. So yummy. It was our first bun experience and it was so good. We got several breakfast sandwiches and for $12 they were so full. Hashbrowns, eggs, cheese and meat of choice! Highly recommend and I anticipate us hitting up the store front! No pictures because we scarfed it all down haha!
google avatar

Vinh N.

Yelp
Cute place in Pentagon Row. I think this used to be a Spanish or Italian restaurant before the pandemic. I came on a Monday evening where I was the only dine-in customer although I did see several pickup orders. Ordering is at the counter. Had the vegan dumplings and a mushroom bao. The food was not exceptional based on similar dishes at other restaurants. They have free play video games which is a plus.

Brian F.

Yelp
This place is the real deal. Great food. Great prices. Pineapple kimchi is really inventive and the fries are top notch. Highly recommend!

James M.

Yelp
They recently shrunk their portions and is no longer worth it, huge shame because they used to be a go-to for me. Still tastes good but for the price of a meal you get a snack, would no longer recommend. This is in reference to their grilled chicken bowl, and I'm sure they've done the same with their other bowls
google avatar

Joyce W.

Yelp
Bun'd Up is located in Pentagon city right next to Mimi's ice cream. No reservations needed. It's a pretty casual spot that gives off takeout vibes but there are plenty of seats inside. You order on toastab and they bring out the food. Utensils and water cups are in the back of the restaurant. We got the cucumber salad, bulgogi bowl, bao bun, and loaded tots (additional add on you want meat on top). They also have a happy hour menu with discounts on some shared bites. The food was good but the bulgogi was not as flavorful or spicy as I had hoped. I'd recommend it for a casual hang out (and you can get dessert afterwards right next door!)

J J.

Yelp
The best thing I had here today was the can of Diet Coke. How do you mess up rice? Dumplings were cold on the inside - assuming/hoping it was precooked so I don't get sick. Bulgogi was...I don't even know what that was. There is a touchscreen to order but they don't have much of what is on the menu.
google avatar

Ellie D.

Yelp
I love this place and the flavor of the buns. They're fun and delicious and I think it's worth a try if you're in the area. Just be prepared to need more food later because it won't fill you up. The down side: the chairs aren't friendly to anyone who has hips or isn't super skinny. But they sure are a cute aesthetic. $13 for three bao buns isn't bad, but they don't fill you up and I'd hope $13 dollars would go a little bit farther than as an appetizer. What we got: Soy fried chicken - 5* fat-freaking-tastic Spicy fried chicken - 4* nice flavor, the chicken was a bit tough Mushroom - 4* I do not like mushrooms so this rating/review comes from my partner. It was really yummy but mostly just mushroom. Pork belly - 3* nothing spectacular Bulgogi - 4.5* it's got a little kick to it and boy is it tasty!
google avatar

Yelp
Quick and delicious service! For an Americanized Asian fusion spot, they have some very cool options! The bao buns are unique and the buns are prepared very well. I've enjoyed everything I've gotten here and enjoyed fast service. Definitely my go-to for quick Asian Fusion!

Yelp
We came to eat at Sparrow room but ended up eating here after they didn't have the dim sum I was searching for. Unfortunately Bun'd up seemed to be having a rough night on this particular Friday. It was a pretty cold night in Arlington. It was also a very cold night in Bun'd up. It seems like they don't have working heat? That paired with the concrete floors and metal furniture... well you see where this is going. The restaurant it's self was in total disarray. Cords and wires hanging over top of things. Piles of supplies out on the restaurant floor. It just wasn't the type of place I'd want to spend anymore time than necessary. I wanted the fried pork dumplings and they were out. I settled on three bao buns instead. Ordering the braised pork belly, miso chicken and the bulgolgi beef. They came out looking pretty tasty. Unfortunately the chicken and steak were so dry they might as well be jerky. The pork belly had great flavor but mine was pretty much all fat. I also found the buns to be a little too thick for the amount of food on the inside.. however the texture was great. I think the best thing we had was the tater tots with miso ranch.

Yelp
What an amazing experience we had! My family and I gave this place a try for the first time while on vacation to DC. My first thoughts walking in was that it was such a cute little place to bring the family to eat! There was a fire pit outdoors and as you walk in there's a ping pong table that kept the kids occupied while hubby and I looked over the menu. We were greeted by a friendly smile at the front counter & she was extremely helpful in all the questions I had. I got the pork, chicken, and bulgogi buns. All 3 were excellent! The choices of protein were full of flavor. I'd highly recommend the chicken wings, as my kids LOVED them! Soy garlic to be specific. Will definitely be back to try more on the menu.

Yelp
This spot was on the list and we were in the area so stopped in. Takeout was the only option as they are renovating. My last visit to Pentagon Row was in the summer-a great atmosphere given the shops, restaurants and the outdoor square/grassy area. A different feel as It was a cold January day & the Ice Skaters were out enjoying the rink. Wasn't planning on ordering an appetizer but the Loaded Tater Tots sounded too good and they didn't disappoint. Pork Belly, Scallions and the Crab Rangoon Dip was a revelation. Excellent! Got the "Choose 3 Buns"-unfortunately they were out of fried chicken (spicy, sweet soy) so we got Bulgogi, Shrimp & Pork Belly. All three were tasty with Bulgogi and Pork belly as the favorites. Prices are also reasonable. Service was friendly and order was ready when promised. Would've been good for them to post (on their site) they are renovating this location. Will be back to try the chicken and see the results of the Reno. Don't miss the Loaded Tots!

Yelp
Fun spot for some bao buns and ping pong! I like that you can sample three baos or order a la carte. I think the 3 bao flight is pretty filling though, especially if you share an app. Braised Pork Belly Bun - Fatty and delicious Spicy Fried Chicken Bun - Crispy and loved the spicy sauce Sweet Soy Fried Chicken Bun - Crispy and a good balance if you also get the spicy fried chiken. Bulgogi Bun - love the bulgogi, just wish there was more of it! Miso Chicken Bun Loaded Bulgogi Fries - Lots of cheese and bulgogi. Totally worth it and I could eat this as my meal alone! Noodle Bowl - A sweet noodle and tofu dish. it's a pretty good size as a meal on it's own. Curry Beef Bao - Love the curry flavors inside, just wish there was more of it! Red Braised Pork Bao - Delicious pork! I loved the chili oil it came with too.

Yelp
The chicken wings and the Bulgogi tots were good. Didn't care much for the bun. The cucumber kimchi was not flavorful at all; it was so bland. Quick and straight to the point :)

Yelp
Super happy we stopped in for lunch! Bulgogi bowl was my favorite. Perfect amount of sweetness and spice. Loved the pickled onions and cucumbers in it. The buns were good. Shrimp bun was a favorite. Pork bun was a little too porky flavor (not in a good way) Bulgogi bun was good Spicy chicken bun was great. The wings were well seasoned, crispy and the sauce(a dilly ranch ) they serve on the side is delicious! We wanted to know about the mango flavored drink and she opened one for us to try a little. It's pretty sweet but good. The sweetened milk tea in a can was good but not great.

Yelp
Have you been bun'd up yet? IYKTYK why bao buns are the talk of the town and these ones here are some you can get down with!!! There are so many goodies on the menu so while what to order may take some time to decide, you cannot go wrong with any of the options they have. The Tatertots with Miso Ranch are fantastic and worth every fried bite of goodness. The tots had that crisp outside you would expect and you should get them loaded so they will be covered and smothered with pork belly, cheese and scallions. A winning combo you never knew you needed until to take that first bite. The Smoked Chicken wings are delicious!!! They double fry them an d are chongqing spiced so there's a little kick in each bite! Skin was crispy too which is always a plus in my book. The Baos are a good deal since you get 3 for 13 although I assure you, you will want to try them all. The Korean Fried Chicken and the Fried Shrimp are the two you have to try, both filling and flavorful. Lastly, the BBQ Fried Rice is a meal all by itself. Think fried rice with meat sweats that has a smokey taste to it. For my sammie lovers and probably my favorite thing on the menu is the Smoked Fried Chicken Baowich. It's a baowich that you will bow down to as its a big and I mean big smoked double fried chicken thigh with coleslaw and white pepper!!! The skin is extra crispy so you get that asmr crunch in each bite. While the meat is still juicy and tender on the inside!! You have never had a baowich like this!! The staff here is super friendly and is willing to provide suggestions if you are unsure on what to order. The interior is set up or social distancing with a limited amount of indoor seating. They also have some outdoor seating with the option to pick up and carryout as well.

Solid place to get some lunch. I went with the three buns option which ended up being the shrimp, pork belly, and spicy chicken. I really liked the shrimp and pork belly one. Both had awesome flavor. The chicken wasn't as great as the other two flavors. A little dry. It def hit the spot but I prolly could've eaten 2 more but it's kinda pricey so better to stop there.

Yelp
I'm so glad they opened more Asian food spots in Pentagon City. Their online menu was a little confusing and not showing their bun'd up items (only the bbq spot that's coming from Kevin tien?). So, I went over in the middle of the work day to order takeaway in person. The owner was friendly and very helpful in offering suggestions on what to try based on our questions/taste. We ordered the fried chicken bun, which in my opinion is one of the best items on there. I think they should even offer it without the bun because the fried chicken is so good and is the star. I also ordered the mushroom bun (mmm highly recommended this one, too. Up there with the chicken!), pork belly (more soft than crispy) and Laotian sausage bun. There was a lot of bun to all of these...I know, I know - it is a bun place after all. But some of these dishes can sing without hiding behind the bread! The bread was a little more dense than I thought it would be. Expected more fluffiness. Also, like many "Asian fusion" spots, it catered to a more American palate and was doused in too much sauce. Again, I think the flavor of the meats and veggie could sing without hiding behind the sauce. And could use a gentler dousing of sauce to give the spotlight back to the mains. Very tasty, though. Excited to see how they build it out!

Yelp
It's a fun restaurant with tasty food and lots of seating. I got the pork belly, bulgogi, and soy fried chicken buns. I liked the pork belly the most--the meat was juicy and had a good balance of meat and fat, and the mayo and vegetable topping complemented the meat well. The vegetable was like a sweet pickled radish maybe? But very soft. I would get 3 pork belly buns next time, lol. Their bathroom has a changing table, so it's pretty baby friendly. I went during an AAPI creator event they were hosting, and it was quite nice. There were quality vendors and I would totally go to something like that again. Worth following them on Instagram if you're interested in knowing when they have an event!

Yelp
I really enjoy this place! Ha! They are so chill and the food is always a hit! Sometimes they have special items that are available off the menu. The tater tots are good! They come with miso ranch and I usually don't eat ranch but THIS right heaaaa is different! It's great! The bao buns are so good! I have had them in other places and they do NOT hit the same. These buns have fluff and flavor and a soft bouncy texture. My favorite is the fried chicken sweet soy bun! It's crispy, sweet, tangy? Idk is lit! My 2nd favorite is the friend shrimp! This place takes me to flavor town every time!

Yelp
Bun'd up was on my list for a while now to check out. I love bao buns, so a whole restaurant dedicated to them sounded like an A+ to me! We came on a Tuesday evening around 6:45/7pm and the place was a little different than I expected. It was pretty dead - but I suspect it being a Tuesday had something to do with the lack of people eating in. This restaurant is in a court yard like area with a lot of other restaurants and places to sit outside, so the area was pretty busy with people. We sat at a table inside at first and ordered everything through the app. Personally, I love and hate this. It's super convenient and you get to pay up front, without having to wait on a server. However, part of eating out is interacting with other people in my opinion. So this makes it feel more like a to-go pick up restaurant. I wouldn't necessarily go for the environment. We ordered several buns: beef bulgogi, braised pork belly, spicy shrimp, sweet soy chicken, and spicy chicken. All in all, I was happy with the buns. They had a decent portion of filling and I liked most of the options. My favorite was definitely the braised pork belly. It had a really tasty pineapple salsa on top, which I loved. My least favorite was probably the sweet soy chicken - it was just too salty for my taste. We ordered a couple more buns after the first six because we were still a little hungry and they were pretty good! However, this location closes at 8pm /(on Tuesday) and we were running up against the clock but got our order in beforehand - around 7:45pm. I don't usually like to do this, but we drove quite a ways to try these buns and enjoyed them, so we decided it was worth it. The staff was starting to close up before 8pm and it was making me feel even more guilty. We were sitting outside at this point and a few more people were trying to eat here, but quickly were dissuaded by the appearance of staff closing up. I honestly know the feeling, I used to work in a restaurant too. However, it just makes people uncomfortable in my opinion and if you close at 8pm, I really think staff should avoid cleaning up sooner if people are still there eating. It feels like a nudge to get out the door asap - which I'm sure it is. The staff was friendly when they spoke to us, I just didn't like feeling like I was being pushed out when they weren't even technically closed yet. Giving this 4 stars because I enjoyed the buns and would return, but I didn't love this particular experience. I'd also try out different locations too to see how they compare.

Yelp
Found a piece of sharp broken plastic in my rice bowl. Needless to say, won't be eating there again.

Yelp
I've been a customer of Bun'd Up for close to 10 years since their earliest farmers market days. I have never been disappointed in the quality of their food. The pork belly is my most favorite. Even today, we placed a catering order for ~30 or so people and it was a hit.

Yelp
Our family had a craving for bund up during this social distancing time so we decided to order online for pick up on Bund up's website. We got 3 make-your-own bun kits (which are only $10 each!) and 2 kimbaps. Pick up was very easy, I just waited outside until my name was called. I tipped on their venmo @bundup which was also very convenient. The food was packaged very nicely and as always, the food was DELICIOUS! The buns were so fluffy and soft, the eggplant was flavorful and the beef and pork belly were amazing. The fried tofu was a bit plain, but paired with the sauces and additional garnishes it was perfect. Will definitely order online again soon!

Yelp
This is the place to go for bao buns! The buns are perfectly made and taste great! The fillings had perfect blends of flavors and left us wanting more. We tried 4 different bao buns fried chicken, fried shrimp, pork belly, & Korean bbq. The fillings all had perfectly balanced flavors and tasted great in a bao bun! The tater tots were fried light and crispy.

Yelp
Ok so the food is alrightttt. It's deff season-less super bland like literally little to no flavor! As I was eating the loaded tots and saw the oil I got sick immediately, Inserted a pic. Apparently it's "stu grease" as the cashier stated....? (To me it's oil/grease) that should've been drained as you top the fries (imagine this arriving to your home after sitting in oil to delivered for a Togo order ). I threw away the entire thing bc my tots were drenched and it just tasted like I was eating tots soaked in olive oil. Yuck Also, The service could definitely be better super awkward and unwelcoming by staff although the cashier was nice this day. I explained my concerns with my food and was ignored. Not worth $30 plus

Yelp
YAY FOR BUN'D UP! This eatery is owned by Scott, and they started off as a food stall at local farmers markets. I'm so glad that they finally have a brick-and-mortar in the Pentagon Row area, as their items are delicious! The menu offers bao buns (putting a 'modern, Korean twist' on Taiwanese baos), rice bowls, fried rice, and other house specials (such as Sushi Rice Tots and Chicken or Pork Dumplings). They locally source from Springfield Farm in MD - applause! The hubs and I came here for a later dinner, and we were greeted warmly by the owner himself, Mr. Scott! We ordered 3 of the bao buns: the Korean BBQ Beef (with cucumber kimchi, chili sauce, and scallions), the Pork Belly (with pineapple kimchi, cilantro lime aioli (we had this one the side due to my huge cilantro aversion), and scallions), and Korean Fried Chicken (we opted for the sweet soy (instead of the spicy), topped with slaw and scallions); the House Kimchi Fried Rice, topped with fried shrimp (but you can choose other proteins, such as Korean BBQ Beef, Pork Belly, or Miso Chicken); and, the Bulgogi Cheese Steak with Tots. The food was so tasty! The buns, that are handmade, were the perfect fluffy- and softness; no dry or stale parts here! They were probably one of the best bao buns I've had! The Korean BBQ Beef (aka bulgogi) had the perfect marinade, hitting both the sweet and the savory. The KFC was fried well, and the soy glaze was very subtle. The pork belly was super tender and juicy. I really enjoyed the kimchi fried rice - well-fermented kimchi, a perfect sunny-side-up egg with slight crispy edges, and the lightly breaded shrimp were plump and juicy. I was a huge fan of the Bulgogi Cheese Steak, as the bread was lightly toasted, and the sub was filled generously with the bulgogi, cheese, and this nice spicy mayo-like sauce. The tots were nice and crispy and a great complement to the sub. I really appreciate the fact that they actually take the time to really prep the food with love and care! I'd love to come back and try out their dumplings, their Sushi Rice Tots, and the Bao Bread Pudding. There's also a mini 'bodega' off to the side, with cool Asian beverages/refreshments, snacks, and cute colored hats. I hope this place sticks around for the long run! There's metered parking around the area. +Bulgogi Cheese Steak! +delicious handmade bao buns! +tasty kimchi! +yummy Korean BBQ Beef (bulgogi)! +House Fried Kimchi Fried Rice +Scott, the friendly owner! +located in Pentagon Row, currently behind the ice rink +metered parking in the area

Yelp
Pork belly is a must! Perfect combination of flavors. The pork belly is just fatty enough without being overbearing. The mango is ripe enough to have that sweet twang with a slight tartness. Bulgogi is marinated well. Blend of the spice and cucumber is spectacular. I enjoy spice, but sometimes the spiciness level over-power the flavor, but not in this case! I'd recommend this to those that enjoy a bit of spice The spicy chicken was flavorful but my least favorite of the 3, but that said it's tough to compare chicken against pork and beef. In my opinion the spicy chicken was a tad bit dry, but enjoyable nonetheless. The bun is amazingly light/ fluffy with a mild sweetness that goes perfectly with the meats and condiments.

Yelp
Visited during the pandemic Easy to order online and contactless pick up! Have been wanting to try it for a while ... however the store next to my place in the union market was temporary closed.. I was in Alexandria and was so excited to find they have a store here. They only have a limited menu and I do agree with other review that it prob has more sauce than it need. Held up pretty well after a 30 min drive home FYI- The store is located in a plaza and there's free one hour underground garage parking!

Yelp
Hubby and I decided to go here after a recommendation. We're got a few buns, tots, and the vegan dumplings as they were out of the pork dumplings. It was fairly quiet in the place considering they had the patio door open and a bunch of people and kids were outside. Everything was good just not boast worthy. And not worth the decent drive we took. But if we are in the neighborhood would definitely go again.

Yelp
In the area? Check this place out! Great deal and tasty Asian food! 3 baos for $13! What a steal for the DMV area. I came here for dinner, before I went to the speakeasy, Sparrow Room, in the Pentagon Row area. I had ordered the pork belly, friend shrimp, and beef bulgolgi. Loved how flavorful the porky belly and beef bulgolgi baos were. I would probably switch the fried shrimp to a different bao. It had a crunch and did taste like shrimp; however, it was uneventful.

Yelp
The fried chicken bao (had at Something in the Water) was positively delicious. Texture was crispy and just right, loved the contrast with the soft bao. The mushroom one was good too, just wasn't my favorite compared to the chicken. I will note I had this at Something in the Water, and it was prepared well in an outdoor festival setting. Service was friendly with a smile, and I look forward to checking out the sit-down location in the future.

Yelp
I give bun'd up a 4.6/5 stars I loved the food here. They recommended the bulgogi spicy chicken and the spicy pork. I think they were all really well done. The flavor and combination in the buns was really solid. I also ordered the crab Rangoon dip and thought it was really really awesome. It paired well with the buns. If you come here make sure to get the bulgogi and try some of the appetizers. My total bill for three buns and an app was $23 not terrible for pentagon city.

Yelp
First time here for the Wife and I. We found this place on Instagram, and overall we were not disappointed. The service was nice, the woman Paris taking our order answered questions to help us with our decision. The place was quiet and had nice decor, and the outdoor seating was nice as well. The buns were delicious, not spicy as advertised but flavorful. We ordered the 2 Buns for $10. We both decided to try the Soju beverage which does contain alcohol. They taste like whatever flavor you purchase but nothing to rave about. All in all we enjoyed our first experience here.
