20 Restaurants Serving Atlanta’s Best Pasta

"Some call this the best kept Italian food secret in Sandy Springs. Sorry, not sorry for letting the cat out of the bag on this one. Located in a retail complex near the King and Queen buildings, Buon Fornello is a bare bones operation offering just 16 seats inside built around big, bold Italian flavors and fresh-made pastas. Run by Sicilian-born chef Giacomo Lazzano, expect plates of ravioli stuffed with butternut squash or lobster, squares of meaty lasagna loaded with beef bolognese, and bowls of linguine and meatballs here. Try the kitchen sink — a Sicilian pasta dish packed with meatballs, salami, mozzarella, and parmesan cheese tossed in beef bolognese. Warm up on cold days with minestrone or pasta fagioli soup, and don’t skip the cannolis for dessert." - Eater Staff

This place had the facade of a Mom and Pop restaurant. Unfortunately, the food tasted as if it was made for mass production and not with pride and love. Don't get me wrong, the food was good for the most part. My biggest complaint was the Italian sausage that I ordered tasted horrific and was fried in bitter oil. I also asked for a plain cannoli, but that was disregarded, and I was given a cinnamon and chocolate chip one. Also, the inside was cramped with awkward seating. Lastly, but most importantly, I feel $76 for two people is a bit too much for the quality and quantity that was given.

I needed lunch while at Northside Hospital. I came to Buon Fornello Cafe and ate their delicious Kitchen Sink pasta bowl. Krishna was exceptionally nice to me with his big smile. He recommended the dish, and I loved it! He also recommended the lemon dessert and coffee. Wonderful people and wonderfully delicious food!

The last time I had such great Italian food was when I was in Rome and even that was not even close. Amazing food and even better staff. Hidden gem of a place. Loved the pastas and the desserts we ordered. The pistachio cake was to die for. This is going to be my go to place now. Simple menu and don’t forget to get their macchiato!

I am visiting from out of town and was looking for a good spot to eat nearby. I stumbled upon Buon Fornello Cafe on my Google search and wow!! Their food is so delicious and it’s at a reasonable price point considering the pasta is made fresh. I loved the laid-back atmosphere too. Must try their cannoli.

I was in town on business and looking for a local experience, as usual. Buon Fornello had a good rating and was in walking distance so I decided to give it a try. The business model is definitely that of a hybrid. There is minimal seating for a restaurant and most of the business seems driven through take out and catering. That said, I really enjoyed my experience. I got the lasagna, a glass of red wine, and a tiramisu dessert for about $40. All of it was delicious and accompanied by the owner humming and singing songs in Italian while he worked, and his kids hung out nearby. It's a bit of a hole in the wall, located next to a Publix supermarket, but that's just the kind of place I like.

Five Stars! My husband and I flew in for a doctor's appointment from out of state. We came across this wonderful gem while waiting to check into our hotel. Boun Fornello Cafe & Bottega has the best Italian food we have ever had. For my main meal I had the meatballs with a cup of pasta fagolii soup. The meatballs were superb! My husband had the chicken parmesan. The chicken parmesan was topped with fresh mozzarella which was everything! For dessert we had a cannoli and tiramisu. We couldn't choice between the two so we had one of each! Every delicious item we tasted was incredible! My husband and I are huge foodies, and we're absolutely blown away with the quality of food. The wonderful lady who helped us was very welcoming and went above and beyond. She was very kind. The only downfall is I wish we could enjoy this wonderful food in the state of Michigan where we live ;) Thank you to the owners and Chef for creating such an experience.

Went 2 days in a row. Food was fabulous to say the least! Felt like we were in Italy. Owner said they might have Pizza Day on Mondays. Make sure to try the triple chocolate cake and coffee.

Yelp
Perfect name of this business. I feel like these are grandmother recipes in this small, quaint restaurant. What I loved: light design. Small menu. Personable staff. I even appreciated that the food didn't come out in 2 minutes-it was definitely made fresh. What I liked: location is ideal if you're in the area. Parking wasn't a struggle. If you're in a rush be aware it is in a shopping plaza. But I could treat myself to lunch and then go grocery shopping for dinner next door. Honestly, nothing I would say they need to improve on. I ordered the spinach salad. Didn't think I would love the blood oranges in it. But I did. The pesto pasta I ordered because I hadn't had pesto in a while. I enjoyed it. When I first got it, I thought the portion should be more. But as I ate it, I was full before I could finish. I think because it was so flavorful. Great spot. I really want to go back and enjoy a couple glasses of wine.

Yelp
Parking/atmosphere: Located in a plaza with other vendors, there's a large parking lot available which is nice. The space while small feels cute and homey. They also have outside seating available as well. If you are coming with multiple toddlers that need a high chair, this place only has one for the whole restaurant (just an FYI for families!). Service: when my family and I arrived (on a Friday), the place was pretty packed. But we told one of the waiters that we would be willing to wait and went outside because there's really no place to sit around inside other than dine in. Sadly, they forgot about us and almost seated another party that came after us until we reminded them we had been waiting. The overall service was a hit or miss, we would ask for something like red pepper flakes and it would be forgotten so we would have to ask another waiter instead. Food: - Polpette ($12): Homemade beef meatballs in marinara sauce, ricotta, topped with Parmigiano. Comes with 4 meatballs, the marinara and ricotta go great together. - Pesto ($17): Spaghetti pasta, pesto, string beans, Grana Padano. We needed to add salt to this but with it, it was very good. - Chicken ravioli in crema di Parmigiano ($19): Chicken tortellini in a creamy Parmigiano sauce. Of all the dishes we ordered I do think this was the best as a first bite. The sauce was creamy and delicate, and the tortellini was bite sized and delicious. It's so rich though that I don't think I could finish this on my own, definitely recommend sharing! - Ragu de carne ($18): Fettuccine, meat ragu', grana Padano. A solid pasta dish, there's definitely a lot of meat in it

Yelp
So this is a nice and small little eatery kind of situation. It's not a overly large chain, it's actually located in a strip mall so we only have so much space to work with. But it's still solid though. They have indoor and outdoor seating. If it's nice outside, I would suggest definitely sitting out while you dying. It's in an area that has a lot of businesses so you may come across the business crowd if you aren't going for lunch. But it's shopping center area and a street parking. So just keep that in mind too. You'll walk in and you can sit at the table bar area, which is only about four seats, or I'll grab one of us for the smaller tables. Since it's so small they don't really have a whole full staff, so the person who takes your order will probably be the person that serves your food as well. Last time I was there a lady who served us, wish I remember her name, but she was super nice. She explained the menu in great detail and gave her thoughts on the favorites and helped me customize my meal. Polpette - So the meatballs were good. There were about five of them and the ricotta cheese was at the bottom and everything was covered in sauce. Collectively. It had a really good flavor. She offered bread, so I used the bread to sop up some of the sauce as well because no flavor should be wasted. But the meatballs by themselves sounded really good flavor. Also to note, if they offer bread, the bread is not free. You know how some places will give you complimentary bread, no, this is bread service that you're getting. It'll come and a small loaf cut into pieces and come with oil. The bread is very hard and crisp on the outside but very flaky on the inside. Caesar salad - The Caesar salad was pretty good. Nothing special, probably wouldn't get it again honestly, but it was okay. Some of the lettuce wasn't as fresh that I thought it should have been but they had a lot of croutons and a lot of cheese so I guess it balanced out. It didn't have a lot of dressing on there so if you want dressing, you may have to ask for more or extra. Spaghetti fra Diavolo - now this was the star of the show for me. It was full of shrimp, and I can appreciate that. You know how some places will give you four shrimp for the meal. You just got to cut it into pieces, no I got at least ate shrimp in my dish. It was good, but it was supposed to be spicy. I asked her can I pick it up a little bit and she made it more spicy when she brought it to the table. And man let me tell you you can smell the spice when she put the plate down LOL. But it was good and it had a nice amount of pasta, sauce, and shrimp. Very good balance. Overall, it's a pretty cool spot. There are a couple of the things that I wanted to try, so I will probably stop by for lunch on another day!

Yelp
I came here in July. I did not realize how casual it is. It is a very casual spot next to Willy's and Publix. I was initially seated, but no one acknowledged me for at least 15 mins. The place was packed, but no one even brought me water. The chairs bump into each other from different tables bc it's so cramped so I decided to order to go instead when the waiter finally came. I took my food home and was hopeful bc the Arancini was delicious. The pasta was harder than al dente, and the tomato sauce tasted like something from a grocery store. The tiramisu was a little dry. I will not be back, but other people seemed to really like it.

Yelp
We began with a larger group than was anticipated. Correcting that was both a pleasant experience and a positive one. Our group was quite positive with their comments. Pleasing fourteen adults is a challenge! My wife ordered Lasagna, because I had been so positive about t on our earlier visit. I chose Lasagna Al Funghi to see how different (or similar) it was. My personal choice is the original, traditional, lasagna version - even though both were quite good. Service was extraordinarily good - prompt without hovering. Nona Dora is s great Italian find!

Yelp
Service was perfect, one server taking good care of everyone. She let us switch out pastas, diavolo sauce was great, pesto spaghetti with green beans and potatoes. too, meatballs better than most. The Sicilian red was delicious. All the pastas are homemade. A find!

Katie R.

Yelp
Very unassuming from the outside but a quaint Italian cafe feel inside! Delicious food and generous portions.

Yelp
Great service and food. Got the Ragu' di Carne and it was delicious. Bread service was crispy exterior and soft interior with olive oil. Everything made fresh in house and very reasonably priced for the quality you get. Also. Holy cow, the absolute best Tiramisu I've ever had, hands down. Wasn't expecting that but man o man, I inhaled it!

Yelp
This place is masquerading as an Italian restaurant. Smallest portions I've ever seen. U will leave hungry. No bread served with meal. Seriously. Terrible service, which is probably why they were empty.

Yelp
We had been back from a 3 week trip in Italy a few months and were craving an authentic Italian experience. Nonna Dora was just that. The atmosphere was small and cute but operated similar to places we had been in Rome and Florence. The staff were all amazing, very prompt and helpful. We had a glass of red and a Lemonchello Spritz with Cacio & Pepe fritters (amazing!!) and arancini (good but basic). For mains we had Chicken Ravioli in Crema sauce (packed with flavor in each little bite) and the Ragu. The Ragu tasted exactly like the many times we had throughout Italy. We will be back everything was delizioso!

Yelp
Came in for lunch over the weekend and was blown away by all the delicious dishes we tried! My 6 year old loved the meatballs and the lasagna (so did I) and I had the chicken ravioli and caprese salad! I can't remember the name of them but the fried Mac and cheese balls are amazing and a great snack to share amongst the table. Great spot and can't wait to come back to try more of their food and desserts!

Yelp
This restaurant is conveniently located in the same plaza as Publix. My team had lunch here and we walked from the King and Queen building across the street. The inside is small but very nicely decorated in natural colors. I ordered the ragu and it was delicious - tasted fresh and homemade. The portion size was big and left me feeling very full. We split dessert, which was very unique and not too sweet. It was a bit pricey but I do want to come back and try other pasta dishes.

Yelp
Casual atmosphere. Delicious pasta. Great service. Reasonable prices. Generous portion sizes. Will be back!

Yelp
What a great casual Italian addition to the Perimeter area dining scene. While the restaurant is small with tables closely packed inside, the quality of the authentic Italian pasta and other dishes more than compensates. My branzino was cooked to perfection with a fresh sauce of tomatoes, olives and herbs, accompanied by a delicious side of spinach in garlic and olive oil. My family enjoyed the fettuccine Alfredo with chicken and shrimp pasta fra diavolo. Both were made with high quality, fresh ingredients with a taste that you would expect to be at a much higher price point. Cannolo was freshly filled with ricotta cheese and mini chocolate chips. We will definitely return soon!

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem. The Italian food is very authentic and delicious. Cool atmosphere and excellent service. I highly recommend everything but especially loved the Italian coffee and tiramisu.

Yelp
Tried it for the first time tonight. Cute little place, awesome vibe. Felt like we were in Italy. We ordered the crostone and spinach salad to start. The crostone was perfect and was probably the highlight of the entire meal. For entrees, we split the margherita pinsa and ragu di carne. The pinsa was light, crunchy, and flavorful. The ragu di carne was also very good. Tons of flavor. Service was also excellent. Definitely recommend giving it a try. I am looking forward to going back and trying something else on the menu.

The O.

Yelp
We ordered the "pizza" and meatballs. I put pizza in quotes because they call it "pinsa." Both were very good. It's not typical, Americanized Italian food, but very tasty. This was a takeout order, but the restaurant has a cool vibe inside and a large patio area for when the weather is right. There is a small bar as well. Overall, it feels like Italy. Will definitely be a regular now.

Yelp
Living close to the center where Nonna Dora is located we decided to have dinner. Let me begin by stating that this small cafe will take off like a jet plane. The flat Margherita Flat Breadd was light with a lot of flavor. We also shared the Pan fried very thin chicken which was excellent. Great service. Cut restaurant.

Yesenia M.

Yelp
Ugh! The fettuccine/ragu meat sauce was horrible. Salty! The cheese square wasn't good either. The bread was good! The music didn't make sense either. They played punk rock music in an Italian restaurant. Weird!!

Moe J.

Yelp
Excellent service and truly authentic Italian food. The lasagna was delicious, the gnocchi very good, and the mozzarella in carrozza was tasty too. We will be back soon.

Eli V.

Yelp
Such a cute little place at a great location. Recently opened. The food is absolutely delicious! We tried the Diavola Pinsa and the Pesto and Prosciutto Pinsa and both were amazing. We tried their non-alcoholic drinks, the mojito lime and the orange and both were very refreshing. Customer service was excellent and we'll definitely be back!

Mareena K.

Yelp
Authentic Italian food made fresh! I've been here quite a few times so lots of pictures...

Michael H.

Yelp
Food was OK had the lasagna they say it's homemade but you can see. They just microwave it in the back. Very mid Service was good.

Elsa G.

Yelp
This place is great! The Frittatine Cacio e Pepe is just divine, and the service is wonderful! I will be back!

Paula R.

Yelp
We were excited to see saw had focaccia pizza on the menu online. But when we got there to order we were told they no longer make that kind of pizza. They make flat bread pizza. So that was very disappointing as that was the reason we went to the restaurant. We ordered mozzarella en carozza but it tasted sweet. It seemed like both slices of bread that enclosed the mozzarella had sugar or some kind of sweet ingredient. We had a salad which was ok but not worth the 10.00/12.00. The waiter was very nice and apologized for the changes in the menu. It was unfortunate that they were open for only 6 weeks and never updated their menu online or in their restaurant.
