20 Appealing Dining Destinations in Del Mar

"Overlooking the Los Penasquitos Lagoon, this casual New York-style pizza joint serves fresh slices from the oven, along with old-school meatball sandwiches and calzones. Be sure to grab a garlic knot before they sell out. The place gets busy when you can grab a beer at the outdoor bar and enjoy the sunset." - Helen I. Hwang

Google
Thin crust pizza was ok, crust is not really NY style, but the ingredients were fresh ($21). Garlic knotts were fluffy and fresh, there were 6 of them came with sauce for $7.50. Beer is kind of pricey at $8.75 for a pint. It was busy on a Sunday and had nice seating inside and out. The staff were friendly, nice place to try on a sunny afternoon.

I love this spot! After hiking around Torrey Pines this is a great spot to swing by for lunch. They have a menu board in front which tells you the price for 1 slice, 2 slice, and then if you want a combo (add a drink). The workers were really kind and took the time to ask questions-- like if you wanted to eat in or take out, if you want any drinks or anything else, etc. Something to note is that they have the pizzas displayed and you point to which one you want and then they heat it up for you. Although, sometimes it can be confusing since there are no name tags or descriptions near the pizza -- so for the ones that aren't classics, you're basically describing to them what you want (which takes a bit longer). I have had the caesar salad once before, but at the time I went the caesar dressing was super oily. So, if you do order a salad, I would recommend choosing a different dressing. I did like how fresh the lettuce was and the amount of croutons they gave. I also had tried the Buffalo Chicken Pizza and it was delicious! Would reccommend this! When I had 2 slices it cost me $8.50 and the Small Caesar Salad cost $8. In the end, I probably wouldn't get the salad again since the pizza was a better deal and price. Today, I just went with 1 slice of Combo Pizza. I like the dough and how it's thin but with a nice chew to it. The sauce is flavorful and herby. I liked the sausage that was on this combo pizza. The combo pizza comes with mushrooms, sliced onions, sliced green bell peppers, black olives, pepperoni, and cheese. It cost $4.25 for 1 slice.

Google
The ranch!! big slices, they have parm, chilli flakes, marinara and ranch to add to your pizza. The place is in a beautiful spot where you can enjoy some sun, and is next to a coffee shop so you can always combine. Buffalo chicken is a must

Google
Buonasera New York Pizzeria Torrey Pines finally open and I'm excited to have great New York style thin crust close by! Great views from the bar and eating area to Torrey Pines Lagoon. Fresh hot pizza by the slice or whole pizza is delicious. Meal deal 2 slices and a drink is there specials. Antipasti looked great and will give that a try next visit. Don't forget to try the Gluten Free Pizza, the crust is crispy and the best I have tried so far!

Google
Buonasera New York Pizzeria's pizza is solid, but the sunset view is straight goals. It's the real reason to come here! grab a slice and soak up those golden vibes!

Google
The best pizza I had so far ! We had 4 varieties of veggie pizza and all 4 were delicious.Their crust is crisp and flavorful! The best part is you can order by slice , making it more convenient to try varieties!

Google
Good pizza. All the employees address customers by the word ‘buddy’ which could lower the class of this establishment because sometimes buddy is used in a condescend way. Come here once a week and they address everyone like that, not just me. Might be the higher SES locals addressing them as locals because the employees are minorities and have different legacy potential. The employees may not even be aware of all these dynamics. Not their fault but final outcome is still negative. Suggested is ownership control restaurant brand social culture to help produce maximal demand. People go where they feel good,

Solid pizza. Good service and great atmosphere. Price is good.

Yelp
Love the salad and pizza and service! The staff is kind and professional! Love this place! Been a patron for years!

Yelp
I wasn't expecting much but we were starving and needed to grab a quick bite while waiting for coffee. The pizza by the slice is AMAZING. Got the chorizo with jalapeño and wow. The crust is perfectly thin without being too thin and the ingredients are well balanced. Ample seating inside and outside. Street parking and a small parking area in the back. Service is friendly.

Yelp
I spilt ranch on my shirt and didn't notice until the end of dinner cause EVERYTHING was PERFECTION. My husband and I got 3 pepperonis, 1 Hawaiian and 2 garlic knots and we are currently in a food comma. Customer service was perfection as well in addition to a really dope ambiance. Anytime we are back in town we are forsure making a stop back here! Food coma worth it! Thanks everyone for the hospitality and deliciousness!

Yelp
This spot is very close to the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve! After hiking there, you can stop by here to get some delicious pizza and great views. I ordered the two slices of pizza, a drink, and a garlic knot. The garlic knot was decent. I was hoping for more of a garlicky flavor. The meat lovers slice was great. I also enjoyed the spice from the jalapeño pepperoni slice. The pizza has a solid crust and great flavor. I would definitely come back here to get some pizza after a nice beach day or hike!

Yelp
Great location for a post hike grub! Crust is thin and crispy but I prefer my crust with a bit of chew. The toppings can get a bit too salty. However feeling the ocean breeze while eating a slice of pizza after a hike/run feels like heaven .
google avatar

Yelp
Cool spot with indoor and outdoor seating! We got the supreme pizza (28") and the Large antipasto. It was a good portion for the group of 4 of us and I really liked the spiral of cheese and meats in the salad.

Yelp
I don't know what to say. Last time I ordered from here to go when we went to pick up our order the pizza box was sitting in the warming oven empty. OK mistakes happen and we had to sit around for 25 minutes while they made us another pizza. Today I go to pick up my order and they said the delivery guy accidentally took our order of wings and they had to make our order of wings. What really made me upset was the way the handled it. Both times just a shrug and I had to sit around while they corrected their mistakes. No sincere apology no offer for a discount on a future order or an offer to take something off our current check. Just plain poor customer service.

Yelp
As a born, bred and buttered New Yorker I have a p a l a t e for my pizza! This has been the ultimate conquest for me as a new Californian. I find myself getting almost there. Thankful for the kind citizen I struck up a convo with at the Cardiff farmers market who found out I was from upstate NY and asked me if I found good pizza here and recommended this place- NYers always looking out for one another. It's a ways away but if I was in the area I'd def pop in for a slice and a drink. Not sure about parking but looks like only street parking and it's busy. Small dining area but seemed to turnover quickly- love the patio area with seats and a full bar. The pizza was tasty. I'd be curious to try their famous crime scene slice. The garlic knots were also good and large. It was nice to have the salad options to feel like I had a balance meal. Can't wait to come back and try more of the menu. Oh and the price point is really good! About $13 for that and you could easily split between 2.
google avatar

Tessi D.

Yelp
We love it here- patio is great to watch the game or just bring the dog and hang. I usually have the pizza deal $4 a slice, but today splurged for the Italian sandwich- $13- it is a totally sleeper item on menu... Amazing and one of the best. Staff said the meatball sub is even better! It's also big enough for two to share.

Yelp
On my way to San Diego I was craving some pizza so I stopped by. I've been wanting to come here, and I was not disappointed. I got one of their specials you could get a beer with a couple of slices of pizza. Pizza was good crust was amazing. There is indoor and outdoor sitting. And a bar right in front. Once you order your pizza, you go to the bartender and pick up your beer. I sat in the bar and I had a nice view. Service was great. They're pretty fast. Can't wait to come back.

Yelp
Great spot to grab a couple of slices of pizza after a hike at Torrey Pines Tasty pizzas and knots with great and friendly service
google avatar

Sasha P.

Yelp
I like the pizza here but the garlic rolls are the best! Service was great, there was a bit of a line but it moved quickly. Decent seating outside with a few tables inside.
google avatar

Yelp
Really enjoyed this casual pizza eatery! It was late and we were looking for a place to grab a bite on Saturday night. They had a big screen TV inside with the game on and a large patio bar outdoors. The interior is small with counter service, very quick and efficient. Pizza was good, around $4 a slice and the garlic knots (more like rolls) at $1.50 each were delicious.
google avatar

Yelp
Let me start off by saying the food is good, that is not at all my complaints. We got the 3 slice and drink deal, plus a salad and a pasta Alfredo. The pasta was spaghetti noodles vs Alfredo noodles but I let that slide since the sauce was good. The pizza was also good, the salad was probably my favorite since it was so fresh. My complaint mainly is the flies, the place is infested inside and outside, we sat inside thinking it would be best but it was a struggle to eat with a whole bunch of flies, about 20 of them just were we were at. I had to cut it short and finish the rest at home, parking can also be a struggle as there is other shops (coffee shop & taco shop) and only 6 parking spaces. It's in a neighborhood so street parking was very tight. Sadly I won't return because the flies concern is a major no for me.

Yelp
What's nice about this place is that you can order by the slice. Meaning you can order and try different pizzas! You can also do a combo and get a soda with it too. I had 2 slices (total $8.50) and a Small Caesar Salad ($8) and I asked it to be with Caesar dressing. The dressing looked strange and tasted like oil. It was weird, so...I ate the salad dry. Next time I'll ask for ranch! I had one slice of the Buffalo Chicken Pizza and once slice of the Combo Pizza. Overall they were pretty solid! I really like the red sauce for the combo (fragrant herbs) and the sausage was super tasty. The Buffalo Chicken Pizza had the perfect amount of ranch and buffalo sauce! Place was nice and spacious and they played good music--(Dear Maria, Count Me In).

Yelp
We stopped by today for some slices of pizza after the gym (ironic right). Street parking was limited as expected on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Torrey Pines. There's a bar area which is convenient if you want full service vs ordering inside with cashier. The slices of pizza available are on full display in front. They have a nice 3 slices with soda for $13. They had a great tv/projector in main room playing Sunday football. Ordering was easy but not personable. I wanted a calzone and asked for advice b/w that ($16) vs the $13 for 3 slices. He didn't really say much except calzone would take 30m to make vs 2 min to heat up the slices of pizza. The guys heating up the slices were SUPER cool and helpful though! They offered suggestions on the slices and even gave me thoughts about the calzone vs stromboli. I enjoyed the Crime Scene slices as well as the Meat Lover slice. The crust was well crisped and had a nice chew to it. I would come back to try more items.

Yelp
Saw this place on my way to Torrey Pines off Carmel Valley Rd. When returning to the hotel, I made a pit stop and was glad I did. I got the Margherita pizza, which is simple and classic. Although, the display case was full of other delicious choices. They take your chosen slice and pops it back in the oven to warm up. The pizza is thin (which I prefer) and you can smell the basil after having been warmed up. The crust has just enough char as it was still pliable and can be folded in half. I paired it with a glass of Chardonnay at the bar. The ambiance was perfect, with the cool breeze and the sun setting in the background.

Yelp
Busy spot, for good reason. The food is good and the locals love it. Besides the pizza, I highly recommend the meatballs which are really tasty.

Yelp
After a hike at Torrey Pines Reserve, a group of us stopped by Buonasera Pizza to refuel--and it did not disappoint! We ordered the Spinach and Ricotta along with a Pepperoni and Sausage pizza. The crust? Spot on, crispy yet chewy, just what we needed after a long day on the trails. The Spinach and Ricotta was light and flavorful, while the Pepperoni and Sausage hit all the right savory notes. What really made the experience even better was the view. With a spacious indoor and outdoor seating area, we were able to kick back and enjoy the relaxing atmosphere. Great food and a great place to unwind after a hike!
google avatar

Jay G.

Yelp
Came here to hike the trail by the restaurant. Stopped by for a couple drinks after. One of the nicest views and even better service. The hospitality is immaculate! Restaurants should strive for this type of atmosphere and Buonasera sets the bar high!
google avatar

Sarah J.

Yelp
I was pleasantly surprised by this little place. The pizza is great and view isn't too bad either. You should check it out if you are in the area.
google avatar

Sharon W.

Yelp
Came for a quick bite and love their new york style pizza! Crust is thin crust and tomato sauce was delicious along with a great cheese pull! Only sad thing was I came during a lunch rush and they ran out of pizza by the slice so my options were limited. Still happy with their cheese pizza and will come back to try their other slices! They have outdoor seating with a great view and also indoor seating with a large tv for any big games.
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
Great place for a slice and to hang out after a hike or to watch a gorgeous San Diego sunset!
google avatar

Leslie C.

Yelp
Perfectly fine but definitely nothing special. Parking is a major hassle. The pizza was very average. The large house salad was plenty for two and well priced. The guy who took our order was a bit curt. There are so many better pizza places in San diego. I wouldn't bother going here. The mexican place next door is far better.
google avatar

Banu S.

Yelp
Find little spot outdoors to stop off after a hike or walk. Pizza was good, had rosé. Only beer and wine pretty much. Service was lacking. Bartender not very friendly. Just a pizza joint I suppose. Paper plates, foil containers, pretty much it. But Location and view made up for it.
google avatar

Tiffany K.

Yelp
Pizza is great. Pizza is thin crust and they have gluten-free crust available. Super friendly staff and casual atmosphere. Great for a post-hike slice. Kid friendly. Has adjoining Bird Rock coffee roasters and taco shop.
google avatar

Sam T.

Yelp
This spot has my new favorite pizza in the U.S., which is the Crime Scene (left in the photo, white sauce). The Meat Lovers (right, red sauce) was decent; however, the Crime Scene's ricotta absolutely had me stunned and wanting more each bite. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend the pasta as it lacked any sort of flavor in both the bolognese and the alfredo, but I will simply come here for their pizzas. The pizza alone would have easily been five stars, but the pasta made me settle on 4 overall due to the price of it and its worth.
google avatar

Ryna D.

Yelp
A friend of mine lives nearby and this is her neighborhood pizza spot. I came here for dinner with her one day. Pizza is decent but nothing special. The view overlooking Torrey Pines is nice and around sunset it's certainly a nice hangout spot. The beer selection is also very good.
google avatar

Seth C.

Yelp
This place kills it with the pizza--tons of slice options and every one I've tried has been awesome. Fluffy & crunchy crust, just how it should be. Great place to watch sports inside or watch the sunset and the patio bar and still catch the game. Employees are always very friendly and polite and have given me some really good suggestions on stuff to try The beer selection is ample, especially if you like trying local brews. And do not skip out on the garlic knots with marinara! seriously, they're a must every single time
google avatar

Mar B.

Yelp
Tried it a few times since they opened. Pizza is not too great and it was overheated so the crust was hard to chew. It was a little too dark on the patio at night, hard to find seating. Lots of loud kids also.
google avatar

Jessica C.

Yelp
Ordered a large Meat Lovers and a large Pepperoni pizza. Both were amazing!!! Definitely highly recommend. Also ordered a 20 traditional buffalo wings double baked!! So great as well. Staff were super friendly and helpful. Environment was upbeat and inviting. Would definitely recommend coming and eating!!
google avatar

kaitlyn c.

Yelp
Good pizza, amazing view of Torrey pines, super affordable and delicious! They have their own outside bar and patio. We got to watch the game while enjoying our pizza.
google avatar

Lili T.

Yelp
Stopped by here after a nice hike at Torrey Pines! A perfect San Diego day to enjoy the outdoors. We were looking for a place to eat after and thought a few slices of pizza would be perfect. Buonasera popped up on Yelp and we are so glad we gave it a try! Great pizza, great service, amazing experience! Can't wait to come back soon!

What E.

Yelp
Eh it's fine. Floppy pizza. Thin-ish crust. Garlic knot hardly has any garlic flavor at all.
google avatar

Chris B.

Yelp
This has to be one of our favorite pizza places. If you like a good thin crust, this place is a must try. Pizzas are already made, you can pick whatever slices you want - buy by the slice or the pizza. Special requests are made to order, with gluten free as an option. We've tried most of their selection and everything was amazing, our favorite has to be the meat lovers. Bonus is the view. The restaurant sits overlooking the water front and at the right times, you can enjoy the sun set with your meal. There are plenty of outside seating to enjoy the weather. Parking is tough, mostly street parking but we never had an issue (purely by luck) every time we came.
google avatar

Tony T.

Yelp
This is such a great little quick pizza spot. You can't go wrong with getting a slice and getting it warmed up. It comes out great. Not only was the pizza tasty but it was quite reasonable. We are definitely coming back here again in the future. I would suggest the ricotta and sausage pizza. It's far better than the more well-known pizza place in Orange County that does the same thing.
google avatar

Hector N.

Yelp
the pizza and the view were outstanding. love the thin crispy crust. i'll be back
google avatar

Alyssa S.

Yelp
Great service today from Ervin. We got a slice pie, which is a great deal. 8 mix and match slices for $28. One was the new eggplant ricotta slice (here on my plate once I took it home). Yum!
google avatar

Kandace K.

Yelp
This place is adorable. It overlooks the grassy lands right by the ocean and you can see the ocean as well very very clean. The food is mouthwatering delicious. Also great bar selection of beers and wine :-) service was fast and very kind. They brought us our food (instead of grabbing from counter) will make this a regular place for sure!
google avatar

Deniz K.

Yelp
Finally, a place with a great view AND excellent food!! The crime scene is epic, the meatballs are fantastic,, however our go to classic is a large cheese, extra cheese, well done! Even just this cheese pizza is a hit when we bring it to parties! Love Javier and the whole team at Buonasera! And the 2 alive special with a drink is a steal, best pizza in north county.
google avatar

Johnderson V.

Yelp
Pizza and beer. With a side of sunset and Harley. Can't forget the 3 big screen TV to watch the world series
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious NY style pizza. Got meat lovers and chorizo. I'll definitely come back when in the area.
google avatar

Sarah A.

Yelp
Came here for a bite to eat after a little hiking the other day. The service was amazing, i wish I could remember the bar tenders name! It has the nicest outdoor patio area if you're wanting to sit in the sun and it was perfect. Highly recommend and I will definitely be back!

Yelp
Although we have lived in SD for 24 years, we had not yet tried Buonasera's. After a neighbor recommendation, we did so last Saturday. Great bar setting, cold beers on draft (we had Pacifico's) and we picked up a very tasty, wonderful pepperoni pizza to go. The reason for the "4" was totally the bartender. He was deeply engaged in a conversation with what appeared to be regulars and we were treated as annoyances. It wasn't just the two of us so we know it wasn't personal. Must be wonderful job security or perhaps he's the owner - the treatment wasn't even subtle. Anyway, we hope for better service next time. If not, no worries - we are all fortunate to have so many alternative choices so near by where we live.
google avatar

Jack M.

Yelp
This place offers some pretty good pizza. Next time, I need to try one of their sandwiches. I had the three slice special with a beverage for $12.50. I had a slice of the supreme, the crime scene, and the Miramar. All three slices were quite good, but my favorite was the crime scene with meatballs, ricotta, and dollops of house marinara sauce. the slices came on a very good crust. The crust was not only tasty but offered a slight crunchiness and a bit of chew. The red sauce on the supreme had a good balance between acidity and a touch of sweetness. They offer a lot of different pizza varieties and also make sandwiches, salads, pastas, and calzone & strombolis. Service is good. The place has a large patio and inside seating. They serve beer and wine.

Yelp
Drove all the way here from Otay Ranch to enjoy a beer and scenery on a beautiful Sat morning. Walked up to a semi empty bar and was told ALL remaining 13 empty seats were taken. When I walked away the bartender says "see what I do for you guys" - while talking to an older guy. There were reserved signs spread out. I sat across eating my food and watched the bar remain empty for a good 20-30 minutes until one by one, "regulars" came to the bar. One woman didn't even order a beer or food. I get it that there are locals who come here often. But that doesn't mean the entire bar should be reserved to them? Super disappointed in this place as I'm moving to the area in 2 weeks. Coming from a family of small business owners, I know how important these star reviews are so it sucks to leave a bad one. But integrity and customer service are important to all patrons.
google avatar

Cheska T.

Yelp
Buon pomeriggio! There's no parking lot so you have to have luck on your side with street parking! It's very close to Torrey Pines and next to Roberto's and Bird rock! We got the garlic knots, mira mar, crime scene and margherita! The crime scene was heavy but yummy. Our favorite was the mira mar. Would come back again to try more ciao!!!
google avatar

B'ma S.

Yelp
We keep going back because the food is great! Good deal to get 8 differnt slices so you can try all the flavors. The garlic knots are awesome! Try the ranch!

Yelp
We were in town for the holiday weekend and found this place right next to the Marriott Del Mar where we were staying. We decided to stop by for lunch since it had great reviews! As soon as we got there, we noticed a very packed restaurant, which is a great sign. They had pizza slices, garlic knots, salads, and calzones on display. I decided to try the margherita pizza, Hawaiian pizza, and the antipasto salad. Everything was superb!!! Delicious pizza that totally satisfied my craving. Yum!
