"Stroll to the back of neighborhood store Burbage’s for a vinegar-based pulled pork sandwich. It’s like finding a hidden treasure that has the option of pimento cheese or cole slaw." - Erin Perkins

Burbage's is a longtime (opened in 1946), family-owned small grocery on Broad Street. It is close to the Cathedral of St John the Baptist and Colonial Lake. It looks more like a convenience store, but it is full of specialty food items. It has a decent selection of local products, which includes their own brand of chocolates. The store has a deli in the back as well, offering hot dogs, sandwiches and soups. As a grocery, you will not find everything you need here. There are no fresh items, but if you live nearby and are looking for some random pantry ingredients, a certain sauce or a bottle of wine and do not want to travel far, this shop will do in a pinch.

Burbage’s Grocery is a Charleston institution on Broad Street in historic downtown. A small corner grocery offering curated wines and grocery items, a deli counter, take and go foods such as fresh pasta and sauces, take and bake bread, King Pops, and some carefully selected home goods such as local coffee, Smithy’s beautiful cast-iron ware, and quick hostess gifts like fresh flowers and candles. Family run. We frequent Burbages often and are so grateful for them!

A Charleston icon since the 40s, this spot has been near and dear to many Charleston families. Amazing premade meals, damn good hot dogs, damn good bbq sandwiches and much more

Wide selection of good local foods. Been going here for years to grab lunch

Stopped in on our walk around Charleston to grab some hydration. Burbage’s was a welcome retreat from the Charleston heat and humidity. They have lots of eclectic food and drink items, but they also have a counter in the back that has freshly made breakfast sandwiches, hot dogs, and barbecue sandwiches. We loved the bacon/egg/cheese biscuit, as it had a notable just-fried egg, and we also enjoyed the Carolina style (vinegar based) barbecue sandwich, which was also tasty. As far as take home items, lots of fresh pasta are available for purchase to cook at home, as well as other global cuisine, like Korean mandu (dumplings)! The staff at the store were kind, personable, and helpful in directing us to our next location. If you’re in the area, stop in and grab a drink, a hot dog, or a snack - you won’t be disappointed!

Google
A wonderful family-owned shop. It’s a small space, so it’s not a full grocery store, but it is a LOT more special! They have amazing pasta, local Charleston products and snacks, and a deli section. I highly recommend picking up their deviled eggs and banana pudding. Their frozen selection is great, too!

We went there as part of a tour. It's an incredible spice store right there in the middle of Charleston. The person that explained the spices to us was full of energy and loved what she was talking about. We got someone usual spices and can't wait to use them.

Google
What a great little neighborhood corner store with all the best and most needed groceries. The BBQ sandwiches are the best SOB;)

Yelp
Burgages is a staple in my life, i am a nanny and. the kids love going and picking out snacks after school. They have so many wonderful brands so you can always find something. We personally love the chicken salad, all homemade in the back of the store. You cant go wrong with grabbing some develied eggs or the brunswick stew, both a staple in the fridge. They alos have hotdogs which is a winner for the kids. The parking can be a little tricky but its always a quick turn around because everyone is just popping in and out. Its usually very busy on Friday's after 3 or during lunch time because they do have sandwich so people will hop in to get their hands on them. The team there is amazing, very sweet and helpful people. Dont forget to add fresh flowers and an oatmeal raisin cookie to the basket!

Yelp
A little historic-looking shop in a historic neighborhood with a limited selection of food items trending towards the local. Lowcountry kettle chips are delicious but hard to find, so I was happy they had a few, and even with a beverage I came in below their $5 credit card minimum, so at least it wasn't crazy. For more comprehensive options, you'd certainly need to leave the Battery area, but I was satisfied to have stopped here.

Yelp
I work downtown on Broad St now, and Burbages has been my one stop shop for lunch a few times. They have premade sandwiches in the fridge, but they also make fancy hot dogs in the back. My favorite hot dog so far is The Charleston, which has pimento cheese and pickled okra on top. Just a few bites and it's gone though. They're usually busy right around lunchtime, so I wait a little bit and get there when I think it'll be slower. It's far enough away from the busy side of town so it's really only used by the locals on the westside of the peninsula, or those who know the magic and will drive a bit out of their way for it. Lots of other snacks and drinks to fill your belly.

Yelp
Burbages Grocery is such a little gem South of Broad. It is a grocery store, deli, and popular after school hangout. They have a variety of beverages, wines, snacks, and basic necessities. They have fresh flowers for purchase, deli sandwiches made to order and hotdogs! The employees are always welcoming and super kind!

Yelp
A fantastic, historic gem on Broad Street. They have an excellent selection of gourmet food, as well as groceries including fresh fruits & veggies. Wonderful deli stocked with Boars-head, cheeses, etc and they prepare to order. Great hotdogs! The pre-made sandwiches, salads, SOUPS :), cookies, cakes and brownies are delicious. The staff is so friendly & helpful and treat everyone really well. We are regulars here and will continue to be.

Yelp
Burbage's Self Service Grocery on Broad Street in Charleston is a great place to go for all things that you need in a neighborhood grocery store. They have been consistent in their quality and reliable every time I have been here. The staff here is very friendly and accommodating.

Nehal B.

Yelp
A neighborhood institution. Always easy to find what you need. Friendly service and good selection!

Kat T.

Yelp
This is a small family run neighborhood grocery store in the residential downtown area convenient to the battery and South of Broad residents. Prices are slightly higher, but you're paying for the convenience. If you're rushed for time, they prepare lunch and dinner meals for eat in or take out. They have most of your basics available and they are also a drop site for a local CSA. There is usually parking on Broad Street right out front, but if not, you can just temporarily park along the road and run in without an issue.

Yelp
Like your old fashioned, tiny grocery. They have a beautifully curated selection of groceries, snacks and wine and beer. Family owned and operated. Excellent staff who truly care about their clients. They have frozen, homemade meals to take home and put in the oven for a quick dinner. They make sandwiches and soups at lunch. Most of the working folks that paint, build and garden South of Broad, eat lunch here. *Vegetarian Tip: They make an amazing vegetable sandwich. You have to order it at the counter and it's not written on the menu, but they will happily make it. Perfect for a hot Charleston summer day. Crispy vegetables including peppers and cucumbers on hummus with kimchi.

Yelp
A Charlston Staple! Wonderful staff...you can literally find everything you need and few things you didn't even know existed.

Jessica C.

Yelp
Awesome corner store with great staff. I lived in the neighborhood and loved coming in to grab a bite to eat, or a few groceries.

Milly C.

Yelp
Burbages is a wonderful corner store with everything one would need and more! Their barbecue sandwiches, coleslaw, turkey sandwiches, chicken salad, fresh baked goods and beyond are delicious. This lovely establishment has existed on Broad Street for many years and holds a special place in local's hearts. Locally hand made cards are for sale here too. This place is not to be missed!

Brendan C.

Yelp
Seemed like some nice meats, mainly a functional deli with a nice selection of pre-made soups, sandwiches and sides ready to go. Produce is SUPER LIMITED, but there are some nice sodas, local commodities, wines and dry goods available. Should be treated more like a bodega than a grocer.

Julia A.

Yelp
The barbecue is excellent as are their other sandwiches. They also make their own coleslaw, pasta salads, etc that make for easy and quick meals. Highly recommend

Pinaki S.

Yelp
Local grocer and deli. Great pulled pork BBQ. Sort of view into life before the days of supermarkets.

Diane S.

Yelp
You have to visit this market! Lisa and George and family have excellent choices for meat, sandwiches, soups and wine. They are very kind neighbors and have offered their store for a Dementia Caregiver Support Group meeting on Tues. June 28, 2016 @9:00. Diane Sancho, MSW will be facilitating the group and has over 20+ years experience working with caregivers. Please join us and don't forget to shop for all your grocery needs @ Burbages--our friendly, neighborhood grocery!

AJ S.

Yelp
Step through the immaculate white storefront into this mom and pop grocery, a treasured remnant of times past. The only corner store around that's not seedy and not run by bearded hipsters. They have a limited selection and slightly higher prices than larger retailers but a great deli, specialty products that are hard to find, and house-made soups, pimento, shrimp salad, and other tasty prepared foods along with local brands like frozen pasta from Bertolini (the guys who sell freshly rolled pastas at the farmers market). So glad Burbage exists!

W. Stephen T.

Yelp
Nice neighborhood market that is family owned. They have drinks and a small selection of groceries. The old man and woman at the register are the sweetest people. Their sandwiches are great and cheap. I think they run you about $3.00. They also have pulled pork sandwiches that are also great. A great place to get cold cuts, especially their roast beef.

Fefe M.

Yelp
Love this neighborhood grocer! They have all the staples you need plus a good selection of specialty and gourmet items-sandwiches, good meat and cheese, etc. Really nice people. Stopped in over the weekend and picked up some Queen Charlotte's Pimento Cheese and was offered a glass of wine to go with it. How can you beat that?

Kristen L.

Yelp
Love this place. Prices are a little higher, but worth being able to walk to a nice little market if you live in the neighborhood. The people there are awesome. Best tuna salad I've ever had. Haven't had the BBQ yet, but I have had tourists stop me for directions there so they could get some. A sweet mom and pop place. Some of you may have been fortunate to have met Mr. Burbage years ago. This is a special place.

Thomas L.

Yelp
This is one of the few places I walk into and the owners know me by name, not because I have been there a 100 times, but because they are nice people who serve their neighborhood well. I mostly go for their low-cost sandwiches and deli meats, but their sausage is the titz. Italian, hot, breakfast, andouille, even gator.. if it has a casing they have it and they're delicious.

Byron H.

Yelp
This local legendary mom and pop grocery needs an updated review. We are in town for our third visit this year and happened upon this great place. New owners who are doing a great job keeping this corner grocery going strong. They took over in October 2013 and business has been great, they say. We had the nicest conversation with the owner, her mom, and another employee (who makes killer mac and cheese, they said). The previous owner comes in and still makes the sausages for them (sweet Italian and chorizo this week). BBQ sandwiches on certain days. Lots of good looking things in their cold cases (meats, chicken salad, soups, French toast casserole, etc). Such nice people! If you're in town, go visit and help support friendly, LOCAL merchants.

Yelp
Try some of Al's Hot Sausage...Woooo Hoooo...
