The 2022 Chicago Gourmet Hamburger Hop Winner Came From O’Hare - Eater Chicago

"The Best Burger award went to Corey Grupe of Burger Federation. The restaurant is located in Terminal 3 of Chicago O’Hare International Airport. His entry, 'The Little Miss Figgy Burger' combined sweet and creamy camembert and fig fondue with a bit of heat from bacon vindaloo and pickled pepper relish." - Samantha Nelson

Awesome service. Excellent food. Our waitress was super friendly and helpful.

I had a truly disappointing experience here due to the behavior of one of the staff members, Timberly (the woman wearing a mask in the photo). I asked a calm, simple question — whether they had gluten-free buns and if they were available during breakfast. Instead of receiving a clear answer, I was met with open hostility. Timberly was shockingly rude, raising her voice and speaking to me in a condescending tone over what should’ve been a routine inquiry. It turns out they do offer gluten-free buns, but only during lunch. That’s fine — but there is absolutely no excuse for the way she chose to speak to a customer who was simply trying to understand their options. This kind of unprofessionalism is unacceptable and reflects poorly on management. It left me feeling uncomfortable and frankly unwelcome. If you’re someone who expects basic courtesy when asking about dietary needs, I’d suggest being cautious — or at least hoping Timberly isn’t on shift.

We have never been treated so rudely at a restaurant. Apparently they close at 8 pm on Saturday nights. We were told they were no longer waiting tables but could order at the register. We did and went up to the counter when the food was ready. There were diners eating at tables so we sat down to quickly eat. The extremely rude old woman at the counter came over to us and loudly screamed to get out. We were getting condiments for our fries and sandwiches. Other patrons who were already eating were also told to get out. Unbelievable! Sadly at that part of the airport gates L 20 to 24 the only other option is Starbucks. The good was very good. Time to hire a new counter person who treats people with respect.

Google
Friendly and appropriately fast sitdown service this time. The Chicken Schnitzel sandwich tasted like more than just fried chicken and the side salad was good. The one normal can of beer I got cost 6x its retail price, though (no price on the menu). Last time processing the check was slow, but it was also between meals.

Google
Maybe a lesson in managing my expectations, but for the better. Went in thinking this was going to be a run of the mill stop and grab at an airport, fuel I would immediately forget. Instead it was actually so incredibly delicious. Chicago sliced beef on a burger kinda freaking rocks. Or maybe I was just famished. Don't care, it hit the spot, I'd come back if I fly through that ORD gate again.

Google
They said 10 minutes til the burger was ready. They were right. The burger was very good. I thought it was pricey but hey, you are at the airport. Excellent service. Polite. And a great burger. 🏆

Google
I've been to this place several times when I fly through Chicago and their food is great but I just had the worst experience. There was limited seating available so we ordered our food to go. Waited about 5 minutes for the order and some tables opened up. There was space for 8 people to sit and eat. My partner and I took a table for two and the cashier says we cannot dine in because our order was to go. RIDICULOUS! Rude service and I will not be back here nor recommend this place to coworkers.

Google
Tried the Classic Chicago Dog, and was pleasantly surprised by how massive this hot dog was. Pretty good bang for your buck in an airport. The only downside was that the bun fell apart at my first attempt of picking it up, but I suppose that's why it was served with a fork and knife. The service was very timely, which was much appreciated as I had a flight to catch.

Yelp
If you all travel at all, you've been stuck in an airport layover! This trip I find myself at O'Hare for 4.5 hours so lunch was on the menu. I felt badly being at a burger joint and ordering chicken, but the schnitzel sandwich sounded pretty good - and it was. Crispy, white meat chicken cooked all the way through with a nice sauce and side salad with a zippy vinaigrette dressing. The bun, an underrated part of any sandwich, was a nice soft brioche. The service a bit slow but the place was filling up fast and there appeared to be only one server. As far as ambiance goes: while it's a sit down spot, it's in the airport, so it's loud and crowded, something you should accept in an airport eatery. Over by the quieter (relatively) L gates, it's a nice spot for a quick bite. The

Yelp
Busy busy but good food. The little miss figgy won burger of the year so I had to try it. It came out quickly with tater tots. The bun could have been toasted, but the patty and brie/gouda was a good match. It is at an airport with lots of foot traffic with limited seats, so keep a lookout for seats.
google avatar

Padma A.

Yelp
I got the the cod sandwich which was mediocre in taste even for airport food. Service was quick which was good because its an airport establishment .
google avatar

Jason L.

Yelp
The service is horrible. The place is dirty and trash sits on the bar. The bar tender was surprised when I said I did not want to eat after waiting 20 minutes to order! This is an airport. The staff sits around watching TV on their phones. This place is infuriating and and horrible.

Tom L.

Yelp
Stopped by for lunch on a long layover at O'Hare. Great burger!!! Rise and Shine burger was awesome. Thank you!
google avatar

Julie O.

Yelp
Burger Federation is a good choice for lunch if you have time at O'Hare. It's not that the food takes long to prepare, it's that Burger Federation is all the way at the end of the L concourse near L21. That said, not as much people traffic and can generally get a seat. The food is great and amply portioned. Burgers are good! They have non burger offerings as well. It's airport priced, but if you are eating at the airport, this is a legit good option and value. It's smaller, but cute and clean. Staff is helpful.

Joan L.

Yelp
the best Chicago dog ever!! Bargain at the price. Wonderful cashier who tracked me down with my forgotten debit card. Nice seating area. Will definitely stop here again!!

Yelp
I was not really happy, I thought the burger I ordered was poorly prepared and messy, the egg that came on it was barely cooked, it was clear and runny. IT came with tots that looked like the cook accidentally dumped the entire salt shaker on them, they were uneatable. I should have sent them back but I had been flying all night and I was too tired to complain. The guy working the room was mostly talking with friends, loudly singing, and goofing off. I had to ask to be seated, asked to order, asked for my drink he forgot, which was never refilled, and asked for my bill. Then he comes out after me for getting a small tip for his bad service to complain about the tip. Sorry, but if you want a good tip then earn it. I'm generally very generous with tips, but I have no problem giving a bad tip or no tip for bad service.

Yelp
Super fast and convenient location in the airport. I ate the turkey sandwich with a side salad and it was super good!
google avatar

Yelp
If you are trapped at ORD and want a vegan burger, then look no further. They have you covered. Friendly and fast. If you are in L, and vegan, then try this out.
google avatar

Yelp
I had higher expectations for this place, just based on the naming of the food. And the ingredients all sounded NUMMY... But somehow, it just didn't translate. The food was pretty bland. The service was quick and I liked that they used pagers, so you're not sittin' there waiting for your food. Once I tasted the food, it kind of dropped into a fast food restaurant atmosphere. And since it was AIRPORT food, it wasn't cheap! A bit disappointing for me...
google avatar

Lita G.

Yelp
My expectations for airport food are always low, but gotta say this spot surprised me. Service was prompt and courteous, and the portions are huge. I got the Chicago Classic burger with a mixed salad as a side, and the burger was quite well prepared, still pink in the middle and with a tasty sauce, and the "side" salad was humongous! Yeah, the menu doesn't have many options, and only 4 beers on tap (including Bud light so it's like 3 beers on tap), but for being at the end of a dead terminal in the airport I am impressed.

Cynthia A.

Yelp
FOOD ALLERGIES- this establishment DOES NOT ACCOMMODATE for food allergies. when I asked the person taking orders about the "Tots" she was clearly annoyed to be answering. I asked if they were gluten free she said yes - no wait... no.... ducked her head into the register cabinet, pulled out a mask and then proceeded to say everything has gluten. the rolls, the tots, frites... our menu does not say food is gluten free! theres nothing here gluten free! DISGUSTING ATTITUDE - work on your people skills and be more understanding of peoples situation!

Yelp
Wait 9 minutes are the bar before being acknowledged. Then not even " I'm sorry". Terrible!

Yelp
I work at the airport, and I like to treat myself once a week to the "airport-priced" food at one of the many restaurants here at O'Hare. Tonight I went to Burger Federation in L concourse. It was crowded. I was going to sit, but there was nowhere to do so, so I decided to take away. Earlier in the week, I looked up the menu to decide what I wanted. The 1st item on the menu, Little Miss Figgy, sounded delicious. I ordered my meal, the burger and fries. I waited about 15 minutes. When I was "buzzed" to get my burger, the lady with whom I placed my order said, "BLT." I said, "No. I ordered a Little Miss Figgy." She then began to get unreasonably nasty and accusatory. We actually argued back and forth about this for a good 3 or 4 minutes. I thought with such a nasty personality, she should work for TSA. ;) Never an apology, never offered to remake it, nothing. Then I think she was accusing me of stealing or something, because she mentioned that the figgy burger cost more than I paid. Finally, a gentleman helping move the food out of the kitchen had them make me my burger. The burger itself had potential to be good...BUT the bun was cold, like it was just pulled from the fridge. The spicy overpowered the sweet instead of complementing it. The jam and sauce puddled in the plate. The fries were cold and were the bits that are in the bottom of the basket. If all these things were corrected, it would be wonderful! Customer service, though, ruined this for me. Considering 1/2 my job is recommending places to eat to the passengers at O'Hare, it is really unfortunate that I will have to warn people to avoid this establishment.
google avatar

Sia Z.

Yelp
I had the Viktor's burger with fries. The meat quality wasn't that good for the price, despite the lower standard of being airport food. I'd stick with one of the fastfood chains instead. Service was fast once you get their attention at the bar.

Christopher L.

Yelp
This place is super clean, the staff is very hospitable and the food is amazing. I didn't get a chance to drink at the bar but they have a great selection!
google avatar

Frank W.

Yelp
The service was horrible, the bartender was literally hostile toward customers the manager Micheal seemed held hostage by the bartender likely because no one wants to work there. The food took 30 minutes to be provided only after asking the kitchen where it was. The ambiance was honestly the worst airport dining experience I've had in 25 years of business travel.
google avatar

Titus V.

Yelp
This small restaurant is located at O'Hare airport in Chicago. The burgers were ok, not sure it was why award winning. You will definitely pay airport prices. I don't think I will visit again, as the setup is confusing. The employees aren't very professional.

Mark W.

Yelp
Had the Little Miss figgy burger. Weird name, but it was a good burger, didn't need anything added. I liked the fresh fries here too, wasn't expecting them to be good at an airport.
google avatar

Kenny D.

Yelp
I was pleasantly surprised with this place. The menu said the little miss figgy burger was "award winning" and I'm thinking "yeah right, the only thing worse than mall food is airport food!" Boy was I wrong! The burger was well made, and the pickled pepper remoulade sauce was very tasty. The fries were above average, and the service, while far from great, was certainly adequate enough (not overly attentive but responsive once you got their attention). Well done airport burger joint!
google avatar

Lance F.

Yelp
We had the Chicago Classic and the boneless wings. The wings were good and the burger, with angus and Italian beef, was excellent. Service was prompt and efficient. The environment is clean, well lit, quiet and calm, with generous seating. This is a great choice for families. Pricing is very reasonable for an airport. So glad we ate here--it is worth the walk.
google avatar

Cristina L.

Yelp
I didn't have a burger here but had a tasty breakfast and lovely tropical mimosa. I was most impressed by the great and prompt service especially after slogging through airports. My meal was a good, filling portion and kept me fueled through the rest of my travel day, plus, it was nice to sit and dine and not eat food out of a bag.

Daniel A.

Yelp
If you're by terminal 3, gate L then stop into this place and grab a burger. The food is great, and I highly recommend the Chicago Classic, a burger and beef combo. It is in the airport so there isn't a ton of room to sit down. They hand craft and make these burgers from scratch, so it's a higher quality than your typical fast food joint. Great place to grab a bit if you're flying around dinner time.

Pedro S.

Yelp
Italian beef was good and got quick service good beer options at the bar. very clean restaurant, good music and had the game on

Mary C.

Yelp
Beware of this location. I ordered two patty melts and just asked to sub the kind of cheese that came by default. My wife ordered the exact same thing. These were supposed to come with a bunch of toppings and come on multigrain bread but what we received were two plain patties on a bun, no toppings. I asked them to change them out and give what we ordered. After much fanfare they did, but they only made one of them . I hadn't eaten all day so I just sucked it up at that point and ate the $20 plain patty on a bun. They claimed the issue was that everyone there was nervous because they were having an inspection, which concerning on its own. They indicated I could have a refund but needed the manager to do so and they couldn't find the manager. I needed to get to my flight so I just left. I'm annoyed that I paid that much money for something I didn't actually order, but I'm even more annoyed that they appear incapable of processing basic information. This item is labeled as "vegan" but they never, in the four burgers they made for us by the time I gave up on getting the correct order, gave us anything with the vegan bun. It didn't matter because we aren't vegan, but consumers have a right to receive the food that they order. If you have allergies, proceed with caution. Yikes.
google avatar

Bruce S.

Yelp
Let me be honest, I am not a fan of the food offerings at O'Hare. We're one of the great food cities but we don't get it right at the airport. I will say the burgers here are ok but my favorite thing to order is the Baja omelette for breakfast which is a Mexican style it also comes with tater tots and bread. It's my go to for a breakfast here at the airport and I get them to give me Tabasco on the side.
google avatar

Jack G.

Yelp
The best item I tried was the premade parfait - which was "meh". Sandwich had soggy bread, limp lettuce, etc. All the characteristics of subpar food. The only reason for the second star is the classic authentic Chicago-style indifferent service. And even that was subpar.
google avatar

Caitlyn R.

Yelp
Terrible terrible terrible ... terrible ... this place has no shame to rip off the unfortunate people who are stuck in terminal L in the Chicago airport! The prices of the place are more than ridiculous probably three times the price of a normal airport and they can do so because terminal L is no where near civilization. For example a double house gin and soda water is 26 dollars and a small can of ultra is 9 dollars. So expensive they don't put drink prices on the menu. The food is subpar at best a little more affordable though but the deriving size of for a small child. So basically you're paying an adult meal norMal to high price for a kids meal. The airport is terrible in general but this terminal and this place are probably the worst!

Scott M.

Yelp
Ignorant employee wouldn't let me use a chair at the ohare location with 1 customer at any table.
google avatar

Todd K.

Yelp
Good food. Nicest staff ever. I didn't order much but writing this to give props to the staff as I watch them interact with guests. They really care. Good job!
google avatar

Phil N.

Yelp
Empty for a reason. Tried going here since the only other option in this terminal extension is Starbucks. Kitchen is closed. Bar only. It's 8:25am. Maybe not time to get a cocktail or beer. The bartender (despite no one seated anywhere in this place) refused to let me sit there cuz I had a Starbucks coffee. Dude, ever think to ask if I was going to get anything? Wow. I woulda tried a burger for breakfast but it wasn't an option. Next time, just keep your gates closed rather than offend people.
google avatar

April A.

Yelp
Found this place at the airport. Giving it at four because they have the impossible burger and vegan options are greatly appreciated. The burger with everything else was pretty good, but wasn't necessarily amazing. It seemed that the french fries had Parmesan on them but didn't realize till after we ordered, which was really disappointing. They should just be plain to let people who don't eat dairy can still get them.
google avatar

Carlos S.

Yelp
I really enjoyed the food at this airport restaurant. The service was a little grumpy but the food was good. I ordered the chicken schnitzel burger and it was rather good. Hot, well presented and large portion. It's a crispy fried chicken patty with black pepper lemon aioli, arugula and parmesan. My side of choice was the frittes. They have a hint of rosemary, and sea salt, parmesan and federation sauce. Good.

Fred C.

Yelp
I was not expecting decent food in an airport, but the burgers here are only a few dollars more than in MacDonalds so I thought I would give it a try. I ordered the Chicago Classic and was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. The beef patty was tender and juicy but what really won me over was the tangy Chicago sauce. Not sure what it was composed of but it was yummy.
google avatar

Kennedy S.

Yelp
I can't help but laugh at this. This is what the order of frittes looks like. There's supposed to be rosemary and Parmesan on them. I thought maybe you just couldn't see the toppings, so I tasted them to be sure. They were 100% plain french fries. Once realizing this, I returned to the cashier, Torri, and was super nice about asking if they forgot to top my fries. I showed her the cup and she half looks at it and shrugs it off saying, "yeah that's them." It wasn't worth the argument to me, so I apologized and walked away. The cherry on top: the bag had three packets of ketchup, no federation sauce, like the menu says it would. I shouldn't have expected much from Torri. She didn't smile once our entire interaction and clearly has terrible customer service skills. So here I am... laughing at the fact I paid $5.58 for a small cup of fries and 3 ketchup packets.

Ryan S.

Yelp
Meh, very disappointing burger. Dry patty, very little cheese. Not worth $19. I know it's an airport but geese
google avatar

Mallory S.

Yelp
Was so excited to see vegan cheese and impossible whopper. When I got to the counter they told me that none of the buns are vegan! Why bother having vegan meat and vegan cheese but no vegan bread? So weird.
google avatar

Amy H.

Yelp
I'm not entirely sure if I'm reviewing the right restaurant, as the Burger Federation I went to today was near gate L22, but this is the only Yelp page I could find. Gates L20-24 for American Airlines is a pretty secluded area, and this restaurant was the only option for lunch (besides Starbucks). I ordered the French Connection burger with fries, which came out to be about $15. I thought it was pretty steep for a fast food-esque place, especially since I know there is a McDonald's nearby, but I decided to give it a go. The French Connection burger was honestly delicious! Although the burger wasn't that big, there was a good amount of roast beef and brie in the burger, and it was quite juicy. The french fries (also not a big portion) were thinly cut and crispy. I'd say my airport lunch was definitely satisfactory. But I'm taking one star off for the service; the cashier was not very nice and exuded the passive-aggressive I-don't-want-to-be-here vibe.
google avatar

Brian F.

Yelp
Stopped in here on April 13th, 2019... the day of the April blizzard. Tons of flights delayed and cancelled, so a great time to sit and eat! There are some great and strange burger creations here... including the additions of roast beef or Italian beef... and you can also get chicken, turkey, hot dog, or fish as your protein. I had the Rise and Shine, which (not surprisingly) adds an egg and bacon. Though overall it was a good burger, the patty was small for a $12 price tag. For comparison, its smaller than a standard burger at Red Robin... about the size of a McDonald's Quarter Pounder. The bun was soft and fresh, and the egg was cooked to perfection, but I'd probably opt for a different burger next time. The French Connection piqued my interest. The fries are skinny and cooked perfectly, and they come in an amount that's just enough to leave you wanting more. Last, but certainly not least, the people who worked here were friendly and helpful in my ultimate burger selection. Not sure if I'll be in this far off branch of this terminal again, but this was a much welcomed place for a pre-flight meal.
google avatar

Mark T.

Yelp
I grabbed breakfast here and was a great experience. The restaurant is a typical airport joint --nothing too special to report there, but the service was great. It was slow, and they were clearly understaffed, but the guys working rocked it. The food was alright. Frozen sausage, decent, fresh eggs, and okay tater tots. The toast was fantastic, and the coffee just meh. The prices were actually very reasonable, especially for an airport spot. There is plenty of seating inside and has a bar if that's your thing. Overall a decent experience, and though the food was tasty, I'd rather not have frozen crap. I'll likely skip next time.
google avatar

Gah P.

Yelp
Was greeted immediately. The burger was delicious. I will definitely be stopping here again when my connecting flight allows me to.
google avatar

Matt H.

Yelp
I liked the upscale look of the airport restaurant and the fact that they had a breakfast option burger with an egg. Service was friendly and attentive. I don't like runny whites on my eggs and I don't think that is unusual. But there it came, sunny side up egg without a cooked white. I scraped it off best I could and rolled with it. It was a good burger beyond that. I got orange juice as well and it was either fresh squeezed or a good quality orange juice at least. That is always a treat. I would possibly return, but not for a breakfast burger with egg.
google avatar

Joshua W.

Yelp
This is located at Gate L22 in Ohare's newest concourse. Air quality is the best in the airport here. I had the rise and shine burger, delicious! Also they have plugins (outlets, receptacles, usb) with the community table, bar and bench seating. Full bar service, sit and eat, European stand n eat tables available or grab and go. First Burger Federation in the USA.
google avatar

Anthony C.

Yelp
As one of the only places to grab a decent bite of food near gate L20-21 in O'Hare, I have ate here a few times. I do prefer their breakfast over burgers, though if you enjoy burgers they do have a unique selection. It can get busy as there aren't many options in this part of the airport, but you can order it to go and take it to a seat in the concourse. Portions are always big, and the tots are the way to go for your potato choice.
google avatar

Peter L.

Yelp
The only dining option in the terminal (L20-L24). I ordered the Cesar Salad to go. It was made fresh, with grilled chicken and a zesty dressing. I was quite pleased, given there are no other dining options in the area. Prep time for my meal was 5-10 minutes. Why the three stars? Meal prices are beyond exorbitant for the quantity of food provided. I spent $17 and change for what would equate to a side salad sized container. Don't get me wrong - it was good, but had I had more time, would have walked to the main terminal.
google avatar

Dorothy J.

Yelp
I had this place while eating for a flight at Chicago Airport. Not sure the cheeseburger I had but it was supposed to have beef on it. I opted out for that and just had a regular cheeeeburger. I really enjoyed it. Loved the spicier sauce they put on it, gave it a little kick. Food was freshly cooked and hot! Going to have to look up where some other locations are, cause I really enjoyed it and would love to go back!
google avatar

Miguel M.

Yelp
One of the best burgers I've had and at a reasonable price for the airport. I hope I get this gate again because this places is so worth it!! The burger was amazing! The food also came out very fast. There's a McDonald's close to here(which is mor expensive than a regular McDonald's) and is usually very packed but this places is a little bit more but way better quality and not as packed.

Linda S.

Yelp
Three words: 1. Scrumptious 2. Haven 3. Fair price (okay 4 words) We split a huge goat cheese, portobello omelet with perfect Parmesan tater tots, toast, and a perfect 1000-island-like gentle side dressing. Service was attentive, not intrusive even though we stayed a while. It was fairly priced - around $12. And for a delightful surprise- they have the Impossible burger. This is not your grandfather's airport food. It's worth a trip to Terminal 3 Gate L22. I know we will go out of our way to come here next time we are at O'Hare. Yum!
