15 Illustrious Classic Dallas Restaurants

"Dallas loves burgers, and Burger House has the ringing endorsement of staying open since 1951. Visit the original location near SMU or two others on Mockingbird and Addison. It’s been making burgers the same way for decades — you don’t mess with a winning recipe." - Eater Staff

Google
A classic Dallas burger spot with incredible fries! Burger House near SMU is a quaint, no-frills burger joint that’s been around since the 1950s—and it definitely lives up to its reputation. The burger was solid and satisfying, but the real standout was the fries. They’re seasoned with a special blend that’s super tasty and totally addictive. It’s a popular spot, especially with students and locals, so expect a bit of a wait and know that seating can be limited. Parking is also a challenge, but if you can snag a spot and are willing to be patient, it’s well worth the visit for a great bite of Dallas burger history.

Google
Really cool old school burger joint. Service is super friendly, food is great. Fries are excellent. Definitely recommend for a step away from the blah franchise restaurants that abound.

Doris Davis

Google
Friendly place for families and friends. Quick service. Fries with seasoning was amazing. Good burgers. The bun might be a bit too large/hefty for the burger size but is very well dressed w L, T, P. There’s a reason this place has such longevity. It’s a well run operation. And the prices seem like a throwback. $6.95 burger, $3.95 fries, $5.95 shakes which I’ll try next time. Parking not easy given construction on the plaza.

Google
Outstanding old school burger joint. There's a whole lot of options in the menu to satisfy any craving. Great chili, hotdogs and chili dogs. The front of the business is facing a busy street, making it hard to get in and out of the limited parking. Once inside tour greeted by lots of pictures of their guests. The staff is welcoming and attentive. Overall definitely recommend this joint.

Google
Simple burgers and fries made the way you want with a unique house seasoning-consistent and really good every time we come. The chocolate malt is one of the best in Dallas. The vibes harken back to the 1950’s when it originally opened. The service is direct and efficient. The price is very reasonable.

Google
I had been hearing about this place almost since I moved to DFW. It lives up to the hype. Very juicy burger that’s a generous size.

Google
Food is so good. I’m very picky when it comes to classic foods like burgers, hot dogs and chili cheese fries. However, these guys knocked it out of the park. Great service, amazing prices and even better food. Most definitely hit the spot for chili cheese fries. The large portion was unbelievable and made me regret getting a double cheeseburger to go with it.

Google
Got take out from here and unfortunately had a very bad meal. Paid for bacon and jalapeño on our two burgers and they were missing. Grilled onions were missing. The burger patties felt like they heated were frozen, no caramelization, very soft. The bun was also falling apart from the sauce and the lettuce tasted a bit old. The fries were soft and then the onion rings (which tasted standard and store-bought) were also soft no crisp at all. Sister got mad at me for trying the burgers from here and I regret it too. Quite unfortunate.

Yelp
The service was super quick, and the burger was made fresh. When we're in the area and craving a nice and simple burger, this will undoubtedly be our spot. Also, shout out to The Daytripper on YouTube - this is how we found this gem.

Yelp
First time at the Burger House and it was great. When you arrive you can tell this place is a Dallas staple. Always busy, great burgers and the tater tots were perfect. It was fun eating in their small space by the kitchen and made it feel very NYC. Staff is friendly and food is served fairly quickly. We will return.
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent little burger spot. Very tasty seasoning on both the fires and the burger. You have to ask for refill on drink which can be a pain if they are busy but still a really good option for a quick burger
google avatar

James T.

Yelp
Dubble cheese burger is awesome. A good old school burger not too thin and crisp. Also not too thick so a dubble burger is perfect. Lettuce tomato onion and mustard like God intended.

Yelp
Burger house is a classic! We love this place. The food is always very consistent and quick to be served. They are very nice in there. This was the crispiest Dr. pepper I've ever had! All the decor inside takes me right back to my glory days. Stop by for a great meal!

Yelp
A great classic burger spot. This is the original location that's been opened since 1951. The environment is authentic and comfortable and everyone there was happy to be there. Great for a family dinner or casual date night. The staff we ordered from was friendly and efficient. The double cheeseburger was juicy with the perfect combination of flavors. The fry seasoning was so tasty. The chocolate shake tastes like a classic favorite. Love it!!

Yelp
Amazing amazing amazingly amazing... first timer and Love every moment of the experience

Yelp
Small neighborhood hole in the wall across from SMU. Friendly staff. Everyone seemed to know everyone on the day we went. There are about 4 benches inside, a bar pick up and a few tables out back on the patio. Definitely a lot of nostalgia here. I imagine many get that homey feeling but the food just didn't cut it. I was expecting a nice burger and fries but instead I got tacos. I took my order to go but all I could smell was tacos. This must be the secret ingredient. Taco seasoning in the patty and on the fries. I was eating a burger but it smelled and tasted like tacos. Was confusing and not fun for me. Quickly ditched both and I'll pass on any future visits.

Yelp
Their burgers are great usually Their fries, however, are not. Usually undercooked limp sad excuses for french fries...always insist on crispy fries here unless you like soft squishy potatoes
google avatar

Yelp
This place is SO GOOD!!! Service is always 10/10 Also they offer a veggie burger which is nice! Only fast food place I know that serves genuinely good veggie burgers in dallas.
google avatar

Yelp
Burger House feels like a great, local burger joint! Love going by for a good burger and shake.

Yelp
Just ordered lunch from here and so disappointed. By far the worst burger I've ever had out here. I ordered a cheese burger with bacon. When I got my food, it was a bun with meat on it, nothing else. No lettuce, no tomatoe or onion, no ketchup or mustard, no bacon. Just bread and a patty. My lunch is not even edible. Also, thanks for the super overly salted fries. Don't order from here, it's crap.

Yelp
I used to drive by here all the time but never stopped. Recently i watched an episode of daytrippin on youtube and thought i would give it a go. I went around 1 or 2 in the afternoon so it wasn't really packed or anything. Just went with a basic double burger with bacon, cheese, mustard, ketchup, lettus and pickle, with fried and a drink to round it all out. Ill discribe it as basic to say the least. Fries tasted like a salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic mix which wasnt to bad, just think im more of a salt on my fries kind of guy. The burger had a pretty basic flavor profile on it and wasnt the best i have ever had but i can see the apeal to some. But what really got me was the price of everything, as it approached near 20 dollars for the whole meal. Its a pretty small pace with some outdoor seating. Pigions were getting inside while i was there, not very appetizing if you ask me.

Yelp
I love an old school classic burger joint. Nothing fancy, just your cheeseburger and fries with a shake/soda. Walked in and this place was jumping, super busy, people sitting everywhere. Great sign! Ordered a few cheeseburgers, with some customizations. One of the burgers, came out completely wrong, the other two were fine. Their famous fries are solid. Kind of has a chili flavor to them. Overall, decent spot!

Yelp
Wow.. how have I not been here in all my time in Dallas!? This place was too good to not try!! Although there was a 25 minute wait (and now I understand why), the wait was well worth it! We had a cheeseburger (grilled onions, everything on it), chili cheeseburger (mustard only) , and famous fries. The burgers were just the right amount of greasy, the bread was the perfect texture of not too soft, and the veggies tasted so so fresh. I loved that I could ask to get the onions grilled, would totally recommend! The chili cheeseburger was your classic, messy, greasy bundle of delicious. If you're a chili lover, it's a must. The famous fries had a very flavorful seasoning on them (which you could actually buy along with T-shirt's). Lastly, I really liked that the entire kitchen was open concept and I could see the employees cooking and putting everything together. Businesses really add trust within their customers with this kind of transparency. The employees were very very hardworking and kind! I cannot wait to come back here :) thank you, Burger House!!

Yelp
I hadn't intended to have lunch here but got stuck in an endless construction loop detour so, decided to relieve the stress and calm the oncoming hanger. This original location opened in 1951 and it is almost unchanged. The food is probably unchanged from that time also. This is a classic old-school burger joint that is going, going gone. As a matter of fact, it is hard to believe they have survived here this long. Their postage stamp size piece of real estate is worth a fortune and I wouldnt be surprised if its gone any day. So, Im glad I stopped here and enjoyed a cheeseburger all the way. The "Famous Seasoned Fries" are way too salty which I had forgotten. Don't misunderstand, they are delicious but, I don't eat this much salt anymore so avoid the fries if you don't want heavy salt!!! I also enjoyed a chocolate malt which was superb in the fashion of back in the day. If you havent checked out an old place in a while or need grounding in some childhood memories of simpler times (and prices) check out Burger House. You wil be glad you did Go

Yelp
Fast and yummy I will be coming back soon Chili Cheeseburger. Best Burger place must go place

Frank S.

Yelp
Saltiest food I've ever eaten. Couldn't even taste the burger, just tasted salt. The tots just had clumps of the seasoning. Which i like my food well seasoned but they weren't mixed right
google avatar

Lauri M.

Yelp
I tried this place yesterday and it was good! I definitely will be coming back here to try more of their menu. The fries were my favorite.

Nancy G.

Yelp
Have Loved Burger House Hillcrest for years. I remember it's founder well. It's always been a great stop for burgers and fries. I'm happy it's survived all these years and wish it many

Austin H.

Yelp
Really good burger made the same way every time! Their burgers are not going to blow you away, but you will never leave disappointed. From the burgers, fries with special seasoned salt and the milk shakes, they are all a hit! The building has a ton of character with customers who seem to have come in there their entire lives. Only negative is you need to eat your food there. The fries especially do not hold up after awhile so you need to eat them fresh. Other than that, this is my spot for a burger when I'm in Highland Park/Dallas!
google avatar

Carrie B.

Yelp
Doesn't look like much but really for a great burger that's often a sign of the place you want to be! Hole in the wall with limited seating but authentic grilled burgers at a great price. This is the real deal for a tasty burger with the toppings you want. Also offer shakes and malts and real cherry coke!

Ronnie B.

Yelp
So I drove a nice distance to try this spot. actuality made it there a hour before openig. So I waited for a 30 minutes respectfully. But I seen a customer walk in which show the doors were open. So I waited to see if the customer would be service which the lady was. I proceeded to walk into the establishment as she was swiping her card. Now I'm looking at the menu yo see what I wanted. Then one of the workers proceeds to tell me the establishment is not open while service one customer! It confused me but I walked out and will never return!! Hate to make it about race but they served the nice white lady and shoo away the brown man.‍‍‍ Bad way to start a relationship. If it is closed for one it should be closed for all no exception! Hope y'all do better in the future with other customer!

Jerry R.

Yelp
Literally writing this while I still have a salt taste still in my mouth. So got my son just a hamburger and I got the chili cheeseburger. Son finished his cause he was hungry I couldn't cause it was just too dang salty. I like salt but even that was just too salty. Guess they're living off the nostalgia because that was the worst burger I've ever had. Definitely will not be back. That was pitiful.
google avatar

Cole A.

Yelp
If Spider-Man was a burger place it would be here.. idk but that just makes sense to me. Gimmie a chili glizz and a cherry coke and gtfo of my way, I'm definitely hungover 95% of the time I'm in here

Yelp
Amazing burger restaurant located in the University Park part of Dallas! Came here growing up after basketball games as a kid and haven't stopped since. From the burgers to the fries to the shakes, everything here has a unique taste that you won't find at other burger joints. They're definitely known for their seasoning salt, which I still buy separately to take home with me to this day. They also have a great chicken sandwich for people looking for something else than just a burger. One thing I will say is parking is limited and a bit crowded sometimes. Overall though, I'd definitely recommend this place to anyone in the Dallas area!
google avatar

Caroline S.

Yelp
Neat little local burger joint! We called ahead and ordered 2 cheeseburgers, chili cheese fries and a regular fry. The fries were the best! The chili cheese fries were pretty standard and good but I would have loved some really good ranch with them. We ordered a side of ranch and all they had was Kraft ranch packets, which was just okay. The regular fries had their special seasoning on them. I wish all fries came with this seasoning! Our cheeseburgers were good, but not great. Even though they were 'all the way', they were pretty dry and the buns were a little dry as well. If I could order again, I would ask for more toppings and ketchup or mustard on the side to add to the burger or maybe a chili cheese burger. If I was in the area again, I'd be back for their fries and a milkshake!
google avatar

Torri H.

Yelp
Really solid burger, one that I probably couldn't resist getting whenever I was in the area. They put their house seasoning on it which was really good but a tad on the salt side. If you don't like a lot of salt then you should tell them light on the seasoning.
google avatar

Yelp
Classic all-American burger stand. Double cheeseburger, the old fashioned way with mustard, pickles, onions, is perfect balance of meat, cheese, and spice. The sesame seed bun is a nice final touch to finish off a delicious treat. Excellent. Highly recommended.

Suzy S.

Yelp
W burger house frfr. Burgers bussin bussin. W ritz fo' sho'. Go here if u got W RIZZ.

Lucas T.

Yelp
Been coming here since I was 8 best burger in Dallas no competition awesome atmosphere and a really cool look on the inside. Fries and shakes are also delicious.

Paul S.

Yelp
Unfortunately, Our burgers were smashed, asked for Cheeseburger with lettuce tomatoes pickles lettuce and onions, The second cheese burger with out onions. Our burgers were smashed down meat was dry and hardly a pattie, squeeshie tomatoe hardly any lettuce four if that pieces of diced onions maybe a few diced pieces of lettuce, It was my first time. DISAPPOINTED. I've read your responses to simular complaints but I'm sure nothing changes. You'll keep on putting out sub par if that. Would i come back No.... McDonald's/ Jack in The Box/ Wendy's are better options.
google avatar

Gene W.

Yelp
I saw this on TV as a great burger place. This food is terrible, unless you love salt. They put a season salt on everything that overwhelming saltiness drove me crazy. Stopped eating burger after half couldn't take anymore. Fries were awful without something to cut the salt. Even messed up perfectly good onion rings. Chocolate malt was very good but if you want meal I would make sure to make sure to ask for season salt on side. Ruins everything.
google avatar

Nicole L.

Yelp
The Original and the best! Not only is everything delicious but the service is amazing, friendly, efficient and genuine. Time and time again the food is consistent, hot and fresh (I'm partial to the cheeseburgers, fries and chocolate malts). I hope they never stop serving the best burgers in town!
google avatar

Yitzhak O.

Yelp
When I worked at Southwestern Bell in this area we would eat here. There was a Grey haired gentleman that always waited on us. That was in the 80s and 90s. I wonder where he is now I'm sure he's retired. The burgers and fries are good and similar to Jake's. I live in Arlington and I must admit that I really enjoy Kincaid's in Fort Worth and Arlington.
google avatar

Amber M.

Yelp
Everyone I know adores Burger House. Maybe it's sentimental, maybe it's how you're supposed to feel but I find the experience just OK. The lines are long, the order takers aren't friendly, there's no waiting area," and the food isn't just OK. I'll go over to Keller's anyday before heading to Burger House.
google avatar

Yelp
Visited Jack's Burger House off of Hillcrest last night for national cheeseburger day. This place has been on my list of must-try restaurants for a while, because I'm a sucker for a restaurant with a neon sign. Damn. Burger House DID NOT disappoint. The no-frills establishment is serving up some delicious burgers and tasty sides. I had their double cheeseburger with all the fixin's and a side of famous fries. The cheeseburger had a perfect bun to beef ratio and just enough fixin's. Their fries are to DIE for with the amazing seasoning they put on them (there's even extra that you can put on if you'd like). It is a place that feels like home. In fact, I think my friends and I were the only first-timers there. Everyone else seemed to know the employees and know where to find things--like an old fashioned neighborhood joint. I definitely recommend Burger House for the great eats and nostalgic atmosphere. I know I'll be back!
google avatar

Melissa D.

Yelp
To the owner: Sorry my response is late but please don't discount it.. why did I choose to write a negative review when I've been coming for a few months without writing a positive review? Simply put, when my co workers told me they were getting sick from the salad a month prior to my order the first question I asked was "why hasn't anyone said anything?" I think my answer is obvious at this point, I felt compelled to sound the alarm. One other thing. If you want to earn my 5 star review, deliver good food time and time again. Only then will you acquire my good hearted review. I don't simply hand out 5 star ratings for my "one or two good meals". Its about a standard you set for yourself and continue to deliver. Don't take criticism to heart, learn from it. Good luck.

Yelp
Good old fashioned hole-in-the-wall burger place with well seasoned, beefy burgers and delicious old fashioned malts.
google avatar

Pete M.

Yelp
Always tasty and classic, since 1952...this has been one of the best fries and burgers in town, Pete

Kyle D.

Yelp
I have been here a couple of times now and it's safe to say I may never eat a McDonalds hamburger again. This place may not look like much but any restaurant that has been open since 1951 stays in business for a reason. The burgers are sinfully delicious and the fries have this perfect touch of seasoning on them. The staff is also very friendly and gets your order out quick every time. My recommendation is get the double cheeseburger with everything on it and add mayo and grilled onions (free). Your arteries will hate you for a while but the experience is worth it.

Kaitlyn A.

Yelp
My friends and I came here a couple of weekends ago to grab a bite to eat after SMU's football game. Staff was all incredibly friendly, food came out quick, and it was delicious! Definitely satisfied my burger craving! I will undoubtedly be back. The onion rings are a must!
google avatar

Evan H.

Yelp
Come here! This is one of the best burger places in my opinion. I've been going here for a few years, and it has always been great! I do with there was better seating, but otherwise it's good. Their classic cheeseburger is great! The meat is perfectly cooked, and the bun is good. Their fries are my favorite in my opinion. They are usually perfectly cooked, and the seasoning on them makes it great! Their tater tots are also great. My favorite shake there is the Oreo shake! It is just outstanding. The workers and chefs there are so kind and they have good stories. The prices are also good. Please come here!
google avatar

Robb H.

Yelp
Been going here since 1972 when a fellow freshman at SMU introduced me to Jack. The quality hasn't wavered over the last 48 years. I consider it the best overall burger in Dallas ... and it's been awarded that many times. The fries are also spectacular. The Hillcrest location has a special place in my heart as Jack was still working there when I took my oldest son there for his first time. He's even taken his daughter there and now she's a fan. The people are great and you get a real special feeling when you get the feel of the ordering lingo! . This is one of those places that when you finish your meal and you lean back feeling stuffed ..... you feel like you still want more. It's that good.
google avatar

Angela H.

Yelp
Ordered delivery: Chili cheese dog, onion rings and chicken strips were all delicious. Chili dog was def my fave. I'm not a huge salt fan. Onion rings and fries were a little salty but was able to dust them off to my liking. Wish DoorDash offered sauce options for chicken tenders! Will def order again :)
google avatar

Yelp
Burger House is an institution for a reason, it's simple but absolutely delicious! When I moved away from Dallas it was one of the places I knew I would miss most, I always make sure to try to visit when I am in town! I love that their burgers have thin patties and their fries are literal heaven and some of my favorite on earth! You can't forget their famous seasoned salt which I make sure stock up on to use at home. So good!

Bruce F.

Yelp
I have been going there on Hillcrest Ave for Seventy years. Truth. Love it. Other burgers are really good. But these are special to me. Good shakes wonderful fries. I actually have never eaten anything except cheeseburgers, fries, drinks. Mmmmmmmmmm
google avatar

Paul L.

Yelp
Ordered some salt online. A month later, no salt. Sent email, no response. Opened disputes with Pay Pal. No response. Called the store. "Owner is unavailable, he will call you back." No call. If you can't handle shipping a little bottle of salt you shouldn't be selling. Horrible. **Update** I was refunded my money after hounding them for several weeks. Hey, Burger House, you missed the opportunity to really wow me with your customer service by sending me a jar of salt anyway free of charge as an apology. You would've gained a customer for life and I would have sang your praises. I probably would have reordered many times. Well, too bad about that.
google avatar

Yelp
This is why I love this place "We will have 2 cheeseburgers all the way, 2 French fries A cherry coke for my lovely bride and an iced tea for the old man
