The First Location of Seattle Chain Burgermaster Is Closing After 73 Years - Eater Seattle

"The first location of the Burgermaster chain, embodying small-city grittiness, and known for its unique diner-like atmosphere. It was a gathering space for the community, famous for its breakfast offerings and regulars like Roy McCready." - Harry Cheadle

First time at Burgermaster, and I was very happy! Great burger and a great experience. I’ll definitely be back!

This location has been here since 1952 and the menu has stayed the same. They have good burgers and fries I usually dip my fries with their own blend of tartar sauce. Unfortunately this particular location will be closing as the lot has been sold to developers.

Here’s the translation: This is a breakfast spot well worth visiting. The flowers in the garden outside are well-maintained, adding to the pleasant atmosphere. The staff are all very friendly and efficient, and the food was served quickly! Thanks to Lucia, who found my lost credit card and promptly returned it to me at my table. I’m so grateful to her!

This is a harder review. The service and atmosphere were great. No complaints. The food, as tested by the health department, was excellent. But I have to say I was hoping for different than what I got. The bacon was thin, the burgers way over sauced, and the bun didn't hold up to the burger it held. The flavor was good enough. The fries were perfectly cooked and reasonably seasoned. I liked the condiment table as a separate station a lot. The coconut cream pie was over sweet, but the crust was perfect. It reminds me of a place that would have been THE spot to go in the 50s or 60s, and is now past it's prime, but still a viable option for the modern crowd. So yeah, it was worth a stop for the experience. But not good enough for me to want to go back.

Google
TL:DR - 7/10 - An oldie and goodie which give you a classic burger with enough of a quality feel to make you understand how inflation works and be okay. A perfect place to go if you want to indulge in a classic burger that is accompanied by pretty decent sides. All-in-all this won't fit the picky, snooty, or whiniest among us but it will sate a need or nostalgia. Worth the trip more than once.

This is for the U-Village location near the Laurelhurst area. With 5 family-owned Washington locations, this is the flagship location launched in 1952, and the only location that is dine-in and serves breakfast! Note: Breakfast is till 11am. Except for the breakfast sandwich. It is bus your own table. This is a place that goes back 38-years for me and has been one of the best places to dine anywhere. If the coffee is any indication of the food, (and it generally is) this is a solid place for breakfast AND a burger. I recommend the biscuits and gravy with bacon and hashbrowns for the sides. The Burgermaster with bacon is my go-to. Parking is out front, but it will fill up fast as this is a very popular spot. Service here is half self-serve with you having to bus your dirty dishes and utensils after your meal. The service is quick, friendly, and responsive. And the atmosphere is just as good. Most people are regulars who come with their family or bring generations of their family. Midas 5-stars for the quick service and delicious food.

NOT A DRIVE UP! GO INSIDE FOR SERVICE! Despite videos on line or the servers shirts that say turn on lights for service, it is not a drive up and you will not get service if your lights are on. Upon arriving and parking my car directly in front with my lights on, I waited 5 minutes before checking their website incase it said something different. Their website says right at the top of the menu please turn on lights for service, so we waited 10 more minutes to no avail. Then decided to look further and saw an order online option with a choice for “pickup, bring to my car”. When placing the order it asks for your cars make and model so they may bring it to you. The order was placed and said it would be brought out within 10 minutes. 10 minutes later nothing happened so we waited an extra 5 and STILL nothing happened. So I went in and said I had made an order for pick up and gave them my name they handed me my order and made the milkshakes fresh. Once sat down in the restaurant the food had clearly been sitting in the bag for a long time as the fries were cold and stale and the burger was lukewarm. I was incredibly disappointed that despite all of the signs on the menu, the staff shirts, and the online order option, they provided no “drive up service”. This especially irked me because if a disabled person were to try to make an order for pickup and have it brought directly to their car, this would not be possible. If they choose not to do drive up anymore that is completely their choice but they need to inform customers. Very disappointed.

Tasty burgers and excellent service! This location is a bit old, but the interior was definitely clean and our food was just as solid as other locations for Burgermaster.

Yelp
Before this location closes on the 23rd, my friends and I wanted to pay it a visit before then. It's all our first times here too which was pretty nice. Parking in this area gets full on times like a Saturday at 1pm, and they have their own parking lot. The inside feels like a casual fast-food chain restaurant with the run-down tables and chairs, and the floors that remind me of a high school cafeteria. I got the regular Burgermaster and a small strawberry shake, as they were out of the Tom and Jerry shake. Burger was disappointingly small though it was still decent. I also felt bummed that you had to order your fries separately as a side; I combed through the menu up at the counter and didn't see any sort of combo meal that you could get that would come with fries. For a small burger with your regular beef patty, lettuce, onions, cheese and tomatoes, it doesn't justify the $8 price tag on it. For other things, you get a number if you're dining in and servers bring your food up to you and also yell out your number. I found this method iffy since there was a TON of people seated inside when we arrived, but no one seemed to complain. Most other things were hands-off from the ketchup to the napkins to even the coffee. I'd probably get their other hopefully larger burgers the next time I come to another one of their locations, though the strawberry milkshake itself was very decent.

Yelp
Wanted to always try Burgermaster and it's only sit down location near UVill They are going to close this location down for good soon. Got the bacon master and the butterscotch milkshake So so good. Great customer service!

Yelp
This update reflects my dining experiences from 5/9/23, 9/6/24, and 1/15/25. With the announcements seen via Instagram and The Seattle Times, the UVillage location will close in late Feb 2025, it is key to dine onsite when feasible! Plentiful free parking for now...the dinner crowd filled most of the spots last night. Efficient counter, kitchen, and table delivery crew. Menus overhead for quality items for three squares: breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Btw - one of the few spots you could actually pay for a daily newspaper. The kiosks are by the entrance. Absolute indulgences, but you have to get a burger (burger melt, bacon cheeseburger are faves) customized with or without pickles and onions! Mmmm - juicy patties with melty cheese, fresh lettuce and tomato, held with a bun. Milkshakes come in a variety of flavors. Three sizes with large compostabke straws. Thick and flavorful! Fries are fresh and crispy in an upright cup. Dunkable with the items from the condiment island like ketchup or their homemade tartar sauce. Some even dunk them in their shake! Other notables are clean dining areas and clean women's restroom (the one time I used the facilities while onsite). I hope to get a few more dining opportunities in before this 73 year old site closes permanently. It is iconic because of the memories held decades preYelp and its proximity to the University of Washington Seattle campus. The Homie also had been dining here with family, Cartoonists Northwest meetups, and after UW classes to grab a hearty meal. Kudos to the staff past and present at the UVillage location! Sadly, yet another part of Seattle's culinary and community history ends because of development. My updated post is 5 stars for quality and ten stars for the nostalgic memories!

Yelp
Upon hearing this Burgermaster would be closing, my friend and I planned to get over here with haste to say goodbye to arguably the best burger joint in WA, but also because it is the original location. I don't know if either of those things I mentioned are true 100%, but Burgermaster is awesome so coming here wasn't a hard choice, I just need an excuse to come, any will do. I was surprised to see that that the other Burgermaster's I'd seen or been to were drive-up and they have runners that will come up to your car to take your order. This particular U-District Burgermaster really resembles a diner with Booth seats and tables which fine especially since this particular visit it wasn't exactly warm outside. Even then, they seem to have a breakfast menu here, perfect for families who want some breakfast specials and a cup of coffee. They also have cheesecakes further tapping my diner theory. The service is great here; after placing your order you get a plaque or electronic buzzer, and the servers come bring your food straight to your table. From ordering to food drop off at the table, the staff were friendly. So, what did I get? why, a Double Baconmaster of course! One of the greatest creations I've had the experience of enjoying since moving to the state. I didn't think it could be any better than at the Eastside location, but they did it here. I believe it is the best burger (thus far) I've had here in WA. Great service, great burgers. Burgermaster lives up to its name. This particular location is no different.

Yelp
I love all of Burgermaster's location and didn't know that this was their first location and only location with a diner. I was surprised to see that they had pies and a play area for kids. It really gives you that 90's diner nostalgia. Because the price of burgers are quite high, it feels more of a special occasion meal. Ever since they announced they will be closing, it's been packed with hardly any parking. Though it's little harder to access and hidden in a desolate lot, this location is a fun place to take a group of kids or enjoy a meal with family.

Yelp
Service quick and friendly. It's been a while since I've been to a Burgermaster but noticed they no longer offer combo meals. I chose the mushroom and Swiss burger added bacon. Burger was okay nothing special however disappointed in the quality of bacon. Very thin and tough. Burger patty was dry. My guess comes from a warming oven. Big disappointment was the bun was actually cold. Looked toasted but that's where it ended Onion rings very generic. Obviously a food service prepackaged frozen product. Lettuce tomato and tomatoes on the burger was fresh. This location is dine in or take a way. No car hops here. Dining room is massive. Very clean and over all a good dining experience.

Yelp
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" Walking into this Burgermaster, you are instantly transported to the 70s and there ain't nothing wrong with that. It doesn't appear anything has been updated in the past 30-40 years so don't expect any frills. Breakfast food, burgers, shakes, they got ya covered. Employees here a friendly and service is generally quick. TVs inside usually playing sports. Good size parking lot off 45th. Food here overall is always fresh and satisfying. The original burger always hits the spot albeit a touch messy if you add on more free toppings like myself. Fries come out hot and crispy but certainly not anything fancy. If looking for a decent quick meal for not-so-crazy prices this is your place.

Yelp
It's hard to watch this Burgermaster location close its doors. Growing up, it was our go-to spot for a good burger and a generous portion of fries. My dad even did a lot of early Gates Foundation work from one of the corner booths--taking meetings and even receiving mail there. While I'm sad to see this piece of Seattle history go, I'll think of it every time I order a vanilla shake and cheeseburger combo with everything on it at one of their other locations.

Yelp
If you've ever wanted to build your own Time Machine, you may be able to just take a trip to Burgermaster. This restaurant experience feels out of the 1950's! When you come inside it's like a combination of Dick's and Dennys. There's a very nice menu to choose from and even actual pieces of pies to view. Select wisely because in about 5 minutes whatever you ordered will be at your table thanks to an electronic beacon. Grab you food and sit in one of the many booths available. The service is quick, the staff is friendly and efficient and the ambiance is just swell. 443

Yelp
Bring back burger master!!!!!! Favorite place ever. Best burgers ever. I miss this place already

Yelp
I always appreciate a place where I know the food is made fresh. I can definitely say that about Burgermaster. I ordered the French Dip and they asked me how I wanted it cooked. Nice touch! I went with medium and it was delicious. Will probably try it rarer next time. Clean inside the restaurant. I will be back!

Yelp
First time eating here and loved it! Burgers are great & so are the fries. Let me just say their milkshakes are FIRE!! Definitely coming back. Counter service was good!

Yelp
Unfortunately can't speak for the burgers. I've seen this chain around and never went in to try it but I was actually pleasantly surprised by the .Crab and Swiss Melt ($12-13ish for just the sandwich). There was plentiful (REAL CRAB!) filling, the cheese was perfectly melty, and the bread was delightfully buttery and toasted. Also ordered a burger and a strawberry milkshake which I didn't get to try, my friend said these were just okay. Burger itself is cooked smashed style. Prices are on par with a fast casual, plentiful seating indoors. Nothing fancy about the interior, sort of reminds me of an amusement park spot with a condiment station in the middle and brick flooring. Order at counter, they give you a buzzer and you choose a seat. The man helping us out at the counter brought our food out to us which made us feel so special :)

Yelp
Great nostalgic burger place. Burgers are big and tasty. Fries are yummy and they have many different shake flavors. Definitely a Dicks competitor!
google avatar

Yelp
Great experience, and I especially want to express my delight and gratitude to the employee who packed my milkshakes. I asked for a bag to try to keep my milkshakes from melting on a commute, and was delighted to unpack them and find them with plastic cups and ice! So kind and above and beyond. Tried to call to thank you, but no answer. You made a positive difference in my day!

Yelp
Burgermaster, while serving good burgers that have a nostalgic taste and feel, also serves sandwiches and milkshakes that taste surprisingly well! The location has plenty of indoor seating with a vintage-y feel of sitting in a classic diner. Service and staff have been wonderful.

Yelp
First Time here, most likely last time. Staff was friendly, place was clean but wow prices for what you get are rough. Ordered the turkey master, onion rings, chicken Caesar with no croutons, the turkey master was just ok. Not a lot of turkey or bacon, the Caesar salad arrived with no croutons AND no chicken, lol So two iced teas, one sandwich, one small order onion rings ( not the order, but what was delivered) and the Caesar salad..... $40.00??? Not sure why everyone local talks about this place.

Yelp
This restaurant is Okay, it's a Bit pricey Like A Kids burger is almost 7 bucks and a normal one with just simple toppings is like 14-16$ that's Pretty outrageous the people who works there are nice But No way I'm paying 60 dollars for 2 ppl to have a decent meal and the Fried are like way too expensive .
google avatar

Thomas W.

Yelp
Food Well prepared and served on plate. Grilled cheese sandwich perfect and Fries were very tasty. Service was excellent and staff friendly and very polite. The exterior was surrounded by beautiful flowers.

Yelp
My favorite pancake spot in seattle. Service is pretty quick, never had any issues finding a table or waiting a super long time! It's a no frills joint, parking is easy to get off street in their lot!
google avatar

Belldandy O.

Yelp
Our group had just wrapped up a social event in University District and wanted to grab some quick carbs before heading out to drink. As we were ordering food, the restaurant was starting to close, and we had no idea that we had walked in before closing time. Thank you so much to the staff for still taking our orders! The food was hot and fresh. Definitely hit the spot.
google avatar

Laura M.

Yelp
Fast service. Original Quartermaster burger was barely warm and smashed, which was surprising since we ate in the restaurant and not out of a To-go bag. Definitely not the quality I remember- not even close.

Melanie G.

Yelp
Quick service and yummy affordable food! It gives a local McDonald's vibe. I recommend the fish sandwich with cheese or the regular cheeseburger was delicious as well! They have a nice variety of shake flavors as well!
google avatar

Yelp
Well here is one food item I love eating at Buger Master and that is the Grill Cheese/Crab Sandwich . Today I got one from my mom who went there to lunch with my nephew . To tell you the truth . I thought it was much better in the past . Maybe different locations make it different . This one was from the University of Washington location. But anyway I suck that guy down in less than 5 minutes .

Jessica J.

Yelp
Early morning coffee after a run meetings with friends gatherings salads and dinners . Lunch grab a seat yummy burgers fries milk shake treats after picking up kids from sports. Sweet spot will be missing from my life. Thanks for the foot hold for so wonderfully long. Seattle will miss you. As I will.

Yelp
Easily five stars because one of the best burgers and fries I've ever had and the customer service from Misty and the night crew was superb got a delicious burger just before closing. Pass that adore the ambiance and architecture of this restaurant very open-ended casual and family atmosphere plenty of space in a very nice way would be a perfect place for large groups. Definitely a winner of a place would most certainly highly recommend.

Yelp
We were hungry and decided to stop by after a Sunday night UW basketball game. It was busy, but the line went fast. Unfortunately, the cooks got overwhelmed and it took over 30 minutes to get our burgers. They tasted pretty good, but there wasn't a lot of veggies on them and the patties were fairly small. The nice thing was, the manager brought us our food and apologized for taking so long, and brought our boys free milk shakes. That was a great surprise.

Yelp
This is a childhood favorite! I've loved coming here my whole life. Their food is consistently good and their service outstanding. It is clean, organized and quick service as usual! This is the perfect place to take a date, or your family or yourself. My grandpa actually took my grandma here on dates in college! They are enforcing a mask policy at this time and are being extra careful with their COVID measures. They are providing indoor dining, but I needed my order to go today. Some tables are closed off to enforce distancingNot a surprise for a restaurant that has an excellent food safety rating from King County. Love this timeless Seattle tradition. :) Also they sell mugs and sweatshirts, AND they still do a soup of the day made from scratch.
google avatar

Yelp
New to Seattle. So far, my impressions of their beloved burgers were Dick's, and Rain City. I did not care for Dick's and Rain was not bad but Burgermaster has my heart now. I savored each and every bite of this masterpiece. The fries were reminiscent of McDonalds without all the extra salt. I'd love to come back to try their breakfast/pies/shakes. It's a little on the pricier side but I do love the ambiance of it all. The vintage coziness of it made me feel warm during this cold holiday season. I felt like I was in that restaurant from the movie Falling Down- only this time I got exactly what I was looking for in my burger. Pure bliss.
google avatar

AJ L.

Yelp
Solid spot! My first time ever visiting the local chain known colloquially as Microsoft's favorite - it's nothing life-changing, at the end of the day it's just another fast food burger; that said, it's pretty solid. Everything felt just a little step above what you would get at most big chains. Honestly, what stood out to me most is just how many sauces they offer in their lobby. As goofy of a reason as that is to like them, there's like 8+ different sauces in surplus, ready to grab, including tartar. Fun to try.
google avatar

John L.

Yelp
Long time burger joint by Uvillage up in Northern Seattle. My go to is always the mushroom burger combo. Their burgers will pleasantly surprise you, not stingy on the beef and fixings at all. Soft bread absorbs all the juices creating soft, scrumptious bites. The fries are comparable to Wendy's fries, which in my opinion are the best ones. Always have to get a milkshake as well! Goes perfect for dipping your fries in. Staff is always friendly and service is quick. The location has plenty of seating for dine-in as well. Menu also serves more than just burgers.
google avatar

Tracy A.

Yelp
This Burgermaster location is one of my faves, not because it's the Udistrict, but because I like the layout. There's a big parking lot and lots of inside seating. They also have a coke of outdoor tables. When I walk in and see the pie slices in the case, it feels like old diner days. We went with the bacon and the mushroom swiss burgers, onion rings, and a slice of peach pie. The food was hot and fresh, and the onion rings were crispy. The service was friendly. There seems to be the implication that this location is on its way out to make room for a building project. Really sorry hear this. I hate to see this long time local go.
google avatar

Alston P.

Yelp
My husband and I visited this location. The cashier was very rude. I wasn't sure if she was having a bad day or she didn't want to work there, but she didn't need to take her attitude out on me.

Aaron H.

Yelp
Burger master always serves a quality bacon burger. I also appreciate the customer service and cleanliness of the restaurant.
google avatar

Yelp
A great spot for an old school drive in feel! The burgers are delicious & their shakes are amazing too! Fun & friendly staff!
google avatar

Heather H.

Yelp
If your looking for a good local burger that comes with a small hometown feel Burgermaster is it! Nothing fancy here. In fact every time I come here it reminds me the way old McDonalds used to be in the 80's. Brick floors, super clean bathrooms, a huge condiment station in the middle and vast seating. Locally raised beef and most of the garnishes to the burger have been very fresh as well - no wilted ice berg lettuce! Overall it's the nostalgia feel and no frills that I come here for. Plain and simple.
google avatar

Channing C.

Yelp
Solid spot for some breakfast and burgers. This is not one of those fancy, boutique, let's elevate your burger type of places. It's old skool. I've never gotten sick eating here and it has a homey, diner feel. It's spacious inside and there is no drive up here. I really enjoy the Swedish pancakes here. They are really soft and full of vanilla flavor. It's not the best food, but not the worst either. It's also conveniently located on the other side of the Safeway and in walking distance to U-Village and a bus stop. This is a great place to bring family or friends. It would be great if they were open all night, as this would be a nice spot to unwind after partying or drinking all night. I've yet to try the crab melt, but it's on my list for next time!
google avatar

Rachel L.

Yelp
A solid burger joint that's no frills and straight to the point. The facility looks like an old Denny's or diner that's been converted into a Burgermaster. I ordered the Baconmaster combo with fries and a peanut butter milkshake as well as the Crab and Swiss Cheese melt. It was good, but nothing crazy. I will be back for the shakes though-- they are thick and creamy!
google avatar

Joel B.

Yelp
Awful service!! Ordered through DoorDash. They left food out. I drove to the restaurant and showed them the receipt and explained that they left food out. The guy laughed at me and did not offer to make the order right. We've been coming here for years and this was the worst customer service experience ever. Shame on you Burg. Done coming here.

Yelp
I've been to over half the states in this great nation, and outside of the In-n-out burger or the Big Kahuna burger, that Burgermaster has to be the best burger in the country. It's the sauce, not unlike McD's "secret" sauce and that makes all the difference. They use generous 4-oz patties and for $2.00 more you can get a half-pound burger with all the fixin's for about $10--plus their awesome onion rings and homemade tarter sauce for $15 that will hold you well past dinner. This one is the original one that made the name famous. Glad to be only two blocks away from them. They also have a BLT and a Turkey Club sandwich for those non-burger days, and even I can't eat a whole Club. You can customize your sandwich also on Door Dash, which I find highly convenient. Not to mention the only place outside of Kidd Valley that has fifteen flavors of milkshakes in two sizes. It's fan--tastic.
google avatar

Andrea M.

Yelp
This six dollar sandwich looks so good and they said it was on sourdough until I opened it I was impressed when I saw it was lightly golden I'm not burnt but then when I took a bite into it and opened it up and saw that it was that fake box cheese you slice and you don't even taste sourdough bread this bread does not taste like sourdough at all this was a waste of six dollars it's flavorless and

Yelp
I'm on a mission to visit EVERY Burgermaster. Why? Because they do things right. This Burgermaster is an anomaly: you don't "Dine in Your Car!" It's a walk-in, order, sit down place. Plus their menu is much more extensive than other locations. They have Chili! They have Fish and Chips! Wild. This time we ordered the mushroom burger, the curly fries, a Fish sandwich (modified by Sourdough, and swap out American for Swiss). There is great parking, the workers are cheerful and helpful, the food comes quickly and you can customize your order freely. For some reason I think I like the actual food at the Aurora and Kirkland branches better. I have no idea why - maybe there's something about eating in my car? Maybe I should have ordered my food to go and eaten it in my car. In any case, if you're in Seattle and crave good food, try Burgermaster (my all-time favorite is still the Turkeymaster!)

Yelp
Decided to finally give Burgermaster a try after driving by it countless times. Got the burgermelt meal. The restaurant definitely attracted an older crowd. Saw an old man with his tongue completely submerged in a cup of ketchup. Greasy but OK burger. It was pretty heavy on the condiments. Fries were good, similar to McDonalds but not quite as good. May or may not have found a hair in the burger. ‍ Prices were way too high for what it is, ~$15 is a bit much for a burger meal. I'll likely never go to Burgermaster ever again, glad I was able to check it out though. Not that great!

Emily R.

Yelp
Love Burgermaster breakfasts! Swedish pancakes, omelettes, cinnamon rolls and great eggs bacon and hash browns. Love the all you can drink coffee and the freezer jam :) So strange, they say they are not closing down but the disabled bathroom womens stall has been broken for 4 weeks and they haven't fixed it. I love Burgermaster but I can't bring my 95 yo mom unless they fix it !!! You can do better I hope

Yelp
History lives at this burger master. Great food quick service . No roller skating waitresses like on Aurora but always the best condiments bar in town

First restaurant I went to when phase 1 opened up. Mannnnnnnn hellllll yeah. Was just stoked to have a burger that I didn't make for myself and to not have to do no MF dishes at the crib lol. Love it. Anyway, burger was juicy it was fresh, it was delicious and I wasn't super hungry only like half hungry so I got the mini combo thing. And surprisingly that was more than enough to get me fully full especially with the fries and the shake. I'll definitely be going back (and not cause it's less than 5 min away frm my house lol)

Yelp
Hamburger patties were similar to Mcdanolds in my opinion. The taste was not that good. The picture on the web looked alot better then what I received. The princess are over the top for the quality of food. I am Sorry but I wont be going back. The charges are extremely high for quality of food Everything super small
