I love cheeseburgers more than just about anyone on the entire planet, and after hearing such great things about Burgermeister, I made the trek to eat here once I arrived in Berlin. Let me tell you: the hype is real and 100% deserved. This was one of the (if not THE) best burger I have ever been served anywhere in the world. It was so great I went back to eat here twice while in the bustling German city.
This place is dive-y because it's literally located in the middle of a busy street under a bridge (you'll be eating and looking out a window at cars that are whizzing by mere feet away). There's extremely limited seating so come prepared to stand up. There will be a line but it moves quickly. The employees were kind with us foreigners and they do speak English (although you'll score points if you at least try to order in German as we did).
You order at the window, pay, and then get your food when it's ready. Since everything is made fresh to order, expect to wait a minimum of 15 minutes on a busy day. We had to elbow our way into a small standing room only ledge to eat our meal but it just added to the overall ambiance!
I opted for a local cold beer and a classic burger with chili cheese fries. What struck me the most was the overall high quality. Europeans have better food standards than we do here in the U.S. and it shows in their food! The bun was soft and spongy with a buttery flavor, the burger tasted super beefy and fresh, and the produce toppings were top notch all around (crispy lettuce, bright red tomatoes, and sweet onions)! All of these elements combine to make one of the best burgers you'll ever eat.
The fries were great too! Topped with chili, jalapenos and a melty cheese sauce, the potatoes were crispy and hot. They were also a standout. The portion size was a little small compared to the bloated American standards but they're so satisfying that ordering one to share will be plenty. They even came with cute little wooden mini forks for eating.
If I had to describe the burger to Americans, think of it as a super high quality mesh between In-N-Out and SmashBurger. That's not doing the place justice, but you get the general idea.
Bring stickers from your hometown if you have 'em because customers have adorned the interior with them.
Don't let anyone poke fun at you for eating American style burgers while in a foreign country -- these are THAT good, take it from a burger fiend like me. I LOVE this place and can't wait to return to Berlin to eat here again!
