Burgerville employees strike over coronavirus - Eater Portland

"Yesterday, every employee at the SE 92nd Avenue Burgerville location went on a one-day strike to protest what they claim are unsafe working conditions related to the coronavirus outbreak. The shop re-opened today, and almost 40 of Burgerville’s other locations remain open, but the Burgerville Workers Union (BVWU) has issued a list of requirements during this pandemic. The strike was largely in protest of a reduced staff making it difficult to maintain sanitation standards and protect workers." - Alex Frane

Food Industry Workers Pushed Hard for Unionization in 2019 | Eater

"A Portland-area fast-food chain whose employees pushed to unionize in 2018 and were widely reported as the first federally recognized fast-food union in the U.S.; organizers and workers described the effort as a response to the low-wage economy, high turnover, and grueling day-to-day conditions of fast-food work, with organizers like Luis Brennan citing earlier labor campaigns as inspiration and workers such as Nate Pride emphasizing how taxing the work is and how that fatigue makes organizing challenging yet necessary." - Jaya Saxena

Just a heads up that after the past eight or 10 years, Burgerville's fabulous seasonal Strawberry shortcake....infamous for its Fresh sliced strawberries, strawberry purée, old school biscuit- like shortcake, topped with a dollop of vanilla ice cream is no longer.... I was served this weird strawberry purée instead. It looked ODD so I asked if they'd forgotten the shortcake.? The server was delightful and added extra. Upon leaving the drive-thru , I pulled over to put a couple strawberry slices in my mouth... realized there were NONE. Drove back through expecting we'd all realize the strawberry sundae purée had been used accidentally ... Instead I get a snarky server explaining to me how the strawberry shortcake topping is made.... *yawn* And then you know who's next.... the eye rolling, condescending manager. Miss me with that, sugar.... Lawdy, that BV sure has changed. All y'all OG BV crew know exactly who this is. As does the owner. "Effin' Metal" 🤘🏻 Bad experience.... this evening.

I used to love Burgerville and it was a healthier alternative for fast food. Unfortunately their quality has become so dismal now I don't know if I will keep giving it another chance. I've complained to the company but they don't respond. This time the order was wrong and food quality abysmal. The drive thru wait time was almost 20 minutes but there wasn't a long line. No reason given for the slow service and the staff looked depressed. I ordered the Northwest burger with no tomato or pickles. Instead they gave me no lettuce but left on the tomato and pickle. The burger patty itself was sad and not even in a round shape. It looked like 2 thin pieces of meat thrown together to make a patty. The burger itself didn't look anything like the picture. The patty size looked like it was a original small cheeseburger size vs the Northwest it was supposed to be. I spent over $20 on this meal and the only decent thing was the milkshake. The fries were over done, $8 cheeseburger a joke and horrible service. I didn't even get napkins or request for condiments. By the time I realized this I had already driven away and didn't have time to go back. This is sad to me because Burgerville used to be one of my favorite places to eat quickly and been going for 20 years now. I'm not sure I'll go back after 4 bad experiences in a row over the last 8 months. It's not just this store but have issues and disappointments with other ones in the Portland area.

Google
Drive-thru service was fine; food was... Meh. Today the burgers were mediocre, which was unexpected and disappointing. I also chanced the fish & chips for the first time. For that I DID expect mediocrity, and was not "disappointed." Tasty enough, but the pieces of fish were flat and "uniform in shape," indicating some mechanical prep (likely prior to delivery to the restaurant). Again, I didn't expect much as this is a burger joint. The chocolate shake was delicious, but next morning when I poured the refrigerated leftover into a mug (in anticipation of making a "ghetto mocha" with my morning coffee), the shake had become a somewhat-coagulated slime. (A very close comparison would be "the texture and viscosity of egg whites.") Needless to say, that was sent straight down the drain with a Drano chaser. I don't know what's in their shakes (maybe it IS egg?), but I do know I won't be having one again--day old OR fresh. The fries were good, but today's meal was not a good value for the price.

Google
Love the atmosphere here but the cost and value of the food doesn't match. It's really expensive to eat here and I would expect the food to be top notch, fresh to order, and sadly, it was quite the opposite. I used to LOVE 25th and Powell BV.

Google
I came in to see if I could get something to eat or drink. I asked the manager if he could help and told me it wasn't his place and even refused water to drink. I walked out confused and started to write my review of the situation and a very nice employee came out and said she'd buy me something to eat. I really appreciate what she did and her manager could learn a few things from her.

Google
The food was really good, I had the 4 piece Fish basket and rather than fries all the time I chose the sweet chili cauliflower bites (as seen in photo) It was very good and I will be back many more tkimes if only to get more of these. The spices are perfectly balanced and each flavor compliments the other. You can taste each ingredient with each bite. The fish was good, it was kind of dry and a little overcooked but still a good tasty. There was nothing but young high school/college student aged "looking" employees working, they were well versed in "fast food service" I didn't have to wait at all,(ordered online/pick up) there were no extras fees and it was so painless and fast. It asks if you want to add a tip when you're at the checkout but you're not required too. I live in South Portland but the location on the SE side of the river and across the Ross Island Bridge was easy to find and to get too. I'm sorry for the long description, I wanted my experience detailed for anyone wanting something other than hamburgers & fries. The best part? They are open til 11pm for those night owls like me. I'll definitely be back!

Emily

Google
Thank you to the sweet woman working the close on 7/22 that turned my rough night around! I’d doordashed food from their restaurant over an hour before close, just to have my food delivered over an hour later, and it not be my food, but someone else’s. The dasher went to get gas/made other stops, so it left me with little time before they closed. I called, and she made up my order again. My GPS stopped working on the way there, and I ended up getting there after close. She was so friendly still, and had my order for me. The little things matter and her attitude and effort made a difference in my day, and set my birthday off to a great start!

Google
The food is fantastic. Worthy of 5 stars. My complaint is l that the French fries are inconsistent. Sometimes I'll get those awesome shoe string fries. And other times they're thicker and not to my liking. Wish they would just stick to one.

Yelp
They forgot all of our sauces and gave us an extra burger?? They asked if we wanted the gluten free burger assembled and we said yes, they didn't assemble. The receipt is correct but nothing came quite right. Food tasted good. Took a while but kind of a normal long for BV
google avatar

Bobbie W.

Yelp
We went for lunch but unfortunately the entire place was filled with kids from the school, not eating the food from the restaurant but their own lunches. They took up all the tables for paying customers that would have like to have eaten there. We left and went to HopWorks and the food and atmosphere was MUCH better

Dan M.

Yelp
I ordered the Spicy Linguica Breakfast Bowl at the Gladstone location. I had this before and it was delicious. Unfortunately, today was not. The eggs were not scrambled, just in a long flat piece. The cheese was not on it. The salsa was not served with it. The dish was cold. I don't know if the cook was new or what. I'd think for $6.99, they'd make more of an effort. This was a pathetic breakfast.
google avatar

Rosalinda D.

Yelp
The accuracy of getting all my food is ridiculous! The time waiting is ridiculous! The food is always semi warm, this location is especially disgusting dirty! I don't recommend eating here!

Lon E.

Yelp
Used to be much better. Now food is poorly prepared, lukewarm and tasteless. Also, now charges 25 cents for a cup of water! I don't like soft drinks but I want to drink something. Since prices are inflated and food is meh, I will now go elsewhere!
google avatar

Randi E.

Yelp
I used the drive-thru and was pleasantly surprised by the food. Definitely better than your typical fast food. And great dipping sauce options. The cherry on top was the out of this world chocolate shake. Well worth the calorie sacrifice. Treat yourself!!
google avatar

Marti D.

Yelp
New to the area and wanted to try a local place. Meh. Burger was ok but the bun is overly bready. Fries over salted. And now they ask for tips on the credit card machine. Won't be back since it's expensive and ultimately unsatisfying

J D.

Yelp
The food here is getting more and more poorly prepared. Typical order is usually wrong, cold, and simply doesn't taste good. And to top it off, prices are outrageous for a lousy experience. I've been disgusted and disappointed for the last time. As a life long Portlander, I'm sad to say it but the big corporation that bought BV years ago really got greedy, Destroying a local business.
google avatar

Darren Y.

Yelp
Been a while since I've gone here and the place hasn't changed. Drive thru was paaaaacked so dined in. Halibut fish and chips were decent. Got burgerville sauce w it which was nice w fries. I like the original cheeseburger which is super basic - bread burger cheese and sauce. Satisfying. Used to like the shakes but imho they are a ripoff now
google avatar

Chris H.

Yelp
This is pretty much the only location in the area that isn't a complete disaster. Food is fresh, staff is friendly, doesn't demand a tip and great location right off of Powell

Rebecca C.

Yelp
This place is getting expensive. I ordered a kids cheeseburger meal with a small chocolate shake and a Colossal burger and large chocolate shake for 30.00 bucks. This is ridiculous.
google avatar

Don L.

Yelp
Burgers were dry and way too expensive. Wait staff rude. Strawberry shake full of chunks that won't go up straw. Burgerville used to be the best. Not anymore

Mary V.

Yelp
We came in this evening and got two plantville burgers and fries. We waited about 15 minutes for our to go order to be ready. Once we got home we opened our burgers to find that they had char all over them, and both burgers were missing the dressings. The fries were also half filled and soggy. If you are going to be busy and have a wait at least make the food worth waiting for!
google avatar

Avail B.

Yelp
Quite literally got everything wrong in my order. I am very allergic to cheese and made it very obvious I could not eat cheese and both of my items came with cheese. Wrong sauce, wrong fries, and awful customer service. The food itself even if it was the right items was thrown in the bag and tasted did not taste good. I'm done with you burgerville everytime I go to this SPECIFIC store they mess up.

Catherine S.

Yelp
So glad I paid five bucks for a half bag of fries. And this was after I asked why the bag wasn't full......

Pierre S.

Yelp
I used to like Burgerville but not any more Ordered a latge Classic Fries $4.29 and 1 1/2 lb. Colossal Burger $9.89 to go Total $14.18 . Waited 15 min. for my order which was cold 5 min. later. After reviewing my credit card statement, I was charged $16.82

Owen P.

Yelp
don't have ice cream I just wanted my ice cream but they ruined my night bc of this rlly disappointed in this, lowk gonna give me depression.

Yelp
Burgerville Corp. you need to audit this place. It's nothing like the other Burgerville's I have been to. In fact after coming here several times and giving them a chance I am done! First off, the girl at the cash register in the drive-through had blue gloves on and while I was waiting for my order she took money, was in the cash register drawer, opened the dirty drive thru window, she was restocking condiments and then she went and got my order from the back.....opened the bags by sticking her whole nasty germ laden blue glove hands in the bags. Who is she protecting herself? Because she definitely was not protecting me and I am a lifelong customer. The minute it came to the food she should've gotten rid of the gloves and wash her hands before she touched the food. This is nasty Unsanitary. She then opened the window handed me my food and shut the window and disappeared. I'm hoping she wasn't Ignoring me... But I was trying to get her attention to talk about this Then there was a car behind me and I didn't want to punish them with this by holding up the line. So I headed home and what donI get but a large order of burnt carcinogenic waffle fries. Totally inedible and totally not fine!! They were dripping grease and looked like someone was too lazy to make a fresh batch so they stuck whatever they had back in the deep fryer... This is a huge no-no!! What has happened to Burgerville???? They used to be so stable.

Stan H.

Yelp
Shakes are good, everything else is mediocre or worse. Very expensive for what is served. This saddens me as I patronised the original Burger ille USA.
google avatar

Dee F.

Yelp
Burger was cold, cheese not melted. Asked what type of sauces we wanted for onion rings didn't receive them. When I asked if they were in the box the lady stated yes, they were not. No napkins no ketchup even though I asked for them. The most upsetting though were the burgers COLD & DISGUSTING. The the amount of money. Burgerville charges the food and service should be exception. Won't be back.
google avatar

Yelp
Our family has loved Burgerville for years. With 2 vegetarians in the family we loved the black bean burgers. Sadly, we can no longer eat at Burgerville because they switched to impossible burger and dropped the black bean option. There are a lot of vegetarians who for a lot of reasons can not eat impossible burger. Until they bring back an option besides impossible burger we will not be eating there.

James H.

Yelp
Haven't ate here in years it has always been good. Stopped eating it because of the price for fast food. Decided to try it like 15 yrs later and nothing but garbage. Truffle fries ya ok. Regular fries tasted like burnt oil. Burger was dry. This meal has made up my mind. I will never eat at Burgerville again. Sad to say.
google avatar

Mike G.

Yelp
Friday night excitement. At the end I almost had to laugh. Spent an HOUR in the drive through. Yes an hour. Photo is from my 360 but not even at the end of my journey for takeout. Had regular cheeseburgers (dry). Fish and chips (expensive and small) 2 chocolate shakes (pretty good), walla walla onion rings (overfried and way too Panko breaded) and a 6.50 seasonal salad that didn't come with dressing (and was tiny- see photo). BV charges a lot for fast food, so please get it right. And if you can't service the drive through, then close off the indoors. What if I had to go to the bathroom, or had an emergency? Trapped between cars for an hour? $50 plus dollars before a tip. Come on.
google avatar

William Y.

Yelp
Everytime I drive by this place they got a full line in the drive thru. I look it up on yelp, its got 3 stars. I'm like I gotta try this place though, is it actually good? Well, I think 3 or 3.5 stars is accurate. Nothing particularly good or bad, just a fast food burger joint. Fries were good. Burger was very average-- it had bacon, cheese, lettuce, tomato, mayo on it. I think either more seasoning or a better bun or something could give it some flair. I got ranch and garlic aioli sauces to try (25 cents each) and those were pretty tasty. Total was about $10. Nothing I'd go back for or ever recommend.
google avatar

Juniper K.

Yelp
So I really like this places milkshakes but that's all I really like. They have very average presentation and their fries are very average. Also why is the large fry barely any fries?? 3/5 stars also because I felt very bad after eating not very much of this food.
google avatar

Hannah W.

Yelp
For fast food, I actually prefer Burgerville over McDonalds or some of the other chains. Ordering through the app is so easy and the best way to order given they are still closed inside and the drive-thru line is always ridiculously long.

D S.

Yelp
Since the food is good, I'll give them 2 stars for service unfortunately! Over 10 minutes wait at the dive through! I asked for ketchup, and got mustard! Come on guys! EVERY TIME I go there they miss or mess up something!! And they are not cheap either!
google avatar

Theo M.

Yelp
The best d@mn onion rings I've had from chain restaurant. They were piping hot and juicy. Burnt my lips and that's a good thing. Didn't even need ketchup.
google avatar

Terry S.

Yelp
I was out catching some Lyft riders and stopped for lunch. Burgerville is always a good choice. My burger was good as usual but the rosemary fries were cold and soggy. I also have to add the restroom was one of the dirtiest I've seen in awhile. This was disappointing because it's unlike Burgerville to be this way.
google avatar

Katy P.

Yelp
Asian chick with short black hair and hot pink died tips asked us if we wanted a straw for our milkshake (obviously?!) Then forgot to give us our milkshake And after patiently waiting for her to do whatever she was doing, she opened the window and started reading us someone else's order completely forgetting to give us our shake... Friendly tip DONT DO DRUGS AT WORK

Dylan S.

Yelp
sort of a bummer. They charged 25 cents for water. booths were unclean. Dead moths were littered around the premises making for an unsanitary environment. several strange customers persistantly stared at us. Signs had incorrect grammar.
google avatar

Khang T.

Yelp
The regular fries here are so gas, on the low they might be better than McDonald's fries and I love McDonald's fries. The green sauce on the original hamburger is super fire too

Joe H.

Yelp
Went to the tannsbourne location for the walla walla onion rings, always a summer highlight. Unfortunately, things change & these will just be a memory now. The rings were very overdone, to the point of burnt & had been sitting around for so long the onion was reduced to a ring of slime or even non existent. Horrible. Bought 2 orders & threw the second order away it was so bad. Sadly, never again.
google avatar

Mikhail H.

Yelp
I do love Burgerville because you can usually count on them to prepare what you want in the same way as the other locations. This place was a becon for me when I was super hungry and wanting something different. Its still fast food sure but there are certainly way worse things you can eat since they at least use real ingredients - local ones too and you get what you pay for. In this case a pepper bacon cheeseburger which definitely hit the spot when I really needed something too. Perfect location to save me from food deprivation. Easy to get in and out of the drive through and be on our way down Powell.
google avatar

Leslie B.

Yelp
Wow love love this place. Got here at 9:55 and they close at 10. Too late to order on the app and my van too tall to use drive thru I tried walking thru drive up and a really nice girl named Bree came outside and took my order even tho they were closing in 2 minutes! Love their food love their customer service!
google avatar

Stephanie S.

Yelp
Laaaaame...you cant trust no one around here! My burger patty had a bite taken out of it.....
google avatar

Peggy S.

Yelp
I used to love the idea of a burgerville burger . Our last couple of experiences have been terrible . Cold , minuscule amount of sauce , wilted lettuce .. very few onions , cold cheese . I will not return . Peggy

Jim D.

Yelp
Ran through the airport in Portland to get there before closing, they had closed early because as they said they were short manned. When asked they didn't even consider serving is. 5 minutes after there official closing time manager was on his cell phone. Lame and very disappointed. We are usually Burger fans but airport way underachieved

A.j. A.

Yelp
This is the worst location... I've paid for bacon 3 times and got home to have my Colossal burger with just cheese stripped of everything because some idiot doesn't know how to take a order. You think if you pay a extra fee for something you would get it... but not at this location
google avatar

Nano J.

Yelp
I normally love burgerville and have had good experiences with them. But as is typical you buy per chicken strip. Now when I think of chicken strip I think of an actual strip. For $1.59 a piece this is what I got. I'm pretty disappointed in these guys charging me the better part of a buck fifty for something that's not even with $.50. Really unfortunate this happened because they are normally a great restaurant for a quick bite....
google avatar

Jane N.

Yelp
Best fast food burger ever. Not greasy or stomach ache. Fries were dry though and they didn't include ketchup in the doordash order. Chicken strips were ok, dry, but the place won't hurt your stomach. Love it! This is coming from someone who cannot handle most fast food.
google avatar

Miles S.

Yelp
Stopped by on my way to school to grab a cup of coffee. I payed $1.69 in coins. The lady kept telling me I didn't pay enough, and kept asking for more and more coins. I gave her three extra nickels until she finally told me I payed enough. I know people don't get payed enough in the restaurant industry, but was that really necessary? She didn't even give me my nickels back, she gave me one penny after she decided that I gave her $1.69 when she had $1.85 in her hand. I would at least wait to take extra coins when someone has a big order-- easier to miss by the customer. I have heard by many people that Burgerville has a history of doing this, but I never believed it until today.
google avatar

Samantha C.

Yelp
So sorry to report the Number 7 Burger to be nothing more than hype! This meat patty was similar to the other similar sized burgers on the menu, and had very little difference in trimmings: pickles, tomato, onion, etc. Though it is priced considerably higher! The bun was tough and texture suggested it may have been microwaved (re-heated); the entire sandwich may have been microwaved with cheese and veggies, before wrapping and sending off in the bag Disappointing

Da P.

Yelp
The wait is unbelievable due to inefficient layout. Instead of taking your order ahead of time like Chik fill A or Dutch Bros, they make you wait to order. Stop being so cheap and invest just a little bit in your customer. I and others are currently boycotting BV, due to the insane wait.

Danielle B.

Yelp
Holy MOLY!!!! This place is so slow. I never ever wrote reviews, this may be my first. But I've tried this place many times and the wait is about as long as sitting down at a restaurant. I just got stuck in mine for 30 minutes (only 6 cars) and couldn't leave because I was between other cars. I understand that this is suppose to be more quality fast food, but the wait is ridiculous and needs to be addressed asap.

Thomas I.

Yelp
I ordered pickup from here and the burger was warm and looked ok, but it tasted like sour meat. They either had their burgers expire and served them to me or their grill was so dirty it left a foul taste. Either way, Pretty much inedible.
google avatar

Hope E.

Yelp
Worst Burgerville I have been to. Why you ask? Because this is the second fucking time I have gotten a raw burger. I will be telling everyone I know to never go to this location again. 1) I have gotten ice cold food several upon several times from here. 2) I order custom orders and they never give me what I ask, instead they give me cold burgers sitting around- already assembled. 3) they ALWAYS fuck up my order. So in the end it's like they are stealing my money because they are always leaving things out. And 4) they send me home with food so raw it could make me sick. This location is ruining Burgervilles name and reputation... DO NOT GO HERE. Service may be awesome and the people are nice but the food is shit and raw! and they steal your money. What a joke and a total waste!

Yelp
The last time I had Burgerville food was when a friend at work brought me back a cheeseburger and a shake (so good) about a month or so ago at work, but I hadn't eaten in at a Burgerville outlet until this morning for quite awhile. Ron was driving me to work this morning, and we like to stop for breakfast on weekends. We've both been on a diet, and the darned man has dropped 20 pounds and beloved by his doctor, and is fast on disappearing into someone I might not know if I ran into him on the street. Well, shoot, since I'm supposed to be supporting him in this diet deal, the 20-pound weight loss caught my attention. His favorite diet meal at Burgerville is getting the breakfast burrito without the tortilla wrap. The actual presentation is of the sausage patty cut into strips on two scrambled eggs and some salsa topping. It is quite a filling amount of breakfast. The eggs were perfectly cooked in omelette style (I've got a bad attitude toward uncooked eggs), and the sausage patties were perfect. None of it was oily or greasy and also nicely presented. I ordered iced coffee, which they don't serve, but our charming hostess and I both saw the light bulbs snap on over our heads, and she gave me a big enough empty cup to fill with ice and then pour the hot coffee over the ice - voila iced coffee that was brewed from a good blend and brand. Parking in their private lot was easy because it was 8 a.m. Indoors everything was nice and clean. Our breakfasts were brought to us quickly. While this is not a Portland hot spot for brunch or anything, we had a really tasty and fairly healthy breakfast that was diet-worthy but not deprivational (I think I just made that word up). We talked and laughed so much that it was very fun and tasty. Every diet should be so easy!! Come and give it a whirl.

Yelp
I haven't stopped into Burgerville for a few months. I went through the drive through tonight to pickup food for my boyfriend and I, 2 pepper bacon cheese burger baskets and 2 12 oz milkshakes. The shakes were delicious like always but the pepper bacon cheese burgers were cold and neither had bacon on them. Then they each came with fries, which we ended up with 3 bags instead of 2. Which would have been cool but the fries were only borderline warm. I am disappointed with the order quality of my visit at the St.Helens Oregon location.
