24 Hour Guide to Asheville Eating and Drinking - Eater Carolinas

"South Slope’s Burial Beer is the trendy, midafternoon pick-me-up that everyone needs. Yes, it may sometimes smell like a frat party, but it feels more like a grungey, inclusive party for the people. It’s a super social, energetic brewery, and a great spot to make friends. Or just bring your own friends (but find a spot early on in the day). Burial’s Surf Wax or any of the imperial stouts, enjoyed in the more tightly packed inside or the bustling outside bar area, are antidotes to an afternoon slump." - Kayleigh Ruller

16 Best Asheville Breweries to Visit Now - Eater Carolinas

"Burial Beer sits in the South Slope district of downtown Asheville, popular for multiple breweries within walking distance from each other and allowing for easy bar crawl action. With its large murals and empty trucks and cars used as seating, Burial Beer brings a fun atmosphere to complement its award-winning IPAs like the Surf Wax. In addition to the brewery, Burial Beer has opened Forestry Camp, a newer restaurant in Biltmore Village featuring a menu to pair with an extensive beverage menu including its very own Burial Beer." - Barbara Skidmore

Google
I just took a 4 day trip to Asheville. We went to almost 20 breweries. Burial was the best brewery in totality, and is probably one of my top 3 across the country. The layout of South Slope is neat. It has multiple levels, indoor and outdoor, and some kitschy stuff. The beer selection between the two bars is crazy. We visited 3x because there was so much to try. I think we tried 15 beers across the 3 visits. Almost everything was outstanding and I had legitimately one of the 5 best beers I’ve ever tried. BUT I noticed someone else had mentioned on here that the service isn’t great. I felt that way too until my 3rd visit when Peter was behind the bar. He salvaged my service opinion of Burial.

Google
The vibes here are immaculate. Burial Beer Co. is the perfect morbid brewery. From the small details such as scythes for door handles to the beer names, this brewery was a good time. There is a gift shop and a ton of outdoor seating, including the option to sit in 2 run down vehicles. Inside the building there are 2 bars to purchase beer. If the line is long just go to the other one. We went on a Saturday night and it was very active with families and individuals.

Google
I’ve been searching for the best smash burger in Asheville and I finally found it here! The guys cooking in the kitchen know exactly what they’re doing and seem so genuine! Even my wife who hates cheeseburgers tried it and wanted one herself, this place is my happy place with the best beer and atmosphere and now food you cannot go wrong!

Google
Incredible place. The atmosphere and theme of the brewery are fun and quirky. The beers were out of this world. The list has a nice variety, with a lot of hoppy options but also some nice stouts and some easier drinkers. The food was good, as well. The staff was super inviting and I felt like they were really invested in both their beers and the experience of being there. I’ve been to a lot of breweries. And this is amongst the best.

Google
I visit Asheville from Greenville, SC regularly to brewery hop, and Burial is hands down my favorite stop. They are dog-friendly, feature indoor and outdoor seating, and have two bars with completely unique menus. The beers are some of the best I’ve had, and the burgers are to die for. If you’re in the area and looking for a good beer, this should be your first stop.

Google
I enjoyed this brewery, it is set up in a unique location, having the inside main bar, a bar with a smaller selection in the back, an outside seating area with a striped out vehicle covered in stickers and a small shop that is in the building next door. The murals on the wall were funny, and the car outside was covered with kids running around and screaming, which was interesting for a brewery, but ok..

John Farver

Google
Beers were ok, all quality but not my fav style. Cool place, hot with no A/C the fans helped when the temp was 85 and humidity 80%. Counter service and have to buss your own table. It's a popular place for the locals.

Mark Johnson

Google
Plenty of outside spots to enjoy one of their many offerings. And they're dog-friendly! Beers are diverse and delicious. Staff was friendly and helpful with your selection.

Yelp
Burial embodies the spartan vibe that permeates the South Slope. Its unique and macabre atmosphere is evident in the toe tags hanging from tap handles, creating a truly distinctive brewery setting. Years ago, before unfiltered IPAs were a thing, I stumbled upon my first cloudy beer here at Burial. This is just one of the many reasons why Burial stands out as a top-tier Asheville brewery. They craft well-crafted, artisanal, and innovative brews that are among the best you can find in the 828. As a voracious reader, I thoroughly appreciate Burial's poetic and philosophical prose. They use this literary style to describe their innovative and flavorful brews, creating a captivating reading experience. One of my current favorites is 'A Guide to Safely Stewarding the Contents of One's Consciousness,' which is like a philosophical journey in a can. It's a concept that would appeal to a character in 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.' Burial offers a diverse range of brews to suit different tastes, all within the confines of their original Crypt. With the numerous breweries in Asheville, people often debate which are the best 3-5 breweries in town. Burial is undoubtedly in my top 3, and I'm confident it's on the short list of most beer enthusiasts.

Yelp
So enjoyed my time at Burial Beer in Asheville this past week. We stopped here at recommendation of multiple people. We had a quick lunch on our way to Biltmore (very close by). I had the frozen drink of the day - delicious. And super smart to have a non-beer drink readily available. My husband had a flight of beers after multiple trips up to the cashier (due to 2 drink per transaction NC law). I also had the cheeseburger with perfectly peppered fries. My daughter had a sourdough grilled cheese, which she didn't love ... but it was tasty, if a little dense. Loved the outdoor covered seating area. And the old empty vehicles were perfect for keeping littles occupied while close.

Yelp
My husband was very excited to try out burial beer (based on their high untapped beer rankings) and they surely didn't disappoint! The atmosphere was lax and the bartenders were helpful! Would recommend the "Just because we didn't want to and not because we couldn't" . If you don't grab dinner before, they've got food as well!

Yelp
Stopped in with some friends and found a table on the large patio! I enjoyed my ipa and tasted my friend's slushy!

Yelp
Sounds of waves collide was so unique- not what I expected. Andthe tearing of flesh from bone. It was so good with barrel aged sour peach, coffee, lavender and orange blossom

Yelp
Good selection of beers, heavy on the IPAs (if that's what you're into). Loved the location. Was a work of art itself!

Yelp
Such a cool place! We had a large group and tried this place out after going to another place in town and had a bad experience. The burial totally made up for it! The food was great. The vibe was great. We'll definitely be back. Highlights: Beer - Surf wax Steak frites (yum!) Live music Great for a large group

Yelp
Great spot with great beer. Stopped here the other day and really enjoyed it. The beer selection is large so you can try a variety of options. I had ordered Drowning in Habits and really like the cinnamon, lime, and vanilla bean combo. Very refreshing. My fiancé ordered the Surf Wax and enjoyed the light flavor of it as well.

Yelp
Burial Beer is in a nice location with a sprawling outdoor space in which to enjoy the weather and a nonstop parade of awesome dogs. Sadly, even though we were enjoying ourselves thoroughly on this visit - it was cut short capriciously by a strange encounter with the rude bar counter server. We had just eaten at Pie.Zaa nearby and we had ordered a round of drinks. When we went to order a second - we were told that I could order one but they'd all discussed that my friend could not have one. We couldn't imagine what in the world they were talking about or what could have possibly warranted discussion about us, so we just left. Unfortunately my friend walks with a brace and can be unsteady on his feet sometimes - that is the nature of having dropfoot. But the way we were treated is not something that should be a thing in hospitality whatsoever. (10-year service veteran speaking here.) We have no choice but to feel we were unfairly targeted by unfriendly staff who just misunderstood completely, and there's no point in trying to explain anything when someone is determined to misunderstand. We just will never go back or take visitors there. The offerings beyond the beer are pedestrian anyway. And the Frose', while seemingly popular - is a sugary joke. We are certainly not the people they feared. So I suggest that if you go out to this place, also order food here or something - because otherwise there is a decent chance they will discuss you behind your back and be ready with a verdict about whether you get a second round or not, for whatever arbitrary reason they have - then they will tell you in no better way than the Seinfeld soup nazi.

Yelp
Watching Burial grow from a tiny space with a type writer poet in the corner and 4 beers on tap (most of which sold out instantly) to the massive operation they're running today has been so fun. They are always producing amazing product and their staff is top notch! I was thrilled to see a ton of NA options for folks who may not be drinking. We tried out an NA beer and a CBD seltzer and both were delicious. Thanks for the variety!
google avatar

Yelp
Cool atmosphere! They had a good selection of beer and food- I tried the Italian Pilsner, it was light and crisp. The fries were yummy, not the biggest fan of the grilled cheese. Plenty of indoor/outdoor seating- dog-friendly and family-friendly

Yelp
Hands down, my favorite brewery in Asheville (if not the entire Eastern side of the US). Their marketing team does a tremendous job at putting STUNNING visuals out on their social accounts. Their beer is top tier. This is a can't miss staple if you're doing South Slope. Their brewers are always pushing the boundaries when it comes to creating new products. I would also definitely pick up some of their merch if you're at any of their locations. I can't wait to go back!

Allison C.

Yelp
Came here expecting greatness, as per the reviews. However, experience was the opposite. This wanna-be Brooklyn brewery was WAY overpriced even with daily drink/ bar bite specials. The wings were SO SMALL! How can you charge $10 for that? Mind you, it isn't a dozen, it's 6 tiny wings. Peep the photo, it was smaller than my pinky. Bartender was friendly, but there are much better spots. He also didn't fill my wine glass up to the line, skimped me about 3 ounces... thanks

Yelp
This location of Burial Beer is in a super trendy area of Asheville. Loved the atmosphere - gorgeous outdoor setting! You can drink in a van - I mean how cool is that?!!! Beer and food stellar!

Yelp
During our recent visit to Asheville, my wife and I explored the brewery scene and stumbled upon this gem. The place had a great vibe, and the service was on point. Excited to return and sample more of their beers.

Yelp
As far as beer goes, Burial is king in my book. Easily my favorite brewery. I love this location and the gift shop with awesome beers to take home. I don't think you can get the stouts anywhere but on location. Definitely check Burial out when in Asheville!
google avatar

Yelp
We didn't eat here so I can't rate the food. They do have a small food menu, so they may have something you dig. The only service we encountered was a beer tender, and she did a fine job. She poured the beer quickly and was friendly. The ambiance is really the shining star for me. Lots of fun, multi-tiered seating. They even have some old vans that were converted to tables. Super cool atmosphere out back. The beer itself was good. I'm not an IPA guy, and that seemed to be the majority of the menu. We had a frozen drink and a mead and they were both good: The inside bar was closed when we stopped in, but it's a nice space and seems like it could be fun on a busy night.

Yelp
Visiting Ashville, NC for the first time and was recommended several breweries. I have to say this one was in the top 3 with our experience! With a wide range of options for lovers of IPAs, lagers, stouts, Pilsners and more, the beer scene is top notch. The patio has so much space and it's well kept and inventing. There is a water section for doggies as they are welcomed! This is a stop we will be adding every time we visit Ashville. It is very conveniently located and within walking distance to other breweries if you choose to beer hop and walk.

Yelp
This place did not disappoint. We only had beer, no food, but what a fun atmosphere indoors & our. Chill vibes, skull...buriel! I mean who doesn't want to sit in an old parked van outside and drink? Roof was great. Each level & room offers something new. I was only disappointed that their T-shirts have cool logos but do not say Asheville, North Carolina on them.

Yelp
This place is awesome !! We where recommended this place by a friend and made it our first stop of our road trip to AZ and it did not disappoint! If you like IPA we recommend hurricane or the diabolical elements of fundamental decency. We only ordered the winds here and they crunchy delicious ! They have lots of outdoor space. They have a deck, smoking areas and an indoor seating. Very dog friendly which we love because we travel with our Aussie.

Yelp
Very cool spot with very good beer. I visited over the holidays with some family friends--all of which are beer snobs in the best way--and a number of them have decided this is one of the very best breweries in Asheville. Let's start with the vibe. This place is clearly called Burial for a reason, but it doesn't take itself too seriously. It has an industrial feel (minus the modern, sleek side that many breweries have adopted these days) and tons of eclectic-verging-on-creepy decor. Think lots of skull imagery, funky murals and logos, and some very random items used as decor. It's all done with humor and has a certain hippie charm if you ask me. I have to give a shout out to the beer names, which played right into the theme: Too Old To Live, Too Young To Die; That Which Beckons Us Beyond the Mortal Realm; This Feasting Tempest of Death At the Temple of Dissatisfaction. I mean c'mon, you've got to give them some props. Go give the descriptions on their website a read, it'll make your day if you're into this sort of thing. There's lots of indoor and outdoor seating, and the patio is dog friendly with plenty of heaters. I will say that there are two bars inside, and only one was open during our visit, so the bar line was wrapped around the entire building. One of the bartenders told us that they were super understaffed that day, so I don't think this is the norm. Every beer we tried was great, and there was a lot of variety so everyone in our group found something they wanted to try. Enlightened Aren't We All (NE IPA) was my personal favorite--nice and hazy. Overall, this is a really fun spot located right in the heart of Asheville's beer scene. Definitely worth adding to your brewery crawl.

Yelp
One of my favorite places on the south slope . Great selection of beers and Meade/ciders. Lots of seating inside and outside. Parking on the street. Happy hunting for a spot but they are there. Well worth the visit here. This place has a growing following. Try them and see if you are worthy.

Yelp
A great stop on our Asheville trip! We stopped here after dinner for our last brew of the evening, and we're glad we did. The ambience of Burial is so fun - not surprising, lots of dark vibes and eclectic culture. Loved the various vehicles out on the lawn, and we're lucky that we snagged one to enjoy our beers in. They had a ton of outdoor seating, couldn't really appreciate much indoor seating, but I also wasn't paying too close attention. They had a lot of beers on tap, and almost all were IPAs with decently high percentages. I went more conservative and opted for the "Garden of Earthly Delights," a 6% sour that was barrel aged and featured fruit and vanilla tones. It was a great drink to end my day, and the amount of sour was appropriate but not as overwhelming as others I've had. I really enjoyed this beer! My husband opted for one of the IPAs (the specific one is escaping me), which he really enjoyed as well. The bartenders were helpful in guiding him on his selection, which he appreciated. It would have been fun to try a flight to experience more of their brews, so next time we'll have to stop at Burial earlier in our day to get the fullest experience and to try more beers. But I would definitely recommend Burial for anyone looking for a fun vibe with lots of unique IPAs!

Yelp
Easy five stars for a brewery that had delicious beers and a vibe that was right up my alley! While visiting Asheville over the holidays we made a point to try out as many breweries as we could during our time there and this one was definitely my favorite. It has a heavy metal ambience, from the decor, the shop, the beer names, and the music playing throughout the brewery. There was ample seating, both inside and out, and an indoor and outdoor bar. My boyfriend tried the Skillet Donut Stout (came with a donut hole which was awesome) and I tried the Keeper's Veil Honey Saison. Both beers were really good with strong flavor notes. Sometimes with beers I don't always taste the notes listed on the descriptions, but here I definitely did. I would have been content to just plant myself here and enjoy the music and beers, but with our limited time we wanted to continue to explore Asheville. I'd definitely make this my first stop on a future visit!
google avatar

Michael H.

Yelp
Their reputation is great and a visit does NOT disappoint. I'm a fan of the hoppy west coast IPA. They are increasingly difficult to find, especially in the southeast. Much to my surprise, I show up at Burial and the have not one but two really good west coast's on tap. "You had me at west". Whew!! This place has a cool, creepy, retro vibe. The music is great and the whole experience is something to seek and hold on to. When you're in Asheville you need to visit Burial!
google avatar

Chelsea R.

Yelp
I always love stopping by Burial Beer when I am in town. They have a nice beer selection, great nonalcoholic options, delicious food, and the vibes are a 10/10. We stopped in this time for some drinks and I grabbed a nonalcoholic option that was very tasty. The menu always has me wanting to order food but we skipped that this time around. Be sure to check them out next time you're in the area. They have lots of outdoor seating if it's a nice day too!
google avatar

Alicia H.

Yelp
I wish I lived nearby because I CANNOT stop thinking about Burial's Nitro Porter. Omg it was perfect. It was bold, it was crispy, it was decadent, and it was crushable. It was so well balanced and my new favorite Nitro Coffee Porter. My hubby absolutely loved his IPAs too. Burial's brewery is def unique- I'd describe it as a divey hipster eclectic brewery. Certainly a casual place where you & friends can enjoy many hours and many beers together. I also super appreciated the gigantic heaters above the outdoor tables & how dog friendly they are. Make sure you check this place out!
google avatar

Rachel C.

Yelp
All the kids running around really kills the mood. The food was fine. We got the veggie burger, the patty itself was delicious, but once again.. if you're gonna have a vegan burger why not at least have a vegan bun or have an option to just buy the vegan patty and not be charged for mayo, cheese, and a bun we didn't get. The beer was good as always. Beer would get 4 stars but 2 this trip due to everything else
google avatar

Yelp
Super fun brewery! I had the frozé. It was refreshing & just the right amount of tart. Fun environment!

Yelp
Stopped in Asheville on my way down to Hilton head South Carolina. Was told that per capita there are more breweries in Asheville than anywhere else in the country. I believe it. On the south slope there are 10 breweries currently. This was the first one that I tried. Huge venue. What caught my eye was they have old cars that are used for seating. Lots of paint and graffiti on them as Asheville is a very artsy community. They have two bars several beer gardens. The place was packed. One of the cooler venues that I've been to. The beer itself was Decent. Most of the styles that they carry. There are not the styles that I typically like. There were a lot of IPAs. I had their bock helles beer as well as a lager. Both were solid, but again most of the beers that they have on tap are not the styles that I typically enjoy. But I gave the rating due to the venue itself, which was pretty awesome. Definitely a stop if you are in the area.

Yelp
Such a fun place. Good beer with fab names. Great outdoor seating with large, multilevel patio.

Yelp
During my recent excursion to Asheville, Burial Brewery emerged as a standout gem tucked away in the industrial part of town. Here's a glimpse into the distinctive experience I had. Street parking, though necessary, proved hassle-free. The industrial surroundings only added to the brewery's allure, and finding a spot was a breeze. With both indoor and outdoor seating, the abundance of space ensured a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere. The brewery's dual bars, each offering different options, showcased a thoughtful curation. The cool layout, featuring an old school abandoned bus as a drinking spot, added a touch of eccentricity that elevated the overall ambiance. While flights weren't on the menu, the option to enjoy two 4oz drinks at a time allowed for a personalized tasting experience. The porter left a lasting impression with its delicious notes, and the IPAs proved to be among the best I've encountered during my Asheville journey. For those wanting to extend the experience, Burial Brewery has a separate area to purchase beer for later enjoyment. It's evident that the brewery not only values the in-house experience but also ensures patrons can take a piece of their exceptional brews with them. Burial Brewery is more than just a place for great beer; it's a unique haven with an industrial charm, diverse drink options, and a layout that makes each visit memorable. If you're in Asheville, it's a must-visit for any craft beer enthusiast.

Yelp
Beer gardens create this amazing sense of community. Burial has an amazing suite of tables and cars (yes, cars) to sit and enjoy friends and beer. And food. And beer. I enjoy the names they choose for the beers they brew. In point, characteristic, and fit the motif. My favorite place in Asheville.
google avatar

Steve C.

Yelp
Laid-back brewery on the southside of downtown. They have an open courtyard with some picnic tables and such. Lots of of interesting brew concoctions. Overall, though they have pretty solid beer.
google avatar

Sefali P.

Yelp
This was the last stop on our Ashville beer crawl for the day and unfortunately it didn't match the other breweries. None of the drinks were as memorable as the mural. The outdoor seating was nice, with plenty of covered areas and even a vintage van with limited seating inside.
google avatar

Suzanne V.

Yelp
Great beers, lots of fun little places to hang out, funky ambiance. Not excited about beer? The mead was refreshing and delish!
google avatar

Nick N.

Yelp
Asheville has more beer per capita than anyone, but this is an absolute must stop. For a brewery that knows it's good, and has all the press to back it up, they have wonderful service. Three different bartenders flew through my order, offered advice, and were kind and genuine people. I'm shocked a brewery this big and popular will offer 4 Oz pours on a Friday afternoon. Most places are "too busy" to offer that service. It let me sample 8 different things. Coming from San Diego, everyone has Burial earmarked on their must go list. Getting amazing service to appreciate this place added something extra. Thanks to Burial for doing it right
google avatar

Allison M.

Yelp
Probably one of my favorite breweries in this area. It has been a staple for years. I remember when it was lesser known- now it's in the south slope and way busier but the quality remains. The staff is kind and helpful but unassuming. They are there if you need them but leave you to your independent socialization. I appreciate this as some friends don't drink and they never feel weird here. They also have some non alcoholic options (hip water and lemonade). Their wine selection rotates and is surprisingly curated. They always have a rose and white and red. All delicious. Their wine spritzer is light and refreshing. Prepare to pay $12 a glass but enjoy it. Their beer is delicious. Had always been and stays true. They are unique in their punk-ish name and theme. From the wooden tables and carefully curated art and labels. The dark beer is particularly delish. They have a little bus to sit in, and plenty of tables inside outside and on the roof. I love when they do events like brunch. The food is new and looks veggie friendly. Can't wait to try that!
google avatar

Mark R.

Yelp
A bold statement, but I think the best micro brew in the USA. The flavors in their NE style IPAs are really refined. The stouts are super complex and delicious. We've been coming periodically for about 10 years now - I never miss when I am in town.
google avatar

Jessica F.

Yelp
We wish we came sooner! There are 2 bars- one at the front with a limited selection and one in the back with outdoor seating. Plenty of outdoor benches, cute van to sit in and live music. The beers were amazing.
google avatar

Danielle S.

Yelp
Quite possibly the best brewery in Asheville! Lots of beer on tap to try and they had some gluten free options including mead and an amazing dry cider. We also got wings and a salad which were surprisingly good. Service was quick and everyone was nice. Lots of seating outside, not too much inside. They also have a cool merch shop which is worth checking out. They had a very limited release sour only being sold in there and it is super good. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
Asheville beercation 2023. Burial was the top of our list and it did not disappoint. Best beer was Compilation of Sporadic Contemplations from Minds Unraveled. Dinner was a shrimp Poboy. Great!
google avatar

Yelp
Stellar beer. Excellent shop, stocked with plenty of to go beers. Busy on Sunday, but slow on a rainy Monday. A must stop for any craft beer lovers visiting Asheville.
google avatar

Kathleen K.

Yelp
The vibes were on at this brewery. Lots of art, lots of food options, TONS OF OUTDOOR SEATING. Pets and babies galore, but they were all very well behaved. Sparkling lemonade and NA beer options for the sober gurlies. Efficient staff.
google avatar

George H.

Yelp
Best brewery in Asheville. They have a good variety of ipa's and sours. The place is a vibe super cool dark yet hip place to have a great craft beer. Highly recommended

Yelp
My favorite beer and brewery. Burial never disappoints! Solid beers, great taste! I love their IPA's!

Yelp
My husband and dad are obsessed with Burial's beer. We went here 3 days in a row (IN A ROW!) while we were in Ashville for 5 days. If we lived closer, we'd be broke. I absolutely loved their 'Pardoned of Our Demons' sour and I pretty much just stuck to that as I'm not as big of a beer drinker (you're likely to find me parked around the corner sipping ciders at Urban Orchard or sours at Funkatorium.) The 'A Moderation that was Within Reach' sour was also pretty good. Burial has a cool atmosphere and a large outdoor seating area with plenty of room to spread out. Even a little rooftop patio area, too. Patio is dog friendly. If I recall from last time, the inside is relatively small and it was closed this trip because of covid. This is a must stop any time we are in town so we will definitely be back!

Yelp
I love coming to this brewery when we visit Asheville. The music is mostly punk/emo and definitely my style as well as the names and the sweet artwork with skulls, etc. Last year I was way more impressed with their beer options. I remember one of the beers I got was a kettle sour and tasted like candy and couldn't find anything similar this year. I do enjoy trying all their flavors though, as they seem to switch it up.
