Smokin’ Woods Barbecue Expands Hours in Oakland - Eater SF

"Burlap Coffee is now open just steps away from the MacArthur BART station in Oakland. The spacious cafe, formerly Cafe Maricela, serves basic espresso drinks in a bright yellow space with grab-your-own pastries from a cabinet, panaderia style." - Janelle Bitker

Google
Looks like a place artists would meet. Cozy and a lot of space. Loved my banana mocha with oats milk in a mag. Didn’t even need sugar. Different art on the wall, too. Unfortunately, their Mighty Leaf teas were all in plastic mesh, and it is known plastics and hot water is not a healthy combo…

Google
it’s a nice place to do work! beautiful artwork and seats. not much parking, so walk or take the bus. coffee and teas are delicious, food is great too. the owner and workers are super friendly ^_^ feel very at home here.

Google
the barista guy and owner is so nice. hot caramel lattes were amazing. very close to the bart and also a great little coworking space. they leave you alone and you can work for hours should you wish to. all in all, a neighborhood gem

Rebecca L

Google
came here to get a oat milk latte, and it was more open and spacious than I expected very nice even though I was only there for less than 20 minutes. The atmosphere was amazing and plenty of places to plug-in if that’s your type of thing.

Google
I recall the bathroom being very clean. Which is always a relief anywhere you go. I ordered a breakfast sandwich made with egg and Spinach they did have a vegetarian option which was nice. They had box water which was cute and Some other options as well. They have a lot of seating which was nice and the grand piano was a great addition to the extra seating area they had. Looked like a very clean environment.

Google
Randomly tried this when we were in Oakland and it is so nice! Staff super attentive and helpful and the place is much bigger than it seems from the outside. Big back section with couches and communal tables. Breakfast sandwiches are really good too!

Google
Espresso was nasty. Egg sandwich was just okay. Shop seems cute, just don't go for the espresso

Google
Affordable prices on food and drink, great space for working. Love that there is no charge for plant-based milk and discounted pastries after $2. Grateful to find a chill and affordable coffee shop!

Yelp
A very laid back coffee shop where you can read a book or work for hours. They sell food, coffee, and tea. The back of the coffee shop is very spacious and it has a piano and couch.

Yelp
What a nice place to work, to have a matcha latte, to just enjoy a lil bit outside and change the routine. What most important thing for me, it is pet friendly. You will have a great time here, with a good service.

Yelp
Coffee isn't good at all, bitter not pulled properly tasted awful. The service was unreal too, the iced latte cost $6.40, every coffee shop l've been to the price posted is the price you pay,the menu says $5.90 but you'll pay $6.40, very misleading, if it was good I wouldn't have minded as much. I pay $7 at Urth Cafe for an iced mocha that is amazing. Anyway, I said wow thats expensive, the lady making the coffee says " I just follow orders the owner sets the prices ", sorry you see yourself as just there to follow orders, how sad for you. I've never heard such a disturbing comment, clearly this woman and business has issues. I wouldn't return to this place even if the coffee was free.

Yelp
Great local coffee shop with very cool vibe. Friendly and helpful staff who know how to make outstanding cappuccino.

Yelp
Only been here twice, but you can be damn sure the third and future visits will be stellar. I am greeted by the same lady who always asks more than any just the standard greeting, which I love. She is an efficient multi-tasker, making sure that her (likely) quickly-passing-through customers can rush off to their next destination after ordering. As for the actual food & drink - I've only had the Banana Mocha, but it was lovely both times. I'd say it's closer to a lightly sweetened chocolate latte - not overpoweringly sweet as one might first imagine. They sell Pebbles (berries / red velvet) vegan donuts, (plain, chocolate, almond) croissants, and baked bars, along with some more shelf-stable baked goods and instant oatmeal. I had the blueberry donut & a plain croissant my first two times - cause believe it or not the actual donut shops within a block of there always seem to have a line (good for them though!).

Yelp
I live around the corner from this coffee shop and so glad that it's here. It's such a cute little shop and very homey. I've only tried their Vanilla Iced Latte and it's such high quality and delicious. The barista is so friendly and sweet too. This is definitely going to be my staple coffee shop.

Yelp
I got a coffee to go today and it was solid, but I had such a strange, rude experience! I ordered a decaf latte because I enjoy the taste but didn't want any more caffeine for the day. The woman taking my order gave me a weird face and repeated "decaf?" A few minutes later she gave the barista my order and said in a tone "decaf." He looked at her and said "are you serious?" in an almost whisper but still loud enough I could hear. He then took a bit talking about bagels and things with her before looking at me and again saying "decaf," then walking over to pour a decaf black coffee. I clarified I had ordered a latte and he then re-made it, but ordering a decaf latte at a coffee shop should not have been such an ordeal! Particularly when they do indeed have it. And they certainly shouldn't have been so rude about it right in front of me. No thanks!

Yelp
Cute coffee shop with lots of outlets available, vintage appliances available and a wide variety of seats and furniture to relax at.

Yelp
Coffee, food, studying!!!! This place has been everything to me while preparing for my exit exam! Service is great. Atmosphere is great. This place is super warm and inviting! I definitely recommend them for coffee with friends, solo, or for a date!

Yelp
Due to the pandemic, I will be removing criteria that I had added to my reviews, such as restaurant ambience, mood, and wait time. This review will only focus on the dish. Quick Summary: - Coffee is not sour, deep and nutty - Pastries pair well with the coffee - A short walking distance from the Macarthur BART station - Music is trendy pop My family and I were planning to walk around the Macarthur area, but first we decided to find a place to have our first cup of coffee. After some searching, we found a coffee place just within walking distance from the Macarthur BART station. I ordered the caffe latte, and the banana mocha for my relative who prefers sweet coffee drinks. We were able to have our coffee inside, so we sat in the available tables and chairs that were close to the entrance and the counter. When I look behind me, there is another room - closed off for now - that is filled with empty chairs and tables. On a normal day, I could see there would usually be more guests sitting in the back room. Since we decided to drink inside, the coffee arrived in the most adorable cups I have ever seen in a coffee shop. As well as the cup designs, I also adore the interior design of the cafe. That was, in fact, one of the reasons why I decided to stop by this cafe. I love furniture with a classic and cottage like look. I mostly drank the caffe latte, but I did try the banana mocha too. The coffee flavor is deep and rich, a good energy for the morning and afternoon walk. It was a good balance of coffee and milk, and no change in acidity or bitterness to the last sip. The banana mocha was delicious too; not too sweet so it also paired well with the pastry we ordered along with our coffee. Speaking of pastry, I ordered the raspberry lemon bar. The sour, tartness is mild in this dessert, and I got a burst of raspberry in each bite. It was a very satisfying taste. I'm usually for sour lemon bars, but this one was so good I might change my preference. I loved the cafe here, so I would like to visit here again.

Yelp
The Cafe is quaint with all the right feel in the neighborhood. They do close at 2pm on a Saturday. Love to see the Furbabies that come through in the Cafe. They have a little treat for them too.
google avatar

Yelp
It is a sweet little place, and I love the homey decor. We were looking for a little spot to have a good coffee and conversation and it was perfect for us. Coffee was really good and service was good. Would definitely go back

Yelp
After passing by this place many times while catching the bus, I finally decided to to treat myself today. From the outside, this coffee shop looks rly small but there is a large seating area in the back with unique art. The cashier greeted me as I walked in and was super kind. I ordered the egg and cheese sandwich and an iced latte. Both were reasonably priced for a cafe! I love the cups they use for the coffee, and it had a solid well balanced taste. The egg and cheese sandwich was great too! I appreciate the freshness and quality of the ingredients, as the sandwich was steaming when I got it. The english muffin was perfectly crisp on the outside and soft in the inside, which paired well with the melted cheese and fluffy egg. I think they cooked the egg perfectly (it was not dry at all). This cafe is super chill and relaxing and I love the back seating area which is great for studying. The music is not TOO loud either. I will definitely try the banana mocha next time! *I also appreciate that they make an effort to check vaccination cards and ID if you are dining in, which most cafes don't seem to do!

Yelp
Ordered a cold brew because they were out of nitro...and because I wanted a cold drink. Got oat milk (they didn't have dairy) and was t terribly impressed. I suddenly remembered I prefer a milkier texture or at least...sweetener. Might be back to try their other items (or hot coffee) since the location is rather convenient.
google avatar

Dia G.

Yelp
Great place but I don't understand why they close so early (at 1pm on Sunday!), would love to come here with friends and catch up on a late Sunday afternoon. They should consider opening longer
google avatar

Selena L.

Yelp
Solid place to study, it's not a super large place but the vibes are nice. I ordered the honey oat smoothie (which sounds like a strange thing to get at a coffee shop, but it was honestly so good). My boyfriend got the banana mocha. You couldn't really taste the banana that much, but I thought it was the perfect level of sweetness. I wish the menu had more options but overall a good place to get some work done!
google avatar

Michael L.

Yelp
Went here for breakfast to start my day off and it was a great decision! I got an iced banana mocha with oat milk and I was curious at how it would actually turn out since I've never had a banana mocha and honestly it was so delicious! The banana flavor is very subtle and compliments the mocha well. The egg sausage and cheese sandwich was delicious too! The egg was like homemade (if that makes sense, as opposed to the McDonald pre made esque), the sausage was nice and thicc, and the biscuit it was in was crispy. I put some hot sauce on it and it was perfect :) I wanted to try the sweet potato donut but I forgot to order it so I'll definitely be back

Yelp
I just moved to a different part of Oakland and was hoping to explore cafes with vegan options. I saw in photos and reviews that this place carried one or two vegan pastries. Upon arrival they told me they no longer carry any vegan options so that was a bummer (docked a star). With plant based diets being so prominent nowadays I feel it's important to offer at least one option but this place is cute and I still enjoyed my oat milk latte! Thanks for having plant milk :). The inside is colorful and comfortable, definitely a place I could see myself hanging out and working if I had more time today! I would recommend this cute coffee shop.

Yelp
Friendly and gourmet and 2 blocks from BART. My friend Mike and I hadn't seen each other for a few years and he stopped off at the BART train we walked up to burlap and I ordered a latte which was very well-made and he ordered a fruit-based smoothie type drink which was delicious.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, kind staff, wonderful service, and community friendly. Good beverages hot and cold.

Yelp
I used to pass this café everyday on my way to Bart, and finally stopped in. I'm grateful that I did! This one of Oakland's hidden gems. I asked the barista to recommend a drink for me. I was very skeptical when he told me to try the "banana mocha", but it was surprisingly delicious! I also love the decor and the spacious lounge area. It is the perfect place to take your laptop or tablet if you need to get some work done or watch a video. I will definitely be returning!
google avatar

Ted R.

Yelp
Burlap is a new coffee option virtually next door to MacArthur BART. The pastry rack is just inside the door on the left and I found it quite inviting. The raspberry pastry I had was very good. Cesar is the lone barista and a really friendly guy. Good to know you'll have coffee consistency. He did a great job with my latte complete with a pretty heart. Plenty of space here if you want to get your work on or just chill.
google avatar

Miriam S.

Yelp
I asked for a "Berry Buzz Smoothie" and everything was going fine until I asked for an "Egg, Sausage & Cheese" breakfast sandwich. I was told the options they had were "Egg & Cheese", "Egg, Bacon & Cheese", and "Sausage". Since I did not see "Sausage" by itself on the menu, I asked if it was the "Egg, Sausage & Cheese" option. Then, the person proceeded to repeat all the options very slowly and in a rude tone without addressing my question. I did not ask to be belittled. A simple no would have sufficed. I expressed my discomfort, told them they were being rude, and left. May come back another time, but today is not the day.
google avatar

Karen A.

Yelp
I love this place. Coffee is great, service is good and atmosphere is quiet but you can still have a conversation and or study. I usually come in the mornings before work and they are fast. Half a block from bart and parking right in front for a quick stop.
google avatar

Donny P.

Yelp
Very friendly place for cup of coffee and a donut. Good cup of coffee. The bqriata was very nice had a mask on and there was a bottle of hand sanitizer on the counter. Was not hungry but want to come back to try their breakfast sandwich items and also their shakes. Very reasonable price. Quick and friendly service. Parking a little difficult.
google avatar

Yelp
Hidden gem in Temescal serving up Rainboe donuts and a solid mocha. I chose the sweet potato donut and took the barista up on her recommendation to have it heated. Hit the spot perfect in combination on a cold morning after my run. Support this local spot if you're ever in the neighborhood.

Yelp
Would I return - yes (if I were I the area/ taking BART) Totally missed this 2-month old old store. Slightly hidden behind massive buildings and scaffolding- but super excited for this part of oakland which is slowly taking shape and adding more unique, kitschy businesses Store breakdown: 1. Clean with wide open spaces 2. Features a baked goods section with donuts and croissants 3. Coffee is affordable at $2.50 and extra smooth .. a little too smooth/ lacked depth and strong finish but still cheap and satisfying 4. Offers a small selection of sandwiches 5. Small backroom offers the most seating- wish they'd do something with the dead space in the front/lobby 6. Random baby grand piano I wish them success :/)

Tam N.

Yelp
$7 + tip for 12Oz ice latte, and it tastes like low average coffee bean. Not worth it. Maybe the cost was factor in the space for people who want to hang out there. I got mine to go and overall experience is just meh!
google avatar

Tristan W.

Yelp
Burlap is one of the best cafes I've ever been to. The baristas are awesome and the coffee is good. My favorite part of Burlap is the vibe of the place. If you are in Oakland you must go check out Burlap!
google avatar

Sierra S.

Yelp
Burlap Coffee is my new favorite spot! Burlap Coffee sells tasty Ethiopian coffee, sandwiches, bagels, and pastries. I ordered an iced chai latte which was delicious. The space is surprisingly very big, which you wouldn't assume when walking by! The back area has tons of seating and large tables with lots of outlets and fast free WiFi. It was easy to stay here a while to get work done and keep ordering! The barista was SO nice and friendly. I found my new study coffee spot.
google avatar

Kate M.

Yelp
My favorite breakfast sandwich in the Temescal, and I'm addicted to the banana mochas. Counter service is always friendly and they have plenty of seating with outlets if you want to hang out and work for a while.
google avatar

Luis P.

Yelp
Really appreciate the woman working the counter. She is super nice and friendly. Always makes my morning coffee run pleasant. I don't really have much to say about Burlap except it's local, which you should support. And I believe it's black owned. I've tried the 2 smoothies they sell here. They're pretty decent, i haven't had a chance to try anything else yet. I do miss being able to sit down and work on my computer inside the cafe. It was cute and decorated with some vintage appliances. I usually get a dirty chai, it's pretty good hot or cold. I suggest you give this local business a try during these hard times!
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
My fiancé and I try and experience a new coffee shop every weekend as Oakland has so many wonderful places to try. I felt very safe with all the COVID precautions. There are two tables out front you can enjoy your coffee. The staff was nice and the coffee was good. Worth checking out for sure!
google avatar

André C.

Yelp
They make one of the meanest cortados in Oakland. A must-have. Nice staff. They should have live music in there. The piano is lonely.

Davlyn M.

Yelp
The service was very easygoing polite. The ambience is very warm and cozy. Very inviting, a place where you can sit with no noise little bit of background noise, which is soothing somewhere where you can conduct business do some schoolwork or just relax and enjoy a cuppa coffee, I will be returning back to burlap coffee. It was very wonderful there. They also have freshly made croissants and oatmeal. The food is very inviting and smells good.
google avatar

Yelp
Reminds me of some of the cafes in the U.K. The coffee is not bad but it's definitely not your 3rd wave style. Inside the cafe is a mismatch of objects that creates the eclectic style. Good place to actually sit with a friend and chit chat, tall ceilings and books at the corner. It just feels like it's a bit of an abandoned place but then it's the style. The statement pieces gives the vintage vibe and jazzes up the place. There's so much potential though.
google avatar

Jennifer H.

Yelp
Delicious coffee! I ordered soy vanilla latte and it was amazing! Not overly sweet & nor overly hot. The temperature was right to sip & go. I've also ordered some muffins with bacon, egg, and cheese. Very generous amount of bacons on the muffin. Beautiful decor & decoration inside the cafe. Looks like a good spot to read a book or just hang out. Streets parking are available. Friendly service.

Lionel H.

Yelp
Good is really bad. $10 breakfast sandwich that was served cold on the inside. Pre made sandwiches that they can't even dial in temperatures for at this price point is unjustifiable. Also coffee is super bad. Really over extracted.
google avatar

Merisa R.

Yelp
Really cute café and excellent location. I found this when I was looking for a cafe near Bart and they're right outside Bart. Iasked for a Vanilla latte with almond milk. Made perfectly and absolutely delicious. Also love the set up. A mix up f independent art with some antique furniture. Felt really comfortable and really wished I had more time to hang out and chill before work. Definetly will come back.

Yelp
I just tried this place this morning while at the Bart station waiting for my shuttle to get to work. It was so windy this morning and I remembered this cafe being next to Bart so I walked a couple minutes away to get there. It's located in a very convenient location with street parking near the front of the building. I ordered a vanilla latte with almond milk and a spinach, egg & cheese sandwich. The latte was delicious, the espresso they use was very good and had good flavor. It was not bitter or burnt tasting at all. The sandwich was okay. It was a little too salty for my taste. The woman made it very quick too in their tiny oven. So I'm thinking the sandwich was probably a frozen one kind of how they do it at Starbucks. Products I seen other than those were: pastries, bananas, other sandwiches including the ones with meat, other coffee drinks and matcha. My total for my latte and sandwich was $13.56. They have a lot of nice seating area, good music playing and people on their devices. They also offer free Wi-Fi for paying customers. They had a fun yet calm ambiance, not too many people talking but more upbeat music than other cafes I've been too. Because it's in route of my daily commute, I will definitely return to this cafe and try other items.
google avatar

Sarah M.

Yelp
This is such a quality coffee shop. The staff were incredibly friendly, the coffee was delicious. They had a simple but delicious breakfast menu. They also sell smoothies, pastries, and oatmeal that is packaged in a way that would be easy to take home if you're in a rush but want food with your coffee. But, my favorite part of this coffee shop is the atmosphere. It's got so much space to relax and work. The vibes were immaculate.
google avatar

Kevin K.

Yelp
Snagged a quick coffee and an egg/ham/cheese muffin. Coffee was smooth and tasty, no bitterness. The muffin sandwich was superb, nice amount of ham and a gooey cheese. A great little find!
google avatar

Cameron V.

Yelp
Coffee and space may be fine, but I would not recommend the food. I ordered a breakfast sandwich, which was a hot glump of sausage, egg, and cheese with a cold center, piled onto a sad english muffin. Definitely one of those defrost-and-serve type foods. Will not be going back.
google avatar

Victor G.

Yelp
Burlap Coffee drips upon Ruthie's Cafe long vacated space. space totally refurnished. laid back opulent ambience. some seating in back offerings: vegan donuts, hot/cold drinks, hot tea. sammies soon brew: ethiopian yirgacheffee coffee, 12 oz (2.75) -smooth, strong brew. -quick, friendly service drips: -near MacArthur Bart station -little street parking nearby. ongoing construction takes up space.
google avatar

Yanela A.

Yelp
I love Burlap Coffee! They have the tastiest breakfast sandwiches & the coffee is always right. Also, Isabel is the ultimate best! I love coming here every morning before work.
google avatar

Yoli C.

Yelp
This place is DOPEEE. Came in this afternoon with a friend and was kindly greeted by Caesar. He was friendly and quick! Ordered an iced mocha, half-caf cappuccino and a banana mocha (weird, right?) The banana mocha was surprisingly good! I will be back here for sure! Not to mention the LOVELY latte art
google avatar

Thomas K.

Yelp
Cute mom-and-pop with ample seating and fast wifi to work from. Hard to find these days post-pandemic. Definitely recommend any of the rotating coffees and smoothies. Breakfast sandwiches are flavorful, but can lean a little too toasted at times.

Marc C.

Yelp
Beautiful colors, clean space, very friendly service and delicious food and beverages make this place a delight on my morning commute! Thank you Burlap Coffee for all the joy that you provide!!!

Frankie R.

Yelp
I walked in to pick up my order (which I placed online 20 mins prior to showing up so I wouldn't have to wait for my order in the cafe) to see the person making drinks behind the bar not wearing a mask & talking up a storm. I asked if he could please remake my drink after putting on a mask, to which he apologized & said his friend was getting one for him (since he'd forgotten his in his car). He was nice about it, but that's not something anyone should have to request given the pandemic. It's not over. I get & appreciate that masks are forgotten all the time, but as a place that prepares food & beverages it's bad practice to not have back up masks for staff, especially the person preparing the beverages. Kinda funny that the woman behind the counter had the nerve to act a bit stunned that I wanted my drink prepared again while a mask was worn. You can think all the happy thoughts but even if you're vaccinated, talking into someone's drink & onto the cup they'll be drinking from puts them at risk if you're carrying the active virus, which is fully possible for vaccinated people. Super unfortunate because the place is really close and has good coffee. Hopefully the staff will do better to wear masks all the time.
